Adair Finch, the most powerful warlock in the world, is back in business!
But first he must complete his pact with a mischief spirit by finding her a human body. Seemingly no easy task, as the mischief spirit is beyond picky about her future body. But on his way to Oakland, Finch stumbles upon the dead body of a social media star—both a solution and a major problem.
Oakland is teeming with werewolves, full moon witches, vampires, and redwood elves, most of whom aren’t on good terms with Finch. Navigating the supernatural world to gather clues about the murder is hard enough, but now Finch must also dodge old enemies and rivals. And to make matters worse, the murderer just might be trailing Finch, now that he’s found the body.
Good thing Finch has a pact with Chronos. With time on his side, perhaps he can do the impossible…
Continue this urban fantasy series in the second book of the Chronos Chronicles!

The first book in this series is still my favourite book of the year, but this one is not far behind.
The author took the time (yes, a pun, sorry...I had to do it), to exploit the ability to exert Adair Finch's ability to roll back time. She is able to do this in such a way, that you understand the minute details of the "Groundhog Day effect", but also how adept he is...for it takes a VERY smart person to remember all different permutations that need to coincide to get the desired outcome. The paitience of this main, is his real super power IMO.
In this story, he meets a YouTube influencer...and from that point on, he works his magic...and doing so, effects (in a positive way) on different characters (that I hope to see in future books), that almost become his family.
The character, Fox-Pistol is so unique. Combine that with Kull, and you have a dynamic situation.
Add Enzo, the wolf man, you have this team-up of the century.
The banter between the characters is so tight. The pop-culture references are fun to interact with, too.
I am older (late fifties), so I am leaning...like Finch was (a lot of the time) about the things she was talking about that was her life. So interesting the idea of "influencers" and the reality of who and what they actually do. Yikes.
Overall, this book was a blast, from start to finish. Now I'm hankering for another story, and another story.
Thank you. You (Shami Stovall) have fulfilled the need for a Harry Dresden-esque character in my life. Adair Finch is proficient in his craft, while not always do everthing correctly, but because of his magic...he has the time (literally) to figure out a way out of most every situation. Thank you.
This was a great way to end my 2024 adventure in reading! Book two in Shami Stovall's urban fantasy series: The Chronos Chronicles. Adair Finch, the world's strongest Warlock continues his adventures as a private investigator utilizing his special skills, especially the ability to rewind time, but only up to 24 hours. Stovall does an engaging job in demonstrating how difficult the "Groundhog Day" effect can be to manage. There is a lot happening in the book, even though it all takes place within 24-48 hours. The Chronos Warlock brings back Kull, the mischief spirit from book one, and fulfills Adair's promise to find her a body to inhabit. Most of the book details Kull's search to "level up" as a human. Making things more interesting, Adair, unknowingly, finds her the body of a recently deceased social media star, Fox Pistol. Also, the addition of Enzo, a werewolf, former police officer and friend of Adair's provides another element.
Characters are all interesting, and I want to know more about them. Theme throughout book of love/friendship and what it is. The emotional development of Kull, Adair and Enzo is handled well throughout the story without being too sappy, and provides a strong emotional core to the book. My only real complaint is my disappointment that we did not get more of his "apprentice warlock" Bree, from the first book. I'm hopeful that in future books we'll see Finch set up his detective agency with all the secondary characters that we have been introduced to. Fortunately, book 3 in the series is promised for March 2025. A highly recommended series.
Another mystery, another murder and another monster or two to hunt. Whether he likes it or not, Adair Finch is back to being a private investigator and he's got some company. Solving this murder will take all 3 of them, repeating and repeating the day, to figure out who did the killing and why. The humour is top notch but doesn't upstage the writing. The characters are so well done. Enzo and Kull are great sidekicks and there are some heartwarming moments between them all. There is also mayhem and madness! Adair shows us how clever he is. even though he needed quite a few redos this time! That's part of the fun. I love this world! my rating 4.5 rounded
Finch is wearily—and with much chagrin—returning back into the world. While he'd prefer to go back into isolation, an ever-bubbly young witch is pushing him to open a private practice. Maybe he can deal with that issue another day. Though things get complicated when he and the little mischief spirit, Kull, discover the body of a social media starlet. Now, Finch will have to tap into his powers as a time-reversing warlock to solve a string of murders and right so many other wrongs, in twenty-four hours or less.
Great characters. Fascinating magic. Heart-felt moments. The search for what makes us human, and so much more.
