this is a dark captive romance, scarred mute arsonist mmc + engaged fmc, forced proximity, captor / captive, obsession, insta lust, lots of fires (literally), trauma, mafia ties, cameos from the mcgowan mafia series, duo pov, standalone 🔥

i completely fell in love with phoenix the moment he showed up 🥹 learning about his past and how he got those scars just tore my heart a part 😭 this man deserves all the love and happiness and the fact that he finally found it was just EVERYTHING !! the way he’s never been kissed 👀 i simply melted (quite fitting considering what the theme of this book entails LOL). laura is someone who will bite back when cornered. she didn’t play damsel in distress or wait around. this woman took her life lessons by the balls and literally said fuck you to the universe 🙌🏼 i adore her and that fire in her. she’s also understanding and caring 🥰

these two are one of the cutest and fiercest couples out there !! i loved their story so much 🫀 you’re telling me that phoenix fully severed that scar which melted his lips shut just to finally get to kiss and taste laura ???? oh i want him BAD 😩 laura not being disgusted or afraid and instead helped him embrace his scars just made me love her even more. she always dreamed and wished for someone to love her with everything they have. finding that with phoenix and vice versa is just so beautiful 🥹 they’re perfect.

the man may be mute and shrugs 24/7 but when i tell y’all the things coming out of his mouth … i damn near fainted … i melted.

Wow. I came in wanting to know more and more about Phoenix and it had me in tears. This book was way more angsty, emotional, and intense than the rest of the books I read from Effie. It is definitely a shorter read, but boy Phoenix was obsessed with Laura on a whole different level. This book made me worried a bit since the two MCs didn’t get along together till way later, but in the end, it worked out. Also there’s a PONY! Muffin was mentioned and was so cute like they stole some of the scenes.

I enjoyed every page of this one!

Effie Campbell has a way with writing acts of revenge that is second to none. I’m always looking forward to seeing what creative uses her characters will find for everyday items to use to t0rtur€ others— expanding foam? (iykyk) It was probably demented of me to laugh out loud when I discovered it was flare guns this time around, but I make no apologies.

Laura is the curvy daughter of affluent parents who only seem interested in the next big business deal. They arrange to marry her off to a handsome Italian entrepreneur named Massimo. But Massimo isn’t what he appears to be, and when he shows up to his own engagement gathering with goons and guns, it’s safe to say that Laura will not be getting married after all.

Cue Phoenix, a mysterious masked man who serves as a fixer or cleaner. Except instead of using bleach, he uses fire to clean up the messes left by those in the criminal underground. His services will cost you, but his work and thoroughness are of the highest quality.

There’s no meet cute here between Laura and Phoenix. No instalove. Just dark, dark, darkness with Phoenix stashing her aboard his boat and deciding to keep her.

Will Laura escape? Will Phoenix harm her? Will they enact a truce in the interest of survival? What happens in the rest of the story is so good that you’ll just have to read it yourself! (Be sure to check trigger warnings, as there are some dark themes at play.)

If you like dark romance, suspense, creative vi0l€nc€, gun and knife vi0l€nc€, abduction, forced proximity / captivity, dub con, dirty talk, spicy scenes, arson, and revenge then you are going to love this one!

I never had much luck with this author, but I keep trying. The cover really drew me in here. I was hesitantly liking this, even though it was much darker than I expected. I liked the hero - he wasn't good to her, but he was never intentionally cruel. But what made me hate this book and the heroine is that she set him on fire. A burn victim. She intentionally set him on fire. She had other weapons - knives, scissors, literally anything else, but she chose fire. She set him and his house on fire. That was beyond cruel and unforgivable. I was so mad and disappointed at that part, I almost stopped reading. And the hero's response was to chase her and have sex with her? I couldn't believe it. She burned down his home with all his personal belongings and mementos, and she tried to BURN HIM ALIVE! A BURN VICTIM! She intentionally destroyed everything and he wasn't even mad.
It all fell apart for me at that moment. I read the whole book, but I couldn't get over what she did. And his first thought after sensing the fire was her. He deserved someone better.
I think that this book had potential to be great, but heroine's cruel actions ruined everything. And I won;t even mention all the crazy stuff that happens here. Him cutting open his lips, so he could kiss her, and immediately after doing it, going to her all bloodied and kissing her and doing stuff.

