When you choose a Hurst book you know there won’t be any slow parts, or that you will have to go to hospital from boredom. I always know there will be some outlandish plot where I have to put disbelief away and keep it locked up.
This is the third in the doctor’s wive series, where both Alice, Fern and Tomlin (the detective) have their own POV. As for the other books in the series, there will be a cat and mouse theme, with a big finale that is fitting for the whole series. It’s a book where revenge, desperation and doing everything for your children are major themes, so if you like those in a book here you’ll have them all!
I was a bit saddened by how Alice coped after being released from prison, and wish she would have been more feisty. Her relationship status also felt a bit off, but it fitted the plot so I won’t complain about it.
I also wished there was less repetition from what had happened before, as if you’ve read the previous books it was unnecessary. Also we didn’t really need to know more about how the doctor conned his wife, we already knew that. I also got a bit tired of the sentence ‘get my own back’. We get it!
Overall the book gives you enough entertainment to ignore some stereotypical characters with straightforward motivation, the plain language and unbelievable ending (although it was interesting)
Thanks to netgalley and the publisher for the arc!
The Doctor's Mistress is the 3rd novel in Doctor's Wife series, is it the last?🤔
Told in three PoVs; the widow, the mistress, and the ex-detective. The Doctor's Mistress is a relatively fast-paced read once it gets going. You can read this as a standalone, the first half goes over a lot of the backstory.
Personally, I enjoyed the second book, "The Doctor's Widow" the most because it was the JUICIEST. What's disappointing about the third is there were no jaw-dropping twists and it sort of ended on a nice note. 😄 This one is still a popcorn thriller without the butter.🍿😲
I listened to the audiobook and I thought both narrators were good but at times, I forget if I was listening to the wife or the mistress, they sounded the same.
Thank you Bookouture Audio and Netgalley for the ALC. 7H 13M Available Dec 6, 2023
Another thrilling, gripping and twisted tale by Daniel Hurst where a wife and the mistress are playing a game of cat and mouse. Both women loved the wrong man. Both cannot move on with their lives - not when revenge is getting in their way!
This book will work as a stand-alone but I highly suggest reading the first two books: The Doctor’s Wife and The Doctor's Widow before taking on this bad boy girl. They are both gripping and entertaining books.
Alice was the Doctor's mistress and spent time in jail for Doctor Drew Devlin’s murder. She has been released after being cleared of the crime, has a baby and is looking for revenge. Tess/Fern is hiding and on the run. She also has a baby in tow and is constantly looking over her shoulder.
This book is told through 3 POV's and kept me on my toes. I had both the book and the audiobook which made for an enjoyable reading experience. I enjoyed the tension, the pacing, and the cat and mouse feel of this book. I have enjoyed reading about Fern/Tess and Alice from the very first book in the series and enjoyed reading about them once again. Have they changed? Have they grown now that they are mothers? You will have to read to find out. This was a fast paced and addictive read which had me turning the pages!
Thank you to Bookouture, Bookouture audio and NetGalley who provided me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All the thoughts and opinions are my own.
3.5⭐ Genre ~ psychological thriller Series ~ The Doctor's Wife, #3 Others in the series ~ The Doctor’s Wife, The Doctor's Widow Setting ~ Cornwall Publication date ~ December 6, 2023 Est page Count ~ 266 (p+ 33 chapters +e) Audio length ~ 7 hours 13 minutes Narrators ~ Sarah Durham, Luke R. Francis POV ~ dual 1st Featuring ~ cat & mouse, revenge
Tess, formally Fern, as we know her from the previous books, is on the run with her baby. Alice, with her own baby in tow, is out of the slammer and looking for revenge. Will she and her new man, Detective Tomlin, yes that detective, be able to find Fern and make her pay for what she's done?
I do enjoy a revenge plot and I liked the cat and mouse to a point, but the point felt like it took a while to get to. Neither of these women are likable, so it's hard to determine who to root for. There were some flashbacks for some reason from when the doctor was still alive, which took me a little away from this story since he's dead and gone, goodbye. But fine, he's the whole reason these two are in this mess.
Overall, another fine, fast paced crazy ride from this author. I was pleased with how it concluded...or did it?
Series notes: This is a continuation of the series that should be read in order for full enjoyment. It does give some back story, but if you've already read the others then the recap is not necessary and makes it a waste of pages.
