Sonny Bluejacket has inherited a ranch in Texas. On his way into town, he stops at a small local restaurant and meets Maggie Brennan, a waitress, full of sass and a secret talent for painting. They fall in love, survive a few road bumps and aim for the future.
Absolutely lovely. There was a bit of suspense in the first quarter, then the rest is life, love and created family. Sonny and Maggie in the happily ever after. Tears of happiness for them and their future.
I received a copy of this from NetGalley. I also purchased multiple formats of this novel to keep.
🎧 I listened to an audiobook version narrated by Tor Thom. A wonderful performance. I did push the speed to 1.5 so I could more closely follow an ebook copy and not be pages ahead.

This is a classic romance, which is definitely how I prefer my romance to come. I generally read Sharon Sala for her light Romantic-Suspense books, which I really like. This one is a mix of romance, mysticism and light suspense. It's a different kind of romance and a long one too. Several plot threads all weave round Sonny Bluejacket, but I didn't feel engaged by any of them. It felt like Sharon Sala was telling me the story instead of letting me experience it. 3 1/2-Stars

Setting: NW Texas country (Amarillo is nearest big city)
I love Jodi Thomas books .. also set in this area (Palo Duro Canyon) .. and was definitely comparing this to hers in my head when i started the book.
But that went away as strong characters Sonny and Maggie emerged in this story.
Liked: Native American OK glimpses. Yellow Rose Cafe. Maggie’s humble and direct personality. Sunsets. And surprisingly all the horse / ranch parts.
This was a perfect read for me as I bought it on a long road trip to a family wedding. Enough said.
Warning: Sex before marriage.

A banged up former Pro Rodeo bull rider inherits a ranch in Texas and meets a friendly diner waitress, two wounded hearts cross paths in this first in series small town contemporary romance sprinkled with some indigenous magical realism. I was introduced to Sharon Sala’s writing when I began reading her Blessings, Georgia series and because of how much I loved those books, I was eager to settle in with Sunset for some heartfelt reading.
Sonny Bluejacket left the pro circuit for good when an accident with a bull left him barely alive and dying on the operating table twice. In the last few years, he’s lived quietly with his older brother and family taking local ranch jobs training their horses and biding his time. Then a legal packet arrives with the shocking information that a man he knew through the rodeo work, and indirectly responsible for Sonny’s accident, has left him his quarter-horse ranch down in Texas. Sonny’s life is set in motion again when he packs up and prepares to follow his dreams in Crossroads, Texas.
Nothing’s easy and Sonny’s good for nothing dad who abandoned the family learned of his good luck and is determined to either get something from it or keep his son from something good. And, on arrival, Sonny learns his ranch has been hit by a thief and a squatter. Time to cowboy up!
Meanwhile, Magnolia Brennan has found a small corner of the world to call home for the first time in her life after being abandoned at birth, growing up in the foster care system, and getting dumped by a guy on the porch of the Yellow Rose café. The owner not only took her in to work and give her a place to live, but they share a found family relationship. Maggie loves her sunsets and has a secret hobby drawing and painting them along with the life she observers around her. Her days of merely watching life happen to others ends when big, handsome Sonny Bluejacket enters the door of the café and they forge a connection on the spot.
From the hard past situations this pair overcame, Maggie’s beautiful art, Sonny’s work with the horses and the ranch, the small town, and Sonny’s Muskogee heritage and mystic gift, Sunset was one sensational read. Its big and slow moving, brings in a handful of perspectives as characters move into and out of the story surrounding Sonny and Maggie. There are spikes of suspense and one long-build suspense thread involving Sonny’s criminal of a dad. The slow burn after insta-attraction romance was lovely as these two heal each other and come together in a close partnership. Can’t wait for more books set in the Crossroads series. Definitely recommend Sunset to all the Western Contemporary Romance fans!

Hire an editor, Sharon! My god! This 467 page book was about 200 pages too long. I’m starting to suspect you get paid per word, SHARON.
Since I started this review with my gripes about editing, let’s continue that thread for a moment. When you write in third person, we don’t want to hear the characters relay the same story to the other characters FIVE TIMES OVER. Also, you give us two pages of A GROCERY SHOPPING RECAP (which did not advance the plot at all, by the way) but half a page describing the first amorous encounter between the main characters? I guess I need to be 50 years older to enjoy grocery shopping recaps more than foreplay, but Sharon probably knows her geriatric audience better than I do! I skipped whole pages of this book due to it being the redundant department of redundancy.
Let’s talk STORYTELLING now. Yay! I liked the idea behind this book, but it was the worst execution of an idea I’ve experienced in literature yet. And if you just read that last sentence and thought, “Well that seems like a bit of an exaggeration,” it’s not. I said what I said. Ignoring the fact that the dialogue was cheesy, and repetitive, and the characters fall in love instantly knowing pretty much nothing about one another, I liked the whole clairvoyant hot Indigenous main male character shtick. That was mildly entertaining. HOWEVER, this book contained no character development or growth whatsoever and the characters were more like stereotyped after-school-special stock characters with no heart and soul. The “suspense” parts of the book were resolved within about two pages, followed by 100 pages of bland wedding planning that took about one day at a mall.
In summation, this book was extremely unsatisfying. I all but skimmed the last 100 pages due to literally nothing happening other than, you guessed it, MORE GROCERY SHOPPING!
10/10 DO NOT RECOMMEND this book if you’re younger than the age of 75 :)

