A solid team built up to be smart. Smaller strike teams to take on smaller issues while the main team of Avengers can focus on the big threats to Earth. This story brings in a lot of references to a lot of solo stories from these characters and I really appreciate that. Some good interactions between some people I didn’t expect to see on a panel together. I like when joke villains become a problem and we have to take them serious for a second. I hope we see this team expand and return in the future. 11 members is already a lot but their whole vibe is the more the better it seems.

Since the main Avengers crew is on a space station, I guess we need a back-up Avengers team for Earth-based missions. Cue: the Avengers Emergency Response Squad or the AvengE.R.S. Ugh

Once you get over that hurdle, though, The Serpent Scenario is a fun, perfectly adequate ride. The team is super varied, and most of the heroes get at least one moment to shine over the course of the book. The first few missions are silly, but also unique, like tackling ghost apes.

In the background, the Serpent Society (a bunch of silly, snake-themed villains) have been using AvengE.R.S. battles as a smokescreen for thievery, all in an attempt to curry favor with Mephisto. Ultimately, their goals don't really matter because the conclusion is a big, boring punchfest. A downer ending to a mostly satisfying volume. I'd check in on this squad again.

Four individual stories featuring a different handful of Avengers, all culminating in a fifth issue that pulls on the subplot from the previous four involving the Serpent Society (hence the title).

These are all decent stories. Orlando has some fun with a very varied cast with some unexpected additions like Lightning and Julie Power, and his Hercules is great fun. We get some bizarre set-ups involving radioactive ghost apes, vampires, and Victorious from Fantastic Four, but I think the tying thread being the Serpent Society doesn't really hold together as much as it should. There are hints at Mephisto, but he never actually appears, which really hurts the overall conclusion.

Each issue has a different artist, to various levels of effect. Cory Smith opens things up, and new face José Luis Soares closes things down, both in style, while Marcelo Ferreira, Valentina Pinti, and Scot Eaton take an issue each in the middle, but none of these three seem at their best. Pinti's issue especially feels inconsistent, and I've seen better from both Ferreira and Eaton elsewhere.

Fun, but I think literally anything other than the Serpent Society would have held this together a bit better.

First off, this should have a title that matches the team...

This is Aveng.E.R.S (Avengers Emergency Response Squad). Calling it anything else just confuses Avengers readers. How many renames does the Steve Rogers led, Unity Squad have to have? This isn't even final name. We've got this group reappearing in the upcoming 'Astonishing Avengers' series.

As a concept, it works. Smaller Avengers teams for smaller problems (can't have every group of Avengers in outer space...or the whole planet. They picked a solid group of mid-tier superheroes that haven't done much in recent Marvel history. Only thing I can think to REALLY knock this team is the fact that Night Thrasher (created in the 90s) subconsciously called back to that era with the flipping ugly Aveng.E.R.S. jackets.

Ugly A.F.
(and they're keeping them for the Astonishing Avengers series?)

Bonus: ANY member of Power Pack is one teammate too many. Hard pass.
Bonus Bonus: Move over Cap-Wolf, here comes Cap-Snake!

The draw for me is the characters. Hawkeye, my all time fave, and 10 other largely under utilised heroes, none of whom, amazingly, are characters I dislike. If you have to have a 'young' character Lightspeed is as good as any. No mutants! Yay!

The story isn't anything special, I guess it covers basic super heroics.

The artist is different for each part. Soares (the last artist) is the pick of them.

Very uneven across its five issues/chapters but a solid ending with better characterization than some moments earlier in the arc.

I like some of the newer adds to the team but the veterans seemed a tad off like they were pawns of the plot more than drivers of the same

There are things which grace these pages which some might claim to recognize - Cap, Wasp etc. But do not be fooled this are evil simulacrums worthy only of scorn and abuse, and rejection of art (inconsistent at best) and story (careless of character and scenario).