I am really enjoying this series so far. It is extremely impressive that the author manages to really make the most of the time magic / Groundhog Day movie-like theme; though I have experienced many stories using the same concept, Stovall deftly claims it and makes it fresh again. The heartfelt struggles and growth of the characters was present in the first book, but it's so much more intense in this one. Finch and Kull (and now Enzo, who I also love) are really enduring and believable characters that I am extremely attached to and grow ever more so with each page. By the last page of book two, I have laughed a lot, cried a little, and developed a deep hope for everyone going forward. Finch is just such an amazing, strong-hearted MC. I can't wait to experience more adventures with him and his new, growing agency! Also, as someone who always reads along and listens to the Audible with Whispersync, I thoroughly enjoyed the narration. This gets an easy 10/10, and I can't wait for the next Kindle and Audible pairing to be released!
Wow. I really liked the first book. I absolutely loved the second one. It took everything I enjoyed about the first and dialed it up to 11. Then added on a beautiful and heartwarming tale of a spirit on a journey to learn what it is to be human. On top of that it throws in a werewolf and his family. Way to tug the heartstrings. Marvelously written. Magic, suspense, thrills, and time shenanigans galore. It's an amazing read and I can't wait for future adventures of Adair Finch.
I really enjoyed this series with its unique premise and world building. Normally I don't like stories that involve weird wolves but this one is a nice change face and I did enjoy the character. Kull gives me anxiety in a good way, and I identify Adair maybe a Iittle too much.
I am very pleased to say that this might overtake position of favorite Shami Stovall book!!! I am blown away!! I thoroughly enjoyed this installment and I cannot wait for more Finch, Kull, Enzo, and friends!! This story has so much growth and empathy. I don’t even know what to say without rambling and spoiling.
Chronos Warlock is the second book in Shami Stovall’s Chronos Chronicles, following Adair Finch, the time-rewinding warlock bound to Chronos. This time, Adair gets pulled into a murder mystery in Oakland’s supernatural underworld while trying to find a human body for Kull, a mischievous spirit who insists she wants to truly experience life.
My thoughts: I absolutely loved this book! The highlight for me was the interaction between Kull and Finch—watching her discover the joys (and pitfalls) of being human, while Finch at first begrudgingly helps her and then slowly starts to truly care, trying his best to give her the experiences she craves. Their dynamic was funny, heartfelt, and surprisingly moving.
The central case was also really engaging, full of twists and great reveals. I also really enjoyed meeting new characters along the way, especially Enzo, who quickly became a standout for me. Always had a soft spot for Werewolves 😍
Honestly, I liked this installment even better than book one—the mystery was sharper, the relationships deeper, and the emotional beats hit harder. A fantastic mix of humor, heart, and supernatural intrigue. Can’t wait to see where Finch and Kull’s story goes next!
I enjoyed this book SO MUCH! The writing is seriously amazing. The characters are all so unique and lovely. The narration is fantastic. I just absolutely love it! Humorous and magical and just such a fun read!! I will be getting book 3 to listen to ASAP!
I absolutely love this series! The author has an amazing way of making the repetitive nature of time rewinding so entertaining. The characters are very well written and you connect with each of them. I am looking forward to more of Adair in the future.
The sequel builds beautifully over the first book. Very smartly written, the story leaps over the mundane and lands on the juicy bits. All the main characters are wonderfully fleshed out. And I love how Adair Finch just has no time for nonsense (pun intended). Neither does the author. The result is a fantastic, warm, witty urban fantasy mystery thriller. I love these modern authors and their freedom from genres.
I like the series, but the Groundhog Day feel of it can be repetitive when it gets too long. I get why it’s necessary to solve mysteries but I got somewhat weary of it this go around when they went back in time simply for inconveniences. I do like that this delves into questions of what makes someone human and that a larger cast of characters is being developed. Despite the book being about Adair Fjnch, much of the focus is on the side characters in this one. I do love that the spirit character with him (not sure what name she will settle into) is growing and learning what it means to stick around with humans.

As an aside, I do want to ask the author to show me on the doll where California hurt her, because both books have multiple statements and asides that clearly demonstrate her disdain for the state (where she features two of the worst cities in the state as representative of “all things wrong with California”). One was just confusing: she writes something like:
Despite California having been in a drought for 15 years, the fire fighters sprayed deluges of water to extinguish it.
Um. Isn’t that what firefighters do? And not *despite* a drought but BECAUSE of a drought. Any fire has to be eliminated IMMEDIATELY because EVERYTHING is flammable.