Narration notes: Same narrators for the whole series, so that's nice. While Sarah did do a great job overall (she still needs to work on her man voice), I really wish we had two different narrators for the 2 women. Luke was fine.
*Thanks to the author, Bookouture Audio and NetGalley for the audio copy. I am voluntarily leaving my honest review*
I held off for so long with a Hurst experience. From what I’ve gathered, I assumed his books were popcorn thrillers similar to Freida McFadden. Then I noticed this was on NetGalley and thought why not.
Before I get to it…. this was the 3rd installment in a series, however, can be read as a standalone. We are given the backstory here that allowed me to be completely caught up. Thank goodness I didn’t read the others.
Folks, this is not good writing. The sentencing was cut and dry. It seemed liked when whoever’s point of view it was, it just lacked emotion… hell… and common sense for that matter. I thought to myself, these characters must be the most senseless people with all their idiotic decisions made. Just why?
** First of all - If you are an alleged serial killer and evading arrest, you’ve got to be some sort of criminal mastermind. At least a wee bit. Fern, the serial killer speaks like someone who hasn’t a clue to what they’re doing. No friggin’ way would she be able to manage escape and stay off the radar. ** People don’t just walk around and find someone to make them a fake ID to flee the country and trust them to do it. Like wtf. Then to end up just robbing them and fleeing the scene. ** The mistress is just as special as she is. Her # goal is to hunt down the wife who killed him and tried to frame her for his murder. ** Did I mention the mistress has a new fake boyfriend who happens to be a detective… or was once a detective? His role is to actually take care of Alice’s (mistress) baby because Alice is quite the shitty mother. He’s basically acting as a sole parent. What in tarnation is that all about?
BTW, both wife and mistress are left behind with babies. What a hot freaking mess! Terribly unbelievable. Clueless characters. Hot mess of a plot. With that said, no more Hurst for me.
Thank you NetGalley and Bookouture for an advanced readers copy. All opinions are my own. Release date December 6, 2023
The Doctor’s Mistress is the third installment in this series. Fern is on the run and Alice is out for revenge. The story is told from the POV of Alice, Fern, and Detective Devlin. I am always impressed when a thriller makes me care about the characters and their lives. Daniel Hurst has a talent for keeping me in suspense while keeping me invested in the characters as well. The plot is fast-paced with a constant sense of foreboding. I found myself cheering for both the wife and mistress at different times. The conclusion was unexpected and satisfying. I was entertained, gripped, and enjoyed every minute of this twisted saga. Thank you Bookouture and NetGalley for my copy.
The 3rd instalment in the brilliant ‘Doctor’ series and is every bit as exciting, tense and well written as the previous 2,I would think most readers have come to Book 3 having been on the journey with Fern and Alice but if you haven’t there are references to what has brought us to this point and it is easy to catch up Daniel Hurst is just so talented at writing a book that you start and cannot finish until you know the outcome,it is one of his trademarks…..his books are highly addictive, lucky for fans he is so prolific we get our fix regularly….and this book is no different, from page 1 to the last sentence I was full on into the story and loving it……his books remind you why reading is so wonderful,as always an excellent read…..
Šios serijos pirmoji dalis man tikrai patiko.
Man ši istorija pasirodė tokia apie nieką. Pasakojama apie kasdienybę ir motinystėje patiriamus iššūkius. Na, man asmeniškai, buvo tikrai nuobodu. Jokios intrigos ar įdomesnių siužeto posūkių. Skaitant vis mąsčiau kas man patinka šioje knygoje ir negalėjau sugalvoti kažko tokio. Na, pliusas šios knygos tas, jog puslapiai vertėsi greitai, o ir knygos apimtis nėra didelė. Tad labai gaila, bet ši Hurst'o knyga nepateisino mano lūkesčių.
While parts of this were quite far fetched, it was also very entertaining! Offering lots of twists and turns, and very interesting characters. I’ve enjoyed watching their journey and look forward to the next!
I really enjoyed the latest installment in the Doctor's Wife series, the previous and middle book named The Doctor's Widow. This author is an auto-buy one for me, I have loved some of his other books, and I never need to read the blurb! I was straight back into Fern's story, and didn't need to remind myself of the earlier events, as Hurst does the job very early on. I would definitely recommend reading in order, or you will lose so much of the brilliance of this series- and why would you deprive yourself of that?! There were some events I expected, but some were great, and I remember gasping in shock at the drama unfolding. I am so excited to see there is book 4 planned in this series, and you will see my review in May 2024!
