Hi, I'm Paul Teague (writing as Paul J. Teague), the author of the Don't Tell Meg trilogy, the Morecambe Bay series of books as well as several other standalone psychological thrillers such as Dead of Night, So Many Lies and Now You See Her.
I'm a former broadcaster and journalist with the BBC, but I have also worked as a primary school teacher, a disc jockey, a shopkeeper, a waiter and a sales rep.
I've read thrillers all my life, starting with Enid Blyton's Famous Five series, then graduating to James Hadley Chase, Harlan Coben, Linwood Barclay and Mark Edwards.
If you love those authors then you’ll like my thrillers too.
I started off writing thrillers with the Don’t Tell Meg Trilogy which draws upon my 18 year career in radio journalism.
It’s fast-moving, high action and a bit racy in places, but it was great fun writing the story and I hope to re-visit the characters one day.
My standalones are ‘can’t-put-down’ stories where normal people find themselves in extradordinary situations.
I also write sci-fi and dystopian novels as Paul Teague and these stories are set in dark and sinister future-worlds.
I have written The Secret Bunker Trilogy, The Grid Trilogy and the stanadlone story, Phase 6.

My Thoughts /
First and foremost, a huge THANK YOU to NetGalley, Storm Publishing, and author Paul J. Teague, for providing me with a copy of this publication, which allows me to provide you with an unbiased review. Publication date is currently set for November 08, 2024.
🎡Cover Appreciation Mention🎡 Before I start, I feel the need to take a brief pause to admire the cover art 😍😍😍……and….now you can continue.
Her Final Secret is the fifth instalment of the Detective Hollie Turner series by author, Paul Teague.
Written with a dual timeline, we follow DS Turner, as she is faced with confronting some painful memories in her past, while investigating a current case – the murder of a retired police superintendent.
Then: Hull Fair, October 1999. Twenty-five years ago, Hollie and her best friend from university, Moira, were enjoying the festivities, foods and fairground attractions at the annual Hull Fair. The pair got separated in the crowd and, while Hollie scoured the Fairgrounds for her friend, Moira, it seemed, had just disappeared without a trace.
Now: Present Day. DS Turner and her team are called to an incident where the body of retired police superintendent Gordon Carrick was found hidden in an amusement park ride at the annual Hull Fair, situated near the body was a sign which read: Your turn to die. Coincidence?? Or was it intentionally placed??
As Turner and her team begin their investigation, buried memories and secrets Hollie had compartmentalised and boxed away begin to push their way to the surface. The fairground; Moira; and now, Gordon Carrick; is it all connected somehow?
🎡Fairground Cheers🎡
🎡Characters: Teague has written a strong, intelligent protagonist, who, even though was obviously fighting with her own past personal experiences in this story, the reader couldn’t help but cheer for her to succeed.
🎡Alternating chapter timelines where the reader is gifted with more detail of Moira’s disappearance each time. As the two threads continue, more and more connections are made; until the final curtain call reveal at the end.
🎡Plot and Pace are equally absorbing. Teague’s writing is clear and concise. Both plot threads are compelling and the two become so enmeshed it’s difficult for the reader to differentiate them as two separate cases, which makes for captivating reading.
With unique and different place settings and unmatched storylines it’s easy to see why this series is quickly becoming one of my favourite reads.
With thanks to NetGalley and especially to Storm Publishing for the much appreciated arc in return for an honest review. All opinions expressed in this review are my own. The publication date is currently set for November 08, 2024.
In 1999, Hollie’s best friend vanished. That’s why Hollie became a detective because she didn’t like how her friend’s investigation was handled. Now Hollie has a murder to investigate that seems to have ties with the past. As the story continues we get glimpses of the past and how it all connects to Hollie’s current case. Another fast paced story and I really liked seeing how/why Hollie became a detective. I enjoy Teague’s writing and these characters that he has created. I hope there will be more in this series.
This is a great crime thriller. When a retired Policeman is found murdered at Hull Fair, Detective Hollie Turner is forced to confront an event from her past. Twenty five years earlier, her friend Moira vanished without a trace at that very same fairground, and memories from that time flood to the surface. Soon the investigation takes a more sinister turn with historical abuse allegations at a local children's home, and this links to Moira. Hollie has her hands full trying to solve the recent murder and also tries desperately to find out what really happened to her best friend. Thanks to Storm Publishing for the opportunity to read this book.
