We started Filthy Loot with less than $50 and the idea to start a zine called Fucked Up Stories to Read in the Day Time. Five years later, I returned to these three issues and asked some of my favorite authors from them to contribute to this anthology, including Madeleine Swann, Brendan Vidito, Eric Raglin, Sam Richard, Betty Rocksteady, Katy Michelle Quinn and Tom Over.
Through the three issues that we put out, the tone went from Bizarro to (lite) Splatterpunk pretty quickly, and this anthology mixes the two into an interesting, surrealistic, splattery read.
Oh, Filthy Loot, this was exactly what I needed after reading a gut punch of a book earlier today! This book is a small but mighty collection of stories that make you screw up your face and say WTF???
Jillysticks taught me that if you have weird neighbours, it's best to leave them be. They're weird for a reason, and you don't need to be caught up in that! I'm hardcore judging for her being a Days of Our Lives fan, though....All My Children or bust!
Glitterati Guignol was a ride, and probably the one that had me questioning reality the most! Good for Candace, though! It's always great to see horrible men get what they deserve.
Boning: not sure if the lesson here is 'if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is' or 'be as specific as possible when making wishes or bargains with supernatural entities.' Maybe both? Both sound good!
The Antecedent: very poetic! I loved the connection with the painting and the irony of how the story ended. No deer in the bed, though....seems highly unsanitary, flower spawning or no.
All the Things She Buried sure escalated quickly! And provided a very valuable lesson on self-fulfilling prophecies and the dangerous cycle you can slip into because of them.
Untitled: I always love a good revenge story. The bloodier, the better, I say!
A Subservient Breed: The Chimpening has arrived, and we are all at the mercy of baboons and unethically modified kidnapped children!
This one was a lot of fun! I can't wait to explore more of Filthy Loot's catalogue and see what other gory, whacky things they've got!
Ira and Filthy Loot put out some great books that I really enjoy...but I am posting this as a free review, I'm not on Filthy Loot's dime. - Fucked Up Stories to Read in the Daytime as a compilation of stories published in preceding volumes of a Zine by the same name. One thing I can always count on, is when Filthy Loot puts out a collection of short stories. the authors included will, without fail, provide a succession of stories that feel fresh, and completely unique. I will state, that this book is not what would be considered "Extreme Horror", at least in my opinion. This isn't splatter for splatters sake, even so the stories included are rich with death, gore and a load of other nasty surprises. They're strange, dark and twisted in some surprising ways. It's a fun read that may even make you laugh at a few points.