Four Hundred and eighty pages? I didn't even realize it as I read this on my Kindle. The pages flew.
Whenever I see that there is a new Sharon Sala book, I immediately purchase it. No brainer! And just as I knew I would, I finished this new series starter with a smile on my face. I'm a happy camper. ;)

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book, provided by Sourcebooks Casablanca via Netgalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
3.5 stars.
A beautiful romance full of uplifting feelings and lots of magical moments, “Sunset”, by Sharon Sala, features two good-hearted people who have gone through hardship and finally find their HEA.
I loved the leads, their innate kindness, and the characters in general. It feels as Sonny and Maggie were destined to be together.
Sonny’s talent (magic?) with animals is an important dimension of his mystical personality, which contemplates other features. He’s also a hardened, pragmatical person, and all this facets result in an alluring hero.
Maggie is an interesting heroine, too: strong, sensitive, and with a secret talent, too.
In general, I appreciated a certain solemnty in the tone but some parts I found too melodramatic.
I also found the story and the dialogue a bit repetitive sometimes.
A pleasant read where fate plays an important part.

I think my favorite part of this book was how quickly Maggie and Sonny fell in love. Usually, I’m skeptical when it comes to people who fall “in love” quickly. I’m a firm believer that you need to know someone before you can love someone.
But for some reason, this one worked. Maybe it’s because Maggie spent her life alone and recognized true love when it came along because she hadn’t run across so many versions before. And for Sonny? Well, when you go through some of the things that he’s been through, you appreciate what’s real and you don’t settle for what’s not.
Sorry to be so vague, but I don’t want to give the story away; it’s a romance so telling you that Maggie and Sonny get together is not a spoiler, lol!

Sharon Sala's new series kicks off with Sonny Bluejacket and Magnolia Brennen. Sonny is a bull rider who survived a trampling and Magnolia is a waitress who survived a rough start to life. They meet and soon love blossoms. Life isn't easy for either or them and they still have some trials to go through together before they can start their happily ever after.
Sala is a master at characters and these are no different. I loved Sonny and Maggie from the start. Their story was compelling so it was a very fast read. I didn't put the book down.

What a great start to a new series. Loved every minute of the story and hated for it to end. Great cast of characters that make you feel like you are part of the story. Never a dull moment. Filled with surprises. Looking forward to the next book in the series.

Sunset is the first book in the Crossroads series set in Texas by Sharon Sala. World-champion bull rider Sonny Bluejacket was bucked off a bull and critically injured, dying twice on the operating table but was brought back and survived. He retired from the rodeo circuit and was living in Oklahoma with his brother and his family. He is at loose ends when he finds out that he has inherited a horse ranch in Crossroads, a small town in West Texas. He says goodbye and heads off to what he hopes will be his new life. In Crossroads, is The Yellow Rose Café, the first thing you see when you arrive. It's the place everyone in town meets at. Magnolia Brennen, aka Maggie, has worked there since her boyfriend dumped her off in the parking lot and drove away. She had nowhere to go and was hired on the spot. Sonny meets her and there are instant sparks. She is the one who shares the news with him that there is a problem at the ranch. As Sonny forges a new life for himself, he has lots to deal with, as well as his growing feelings for Maggie.
Sunset is a typical Sharon Sala story. There is always someone who needs help and a new start. In this story Maggie was the original character, the one that needed both a hand up and a new start, then Sonny arrives also looking for a new start. There is always that love at first sight aspect and here it is Sonny and Magnolia. We have women who are victims and finally have the opportunity to get out and save themselves and their children (there are two of them in this story), someone who wants to take what isn't theirs and had murder on the mind, and a hero who saves the day. There is also the requisite dysfunctional family with Sonny's father and everyone else in the family. Having said all that, there are some differences as well. Sonny is an indigenous person and has great respect for the elders. He received second sight when he almost died and he now has visions. I liked the indigenous focus. I did enjoy the story, but the predictability definitely knocks if down a star. I will read or listen to the rest of the trilogy, but this will probably be the last of her books that I read.