The annual Hull Fair is always a traumatic time for DI Hollie Turner. A quarter of a century earlier, when they were both students, she and her best friend were enjoying an evening on the rides when Moira disappeared. Now, the body of an ex-cop has been discovered in the same area, and, like it or not, Hollie's memories are returning to the surface as she and her team find links between the two cases. As her previous involvement in Moira's disappearance becomes common knowledge, the danger increases, and Hollie is determined the sins of the past won't become the failures of the present day.
Book five in this series is a very enjoyable read. The pressure of the case is obvious throughout, and I felt the need to read faster and faster even though I also knew how daft that was! Hollie is an interesting main protagonist, and her regrets about the past will still be there in future outings, I think.
I was able to read an advanced copy of this thanks to NetGalley and the publishers, Storm Publishing, but the opinions expressed are my own. I enjoyed this very much and happily recommend it.
This book takes us on another journey with the absolute baddie, Hollie Turner. We get a glimpse into Hollie's past and the incident that steered her towards her career with the police. Jumping between 1999 and present day an unforgettable, heartbreaking, thrilling, suspenseful story unfolds. It's good, and I mean REALLY good.
Mr. Teague has quickly become one of my favourite authors. His characters have depth, settings are detailed, storylines are unmatched and his writing style is perfection. Looking forward to seeing where Hollie and the team end up next!
Her Final Secret is a gripping British police procedural that follows detective Hollie Turner as she tackles a case that stirs up dark memories from her past. The story opens with the murder of a retired police superintendent at Hull Fair, a chilling crime that hits close to home for Hollie. Twenty-five years earlier, her best friend Moira vanished without a trace at the same fair. As Hollie digs deeper, she uncovers a tangled web of secrets involving historical abuse, a mysterious care home, and the suspicious death of a former care worker.
This book marked my first encounter with Paul J. Teague's work, and I didn't realize it was part of a series featuring detective Hollie Turner. Fortunately, it can be read as a standalone, as the narrative provides enough background for new readers to immerse themselves.
The cover is strikingly atmospheric, and its eerie aesthetic was a major draw for me. It perfectly complements the suspenseful tone of the story. The setting of Hull Fair adds a creepy, almost cinematic backdrop that enhances the tension, especially as the narrative alternates between the present investigation and flashbacks to Moira's disappearance. This dual timeline keeps the reader engaged and offers insights into Hollie's character and motivations.
Hollie Turner herself is a highlight. She's a compelling protagonist with a strong emotional arc. Her determination to solve the case and seek justice for Moira makes her an easy character to root for.
That said, the book fell a little short of my expectations. While I enjoy British crime novels, the pacing here was slower than I prefer, and some of the twists were predictable. I kept waiting for a shocking revelation or a jaw-dropping moment, but those never came.
Overall, Her Final Secret is a solid mystery with an intriguing premise, a likeable lead, and an unsettling atmosphere. If you're a fan of police procedurals and don't mind a steadier pace, this might be a good fit. However, if you're looking for a fast-paced thriller with unpredictable twists, this one might feel a bit tame.
Many thanks to NetGalley and Storm Publishing for providing me with a digital copy in exchange for my honest review.
Detective Hollie Turner is working on a case that has unfortunate similarities to an event in her. Hollie Turner and Moira Kennedy were 19 year old University students, who were attending the Hull Fair in 1999 when their night takes a horrific turn. In an instant Moire is gone. Hollie tirelessly tries to find her friend but with no leads, the case soon goes cold. Unable to cope with the tragedy, Hollie drops out of school and pursues a career in law enforcement. Now, 25 years later, a body has been found at the same location and she can’t help but worry there might be a connection. The deeper the investigation goes, the more she realizes that unfortunately, she was right. Another body is found, and the connection is made that the victims were involved with a children’s home in the past. The same children’s home that Moira lived in.
