Surviving Monday might be the biggest accomplishment of their lives.

By 9:03 A.M. Monday, bank manager Indie Chase thinks her day can’t get worse. She’s dealt with spills, an ex-husband, and her preschooler on bank time.
She’s wrong, though.
In a matter of moments, that day becomes the stuff of nightmares.

Dax Reed is a reluctantly retired pro hockey player with a past he’d rather forget. He’s well on his way to doing so, on his way to Hawaii for a well-deserved vacation, when everything goes to hell.

Together, they’re caught in a robbery that’s going to take everything they have to survive.
It’s going to take trust.
It’s going to take strength.

It might even take … each other.

There was not a single thing I liked about this book (: The insta love was not it and the being able to communicate without opening their mouths as soon as they met also was not it. I forced myself to finish this just so it counted towards my goal!! ⭐️

Underwhelming

Spoilers ahead!!

This is the story of Dax and Indigo. They meet during a bank heist and go through quite an ordeal together. Someone is killed and the other hostages are threatened and injured. During all this they form a connection. They can "speak" to each other by just sharing a look. I've been with my husband for 13 years and when I look at him too hard he always just assumes he's got something stuck in his teeth. I just felt like the author's used this excuse several times rather than allowing the characters to have an actual conversation. It frustrated me. I get that they are hostages and it's not a coffee date but that trend continued for quite some time. Instead of having meaningful conversations they would have sex or have inner dialogue that would bore me to tears. So Dax promises that they will get out alive and that they will go to Hawaii together. Indie is hopeful and that becomes her motivation to survive. Well, Dax disappears and is presumed dead. Indigo is rescued but is finding it impossible to move on. She's heartbroken because she wanted Dax to take her to Hawaii to see the sailboats. I could not understand that kind of devotion after such a short time. Yes, they went through a trauma but it felt contrived to me. She made it more than it was. So Dax is gone but turns out he gets himself into a situation and becomes a victim again. I won't go into that but he gets free and decides to dissappear for real. He allows his family to think he is dead. His friends , minus one trusted pal, and fans all thing he's dead. Nope, he's alive and moves to a cabin in the middle of nowhere to live like a mountain man hermit. He let's this woman, who he can have conversations with just by an intense look, think he's dead. What kind of person can do that!?! Seriously. How selfish can this guy be? It was seriously off-putting. He put these people through torture but it's justified because he survived a trauma. Oh brother. Of course, Indigo is a little mad but gets over it fairly quickly. I feel like I got more angry at my partner for eating all the pickles and putting the empty jar back in the fridge than Indie at Dax here. So she finds out he's alive and they start dating. Have I mentioned she has a 4 year old named Daisy? Who was also in the bank and formed a bond with Dax and stopped speaking when he died. Again, Indie let's that slide. You find out why Dax is so broken by what happened during the second kidnapping but I still didn't think it was a good excuse for the fake death stuff. So they start a relationship and continue with their intense looks. I started to get a little bored and kept hoping the book would end soon. Their are some side characters that are sometimes more compelling than the main characters. I liked Blake more than Dax. The ending was underwhelming and not even worth getting into. The Great Gatsby kept being brought up throughout hence why Indigo named her daughter Daisy. Daisy Buchanan is one of the most vapid literary characters of all time. She killed 3 people and surrounded herself with jerks. Was Dax supposed to be similar to Daisy here? Was this being brought up to make the romance more intense? I just didn't get it. I really didn't like this book. The writing isn't bad but the story just felt more disenchanted than romantic to me. I'm giving it 3 stars but I don't think I could ever read this book again. I just needed more.

I just finished this spellbinding story and i really don't know what to do with myself now.
Riveting, visceral and unexpected story line had me addicted from the get go. It's hyper charged emotional content just fascinated me, so much so that I had to read it in one sitting.
Could Not Put The Book Down!!
I went through every emotion possible, from heartache to promise, optimistic hope to miserable torment.. What an experience this book turned out to be. I've NEVER read a book like this before!
The Author is a phenomenon in making. Mark my words, she's an author to watch out for. A genius of epic proportions, Her books always slay me and entropy is another tragic-romance that every needs to read.

"Entropy signifies a state of disorder or chaos. A measure of uncertainty.
Have you ever experienced profound chaos? A downward spiral. True, blinding madness that keeps on spinning, plummeting you further and further into a black hole you can’t seem to claw your way out of. It infiltrates everything. "

the writers teem up to create a tragic scenario, right in chapter 1. The repurcussions of which start to spread out in Ripple Effect and ALL the characters are caught in its wake immediately or undertow later.
Trauma is a MoFo Beast, and Grief it's offspring.