After having died twice in surgery, he retreated to his brother Charlie’s home in Bluejacket Hollow, Oklahoma. After he heals, Sonny helps around Charlie’s farm as well as doing horse training for those in the area. Even so, Sonny is at loose ends until he receives a packet from a lawyer representing Emmit Cooper’s estate. The old rodeo clown had retired to a horse training ranch outside of Crossroads, Texas, after Sonny’s accident. Emmit blamed himself for Sonny’s injuries and because of that he had left Sonny his ranch, home, truck, horses, and all other belongings, thus giving Sonny a new direction in life.
After arriving in Crossroads after a long bus ride from Oklahoma, Sonny made his way to the Yellow Rose Cafe. There he met waitress Maggie Brennen and found an instant connection. The connection they discovered and the support they provided each other forms the backbone of this novel.

I’m not sure how the author does it, but her writing and characters just tug at my heart. Sonny Bluejacket is a world champion bull rider but when he got injured he went back to live a quiet life. All that changes when he inherits a horse ranch in a small Texas town. The moment he stepped into that town he was met with issues but through it all he also met a waitress that caught his eye. Maggie is tough as they come. Growing up in the foster system and working as a waitress, she’s no damsel waiting to be rescued. She’s a spitfire and has a soft spot for sunsets. I really enjoyed how the title tied into the story, and I loved the way Maggie and Sonny’s journey was woven together. The author also does a great job of weaving in the other characters, and making them complex. I loved this story and I’m not ready to say goodbye just yet.
I listened to the audiobook, and Tor Thom does a solid job portraying Sonny and several of the male characters. His tone is gruff, which fits, and I didn’t mind the female voices either. I listened at 2.3x speed, so opinions may vary, but overall it worked well for me.

Sonny Bluejacket a former champion bull rider died twice on the operating table after being thrown from a bull. He has been living with his brother for the last few years in Oklahoma. He receives notice he has inherited a ranch in Texas from Emmet and old friend. Magnolia "Maggie" Brennen works at The Yellow Rose as a waitress for the last several years. They meet when Sonny gets off the bus in town the first night. Pearl the cafe owner knows Sonny and welcomes him into the cafe. There is instant attraction between Maggie and Sonny.
This is a story about the town of Crossroads and people that live in town. This was a wonderful story about Sonny and Maggie find love and people of town involved in their lives.

I'm not good at writing reviews. After reading the Kentucky series, I was left wanting more. I completely loved Sunset, and I am looking forward to the release of Midnight. Crossroads is gonna be a great series, just like Kentucky.

This is the first book by Sharon Sala that I’ve read, and I can say that I’ll be looking for her back catalog. Circumstances dictate former rodeo bull rider Sonny’s move from his hometown. He’s immediately faced with the issue of stolen cattle & tack. At the same time, he’s enamored with a server at the local diner/cafe. It’s a sweet story that moves quickly, despite conflict with peripheral characters, to a satisfying end. I look forward to the next installment in this series.

I always find myself in awe when I read a story by Sharon Sala. Her writing and the characters she creates always leave me feeling so happy. I always wish that I could hop a bus and find myself in one of her worlds.
I enjoyed Sunset so much. There were times that I laughed myself silly and then there were time that I had to grab my tissues.
Sonny Bluejacket is a World-champion bull rider who had a terrible accident that ended his career. He's been living with his brother and his family when he gets an unexpected surprise. Once he strolls into Crossroads his life will forever be changed. He'll find love, friendship and a purpose that has been missing the last few years.
Magnolia Brennen has always felt like a throwaway, until she was dumped on the steps of The Yellow Rose and Pearl the owner took her in. She's a hard worker by day and a secret painter by night. Always watching and painting those Sunsets.
When Sonny and Magnolia first meet, you could see the chemistry flying off the pages. It didn't take much to know these two would have an incredible love story. Of course if you've read a Sharon Sala book before, you would know that there is always trouble brewing somewhere and it just has to be coming for Sonny. Sonny though will have none of that and is ready for when the storm comes.