This is another great book in this Detective Hollie Turner series, and I like Hollie’s flashbacks showing how she decided to join the force because of Moira’s disappearance and the lack of movement on the case after time passed. It’s not at all surprising that she’d want to do a better job for other people than the police did for her when her friend went missing. The way she was treated was horrible. If only that behavior wasn’t so true to life.
This book, like the others in the series was such an attention grabber. I needed to find out what happened next and continued to read. It is fast paced and heart pounding. It was great with the dual timelines from the 1999-present. Paul Teague does an incredible job of keeping the mystery flowing throughout the book.
Thank you to @netgalley, @stormbooks_co and @paulteagueauthor for granting me the ARC of Her Final Secret.
A gripping physiological thriller that was hard to put down!!
In this gripping thriller, Detective Hollie Turner is drawn into a case that hits disturbingly close to home. When a retired police superintendent is found murdered at Hull Fair, Hollie is forced to confront her own painful past. Twenty-five years earlier, her university friend Moira vanished without a trace at that very same fairground, and now, as Hollie delves deeper into the superintendent's death, buried secrets from that tragic night begin to resurface.
The story expertly intertwines a potential link to historical abuse allegations at a local children's home and the suspicious death of a former care worker, making the stakes even higher. The tension mounts as Hollie unravels a web of lies, cover-ups, and decades-old conspiracies. Can she finally uncover the chilling truth about what really happened to Moira?
This novel is an intense, well-crafted mystery that keeps you on edge, with twists that will leave you questioning everything. If you love dark, suspenseful stories with complex characters and a deep emotional core, this is a must-read!
I was lucky enough to be gifted an Arc copy thanks to NetGalley.
Her Final Secret by Paul Teague is his fifth book in the Detective Hollie Turner series. Hollie Turner is estranged from her husband Leon following an extramarital affair on his part; their 2 young children Noah and Lily are living with Leon. Hollie is called to the Hull Fairgrounds to investigate the brutal death of former Police Superintendent Gordon Carrick; ironically 25 years ago Hollie's best friend Moira Kennedy went missing at the fair- never to be seen again. Hollie never got over what happened to Moira despite the fact that it became a Cold Case years ago; it certainly impacted her decision to join the police force. Carrick's death raises old memories, and as information about the former superintendent emerges, Hollie begins to think the cases may be related. The book is told from her perspective of the 1999 events and the current investigation. I found it to be an intriguing storyline; at times it seemed just a bit slow to me, however overall a very good read. Thanks to NetGalley, Storm Publishing and Paul J.Teague for the opportunity to read an ARC of Her Final Secret; this review reflects my honest opinion. 4 stars.

Teague. This is the fifth book I have read by this author and I have loved every one of them! His books are the best unputdownable thriller books ever!
Her Final Secret is written in a dual timeline, we follow Detective Hollie Turner as she investigates a case that brings back haunting memories in her past when her best friend, Moira disappeared without a trace. Now present day Hollie is called to investigate a similar case, is it all connected somehow?
This is a very fast paced, unforgettable, heartbreaking, thrilling and suspenseful story. Definitely one of my favorites!
Many many thanks to #HerFinalSecret #NetGalley and #StormPublishing for providing me with an E-ARC of this 5 star book!

My opinion: I just finished this book and I thoroughly enjoyed it! From the first page, it had my attention. I finished it within 24 because it was so fast paced, I could not put it down. My heart broke for Hollie as she struggled and lived with the loss of her best friend. I loved the dual timelines and being able to experience their lives in 1999. Paul Teague did an incredible job pacing the mystery throughout and I was guessing right until the end. This will not be my last Teague book!
Also, this book is set in England so it is British style writing/wording - for my American readers, it actually made the book more memorable for me.

I loved the last three books, so I was extremely excited when I saw book 4 in this series had been released. Detective Holly Turner finds her new case begins to haunt Holly as she is sure that the murder at the Hull Fair of her late superintendent could be related to that of her friend Moira who disappeared twenty-five years ago. Holly has kept this secret since Moira died and buried it deep inside her but never forgot her dear friend and Holly admits it was also one of the reasons, she joined the police force to help bring justice to the victims. Holly was also the last person with Moira before she vanished twenty-five years ago, and it has always bothered Holly how quick the case was closed. As Holly and her team delve deeper into the case and another body shows up it is too much of a coincidence that both men worked or had something to do with the children’s home were Moira had lived when she was younger.
