At His Mary Magdalene’s Story is the fourth book in the Extraordinary Women of the Bible historical fiction series.
Mary Magdalene, a favorite in Herod’s court, is living a life she could only dream of. But darkness plagues her, and it seems the more she indulges, the emptier she feels. Why can no one see her? Then one day John the Baptizer is dragged into the court. His words enrage Herodias—but they pierce Magdalene’s soul. He calls them all to repentance, but what does that mean? Soon, she flees the court and meets a Teacher who offers the love, forgiveness, and healing she has been longing for, and she understands John’s words. But following Jesus and providing for Him and His disciples brings some of her old enemies into conflict with Jesus. What if her faith and loyalty bring Him and His disciples more trouble?

I love the story of Mary Magdalene. I connect well with her inner dark struggles of doing what she didn't want to do. Being tortured emotionally and spiritually because of the sexual abuse experienced. My entire mental ability to cope isolated those experiences outside of my mind, like I wasn't there when it was happening. It altered who I wished to be, who I wanted, and my self worth. The freedom from my guilt and shame of the choices I made after these abuses ended were more than I could hold. My forgiveness from God resulted in a physical weight being felt as it was removed from me as far as the east is from the west. My reputation, my innocence, my despair were no longer the focus of my every thought. I was free. I was redeemed. I was loved. I had value. I had purpose. The God of the universe had sent His Son almost 2000 years before I was born to pay the penalty for my sins because He called me and cared for me before I was ever known.
This is one of my favorite redemption stories. I love the characters. I love the descriptive details of Mary's inner torture and her glistening hope of what she believes she needs to be rescued being ripped and removed before it had a chance to disappoint her as it would have in reality. Good steps into our lives usually at our lowest moments because that is usually when we have come to the end of our ability to do anything that could actually help.
The beauty of Mary's story is described by her Savior giving her an honor saved only for her and it is so incredible because of her past, her being a woman, and God allowing her love for Him to be remembered thousands of years later by us today. What a beautiful, humble, servant Mary became because of God's love, forgiveness, mercy, and grace.
This book had me cry thru half !! Well written you felt the pain Magdalene had in her heart & disappointment in her life . Till she met Jesus Christ healed from inside out , walked with Jesus for Years . She was blessed to be with Him After Resurrection !! First to see Christ Risen !! I say New Christians because of what Magdalene went thru Her thoughts in book . Jesus talking to her had me cry over & over !! I love books that make you have soul searching thoughts . Guide post has wonderful Authors !!!
The albeit imagined responses, thoughts, and emotions of comrades, onlookers, and recipients of miracles by Jesus provokes meditation on the reality of the events. Though familiar, how often these moments of Jesus' life are read, heard, and even studied, but without internalizing their reality. Even so, we have so much more yet to comprehend and learn. Thank you to Roseanna White for expanding my understanding through the story of a likewise undeserving follower of our Lord. It has stayed with me.
Mary Magdalene is one of my favorite people in the Bible. Her life demonstrates that, no matter what you have done in your life, how deep into sins you have walked, no one is too sinful for God to forgive.
I wanted to like this book. I’ve read almost every book in this series. This is the only one that did not hold my attention well enough for me to finish.
I have really enjoyed reading this book, I never really knew very much about Mary Magdalene and I liked how she was fictionalized. The actions and words from the Bible were in this story, with a lot of extra context thrown in. Thank you Roseanna M. White for writing this great book!
Mary Magdalene. Perhaps no name, no person in the Bible other than Jesus Himself, has stirred so much curiosity and controversy. The truth is, I sometimes avoid books that center on or even mention Mary Magdalene because I get tired of the controversy, the debates, and what are in my opinion blasphemous beliefs about her relationship with Jesus (and I do mean "relationship.") But trusting the Guideposts authors as I do, and knowing Roseanna M. White wrote At His Feet, I actually anticipated reading this Mary Magdalene story.
