Erich, a German Protestant soldier during the Thirty Years' War, rescues Mara, an accused witch, from torture and execution by burning. As they travel across a war-torn landscape towards the convent where she was raised, founded centuries earlier by Hildegard of Bingen, they are joined by outcasts and survivors, each playing a part in this grand story of faith, fear, and survival.

Klaus is the leader of the local Catholic League, who zealously enforces the growing power of the Catholics against the Protestants in the region. He tracks Erich after the initial escape but fails to capture him, then vows to continue the pursuit because of a long-standing personal hatred and their religious and class differences.

The Black Bow features a large cast of characters and explores various aspects of the long and brutal conflict between Protestant and Catholic forces. This was a terrible time to live through for many Europeans, especially those in the German principalities. Countless lives were lost on the battlefields and in the countryside due to plundering troops from both sides of the conflict. It was also a time when witchcraft persecution was near its peak, which heightened the climate of fear and repression in many societies.

The Black Bow is an object drawn from German myth and legend. It grants degrees of power to the person who summons it, much of which comes from a deep connection to ancestry and the natural world.

Unfortunately, this book wasn't for me.

There aren't many books set during the XVII century, so I was curious to read a story set during one of big wars happening in Europe. When the book starts, the conflict had been going on for over fifteen years already, so we are taken directly into it, in a way.

The main character, a man named Erich who works in jail, has seen firsthand the effects of the war when his father died and his property was taken, like the black bow mentioned in the title. Moreover, in the city where the story starts (Ulm, Germany), there's a conflict between Catholics and Protestants. Erich is one of the latter. Therefore, he had a lot of reasons for fighting for his cause.

The blurb and the prologue made me think that Erich would soon join a cause, go to war, have a bigger purpose. Action. Enter Mara, a beautiful woman who is in jail because she's accused of witchcraft. She meets him and tells him about a destiny he has to fulfill and he believes her and puts his family's lives at risk just to free her. To me, this is such a noble idiot action, for a man who seems so dedicated to protecting his dear family.

Aside from this, the writing didn't work out for me. The pace was a bit stilted, and the style was too detached for my taste, I couldn't be invested in the story. I also thought the characters weren't fleshed out much, their POVs looked the same to me.

Erich is a man with a fragile masculinity who waited for a woman ( Mara) to tell him that he is destined for big things to rescue her, even though there were other witches have been subjected to torture but this one is special, she tackled his teeny weeny insecure sorry excuse for a personality . You think that’s it, nope! He had feelings for her even though he’s married. the fragile masculinity is not enough, let’s add infidelity to spice things up. this saga is too much for me to handle. Das ist nicht gut, Entschuldigung!

I recently finished reading The Black Bow by A.R. Bender. The book gave me a glimpse into the Thirty Years’ War with a mix of history and adventure. I liked the courage and faith shown in the story, though some parts felt a little slow. Still, it was an interesting read for someone like me who’s new to this kind of book.

The world building has a moderate pace is too not that complex to understand, thus it makes the story engaging. While the pacing occasionally lingers on detailed descriptions, those slower moments make the story richer and the emotional stakes more profound. More than just a mystery, this is a story about love, resilience, and the way our choices define us, leaving a lasting impression long after the final page. Highly recommend this book.

This is a story embedded in carefully researched detail about a horrific time in Europe, full of witch burnings and sectarian war. As you follow the story and engage with the characters, you find yourself imagining what it must have been like to live in those times - and you have the added knowledge that the end is not in sight: there will be more war and more atrocities to come. But it's not just a tale of horror, there is also a vision of a counterculture emerging out of the old folkways and through the connection with the centre of learning in the abbey founded by Hildegard of Bingen.

It's a very entertaining and powerful book. I recommend it if you like historical books. It really surprised me, and it's a pretty good book.

Compelling characters

A sprawling tale of a protestant family caught up in the religious turmoil of Germany during the 30 years war. The main characters are compelling, although the story meanders a bit and feels too drawn out. Interesting and clearly well researched.

Besides the slow pacing and the slightly heavy language, the story built tension throughout. I think readers who enjoy gothic, dramatic, and emotionally charged stories might love this book. Still, the slow pace sometimes made me stop for a while, which is why it took me so long to finish this book. For an English beginner, some of the words might also be too difficult to understand. Well done!