This is a fast-paced book with plenty of nail-biting moments as we go back in time when Holly was 19 and was at collage with Moira her best friend. We also learn about Hollys oldest daughter her father and Holly pregnancy whist she was still at collage. The book keeps you turning every page as the plot goes deeper and deeper as Holly unravels this case and finds it goes back to Moira's days in the children’s home with some dark and horrible secrets that Moira never shared with Holly. It is great the way the team interact and has great characters that will keep you hooked until the last page. I loved this book and Paul Teague is now becoming one of my favourite authors due to how he can author such excellent books and is an exceptionally talented writer. I feel like I am in Hull with Holly and the team as Teague describes places with such intricate details that you could easily be there in the fair ground and the city. The whole book is so professionally written that you feel your part of the action, and the ending has left me wanting more from Holly and the Team. Thanks to NetGalley and to the publishers of this book for giving me a free advance copy of the book to preview and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Her Final Secret by Paul J Teague is a very highly recommended procedural in which a twenty-five-year-old cold case may provide the clues needed to solve the current case.
Detective Hollie Turner had her university friend Moira vanished 25 years ago at the Hull Fair. The tragedy is what propelled Hollie to leave the university and pursue a career in law enforcement. Now the body of a retired police superintendent is found murdered at Hull Fair and it brings back memories from the past. Hollie never forgot Moira. As she works the current case and another body shows up it becomes clear that the disappearance of Moira and the potential link to abuse allegations at a local children's home a quarter of a century earlier are tied into the present murders.
Chapters in the narrative alternate between events from 1999 and the present day. In 1999 when Moira disappeared at the fair, both she and Hollie were 19 years-old. Hollie never liked the way the disappearance or her account of it was handled by the police. Now, as a Detective Inspector, Hollie is in the position to uncover what happened to her friend if she can solve who is committing the current murders today. With the okay by her superior officers she is allowed to stay on the investigation.
This is a well-written, fast-paced, compelling procedural and will hold your complete attention as the team unravels a web of lies and cover-ups spanning decades. The characters are all realistic and likeable. You will be closely following their investigation and wishing them well. The abuse that occurred at the children's home may be difficult topic for some readers, but it is not graphically explained. Expect several suspects and twists along the way.
Even though this is the 5th in the series, it can be enjoyed as a standalone. 4.5 Thanks to Storm Publishing for providing me with an advance reader's copy via NetGalley. My review is voluntary and expresses my honest opinion. http://www.shetreadssoftly.com/2024/1...
ARC provided by Bookouture in exchange for an honest review.
Paul J. Teague’s Her Final Secret is an intricately layered thriller that pulls readers deep into Detective Hollie Turner’s most personal and challenging case yet. When a retired police superintendent is found murdered at Hull Fair, Hollie is forced to confront a painful chapter of her past. Hull Fair isn’t just any crime scene for Hollie—it’s the last place she saw her friend Moira, who vanished without a trace twenty-five years ago. Now, as Hollie dives into the superintendent’s death, secrets buried for decades begin to resurface, revealing chilling connections she never expected.
Teague masterfully balances suspense and emotion, crafting a narrative that not only delivers edge-of-your-seat moments but also explores Hollie’s personal journey. The author does a fantastic job of showing Hollie’s internal conflict as she navigates the tangled web of lies, cover-ups, and painful truths tied to her past. As her investigation unveils potential links to historic abuse allegations at a children’s home and the suspicious death of a former care worker, the plot thickens into a complex puzzle spanning decades.
The writing is taut and immersive, with Teague’s pacing keeping the tension high. Just when you think you’ve figured it out, the story takes another unexpected turn, making for an unforgettable reading experience. Hollie is portrayed with depth and resilience, her dedication to justice and personal stakes in the case making her a compelling lead throughout the series.
Her Final Secret is a must-read for fans of gritty, character-driven mysteries. Teague has once again proven his skill at crafting a multi-layered thriller that leaves a lasting impact. This latest installment is a testament to his ability to combine suspenseful storytelling with rich emotional depth, making it a worthy addition to the Detective Hollie Turner series.