This is the third in The Doctor’s Wife trilogy; I have read all three. I’m not sure you can fully appreciate this one without having read the first two.
In the first book, Fern murdered her cheating husband, Dr. Drew Devlin, and framed his lover, Alice, for the crime. Having enlisted Alice’s husband to help her, she also killed him, making it look like suicide. While happily spending Drew’s very large insurance policy money in book 2, Fern met a new man who was not who he said he was and she ended up murdering him, with the book ending in a cliffhanger. This, book 3, resolves the cliffhanger.
Alice has been cleared of the crimes and is released from jail. She also has given birth to Drew’s child and has hooked up with the detective who arrested her. Her greatest desire, however, is to hunt down Fern, seek vengeance, and bring her to justice. Fern, meanwhile, has given birth to her last lover’s child, changed her identity, and is living hand to mouth in Cornwall.
Told from alternating POVs, this book, as was the first, is an engrossing, fast read that I couldn’t put down. You may continue to hate some (or all!) of the characters, but you will enjoy this psychological thriller. It is an entertaining, escapist read; perfect as a “popcorn thriller.”
The Doctor’s Mistress is book #3 in this series and I do believe you can read it as a stand alone but I did love the first 2 books in this series. I want to thank NetGalley and the publisher for both the audio version and the kindle version of this book. I tried listening to it first on audio but was getting so confused between the 2 women because they used the same narrator for both. I decided to switch over to the kindle version and was able to follow that one much easier.
I loved this! It's strange because I always thought that Alice was the most wronged party in this series, it just wasn't fair what she went through and Fern must be stopped. However, I found myself wishing that Fern's luck changed and she had a bit of more luck.
The wife. The Mistress. Who will get their revenge?
This is the third instalment of the Doctors wife series. There is enough backstory through the book for it to be read as a standalone.
Tess aka Fern is on the run with her her baby after leaving a slew of bodies in her wake. Alice (the former mistress) also with baby in tow is out of prison after being set up and her prison sentence pardoned in light of new evidence. Alice is now in a relationship with Detective Tomlin - the one who is after Fern.
This a a fast paced, cleverly plotted popcorn thriller. Did I need to suspend belief? Sure, but the story was so engaging and entertaining, I didn’t mind. I love Hurst’s books, they are always full of secrets, drama and clever twists.
Many thanks to @bookotoure and @netgalley for an ALC 🎧 I really enjoyed the duel narrators.
I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review. The Doctor's Mistress is the third book in Hurst's exciting series, The Doctor's Wife, and like the previous books it delivered a gripping and twisted tale. A tale of two women whose love for a cheater brought nothing but despair in their lives. The wife is on the run for murder. The mistress languishes in prison for a crime she did not commit. In this instalment, both women are caught in a game of cat and mouse with only one outcome, who will have the ultimate revenge.
In The Doctor's Mistress, Alice, the mistress name is cleared, and she has been released from prison. However, her troubles have just begun. She gave birth to the doctor's child, and she is not coping well in taking care of the baby. Her prison experience coupled with her obsession for revenge made her life a mess. If it wasn't for her relationship with the detective who investigated the doctor's murder, which led to her gong to prison, the poor child would have suffered more.
Alice is not the only who gave birth, Fern is also a new mother. Now not only is she fighting to stay out of prison for herself, she now has a baby to consider. So she is willing to do what it takes to ensure her daughter does not end up in the foster care.
The characters of course are not nice people, but I had my favourite. Despite Fern's diabolical nature, I secretly hoped she would continue to evade capture. As for Alice, I was never a fan of hers from the beginning and that has not changed even after all that transpired in The Doctor's Mistress. As for the detective, I am still trying to figure out his reasons for his involvement with Alice. I am not sure if he was with her out of guilt, pity, or both.
Can the Doctor's Mistress work as a stand-alone? Probably, Hurst provide sufficient information for readers new to the series. However, for full enjoyment, I recommend you start with The Doctor's Wife and read the series in order.
This is as much detail I am willing to give because to provide more will only lead to spoilers. However, readers who are big fans of the revenge trope will want to pick up this series. Readers can prepare for another fast-paced, twisty, and crazy edge of your seat ride. This review was originally posted on Totally Addicted to Reading
The doctor's wife is still running away. The doctor's mistress is still chasing her.