Warlock and former private investigator Adair Finch claims to have retired. After failing to prevent the death of his brother Carter, all Adair wants is to be left alone, to wallow in guilt and misery.
The universe has other ideas. For one thing, Adair owes a debt to Kullthantarrick the Sneak, the mischief spirit who helped him bring down a corrupt police officer and a villainous band of witches in his last case. After centuries of loneliness, Kull wants to know what it feels like to be human and to fall in love. The warlock has promised to find her a human body to inhabit so she can fulfill this desire—even though this means she’ll lose her immortality. They discover the body of a murdered social media star, which Kull declares to be perfect. Adair won’t be satisfied, though, until he identifies and apprehends the killer.
Meanwhile, Adair’s demanding landlord insists that the PI determine whether his wife is involved in an adulterous affair. Then there’s Adair’s former colleague Enzo, a police officer who’s been turned into a werewolf and forced to leave his beloved family. Though the warlock is bitter and cynical, he has a soft heart. He can’t seem to resist the urge to help people, especially when he knows that his magical powers—the ability to rewind time and to unleash a lethal firestorm upon his enemies—give him a potent advantage in almost any situation.
Chronos Warlock was even more fun than the first book in Shami Stovall’s series, which I reviewed last year. This is largely due to the character of Kull. Taking over the gorgeous body and the glamorous life of super-influencer Fox-Pistol, she is hilarious in her quest to understand the essence of being human. Alternately bold, naïve, outrageous and vulnerable, she pretty much steals every scene. Adair serves as the straight man, trying to protect her while resisting her undeniable appeal.
Like the previous book, this one is set in Stockton and Oakland, California—hardly the most glamorous of locales, but a very creative choice. The two working-class cities are hotbeds of supernatural activity. Oakland teems with witches, warlocks, vampires, werewolves, demons, half-spirits and elves. The redwood elves turn out to be particularly nasty creatures, elegant, devious and ruthless. They’re among the foes Adair must outmaneuver in order to find Fox-Pistol’s killer, locate and save his landlord’s errant wife, heal the emotional wounds of his colleague Enzo, and generally set the world to rights.
As in the previous novel, Adair’s ability to reset time proves pivotal to the plot. After a while this device gets a bit monotonous, however. For instance, Adair replays a hand of poker in the elves’ lair dozens of times, until he knows every card that will be dealt. To be honest, I lost interest at this point, especially since the outcome was preordained. Fortunately, other aspects of the tale, including the complicated structure of magic in Ms. Stovall’s world, kept me reading.
Overall, Chronos Warlock is an enjoyable, lively and sometimes surprising continuation of the series. In the next book (which I assume will eventually be published, given the hints in this one), I’d like the author to lean a bit less heavily on the time-manipulation and explore other ways for Adair to save the day.
TL;DR Review: Urban fantasy murder mystery, but with a cozy twist and lovely insights into the wonders of being human.
Full Review: It was such a delight to be back in Adair Finch’s world! Time-Marked Warlock gave me a Dresden-esque adventure, but with such a cozy twist, thanks to the addition of twelve-year-old Bree. In Chronos Warlock, the Dresden flavor remains, but the tone takes a slight shift—less cozy, more insightful into human nature. This time, Adair is investigating the murders of young women, including famous influencer Fox-Pistol. There’s just one problem: Fox-Pistol’s body has been taken over by Kull, the mischief spirit who helped him in the first book, and she wants to experience everything the world has to offer—while trying not to get murdered again. Kull’s enjoyment of the world is so naïve and genuine that you can’t help laughing and loving everything along with her. Whether it’s the taste of everybody’s favorite foods (pizza and hamburgers), her hunt for the perfect outfit, or her quest to find true love, her wide-eyed innocence is refreshing and such a great contrast to Adair’s brooding nature. I loved being along for the ride as Kull bounced and tripped her way through the world that sees her as a high-powered, wealthy influencer. I found it a really enjoyable exploration of the reality behind the entire world of social media, how what we see portrayed on camera is so often far from the truth. But Kull using that influence and wealth to help Adair on his investigation helps him get into places he might never have otherwise, which makes everything flow more smoothly. And about that investigation… With Time-Marked Warlock, it felt like the hunt for the murderer took more center-stage, with the cozy moments with Bree fit in around them. In Chronos Warlock, the murder investigation kind of meandered, with Adair and Kull moving in a new direction nearly every time he rewinds time. And I didn’t mind that at all, because it drove home the truth of this story: the murder of it all is just window dressing for the very human experience that the author is portraying through these stories. It adds just enough suspense and danger to keep things interesting, but as with Book 1, it’s the characters and their respective evolutions that really make this a story to love. The addition of other characters promise fun and intriguing things for future installments, and I for one can’t wait to see who next drags Adair Finch off to some murder—and what new, human adventure he’ll go along on the way. If you are looking for an urban fantasy murder mystery with a cozy twist and wonderful insights into the human experience, you’re going to love Chronos Warlock as much as I did.
