Traitors, outlaws, and other unlikely heroes are mustered to restore peace in a broken realm. But has hope already been lost? Discover their fate in a new daring series of episode books in Legion of the Black Moon

In the wake of a civil war that shattered a kingdom, traitors and outlaws are conscripted to tame the land and do the bidding of a powerful arch-mage secretly ruling in the name of a child queen. Led by the brooding Lord Master Elliot Lampeer, the motley band navigates the remnants of a fractured kingdom, facing insidious forces gathering around them.

There is a witch shrouded in mystery, leading wild horsemen from exotic lands. A former knight, whose heart aches with loss, struggling to overcome defeat with his kinsmen. A savage barbarian from the Iron Mountains, seeking a future for his people but has no true loyalties. And a dishonored mage, whose scheming threatens to unravel their fragile alliance.

Legion of the Black Fields of Grey takes readers into a world where God has fallen, hope is a mere whisper, and redemption is intertwined with a bleak fate shadowing everyone’s steps.

An intriguing enough story as far as it goes. This feels like a small chunk of the very beginning of something much larger. There is a story here but it's a rather short one and a bit of it gets bogged down in the amount of world building and character introduction that happens in the first chapter.
I would be curious to see a bit more of the world and where the story is likely to go, though for the most part the writing left me a touch distant from the majority of characters.

As much exposition as there was I really could have done with a touch more. I imagine some of the remaining mysteries will be cleared up in successive works. Still, interesting as some of the concepts were it didn't entirely work for me. I really would like the chance to form my own deeper connection to some of the characters in writing that gave them a little more immediacy.

That said it was very clear there is some vast worldbuilding here and in it there were characters I'd very much have liked to be given a bit more window into.

Fields of Grey is a very interesting fantasy novella that follows a mismatched group of warriors attempting to prevent further turmoil in a land already abandoned by God and split by battle - and they are willing to kill anyone that threatens to work against the queen.

Conceptually, this book was great, but I felt it suffered from being too short. The Legion contains a cast of so many unique and interesting characters, but we get to see very little of most of them. Furthermore, the story sets up plenty of intriguing conflict, namely the moral dilemma of whether it is right to execute the children of the rebels that had already been killed at the opening of the book, but the length of the book means that the problem is wrapped up before the reader really has time to consider the moral versus the strategic implications of the decision on more than a surface level, and the conclusion therefore feels rushed. The world itself seems like it will be a very rich place to explore in future installments of the series, however, and I hope that this also gives us the opportunity to see both the aftermath of this story's end play out, as well as to see more (and hopefully more extensively explored) moral conundrums facing these outlaws.

Interesting read.

Very interesting story. The beginning was little slow. I wish the characters were defined more in order to distinguish them. The conflict was good but seemed to be solved big too easily, with little to risk. I look forward to reading more of this story to see where it goes.