"Grief is a senseless Beast

All the characters bear the brunt of the huge incident that starts the book. Some hurt, some bleed, some are shocked speechless. Dax Reed dons his cape to help people in need. The reluctant hero manages to carry the burden of others but his own ultimately becomes too heavy to bear.
He gets tied up by circumstances and though he survives, his soul does not. Taking solace in the anonymity, he embarks on a mission to burrow deep into hiding, maybe to find the elusive peace.

"Peaceful. It’s a carefully crafted lie. Even out here in the dense forests, all alone and surrounded by quiet, my heart is restless. My skin crawls with unease. My mind races with doubt.
If I can’t find peace here, of all places, where else is it? "

Indigo Blue is her companion in tragedy and a shining example of accepting her fault and seeking help. She's Drowning but instead of giving up, she spreads her hand out to anchor with professional help
It takes a village of unsung heroes to form the supportive bracket these characters can lean on.
Blake, the delightful, every loyal "Tart Tangerine" lover, Bunny cuddler's staunch friendship keeps Dax somewhat sane.
Indie's mother, Tameka are all heroes, lending unconditional support to Daisy and indie.
The book ends on a high note of renewal, redemption and recuperation

"Just because some of my pieces are lost, doesn’t mean I’m beyond repair. I’m here, still standing amidst the chaos. "

Some scenes had me tearing up in agony and disbelief. The Dax-Dad scene towards the end was a much needed catharsis. i cried during that scene so much, my own loss blending with theirs. That's how close i came to these characters.

"It ached later, like a phantom limb post-amputation. I wanted to itch it, to tear at it, rip it from my body—only, it had already been ripped away. It wasn’t there. "

The entire book is a journey you ebb and flow on currents of pain and misery. But there's hope and healing at the end. Too many epiphanies, pearls of wisdom, life lessons scattered on every page. I felt spoiled for choice when it came to choosing my favorite passage.
I'm forcing everyone I know to buy and read this book. Hope I get Paperback of it one day

This started off great with the H and h trapped in a bank robbery situation. However, it lost intensity after the robbery and became kinda tame. I didnt really get Dax's decision to disppear, and there was too much of a focus on his personal journey.

If you've never tried Jennifer Hartmann, I'd advise you to avoid this one. Read Still Beating and The Wrong Heart instead.

2.5 ⭐️ i really loved the last book jennifer co-wrote with someone but this one just didn’t do it for me. i loved the first 40% and the plot wasn’t something i’ve ever read before but from there on out i just didn’t like the direction this book was taking.

As always a wonderful book from Jennifer Hartmann, this one is co-written. It’s a beautiful and heartbreaking story of two people whose entire lives are changed in a single day. They have new challenges and traumas to overcome as well as previous traumas they need to let go of. I definitely recommend everyone give this book a go

3.25 stars. This was action from the very beginning of the book. It was suspenseful?, thrilling, sad and so much more. I definitely enjoyed the story and overall emotions that the characters were facing regarding their shared trauma.

I'm pretty disappointed with this one. It was more like a bad 80's heist movie. I could not take it seriously. Definitely my least favorite Jennifer Hartmann so far.

2.5 stars — The one that just didn’t click.

Okay… confession time: I adore Jennifer Hartmann. I’ve raved, sobbed, and spiraled through nearly every single one of her emotionally gut-wrenching masterpieces. But Entropy? This one left me on the outside looking in, wondering if I’d accidentally picked up someone else’s book.

I kept waiting for that signature Hartmann gut-punch—the raw vulnerability, the quiet devastation wrapped in prose so poetic it makes your soul ache. But this one just… didn’t hit. I felt nothing. Which is honestly wild, considering this is an author who once made me cry over a fictional voicemail. Twice.

The characters never fully came alive for me. Their pain, while clearly there on the page, felt distant—like I was being told they were suffering instead of truly feeling it alongside them. The connection, the chemistry, the emotional pull… all of it just felt muted. And it didn’t help that the pacing dragged in places, making it hard to stay invested in their journey.

And hey, not every book is going to resonate with every reader, even when it’s by an author you normally worship like a bookish deity. I wanted to connect, I tried to connect—but by the end, I was more relieved to be done than emotionally wrecked. And if you know Hartmann, that’s saying something.

Final verdict: I’ll chalk it up to entropy in the reading universe. It happens. Still love Jennifer Hartmann with my whole heart… just not this one.

I enjoyed the first half of the story. Then things jumped ahead eight months and that was when everything went downhill. The story slowed and began to drag. Some events seemed unlikely and/or were never resolved: Nothing about the characters stood out to me. I was really bummed about this because I've enjoyed all the other Jennifer Hartmann books I've read.

If you're interested in a romance that starts with a bank robbery, I recommend Unbreakable by Emma Scott. It isn't a dark romance but it is very well written; the plot after the robbery is every bit as engaging as it was during the robbery.