I’m really enjoying this series, and Chronos Warlock continues to deliver exactly what I loved about the first book while adding new, exciting elements to keep things fresh. Like the first entry, Adaire finds himself drawn into an investigation that keeps escalating, with someone always pushing him to take on more than he bargained for. But this time, the roster around him has changed, bringing a fresh dynamic to the familiar structure.
Running alongside Adaire are a half-spirit and a werewolf—both fantastic additions who breathe new life into the series' ensemble. Kull, a returning character, is particularly noteworthy. Though she’s technically the same person we met before, so much has changed about her that she feels like a new character entirely. It’s an organic, well-earned transformation that makes perfect sense within the story’s world, and adds depth to both her character and the overall narrative.
Even though this installment follows a similar pattern to the first, it never feels repetitive. The stakes remain high, and Shami Stovall skillfully maintains a delicate balance between Adaire’s unique ability to rewind time and the real, palpable sense of danger faced by the characters. It’s a difficult tension to sustain, but it’s handled wonderfully here.
On top of all that, Shami continues to weave in subplots and threads that hint at larger, series-spanning plots without ever slowing down the immediate story. It’s a testament to her talent for pacing and narrative layering that everything feels cohesive and engaging from start to finish.
Highly recommended for anyone who enjoyed the first book and for readers looking for a fantasy mystery series with clever mechanics, rich characters, and compelling stakes.
I was granted complimentary access to Chronos Warlock by Shami Stovall as part of my participation in a blog tour for this title with Goddess Fish Promotions, and I also reviewed the first book in the series through the same connection. Thank you to all involved in affording me this opportunity! As always, my thoughts are my own and my review is honest.
As I commented in my review of Time-Marked Warlock, I absolutely love Stovall's narrative style. You won't find a lot of purple prose here, no time wasted on unnecessary details, but you'll see it all unfolding in your mind's eye just the same. These books are fast paced, captivating, and cinematic.
Main character Finch is a Warlock that has the same charm to him that drew me to the Dresden Files stories, but fear not, he totally unique. Finch can control time, but only the recent past. Many authors have tried and failed to utilize "Groundhog Day" in a way that doesn't feel tired, but Stovall has done it with Adair Finch and this series.
This second instalment in the series goes where plenty of urban fantasies go quite soon, and that's werewolf territory, but once again this big bad dog man isn't the brutish villain you expect him to be. He's a morally grey but loveable ally in this crazy world, and that's exactly what Finch needs to help solve his latest murder mystery and fend off a few enemies with old grudges along the way.
I love it, I love it, I love it! I want more! These books are fun, familiar but unique, and and demand being read all at once. Check them out!
Chronos Warlock is the second book in the author's series, however you can read this one as a standalone as there is a summary of what happened in the previous book and even before that. I would recommend that you read book number 1 however called Time-Marked Warlock. In that first book you will meet Bree, a 12-year-old girl looking from help from Finch (Adair is our MMC's actual name, but he doesn't use it much). Finch is a powerful warlock with the ability to rewind time, which as I read in the first book and found really cool as a power to have. Chronos Warlock picks up when Finch is at a morgue trying to help Kull chose a body to inhabit and as with the first book the author does a great job with Finch interacting with Kull and conversations are hilarious. Finch gets an odd message from someone named Jay-W in the middle of the night and is in need of Finch's assistance in a personal matter. Throw in Finch just getting used to the fact that his brother who was also a powerful warlock is now dead, and this book makes for a great read! And the rest of the author's writing is so amazingly real it's great to read. For example, Finch gets bored with a conversation, so he rewinds time to before it happened and 'fixes' it, so he doesn't have to have that exact conversation. Wouldn't we all like to do that??? And the ending is perfect and also leaves open the book to another Finch book in the series, especially with the mention of Jessica Finch:)
Private investigator and warlock Adair Finch must complete his pact with the mischief spirt Kull, and they just found the perfect dead body for her to inhabit. Kull becomes a social media star named Fox-Pistol and is determined to find true love. Yet Finch wants not only to solve the murder, but help one of his old friends find out what's going on with his wayward wife. Both cases yank him deeper into the mess of Oakland and put a target on his back. Can Finch find the murderer and his friend's wife without ending up on a coroner's slab himself?