Don’t you find it fascinating to watch the flames 🔥 I do too always have they’re so mesmerising, apologies I digress. Our MMC enjoys nothing more than to play with fire, has the name and job to attest to this fact. Laura our FMC is destined to be the trophy wife, however her father’s plan for her to marry a mafia man fall to the wayside in a drastic way.

Fear not, she is saved from this life only to be thrown into the heat of another. Will she succumb to being lonely with a pony or fight for the light? The story takes you into the turmoil of their lives.

Diese Story … puh. Sie hat mich emotional komplett mitgenommen – sie hat mich sogar zum Weinen gebracht. Das hat schon lange kein Buch mehr geschafft. Respekt!
Effie erzählt die Geschichte von Laura, die behütet in einem vornehmen Zuhause aufgewachsen ist. Ihr Leben war darauf ausgerichtet, perfekt in die Gesellschaft der Schönen und Reichen zu passen – und letztlich eine gute Ehefrau für einen der Geschäftskontakte der Familie zu werden, um noch mehr Gewinne zu sichern. Ihre Gefühle und Wünsche? Ignoriert.
Doch der Abend vor ihrer arrangierten Hochzeit – dem einzigen Lichtstrahl am Horizont – verändert alles. Und bringt Phönix in ihr Leben.

Full disclosure, I loved the narration but wasn’t crazy about the story and unfortunately after getting a description of what the MMC looked like I was stuck with the image of Eugene Root (Arseface) from Preacher in my head and couldn’t see anything else other than him. Even down to the shakes that he drinks because like Pheonix, he too has no usage of his mouth due to a tragic accident.

I did like how the two main characters crossed paths. I felt so bad for them both. Laura never really knew what it was like to have true love and neither did Phoenix so in a way the two of them finding each other was a blessing even if it was done in the worst of ways. Laura makes Phoenix want things and Pheonix helps laura find her power. Both damaged in their own way but helping the other to heal. I’m glad I listened to the audiobook for this. The narrators did a really good job keeping it interesting. Their tonal inflections were on point each time and that’s a big part of what kept my interest in this one.

Phoenix…my sweet baby. How the world has hurt you yet you stayed so strong 😭😭

This was so good that anything under 5 stars feels criminal. If a man with a scarred mouth doesn’t slit his melted skin just so he can kiss you and talk to you…run. He’s not worth it.

The writing was beautiful and the author did an amazing job with both characters. I truly love this book and I would love a sequel to show us their life after this book and how they are dealing with the trauma, as well as him meeting some of his long distance family members. Idk I just want more 😭

Ідея спочатку виглядала цікаво — німий головний герой, дівчина, втягнута у сімейні схеми, але врятована своїм потенційним вбивцею — з цього можна було зробити щось глибоке й драматичне. Але, на жаль, написано так погано, що вся очікувана емоційність просто випарувалась.

Сюжет неправдоподібний, місцями абсурдний, а подекуди просто огидний. І сцена з ніж + рот — це вже за межею нормального, мені фізично стало погано. Я реально хочу скоріше забути деякі речі з цієї книги.

oooooffff masked man with a flare for the pyrotechnics! Phoenix’s infatuation with Laura was next level! I loved the push and pull the two MC’s had. I also loved that Laura was accepting of Phoenix’s disfigurement and stood by him when others called him a freak etc. The trauma Phoenix endured as a child/adolescent was hard to read and really broke my heart.
Laura is a survivor! Literally! The girl gets gunned down and fights! Hard! She also fights her attraction to our MMC because falling for her captor isn’t “socially acceptable”.. eventually she caves and then the spice starts spicing up!! And boy is it hot!!!! And kinky and ooooooof 🥵