The doctor's wife is doing everything she can in order to stay hidden. The doctor's mistress is doing everything she can to expose her.
The doctor's wife is on her own. The doctor's mistress has help.
The doctor's wife does not want to go to prison. The doctor's mistress would love nothing more than to put her behind bars.
Is the doctor's wife gaining distance or is the doctor's mistress gaining in on her?
And what if it would come to a head to head? Who would you put your money on?
If you have not read any of these author's books, you really should give them a try and if you are looking for a wonderful series, you can start by this one.
This third book is as good and as surprising as all his other stories. I enjoyed it thoroughly. 5 stars
The Doctor’s Mistress ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.5 Author: Daniel Hurst
I requested a digital advanced readers copy from NetGalley, Bookouture and Bookouture Audio and providing my opinion voluntarily and unbiased.
Synopsis: The wife. The mistress. Who will get their revenge?
I was the other woman. The mistress. Everyone blamed Doctor Drew Devlin’s death on me. And I’ve paid the price for loving the wrong man.
Now, I have dark circles under my eyes because I can’t sleep at night. I lost everything – friends, family, my home and even my freedom. Drew’s devious wife Fern tore my whole world apart. And she thinks she’s got away with murder.
But she’s wrong. It’s time for revenge. For myself… and for my baby.
Her new life on the windswept Cornish coast is about to come crashing down around her. I’m determined for everyone to find out the true story. Because now it’s not just my life in danger, I’ve got to protect the doctor’s daughter too.
I know Fern will expect me to come after her – I’m certain she will have her own plan in place to stop me. After all, she’s duped so many people before.
But then again, Fern always did underestimate me. And by the time she realises, it’ll be far too late for the doctor’s wife…
My Thoughts: This is the third book in The Doctor’s Wife series and does a phenomenal job at tying the three novels together, but is it the end? I love the way Hurst writes, full of secrets, betrayal, and twists. Even the twists have twists. Hurst is also known for suspending belief within the plot lines, which I have no problem with. Even though this is a series book, there is enough repetition in the book to be read as a standalone, however, for maximum character enrichment, I would recommend reading all three in order. Alice was freed from jail and is swept up in getting revenge on Fern, almost to the point of loosing the luster for life, including her own child. Fern has been in hiding with her own child for some time and has even established some friendships and routines, a dangerous activity for someone on the run. This follows the tropes of revenge, desperation, and a parent would do anything, I mean anything for their child and/or to keep their child safe. This also follows the cat and mouse theme with a larger than life finale that was just perfection.
The story was narrated by the widow, Tess/Fern, the mistress, Alice, and the ex-detective, Tomlin. I loved the different play on the narrators in this installment. Tess/Fern has devious undercuts but has mellowed out with a baby in tow and the baby is the only thing that matters to her. Where for Alice, the only thing that matters to her is revenge, and everything, her relationship and child are an afterthought. The characters are not likable, written that way, but in someways could be relatable. The characters were developed with depth, envy, mystery, and brilliantly curated. The author’s writing style was complex, twisty, suspenseful, and just brilliant. The characters were established and the backstory continued a bit, there were some flashbacks with the good ole doctor, the plot was delivered in many twisty layers, and the ending, I LOVED the ending!
I have both the digital and audio ARCs. The story was narrated by Sarah Durham and Luke R. Francis. The narrators do an amazing job with pitch and flow. Nailed the voice variation where each character had their own distinction. The narrators were easy to listen to on 2x with no problem. This was a fast paced, dark, captivating psychological thriller that will keep you turning pages, or escaping to listen. I loved this whole series so much that I have read some of Hurst’s other works. I think my favorite of the series was the second book, but this one was still great! If you like Freida McFadden, you will love Hurst. I highly recommend this book. Available in Kindle Unlimited.
Daniel hurst never disappoints. The last book in the series highly anticiapated. Can be read as a stand alone novel as it is skillfully recapped. Told from differing points of view. This final installment gave a greater insight into both the women and the men in this saga. This pulls the story together and focuses more on relationships. Well written i felt so many emotions for the characters pity hate joy but mainly understanding. A simple plot which was brilliant to see unfold and full of action in ways i was not expecting. The ending came too soon and was unexpected.. i felt happy for the characters but sad as a reader. . Thank you to netgallery and publisher and author for a highly recommended 5 star read.