This book had me gripped from the first page, even though I hadn't read the previous books in the series I found it easy to read as a standalone. DI Hollie Turner knew that her university friend Moira Kennedy's life at the Ambrose House children's home had been rough, twenty five years later she was going to discover just how rough. This story is written over two timelines, 1999 and the present day, it's a format that i'm not usually fond of but in this book it flows well. When Hollie and her team were called to investigate the murder of Gordon Garrick, a former police officer, bizarrely left in the ghost train at the annual Hull Fair, Hollie felt sick, it bore a striking resemblance to the disappearance of her friend Moira at the same fair twenty five years ago, there had never been any sightings of Moira and a body had never been found. Hollie was convinced that the police hadn't taken it seriously, they didn't seem to put any effort into finding Moira and it was this that pushed Hollie into joining the police force. Hollie's gut feeling was telling her that this was more than a coincidence and as the body count began to escalate, Hollie knew that she was working against time, the common denominator to all these deaths was a children's home, the same children's home where Moira had spent her unhappy childhood. This story follows the journey of Hollie and her team as they try to unravel the clues to find the killer and hopefully find her friend, the frustration, fear and anger that Hollie feels is palpable as she fights her own demons. I highly recommend this book, it has nail biting suspense, there are red herrings galore and most important, the characters are well rounded and likeable. Thank you so much to Storm Publishing and Net Gallery for this ARC, this review is totally my own.
This was my second Hollie Turner mystery. I really liked the previous novel "The Killing Circle", and looked forward to reading this one. I was not disappointed!
This time around, Hollie and her team are called to investigate the murder of a retired police superintendent at the Hull Fair. It is a grisly scene at one of the rides at the fair. While at the scene, Hollie is disturbed to find that there is a possibility that this case ties all the way back to her friend from university- Moira. Moira disappeared from the same fair 25 years ago, and Hollie was the last to see her.
This is written with a dual timeline (which I love!). I really love Hollie- she is strong, smart, and vulnerable and the author does a fantastic job of showing all these sides of her. I also love the dynamics between her team members, and seeing how they work well together is nice. I also loved that we get to see what Moira was like, and the effect she had on Hollie's future. It was her disappearance that led Hollie to become a detective.
There is the difficult subject matter of abuse in the story, and it is the center of the plot. I feel the author does a very good job in being respectful about the issue and highlighting it's many affects on all types of victims- but wanted to give that TW.
The story is well paced incredibly well written. I found myself staying up later than I should have to finish! And I absolutely love when the setting becomes a character in the story- a catalyst for the plot! It is a dark tale- but so good. This series is becoming one of my favorites! If you are looking for a bit of a deeper series to sink your teeth into- I highly recommend this!
Huge thank you to NetGalley and Storm Publishing for the ARC. This is my honest and voluntary review.
You know that feeling when you're mindlessly scrolling through your Kindle library at 11 PM, trying to avoid the mounting TBR pile staring at you accusingly? Yeah, that was me last week. Sometimes the best discoveries happen when you're procrastinating – and that ferris wheel cover practically grabbed me by the eyeballs and demanded attention.
Here's the thing about jumping into a series at Book #5: it's either going to work brilliantly or leave you completely lost. Thankfully, Paul J. Teague knows how to write a standalone that doesn't alienate newcomers while still rewarding longtime readers. I had zero background with Detective Hollie Turner, but within chapters I was completely invested in her story.
The dual timeline structure absolutely works here. We bounce between 1999 and the present day, watching nineteen-year-old Hollie experience the trauma that shapes her entire career path. Her friend Moira vanishes at Hull Fair – no body, no answers, just devastating uncertainty. Fast-forward twenty years, and Hollie's back at the same fair, now as a detective investigating a murder that eerily connects to her past.
What hooked me wasn't just the mystery mechanics , but how Paul J. Teague explores the weight of unresolved trauma. Hollie's determination to give other families the closure she never received feels authentic rather than contrived. The Hull Fair setting becomes almost a character itself – that slightly unsettling carnival atmosphere where anything can happen behind the bright lights.
Bottom line: if you're looking for a psychological thriller that respects both its characters and readers, "Her Final Secret" delivers. Sometimes the best finds really are hiding in your digital backlist, waiting for the right midnight scroll session.