One of the worst books i read this year. And it is silvester! It's not bad per se. It has an interesting conzept, the MC can't speak and is also not overage attractive due to his burnings. The base is good, but it's so badly written. The first half just works and sparks interest in what happen's next, but after the cottage on the Iland burns down, everything becomes generic. Addiotional the main characters are nearly invincible and you can't die from beeing shoot when you are inportant for the plot. Dangerous injuries like a shot near the heart can be treaten after taking a nap. Also we don't really get to know phenix background and as soon as he opens his mouth, the dynamic between the MC's gets, as mentioned, boring and replacable. There is no character delevopment. Pheonix is an asshole with issues at the beginning and at the end while Laura is the innocent princess at the beginning and at the end. It feels very flat. The last thing which is strage, is how bad phoenix destroys evidence. At the first mention he was professional, at the second he almost burned himself down and at the thrid, he left a stack of dead bodys behind while there is the chance of Massimo surviening the fire on his feet. Yeah, he got shot and hung on a hook, but he was shot in the abdomen and lived long enough to listen to phenix generic villain/hero speech while having a hook in the breast. I would't be surprised, if he survived everything of this acording to the unrealistic amount of blood they have in this book. The characters also just random know or have things, when it comes in handy. Food? Oh, lets go shopping and risk everything. Paralizing siringes? A Knive would have done the trick, but they just appeard, so lets use them. The book is not really the worst thing to exist, it at least follows his own rules and shows constancy in not being realistic. The smut was okay to good but nothing never seen bevore.

So I absolutely loved Burn for me. This book some of my favorite tropes in it like the obsessive MMC, captor/captive, I would consider this possibly enemies to lovers or haters to lovers because our FMC generally does hate the MMC for a good chunk of the book! I would consider this book also a slow burn. We don’t really get into like any major spice until like chapter 30 and I think there’s 47 chapters in the book. now that being said there is a lot of tension between our two main characters and I mean a lot Laura is trying to figure out whether she actually wants to be with Phoenix while trying to also hate him at the same time while Phoenix says I just want to be with you and make you completely mine. Quick little synopsis of the book is our FMC is Laura. She is part of this kind of wealthy family and she was arranged to be married. Turns out some things have happened and now her family is gone and she’s being held captive by, MMC Phoenix, who kind of works as the person you called to get rid of crime scenes. He goes and burns down things revolving around crime. And once he sees her, he knows that he is completely obsessed with her and wants to have her but the thing is that she does not wanna be around him because her family is now gone. She’s being held captive and she doesn’t want anything to do with him. But that doesn’t stop Phoenix from trying. Just again to preference this is a dark romance. This is a captor/captive story so please look at your trigger warnings! This book is out on audio today is performed in duet style by Francesca Peregrine & William Macleod. It is a blue nose, audio production and is written by Effie Campbell.

Wow. I wasn't expecting any of that. An arsonist cleaner, Phoenix, finds one of his clean up jobs still alive, Laura, so he decides to keep her. Because why not? Phoenix's story as it unfolds is tragic, so you want him to have someone. The fact that he is Laura's captor and savior proves to be confusing for Laura but intriguing for the dark romance reader.

There are a couple of seriously ick moments in this book. I'm not saying it was a trigger for me, but I was giving the scene some heavy side eye. And there was a flare gun. If you've read the McGowan Mafia books, you know Effie has a very creative mind when it comes to incentivized questioning and unaliving. This book is no different.

All that and I still really enjoyed the story. Phoenix broke my heart. I wanted to wrap him up and hug him (leading to other things), so the moment Laura truly looked at him, made me so happy. They have each struggled with life, and I liked watching them heel through this crazy, unhinged relationship. Effie just knows how to write a great, engaging story with a strong HEA.

Believe it or not, this was a cute story (in the dark romance universe).
The author has great writing skills, amazing way of describing the characters and the situations. I absolutely like her English. Yes, she has this funny disclaimer in which she informs us that she uses British English, but for a person who isn't a native, I found it easy to read. Yes, I learned some new words, but it wasn't a biggie.

I absolutely didn't like the FMC in the beginning, and even afterwards.
I couldn't empathize with her and her stupidity. Pardon...this is what she made me feel. But then, as the story unfolded, I started to see her progress in becoming a better person. Very spicy and spunky and crazy FMC, a true fighter! Until the end, in my books, the FMC and me were friends.