Daniel Hurst, the king of thrills, returns following THE DOCTOR'S WIFE (#1), and THE DOCTOR'S WIDOW (#2), with THE DOCTOR'S MISTRESS (#3) — my favorite of the three, a gripping followup when the Mistress is obsessed with tracking down the Widow for revenge —to make her pay for having set her up for murder.
Presently, both women have babies, which adds to the complexity. Then we have a few more characters involved... Will motherhood win out in the end?
Daniel, Please, a #4, THE DOCTOR'S DAUGHTER! I would love to see how this works out! Can you imagine?!
Picking up from the previous books, Fern (Dr. Drew's wife/widow) has escaped all the murders and the police. She is hiding out in Cornwall, but of course, not the finest part because she is living under the radar with little money and changed her appearance. She is slumming it, unlike her previous life of glamour.
In the previous books, we all despised Fern (wife/widow) and felt sorry for Alice (mistress). However, in THE DOCTOR'S MISTRESS, the tables are turned. Fern turns out to be the nice one, a loving mother, and Alice is so driven by revenge after being set up for murder and spending time in prison, she has no time, love, or patience for a baby or Tomlin. (the detective)
Poor Tomlin (the cop who arrested Alice) has now fallen for her, and they are in a relationship. Pretty much one-sided. He loves the little girl and thinks if he can find Fern, Alice will be happy. The poor man is the one working and taking care of the baby, while Alice goes off impulsively like a wild woman. She has no bond with the little girl.
Fern and Alice both have baby girls. Fern's baby is not Drew's (but Greg's), Drew's friend whom she murdered when he was getting too close to the truth. He was pretending to love her. Alice (has Drew's baby girl).
Told from POVs: Alice, Fern, and Tomlin, we get an action-packed scene at the beginning where someone's baby has been taken—but at this point, we do not know which one. This wraps up nicely at the end, where we find out.
Fern: Cornwall: Daughter: Cecilia. She has papers and documents and is going by another name. Funny story about how she got them. I will hand it to Fern; she is resourceful and a survivor. Then she has the horrible landlord and the crazy Victoria neighbor. (some funny scenes) Note: never transfer money in someone else's name! Even though Fern is a murderer, she is a lot of fun in this installment. Looking forward to seeing how Pierre turns out.
Alice: Arberness: Daughter: Evelyn. Now out of prison and living with Tomlin, she is selfish and self-centered, thinking of no one but herself (until the end). She is getting nowhere with her PI, but little does she know Tomlin has hired a PI, and they have picked up a trail for Fern. The baby reminds her of Drew, with whom she had an affair.
But when they pick up Fern's trail, she does not want to go to the cops; she wants to handle it herself, and no place for a baby. What will Alice do? I was losing all patience with Alice and her revenge obsession and enjoyed Fern's connection with her daughter the most.
The showdown scene was well done, and I commend the author for writing it this way! Poor Tomlin cannot catch a break! When two mothers are pushed to the brim, you will be shocked at the twist of events when they put their babies first.
I enjoyed the Epilogue (5 years later), and the book wraps up nicely, but I hope this is not the end. I want to hear more from Fern and would like for the two baby girls to meet one another as teens. This would make for a juicy tale as THE DOCTOR'S DAUGHTER.
I was fortunate to have the e-book and the audiobook narrated by Luke R. Francis and Sarah Durham for a spine-chilling, action-packed, addictive performance!
I highly recommend reading the other two books prior to THE DOCTOR'S MISTRESS. A wicked, fun game of cat-and-mouse thriller and a nice catchup with the characters. My favorite of the series!
Thanks to Bookouture for an ARC and ALC advanced review copy.
Unfamiliar with Daniel Hurst, I came across “The Doctor's Mistress” on NetGalley and was immediately intrigued by the description. Being the third installment in the series, I promptly purchased the first two books. I highly recommend that anyone who enjoys a captivating murder mystery evolving into a tale of revenge does the same. The first book “The Doctor’s Wife” impressed me, while the second “The Doctor's Widow” was my least favorite of the three. However, “The Doctor's Mistress” brought the entire story to a satisfying conclusion.
It's challenging to provide a synopsis without revealing details from the first two books. The author's diligent research and storytelling skills kept me guessing and craving more throughout the series. I highly recommend this 5-star book and will be exploring other works by this author.
I want to express my gratitude to Bookouture, Daniel Hurst, and NetGalley for providing me with the opportunity to delve into this ARC and share my honest review.