Detective Hollie Turner is working on a case that has unfortunate similarities to an event in her past – her best friend Moira went missing at the Hull Fair over two decades ago. Now a body has been found at the same location and she can’t help but worry there might be a connection. The deeper the investigation goes, the more she realizes that unfortunately, she was right. Another body is found and the connection is made that the victims were involved with a children’s home in the past. The same children’s home that Moira lived in.
Hollie doesn’t want to get her hopes up that Moira is still alive, but the possibility exists when the victims are determined to have died from revenge attacks based on the brutality inflicted on the bodies. Hollie knew something was bothering Moira shortly before she vanished, and it would make sense that she could have been part of the abuse they now believe occurred at the home years ago. There were accusations made at the time, but the law decided there was no basis for the claims. But it’s not like there are ever cover-ups or mistakes made, right?
This is another solid entry in this series and I like Hollie’s flashbacks showing how she decided to join the force because of Moira’s disappearance and the lack of movement on the case after time passed. It’s not at all surprising that she’d want to do a better job for other people than the police did for her when her friend went missing. The way she was treated was despicable. If only that behavior wasn’t so true to life.
Detective Hollie Turner returns in book #6 in the series, and this one gets personal.
In 1999, when Hollie was a 19 year old university student, her best friend Moira vanished one night while at the Hull funfair. Moira was never one to talk of her past, but not long before her disappearance, opened up to Hollie about her past in the care system, specifically the childrens home she was brought up in. Those weren't happy days, but she never gave Hollie enough details to be able to help in her disappearance.
25 years later and a body is found at the Hull fair, and Hollie can't help but think there may be a connection. On investigation, they realise the victim was connected to the children's home. Those worries are soon made even more real when another body is found who was also connected to the home.
I really enjoyed the layout of this plot line, with Hollie's flashbacks to her past, it really gelled the story together. It was a story that felt relevant to the way society was in 1999 and then switching to the here and now. It shows just how much can change but also the mistakes and prejudices that are still hanging around decades later.
The pacing throughout was spot on and seriously held my attention. It had me guessing the whole way through. Just when I thought I had it all figured out, I was span in another direction.
Thanks to Netgalley and Storm Publishing for the ARC.
DI Hollie Turner is called out to the discovery of a body on the ghost train at Hull Fair. This brings back awful memories for Hollie. Twenty-five years ago in 1999, Hollie Turner and her friend Moira Kennedy were both 19 years old and at university. They decided to have a fun evening enjoying themselves at Hull Fair. In an awful turn of events, they get separated and Moira ends up disappearing without a trace. Now, 25 years later, the body on the ghost train is identified as Gordon Carrick, an ex-police superintendent. Gordon had a link with a local children’s home, the same home where Moira lived before going to university. Then a care worker at the same home is also found killed, and Hollie realizes there must be a link between the killings and her missing friend. Can Hollie remain impartial while investigating, despite missing her old friend every day. This is a first-class addition to the Detective Hollie Turner series, a proper page-turner and a fast-paced complex story. One of the best additions is seeing Hollie’s earlier life and her motivation for joining the police. The Detective Hollie Turners series continues to grow and mature and is becoming one of my favourite police procedurals. Paul J Teague is adept at these dual-timeline stories. My sincere thanks to NetGalley, Storm Publishing and Paul J Teague for the much-appreciated ARC in exchange for an open and honest review.
4* Solid police procedural, though I'm not sure how Hollie was permitted to remain on the case, given her connection to events from the past.
This is sad and horrifying in parts, as well as satisfying when you read about the awful deaths inflicted on those who frankly deserved what they got. It's a well-orchestrated tale that has more than meets the eye, and the ending was a pretty decent surprise.
I suspect it drew more than a little from child trafficking rings that've made headlines in places such as Rochdale in the not too distant past, but here, most of the guilty paid for it, satisfyingly, an eye for an eye (not PC, I know, but who cares?). I liked that there was closure for Hollie, Moira and 2 others, whose lives had no doubt gone down the 'if only' route. There's some solid old-fashioned policework here, although that Hollie was allowed to remain on the case required a lot of suspension of disbelief.