The MMC is a true teddy bear, honestly. And that's the only thing I am going to say.
Yes it's dark romance, yes they're a bit coocoo, they meet in "hot" circumstances, yes it doesn't start as a cute "meet-cute", but hey read the trigger warnings from the beginning of the book before starting it.

This is a heat filled romantic suspense book with dark themes. The content, both on and off page, will NOT be suitable for everyone. It covers topics that may be triggering. You MUST proceed with caution.

This was an emotional, angsty read… prepare for some strong emotions and quite possibly tears.

I’ve been looking forward to Phoenix’s story after catching a glimpse of him in Alfie, Darling; and Effie does not disappoint. Phoenix is everything you could imagine and more. A mute, morally grey, masked powerhouse with a penchant for fire… YUM MEE!

I have to admit, having the same name as the FMC made this even more exciting. Every time I read her name, it gave me little goosebumps.

This was forced proximity with enemies to lovers/hate to love in all its glory; the level of hate and angst made for a very interesting read indeed. The constant push and pull was brilliantly written. It kept you on your toes throughout as Laura has a willpower of steel; it was touch and go if she was going to give in to her inner desires. Phoenix was beyond obsessed and never gave up, he knew she was always meant to be his.

Phoenix’s love for Laura knows no bounds, the lengths he will and does go to are out of this world. He is utterly obsessed and will do anything to protect and love her. His journey to win her heart was both sweet and comical, his inner monologue thoughts were great.
Laura was strong, maybe slightly naive in the beginning but she comes into her own throughout the read. They were the perfect match for each other and the chemistry was banging. Effie is the master at writing sizzling, schmexy scenes.

I adored the body insecurity/disfiguration elements of this read, it truly showed that everyone deserves to be loved for who they are, not what they look like. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

This was a slower burn compared to some of Effie’s other work but this was more emotionally intense. It was dark and complex with great character growth and development.

She did it again, and I'm honestly not surprised. Effie has a way of pulling you so deep into a story that you feel like you're really living it.

I fell head over heal for pheonix (the MMC), I can honestly say this is the first Effie Campbell Book that has brought me to tears. The pain and complete suffering that pheonix went through... heartbreaking.

The chemistry between Phoenix & Laura was a little rocky at first (probably for good reason 😅), I honestly didn't know if I was going to like Laura. She just seemed to ... winey, BUT she did grow on me!

Effie really knows how to write characters (especially the MMCs) that you can't help but fall in love with. The ones that would burn it all down for you. This was definitely another win!

I have been looking forward to Phoenix’s story for a while and I am so happy it is finally here!!
What we know:
-Phoenix is a badass arsonist for the underworld
-He is mute
-He definitely has some issues that lead him to his current occupation
-He is a tree trunk of a man
What I will tell you:
-He lives on his boat and in a cabin on his on personal island
-While on a job, he takes something that was never intended to leave the site.
-His whole life changes from his theft in ways he never imagined both good and bad
-He is going to have some explaining to do at the end of all this
How I feel about it:
-I loved everything about this story. The growth we see Phoenix go through is staggering and just makes my heart swell. He may be the man who helps criminals cover up their crimes, but he is such a sweet, gentle giant.
I can’t wait to read more of his story. With the way the book ended, I have no doubt we will be seeing more of him.

I loved this. Every second of reading it. Laura and Phoenix were made for each other. Their story is one I have been so excited to read since it was announced months ago. And it didn’t disappoint. The hot and coldness of both of them had me reeling to know what was going to happen. The spíce level was hot. Every scene had me squirming in my seat. The writing style was amazing. As someone who works on boats for a living I so appreciated how correct everything was. Effie Campbell did a phenomenal job writing this. I will say, i’ll never look at smoke flares the same way again though;). There’s just something about Effie’s books that just hook you in and you’re stuck till you find out the next thing that happens. There are quite a few TW’s to read first, otherwise I highly recommend!!

