“I SHOULD HAVE KISSED HIM...”

After their agency green-lights a brilliantly flirty fanservice idea to promote their drama, Waves of Parting, Gu Yiliang and Wei Yanzi host a chaotic live stream that results in an explosion of NSFW fanfics. Now it’s game on.

Wei Yanzi is determined to find out if Gu Yiliang is actually gay, or if he’s just doling out the sugar for show. Meanwhile, Gu Yiliang is still under the impression that Wei Yanzi has a sugar daddy sponsoring him behind the scenes, and the jealousy becomes crippling. He proposes a new idea to Wei Yanzi: Why doesn’t he become Wei Yanzi’s sugar daddy instead?

Wei Yanzi, master of missing the point, doesn’t understand Gu Yiliang’s proposition. Is Gu Yiliang saying he wants to treat him like a boyfriend? That’s what he’s been doing this whole time, isn’t it? But to Wei Yanzi’s bewilderment, Gu Yiliang dials up the flirtation to max levels! By the time the two are headed back to Gu Yiliang’s place to “play games,” Wei Yanzi is left wondering—is this man trying to kiss me or kill me?!

“He's off key… and his breathing's erratic. Yet it's unimaginably moving… it's like I've been put under a soul-stirring spell... And I'm utterly helpless against its charms... disarming me until I have no armor left.”

description

Volume 3 brings the laughs, the chaos, and a surprising amount of heart. The sponsorship misunderstanding is a total highlight—genuinely funny and way better executed than I expected. What sets this apart from your typical BL is how the misunderstandings actually move things forward instead of dragging them out. The emotional growth feels real, not forced, and it’s refreshing to see the characters slowly open up instead of jumping into anything too fast.

Yanzi’s imagination? Completely unhinged—in the best way. His daydreams are hilarious, awkward, and somehow still kind of cute. It’s ridiculous and cringe-y but never overdone. I usually don’t vibe with manhua art styles, and I’ve said this in plenty of reviews, but the look of this series really works. It’s clean, expressive, and supports the story well without distracting from it.

I’ll admit, I thought this series wrapped up at Volume 3 when I first checked on the 7S website. Turns out, we’re just getting started—and I’m here for it. The slow burn is real, the comedy hits, and the pacing finally finds its groove. Definitely worth sticking with if you like a mix of humor and heartfelt moments with your BL.

Still a little on the silly side, and some of the pacing isn't great - I was expecting more substance from that photoshoot? - but this was a lot cuter and funnier than the second volume.

I like the deeper dives into Gu Yiliang's point of view. It's still hard to tell if he's actually aware of his own feelings for Wei Yanzi, so it's not surprising that Wei Yanzi is extremely confused by his massively mixed signals. What is clear is that Gu Yiliang really enjoys being around Wei Yanzi and is increasingly developing a protective/possessive instinct he doesn't really know how to handle.

His attitude changes a ton in this volume...he softens into a seriously puppylike need for attention, showering Wei Yanzi with gifts and getting anxious about things like how to say goodbye properly and what to do when Wei Yanzi invites himself over to his apartment.

The scene with the cat was really cute, and Gu Yiliang's Instagram post was adorable. I liked that there was less of the shippy fandom side of things in this volume, with more of the attention actually on the two of them spending time together and deepening their friendship. Not a ton of substance, honestly, but the gaming incident was funny and showed a whole different side to Wei Yanzi. The photoshoot, too - it was nice to briefly see him shining as a model. Still expected more to come from him literally wearing Gu Yiliang's clothing and his ring, but maybe that'll be later, once the photos are published.

For now, they just have a fangirl seeing them in the hospital - where Wei Yanzi pulled something trying too hard to be seductive in Gu Yiliang's bed - and Wei Yanzi getting kicked out of a shipper chat because he was trying to dispel some of the rumors about their relationship.

This isn't a particularly deep story, but I did find it interesting that when Wei Yanzi tried to sprinkle in some actual tidbits about what their dynamic is like - as one of the guys actually involved in it! - the shippers booed and booted him. There are a lot of things I love and appreciate about fandom spaces, but the RPF side can get pretty ugly, invasive, and aggressively delusional, so Wei Yanzi experiencing just a little bit of that gave the social media aspect of the storyline a little more substance.

The first volume was still by far the best, but I liked a good amount in this one and hope to see more of them actually talking to each other and becoming better friends.

I still like the characters, and the art style is really cute. It's just kind of moving at a glacial pace. Some of the structure is confusing when it's jumping between their inner monologues/flashback side conversations and the main story.

I was just going to make my review "this series is like watching the two dumbest people you know flirt with each other" and then I got to the W-sitting part, remembered what happens from the book version, and laughed so hard I cried. This truly is watching the two dumbest people you know flirt with each other... 😭😭😭 But I love it so much, it's soooo funny and congrats to Wei Yanzi for realizing he might not be as straight as he assumed, given how much he's into his own ship and his costar flirting with him... baby steps...

I thought this was going to be the final volume. How much are they going to drag this, there's no plot here?

O terceiro volume de I ship my rivalx me traz muita confusão e um desenvolvimento inesperado!

This is such a silly, lighthearted romance. The confusion about what's going on continues. Are they doing this for the sake of the fans, or is there genuine interest? Gu Yiliang's diary entries show mixed feelings and confusion, but also that his actions are deliberate, if based on a lot of misunderstandings. Wei Yanzi doesn't seem to know if he's into the fanfiction or the real romance.

Each chapter is filled with cute and silly moments that seem to only deepen the confusion--and the feelings. It's a hefty volume with 20 chapters, but the romance isn't even near to becoming real yet. I love the art, but like with earlier volumes, the layout that is optimised for the web doesn't entirely work in print form.

Wei's imagination runs wild while Gu is determined to be a good partner and they both are hit and miss flirting up a storm while still completely oblivious to how close they are and what they're relationship looks like to others outside of the company fanservice requests. Gu is determined to protect Wei and do right by him while Wei analyzes his own feelings and realizes just how close he is to crossing a line he may have already crossed when he wasn't aware. The ship meter from volume one is back again as well, and is as hilarious as ever. Wishing the next volume was already available, but looking forward to the next 2 releases already scheduled as this has been a very enjoyable and fun series with beautiful colored artwork.

Secondhand embarrassment but in a wholesome way. They are so funny when it comes to flirting, I definitely laughed out loud because it's so over the top. Cute, silly romance so far! The pace and plot need to get to a point too.

If you like the most dense and silliest inner monologue type of comedic protagonists, this is for you. Wei Yanzi trips into misunderstandings so easily it is a skill in itself.