A new beginning! I love the Blessings series and was happy to learn about this new series set in West Texas. It’s centers around the small town of Crossroads where Magnolia founded herself dumped at the Yellow Rose Cafe by her now ex boyfriend. Pearl the owner picked up the shattered pieces of Maggie’s life and welcomed her as if she was her own. Now five years later life is good for Maggie waitressing for Pearl renting her own little house. And yet there are times when she feels unloved, a throwaway baby, since she was given up at 2 weeks old. Then she meets Sonny, unknown to her a ex rodeo bull rider hero that nearly died and had been recovering at his brother’s.
Sonny was shocked when a name from the past left him 1000 acres, a house and some prime horseflesh. So he packs up and leaves Oklahoma and heads to Texas to see what new direction his life will take. Grabbing a bit to eat at Rose’s was his lucky day. He meet Maggie and found out not only did she know the previous owner, she also cleaned house for him.
There of course will be some bad blood from Sonny’s past to follow him and a secret passion that Maggie hides, that comes together in a sweet romance. Good story. After nearly dying form a bull riding accident, Sonny receives an unexpected inheritance that gives him a chance to start over. Immediately he is drawn to Maggie Brennan, a waitress in Crossroads. Maggie has had a sad start to her life. She has experience abandonment all her life but she is still willing to give Sonny a chance. Theirs is a sweet romance with a little danger from Sonny's dad. Very much Sharon Sala's style.

Loved this story about Sonny Bluejacket who was a rodeo man and was bucked by a bull. He was critically injured, died twice on the operating table and survived and was given a gift by his ancestors in which he could see bad things happening to the people he loved and warn them He was living with his brother and family on their ranch when he inherited a horse ranch in Crossroads Texas from Emmit and left to move there. He stopped at the diner he remembered and the same person was running it. There he met Maggie who is an important part of the story. Follow his journey as he runs the ranch and how things turn out with Maggie. A GREAT READ. I am looking forward to reading more in this series.

I love Sharon Sala's series Jubilee Kentucky so when I found out she had started a new series I couldn't wait to read it. Sunset is book one of the Crossroads series. It did not disappoint. It is the perfect small town romance story. Sonny is a champion bull rider who was injured in a rodeo and died twice on the operating table. He survived, retired from bull riding and inherited a ranch in Crossroad Texas. It is love at first sight with Maggie, a waitress who is the first person he meets in Crossroads. Their relationship grows as they get to know each other and new opportunities arise for each of them. Thanks for @NetGalley for the ARC of this book. I really enjoyed it and am looking forward to the next book in this series.

Meandering Soap Opera
I was enjoying the book as a light read and thought it was wrapping up nicely when I noticed my % read was only in the 50’s!! Halfway? What on earth else could happen?? As it turns out, not much.
The second 1/2 of the book feels completely unnecessary— characters retelling the events of the 1st 1/2, tedious descriptions of every aspect of daily life, etc. I think there’s a good book in there, but it needed a better editor to refine the story. As it is, it reminds me of a student essay trying to make a certain word count by including random things.

Good book
Another good Sharon Sala book. It has romance, danger, action, and a little bit of paranormal in it and I loved all the characters. I am excited to read the next book in the series.

Sharon Sala has written a beautiful, heartwarming love story about two unusual and unconventional characters. The hero, Sonny Bluejacket, and his family are indigenous Native Americans who are well loved by every citizen in the small town they grew up in. I was immediately captivated by the Bluejacket family because I learned a lot about some of their protocols and customs and how they are treated as normal as everyone else.
Sonny and Magnolia “Maggie” Brennen immediately sense an instant, unusual attraction for each other and realize that they are madly in love with each other.
However, their road to love and happiness has not been without painful obstacles. Two weeks after Maggie was born, her mother abandoned her on the fire department’s steps where she was automatically placed into foster care. She never really had a mother relationship, or any other close bond until she moved to Crossroads, a little town in West Texas. After many years of working in the Yellow Rose cafe, she and her boss, Pearl, inadvertently develops a mother/daughter relationship.
Sonny has also experienced his own problems. Years ago he was a world-champion bull rider when he was thrown off of a bull and was seriously injured. Twice he almost died on the operating table, but he unexpectedly survived. As a result, he retired from the rodeo circuit, moved in with his family, and helped them breed and sell horses.
Fortunately, he inherits a huge ranch from an old friend from the rodeo circuit. Now he can expand his breeding ranch and live his dream. Unfortunately, this happiness also comes with obstacles. Immediately, he needs to deal with a neighbor who has stolen ranch horses, equipment and a truck from his new ranch Plus this same neighbor has even stolen some of Sonny’s property that he has inherited.
Sonny also must deal with his no-good father who is jealous of him and hates him. He wants to steal Sonny’s new land and everything he has even if he has to kill him to do it.
Readers will adore and respect this endearing, delightful couple who, in spite of their obstacles always remains positive and optimistic about their dreams and their future. Their beautiful love is uplifting, inspiring and refreshing. It is obvious that, in spite of their differences, they are born soulmates!