Burn for Me is now one of my favorites from Effie. I have been looking forward to Phoenix’s story. If you’ve read some of her other books, then you will recognize some familiar characters. Laura and Phoenix are just wow. Forced proximity and a masked man 🔥🥵🥵 All it took was one look at Laura and Phoenix was obsessed. After being hired to destroy a crime scene, Phoenix takes his obsession. It takes Laura a little longer to warm to the idea but once she does 😮‍💨. Effie definitely teases us a little before the spicy scenes hit but once they do…..omggg. Now they just have to escape the man who wants them both dead. This book had me hooked! It’s definitely a must read, especially if you’re a fan of forced proximity.

surprisingly sweet

To have such a contrast between dark sad topics to have them wrapped up in the sweet overwhelming love. I was not expecting to love this book as much as I did. I know it’s a short read and I thought it would be a nice quick read and I would move on but I definitely think this would be a re read. It was spicy, sexy and sweet. The end when she gave him his gift brought literal tears into my eyes. It was such a beautiful unexpected moment in the book and I think it pushed the book from a 4 star book to a 5 star book. There’s nothing I’ve read like this before. I’m obsessed

My girl has done it again. This book is a short and fast read, but you are sucked in from the beginning. I love how the McGowan’s make an appearance in this story. Phoenix was haunted by his past and didn’t plan on falling in love with Laura. Laura came from horrible family and was kidnapped/helped by Phoenix. She hated him for taking her away but that hate grew into love. I got emotional in this book at the scene of Phoenix in the bathroom. This book was perfection and I loved reading every minute of it. Thank you Effie for more of your wonderfulness.

This was very mindful (angsty!!!), very demure (tension 🔥).


These two are complete opposites, but the pull of attraction could be cut with a knife.

I’ve never read a book about a professional arsonist for hire, them flames were HAWT. 👀 IYKYK.


If my fiancé hired a man to come cover up my shmurder, I’d be just as resentful as angry, just saying. 🫢

Laure definitely did not have it easy, and temptation is hard to resist, in the face of her savior/captor.

Are you looking for a book that’s all about revenge with a lot of spice? Then Burn For Me is the book to read.

Effie is always taking her stories to another level and this one is just the same. Phoenix is unhinged and will do anything to help Laura bring down the POS that harmed her. And all the things we find out about why Phoenix is the way he is had me wanting to even be there for him also.

This is such a good read and make sure you check those TW before reading.

I needed a break from the never ending TBR full of series so gave this a go. Quick read but loved the substance the characters had.

If you’re into dark romance/mafia romance it’s a good read! He adores her and she learns to love her kidnapper.

I am a big fan of the ending. Did sort of leave room for a sequel if the author decided to do one but also not absolutely necessary.

This was such a good in-between book. Great plot, good steamy scenes and nice tension and spicy. The slowburn worked considerably well even though this is a shorter book. I loved how obsessed yet sweet and gentle Phoenix was with Laura. Loved that there was no 3/4 break up and the pacing of the book flows pretty nicely as well.

So this is actually is insane, I have so much to say about this thing. I came across this book from the author’s post on instagram and the idea of the book sounded great to me so I decided to read it. The beginning was fine, the fmc was stupid but I said whatever, what’s new I’ll continue reading it I kinda like the idea that the mmc has his mouth shut forever.
It had potential, stockholm syndrome, silent traumatized hot crazy mmc, rich girl that her fiancé murder her parents in front of her. Great stuff. And I kinda enjoyed it? Until she literally burn his house down. Keep in mind that he is a burn victim.
She woke up and decided that she is burning his house.

Anyway, read that, said whatever and continued but then, instead of him being mad at her for literally BURNING HIS HOUSE. What did he do?
He fucked her.
What do you mean?????
Anyway after doing the devil’s tango she completely forgot that she hates him, burned her dead family and kidnapped her. I guess the d was that good that it rearranged her entire brain.
But fine, read that, said whatever, kept going.
But then.
THEN.
Let me tell you, I was shook.
He cut his nonexistent, burn scared lips, by himself, in the bathroom, with a razor, so he could taste her.
I’m sorry, WHAT?????
I get the idea I get the gesture but I actually don’t? Like who does that???? Who writes it????
Then going to her completely covered in blood with his new lips and going down on her???? The infection??????? Hello????????
I refused to keep reading the book after this part because in no way in hell I will be spending one more minute of my precious time on this thing. Nothing makes sense.