Roseanna M. White, I'm just gonna say it, knocked my socks off. The character of Mary Magdalene pops and sparkles. She leapt off the page and became real to me, both in her tortured state and especially as a follower of Jesus. Her dedication, her passion, her unfailing love, her sincere emotion... Mary Magdalene rocked and almost wrecked me. As in, I found myself saying, "Dear Jesus, how can You love me as much as You love people like Mary? I'm not nearly as emotional--except when I don't mean to be. I'm not anything like that!" But Jesus in His kindness nudged me, "Keep going. I have more than enough love to go around. I made you as you are, and you have more in common with Mary than you might think."
Well, Mary and I may have different personalities, but she continued striking me speechless throughout At His Feet. Her eagerness to learn and her tenacity in sticking with Jesus--yeah, I could identify with that. But Mary's actual willingness to stick in there and take the heat when following Jesus got almost impossibly hard--I found that nothing less than inspiring and encouraging, as in "giving courage."
Roseanna's plot also vibrates with great scenes that show not only who Mary Magdalene is, but who Jesus is. In At His Feet, I got an inside, detailed look at several scenes of His ministry. These are scenes the Gospels go over several times, but Roseanna's details bring to life in a new medium. Her details and sharp dialogue do the same thing for Jesus' interactions with the people and especially His disciples. For instance, there is probably no way I'd have shown Judas an eighth of the patience Jesus does here--but that's why He's Jesus. Those interactions both convicted me and reminded me of just how little I know about how "big" Jesus is.
Finally, I want to give Roseanna particular credit for how she paints Mary Magdalene after Jesus' resurrection. Most authors don't spend a lot of time here unless they're going into the early Church years, so I enjoyed seeing more of Mary Magdalene's growth. I also loved seeing her relationship with Mary, Jesus' mother and how they played off each other. (I loved how Roseanna calls Mary, Imma Mary. I realize that might have been to cut down on confusion, but it also felt heartwarming and intimate to me in a way that I, as a Protestant, have never experienced and kind of wish I did).
At His Feet is not the longest book in the Extraordinary Women series, but it is one of the most complex. I'd recommend reading it when you have plenty of space and time to dedicate to it. I first got my copy around Easter, which was great timing, but it fits well into your reading list any time of year, so grab a copy and savor!
Great story about Mary Magdalene’s life from the time right before Jesus rid her of her demons to the time of Jesus’ resurrection. Magdalene’s life was not in accordance to Jewish custom - she blacked out so often when the demons within her took over. When she met Jesus, her life totally changed. She and her friend Joanna followed Jesus and learned much from him. They became followers of Christ and Magdalene wanted to share his word with everyone. She was always there to do what was asked of her and was one of Jesus’ most devoted followers. The story weaves the time of Jesus’ crucifixion and Mary Magdalene’s story of accepting Jesus as her savior and following his teachings.
At His Feet is Mary Magdalene’s story in fictionalized form, part of Guideposts Extraordinary Women of the Bible series, which are stand alones.
This book is a rich, worshipful account of the transformation Jesus made in the life of Mary Magdalene. White has done an amazing job of making sense of the Biblical details and weaving them into a fascinating story. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it and plan to share it with friends. My own walk with Jesus will be richer because of this book.
I received a complimentary copy and was not required to write a positive review. All opinions expressed are my own.
White has written a beautiful story of the life of Mary Magdalene and the changes that came about in her life after going from living in Herod's castle to being a member of the group who followed Jesus. She brought each and every minute of her time with Jesus to life and displayed the effects that Jesus had upon her life. As well, White followed Jesus steps from the time Mary Magdalene met him through to his crucifixion, burial, and resurrection. This book is definitely a treasure to read.
Such a great fictional tale of Mary Magdalene that reminds us to be At Jesus's Feet. I loved how we get glimpses of some of Jesus miracles ans teachings plus the flashbacks to Good Friday make the book so great. A great read for Holy Week and Easter!