I'm not sure I liked Hollie enough, though, to want to read the previous tales in this series. It's easy to judge when you read that her 2 youngest kids are with her ex, whilst her eldest (not the ex's) is with her towards the end of the book. I don't think I recall even one interaction or Facetime or call with them, or any talk of having them, which felt a little weird. At the same time, it's a bit convenient as with the kids in her care, she wouldn't be able to do her job. Still, it was a cohesive and believable read.
ARC courtesy of NetGalley and Storm Publishing for my reading pleasure.
This will be a difficult case for Detective Hollie Turner as it transports her back to a traumatic night 25 years ago when her best friend, Moira, disappeared at the Hull Fair. It was if she simply vanished. The only thing that was left of her was a hair tie and a bloody stuffed animal she had just won. Fast forward to the present where a retired police superintendent's body has been found at the same fair.
As the investigation deepens, buried secrets and past allegations of abuse are coming back to the surface. It seems that disgusting past behavior may have future consequences because someone remembers the past.
This fantastic twisty mystery will take you back and forth from 1999 to the present so you can get the full picture of all of the characters and the part they played and are still playing. This was a superb, yet disturbing mystery, which will hook you in the from the first chapter. The twists will fool you into thinking you have it figured out, but then you will learn that you are wrong. Detective Hollie Turner is an intriguing character with a razor sharp mind who presides over her job without fear and a strong sense of justice. This is another winning installment in the Detective Hollie Turner series which earns a solid five stars from this reader.
Thank you to Storm Publishing and NetGalley for this ARC. I am leaving this review voluntarily.
This story dives deeper into Detective Hollie Turner's past, and what happened that made her want to become a detective. 25 years ago, Hollie's best friend disappeared into thin air, leaving Hollie to wonder what had happened to her friend and the case went cold. Now, Hollie is called to investigate another murder, and as the investigation continues, things come up that point to this new case potentially being connected to the disappearance of her friend.
This book was just non-stop from the beginning and was thoroughly entertaining. This story is told in two different timelines, the present, and 25 years ago when Moira disappeared. The chapters that tell about the past, let the reader experience more of Hollie and Moira's friendship, and how Hollie handled Moira's disappearance. Being able to become emotionally invested in their friendship and heartbreak was fantastic and is something that is often missing from these types of books.
This book was full of constant twists and turns and even brought in extra layers to the dark themes. If you decide to give this book a read, please be aware that there are heavy topics such as sexual abuse of children, on top of the already promised topic of murder and solving a cold case.
In this latest book in the DI Hollie Turner series, Hollie is transported back in time to when she was a university student in Hull, living a typical uni life with her mates. In particular her best friend Moira, who hadn’t had the best of upbringings and was a keeper of secrets. One fateful evening, the two girls visited the Hull funfair, an annual event that was much anticipated. Although having a great time, Moira suddenly makes off, having seen someone she knew and proceeds to follow him. By the time Hollie has realised what’s happening they have both disappeared, and eventually Moira is declared a missing person. All these years later, does the disappearance of Moira have anything to do with the murder of a retired police officer and the suicide of the social worker who was in charge at the children’s home where Moira lived?
This series continues to go from strength to strength. A really enjoyable read with Hollie and her team becoming firm favourites. In this offering we get to hear a little more of Hollie’s backstory and it makes the character much more interesting.
Thank you to Storm Publishing and Netgalley for the arc of this brilliant thriller book. Her friend vanished twenty-five years ago. Now a new murder case could solve the mystery. When the body of a retired police superintendent is found murdered at Hull Fair, Detective Hollie Turner is thrust into a case that will force her to confront her own painful history First of all, this book is definitely a binge read, the author hooks you in right from the start. And what a story as it spans twenty five years, alternating between present and 1999. I loved Hollie and now want to read her other cases, she's strong, compassionate and extremely likeable. But what a harrowing story of her best friend, it made me feel so sad to read what she'd endured. This author is extremely talented, to be able to grab your attention in such a way that you're invested from the off, is the sign of amazing talent. The ending was a twist which if you follow my reviews, you'll know I'm a sucker for. A must read Kerry Kennedy Author