As soon as I read the blurb, I had to have this book - plus I loved 'Still Beating' - so I was expecting a dark, suspenseful read. It started out quite good - a solid 4 stars. Then in the middle of the robbery, our H/h were having a normal conversation, which I thought was strange, as it took me out of the seriousness of the situation they were in. The tension of the morning therefore got pulled down a few pegs. A few minutes later the dramatics of the story charged up again, which was good, then everything changed. Time lines were flung forward (trying not to spoil too much) and I was astounded. I was expecting dark and dangerous and a roller coaster ride with the bad guys, then the story went in a completely different direction. Women's fiction anyone...? Sorry, but by half way through I was bored and started skimming. There was no problem with the actual writing - it was well done.

4.5/5

My only true issue with this book was when Indie forgave Dax at his cabin like it was NO BIG DEAL that he was hiding and pretending to be dead for eight months. That really irritated me, but other than that- this book hooked me instantly and kept me curious. Jennifer Hartmann does it again and makes a beautiful story out of a tragic situation, she has a habit of doing that.

This book is just amazing and is a true 5 Star+ Must Read!!!

This book was so much more than I could have imagined from the little sneak peeks or teasers and it is hands down my favorite book so far.

This story takes you through a gamut of emotions and consumes you until the very end. You watch as Indie and Dax unfortunately meet under the worst circumstances but brave the uncertainties of what is thrown at them in a dire situation.

I felt every emotion that this characters felt deep in my bones when they are put inside the worst nightmare of a bank robbery gone wrong. These authors gave me chills and had me with fear induced panic at times with the situation these characters faced. I also had a few laughs out of this seriously emotional story though from the best side character ever Blake. This story was full of dark emotions but has a few lighthearted moments mixed in to give you a break from all the torment these characters faced. It's heartbreaking at times and full some hot and steamy moments also. Like I said this story was pure perfection with everything you need as a reader.

If you're looking for a book with an emotional punch and steamy moments mixed into the storyline make sure to grab this book it's one of the best. I highly recommend this book for any reader because it is one you cant put down and don't want to end! Five star and more if I could give on this one!

It was almost going to be 2⭐️ but Daisy really carried the book for me. I love cute kids in books.

While the bank robbery was happening I couldn’t wait to see them outside that setting. Once I did I wished they were back in that bank 🙈 Dax had so much potential until he did what he did and well… yeah. 9 months??? You let this woman think she would never see you again for 9 freaking months?!? It’s just something that’s hard to forgive. How can you be in a relationship with him after that? If roles were reversed I would have felt the same way about her. From about 60% to like 85% I just didn’t care. I didn’t care about Dax. I didn’t care about Indie. I just wanted to see if Daisy spoke again. If it wasn’t for the audiobook I would have DNF’d it. The moment Dax showed up and Daisy started crying and went right to him 😭THAT is what had me continuing listening. Daisy experienced so much awfulness and the way she went to this man who was practically a stranger had me in tears. He was there for her during the robbery and she knew he was a safe place 😭 when Daisy started talking I got so happy. The ending was sweet. I just never felt their connection. It felt like a trauma bond and that’s it. They went through something horrible together and couldn’t imagine life without one another. Oh and for the record, Indie might have married this man but I’m still pissed off at him.

“Entropy signifies a state of disorder or chaos. A measure of uncertainty. How’s that for a fancy definition? I bet you never even heard of that word before.”

Indie thought her Monday would the same as normal, juggling her preschooler and ex-husband to get out the door on time. What she didn’t see coming was her biggest nightmare.

Dax is a retired hockey star with a past he’d like to erase. Hawaii in sight, he on his way to freedom. When it all goes to hell.

Indie and Dad love though the scariest day of their lover together. The bank gets held up and they have to do anything and everything to survive. But surviving is one thing, what comes next needs everything!

This was a shot but packed with a punch novel. It follows both Indie and Dax and how they navigate the after. It’s not easy and it gets a little complicated. But I’m the end they are right where they need to be.

Sadly my final hartmann novel until she releases something new. I’ve loved every moment since of reading her backlist

Hartman never dissapoints.

This is a story of how tragedy can change the course of who you are. The characters are forced into trauma, healing and figuring how to love which is messy and raw. Loved the gay best friend who adds humor and the little girl tugs at your heart strings. This a beautiful story of redemption, and forgiveness.

“Only entropy comes easy, we need to fight hard for all the rest.” -Dax aka the Hockey guy aka our hero

This story could have been broken up into 3 parts—

Part 1: chaos and tragedy
Part 2: sadness and brokenness
Part 3: healing and peace

Man, Jennifer Hartmann really loves a good kidnapping and major PTSD! This book didn’t draw me in like some of her others which was disappointing because I wanted to love it. Overall, it was entertaining enough to finish, but I wouldn’t recommend it to a friend.