This is the second fantastic book in the urban fantasy series, The Chronos Chronicles, and I loved it just as much as the first. Finch has the unique power to rewind time as many times as he needs to, but only to a certain point he's marked no longer than 24 hours ago. It gives him an advantage investigating cases, but there's always the chance something or someone takes him by surprise. We get a lot more Kull in this book and not in any animal form. She plays the social media star well, but being human will take practice. Finch enlists the help of a werewolf and former police officer, Enzo. I really like the addition of him to the team. He's gruff but has a good heart. There are awesome twists to the plot (which I will not spoil!), and I stayed up long past my bedtime reading. Totally worth it.
Adair Finch, the most powerful warlock in the world, is back in business!
But first, he has to complete his pact with a mischief spirit and find her a human body. It seems like it might take a while; but on his way to Oakland, Finch stumbles upon the dead body of a social media star — which is both a solution and a major problem.
Oakland is teeming with werewolves, full moon witches, vampires, and redwood elves, most of whom aren’t on good terms with Finch. That means Finch must navigate his way through the supernatural world to gather clues about the murder, all while dodging old enemies and rivals.
Good thing Finch has a pact with Chronos. With time on his side, perhaps he can do the impossible…
Considering I haven't read the book that this follows on from I will definitely going back and reading that. I love the magic, murder and urban fantasy this book has to offer.
Each character had great development to them and I just fell in love with them all. Adair, kull and Enzo are just a great trio.
I flew through this book and honestly couldn't put it down. It was a easy read without being simple and lacking detail.
Thank you for allowing me to read and review this amazing book. Thank you the write reads
3 1/2 stars. This is Ground Hog Day meets Urban Fantasy, and the way I would imagine it too be. Adair, a Chronos warlock, can rewind a day to a specific time if he marks the time, as many times as he needs to to get it right (and sometimes he needs many times to get something right). This time he gets wrapped up in a searching for a serial killer when he was trying to fulfill his promise to a mischief spirit to find it a human body to live in. But things are complicated by an old client wanting him to track down his wife who might be cheating on him, elves, werewolves, and witches.
I really enjoyed seeing how the mischief spirit was like a child at first enthralled with the wonders of being human and all the possibilities. Of course, exposure to humanity--lies, heartbreak, violence, but also friendship and love--meant some of the shine came off but there was growth as a being and she might just turn out to be a good person in the end. And, oh, Adair, himself might experience some growth out his grumpy, isolated self when he runs into an old friend.
I loved, loved this magical detective story with a side of buddy comedy. It had a layered storyline, witty dialogue, an intriguing mystery, surprising plot twists, and suspense. I was equally desperate to read it all at once to solve the mystery and also to savor it and make it last. Adair Finch is the most powerful warlock in the world and one of the best private investigators for hire. When his brother died, he retired from PI work and stopped living his life but he’s recently joined the world again. While working on finding a human body that he promised Kull, the mischief spirit bound to him, and on his way to talk to a client about a new job, the pair stumble on the corpse of a social media star. And Kull becomes Samantha/Fox-Pistol. The interactions and juxtaposition between grumpy Adair, vibrant and innocent Samantha/Kull, and angry Enzo the werewolf was what really made this story so very good. The character arc for all of them was delightful despite the story being about murder. I cannot say enough about how much I enjoyed this story. I need more of these characters in my life.
I really enjoyed Time-Marked Warlock and thought it would be difficult to top. I'm so glad that I moved almost straight into Chronos as it is bleeding fantastic.
Adair Finch is a PI. He also has the ability to rewind time within a set twenty four hour limit. On finding a dead girl in the woods he finds himself on a mission to find her killer Groundhog Day style. As with the previous book, this is told in a very tongue in cheek way and had me actively laughing out loud at points. The characterisations are excellent and I enjoyed our mischief spirits transition from spirit to human a lot, even if I mourned the loss of my cute and funny animal companion.
The mystery element of the novel is well done, although the moment the culprit was introduced I pegged them as being involved. That didn't matter so much though as the journey to get there was genuinely well done. I also liked the fact that this is starting to have a found family theme. Adair seems to be very good at picking up waifs and strays and there's several in this book.
All in all, an excellent continuation of the series and I'm absolutely invested enough to have picked up the third book instantly.
Adair is looking for a body to complete his pact with Kull but when he finds one, although it is perfect for her, it also comes with questions. The body is of a murdered woman, Fox-Pistol, a media star, but who murdered her and what happened to the boyfriend she was with. This book covers the search for the murderer as well as a job for a millionaire, Jay-W, who needs information on his wife. With the time repeating, this book ends up with a couple of mysteries, a new ally, Enzo the werewolf and former cop. Kull is a combination of innocence, hope, curiosity and bravery. Her learning about the human world can be hilarious at times. There are elves as well as other supernatural characters and all are believable. There is a bit of action, a couple of mysteries, surprises and humour. The idea of being able to repeat a day and solve problems is fantastic. Some of the reactions to the knowledge that they’ve gained on each repeat is perfect. An easy reading, humourous and enjoyable book.
This was another fantastic story by Shami Stovall. While I was a little surprised that we only had a tiny cameo by Bree, the interactions between Kull and Adair were excellent. While Kull learns to be human, and has so many firsts, they are also trying to solve a murder. Just like last time, what starts out as something simple begins to have additional layers added to it, and Adair has to use both his detective skills, his keen intellect, and the powers of Chronos to solve all the issues he stumbles across. While this happens, we meet people from his past, and we watch multiple characters go on journey's of healing and understanding. I loved this novel, and I cant wait to see what else is in store for Adair Finch, Kull, Bree (warlock in training) and all the other people from Adair's past we may meet along the way. Whenever the next book comes out I will definitely be picking it up and reading it right away.
Chronos Warlock by Shami Stovall is the second book in the Chronos Chronicles series. It is a perfect blend of a detective story and urban fantasy. It is fast-paced and a lot of fun to read. Adair Finch is a powerful warlock and private detective with a very unique power. He can reset time, but only for 24 hours. This means that he can have as many do-overs as he needs to solve any case he is investigating. In this one, Fich stumbles across the body of a young female YouTube star. Kull, the mischief spirit, decides this body will do perfectly for her to inhabit in order to become human. They soon become involved in an investigation to find out who murdered this young woman. With the help of an ex-cop now turned werewolf they will find out who is responsible no matter how many times it takes. A great start to a new urban fantasy series. I am looking forward to reading the next book in this series, 24-Hour Warlock.
The mischief spirit who has studied humans for 500 years and is encyclopedic on commercials, modern slang, memes and YouTube, suddenly becomes completely ignorant when she takes on a human body so she can ask "funny" questions.
The top detective, now Werewolf, can't stop his anger issues... or being a jerk and asking really dumb questions, that will make you question how he ever made it to cop, let alone detective. Again, supposed to be "funny."
And the Warlock who can control time, but does so in the worst possible way, wasting a month of time figuring out how to win at blackjack, which can be done in one night, and doing it to save a rich man from having to pay some gambling debts, in other words, for no reason.
So much of this book is just grinding pointless and dumb. It was a chore getting through and had no payoff.
What delighted me about the book was twofold: first, Stovall took a character archetype that find shallow, then stood it on its head. A mischief spirit in the last book, she’s found her new body, a ditzy-headed young adult who lives for their content. She’s fabulously attuned to the social media life.
Second, our hard-boiled detective is a softy with a real awareness of women’s issues. Not unexpected, given that the writer is female, but she didn’t have to write that into his character, it would have been more true to detective noir to make him a sneering, cynical misogynist.
Watching the two of them navigate what it means to be human, and moreover, what love means, creates more than a few grins. Add in a murder plot, a possibly philandering wife, an overbearing client, unscrupulous elves, insolvent street persons and a werewolf with anger management issues … now THAT’s a story!
Adair's old client, Jay-W, keeps contacting the warlock to hire him for investigation, and doesn't take no for an answer. When Adair, accompanied by Kull, finally decide to go to Oakland, they get stopped on the way only to discover a murder scene. And so a new loop begins.. Elves, werewolves, spirits, the undead. This book has a new range of supernaturals, new flavors of magic, and the very hilarious addition of spirits trying to be human. Murders, gambling, cheating, violence - the story has a lot of action to keep moving fast, and it never feels repetitive despite Adair using his magic all over again. The most endearing is watching Kull discover the human reality, shaking her beliefs acquired from watching movies and internet, while she keeps her mischievous nature and undying optimism. I am also glad for the connection between Enzo and Adair, and hoping there will be more of this peculiar PI.
