Stellar

RFM done right, do i need to say more? College drama with a twist, a gentle femdom, bully-to-lover romance. Nothing too extreme, no strange fetishes, no stupid third act breakups.
If you have read His Orc Charioteer by this same author, you know you’re in for a good read, even if you don’t care about shifters, mates and other over-used tropes (like i said, this one is done right).
P.S. would very much like to see a kind of a spin-off with Irina as a main focus of romance.She’s a goth sweetheart.

Is this an actual good book? Most likely, no. But I enjoyed the reverse dynamics: bad girl (with a motorcycle)/nerd boy; alpha girl/unshifted boy.

May I interest you in:

It’s pretty seldom that a romance with any level of smut makes it onto my Goodreads (the last being either Iris Kelley Doesn’t Date or Irone Flame, lol), but I feel like this one deserves its place among the wholesome SoL manga and epic fantasy that take up most of my online bookish landscape. Kudos to K.R. Treadway for writing a damn good romance with a whole ice cream sundae’s worth of delicious trope-y toppings. Was this pure junk food pleasure? Definitely. Do I now low-key want to keep an eye on everything this author puts out regardless of the resulting tooth decay? Indubitably. Did the super tall and toned rugby-playing bully of an FMC have anything to do with this? I shall neither confirm nor deny.

Another fantastic book from one of my favorite authors.

I've read it about three times in different iterations and it's been a fantastic read each time. I really enjoyed the fun mix of Americana with shifters. I think Flynn did a great job of making a world where shifters can just be an every day normal part of life. I also really enjoyed the character development of the FMC and MMC, and felt like there was a lot of organic growth for both of them.

Story was a lot of fun and I felt there was a really good mix of interpersonal, interpersonal, and external drama to keep you hooked. I really look forward to seeing more stories in this setting. This story I feels show why Flynn is felt by many to be THE guy when it comes to mono-romance for men stories. As stated I've read it about three times already and it's almost assuredly a book I will keep coming back to. 5/5.

Fantastic fantastic, fantastic!

Saw the author post about it on reddit.
Normally I see a book rec, read reviews and deliberate on whatever to buy em or not only to end up not doing so.

This book tho? Saw what its about on Reddit and bought it... immedeitly without any thoughts needed.

And by the night goddess it was worth it!!

Generic af tropes turned into gold.. no, into platinum.
Why? Simple.

1) The setting is believeable and the world building is rich.
Author was like: "shifters just hiding from humanity while living alongside them? Yeah thats not believeable".
And they are indeed public.
Author wrote a unqiue setting and pulled it off fantasticly.
If the multiverse was real I xould see this world being a thing.

2) Characters that act like real people.
Is there even a need to explain that one?

Eagrly awating for more books in the future!

This one is fantastic, the exact kind of book Im always searching for when I lurk the RFM reddit and discord. If anyones asks me for recommendations from now on, this one will be among the first few. It has a very good blurb which hooked me instantly, a badass leading FMC(ohh yes gimme more), very logical progression between the MCs (being "fated" doesn't magically solve every new issue/past grievances, they work through it), doesnt get bogged down by drama, a (mostly)fluffy romance with no fluff and a proper conclusion with a promise for more. It ticks all the right boxes for me and Ill be looking forward to whatever comes next from this author.

Fun shifter story

This one hit all the buttons. Loved the characters and you really felt them work through the rough start of their relationship. Even though the were “fated” to be together it still wasn’t instant love. They had to work for the relationship. It didn’t seemed forced and came from a very logical progression (you know for a supernatural relationship). It is a complete book with no need of a sequel but i still hope to read more of these characters and what they get up too.

I cannot explain the feelings I felt reading this
This book was pure lightning in my veinssss
It was so good I didn’t know what to do with myself

Bully romance but she’s the bully.
Fated mates and they can’t keep their hands off each other.
Secret relationship because she’s embarrassed.
They’re both protective over each other.
She’s the leader of a pack.
He’s nerdy and she’s athletic.

This couldn’t have been more perfect.

~~~
“And I was in such deep shit because making Charlotte smile felt like winning the lottery.”
“My overheated body flooded with a sudden sense of well-being as I laid eyes on my mate for the first time since this morning. It was as if liquid mint laced with her citrus smell was being shot into my veins. I practically slumped off the bench in relief.”
“I chose to love Joseph for his bravery, not fear for his safety.”
“I took that moment for myself. Just to absorb the sight of her. Her strength, her stubbornness—even the deep well of her anger, which she somehow turned into an asset more often than not. My gorgeous mate…mine. I loved Charlotte because of her callused edges. She wasn’t some fantasy, but a vibrant, contradictory person, a woman whose flaws made her close to perfect in my eyes.”
“All of it hit me at once…the dancing, the sexual tension, the roiling power of our mingled emotions through the bond. Everything. This was the most magical moment of my life, a dream with forty-thousand volts running through it.”
“My beautiful wolf had to know how much it affected me to see her here. How loved I felt knowing she had picked me.
My heart had come home.”
3.25/5 - The role reversal of this was nice with the girl being more of the bad/tough one instead of the bad boy and the shy girl. I think this just wasn't for me, I think I've outgrown high school settings and I didn't love the bully aspect of it. Or more specifically I just felt weird reading a high school setting that also was open door? Just feels off but if I was younger maybe it wouldn't bother me. There was also something about it that felt like you could tell it was someone older writing teenagers, like it felt like the languge they were using was of the early 2000s instead of how kids today talk. It's still a cute story though for someone looking for a reverse jock/nerd werewolf romance.
I don’t think I really like a “bully romance” but this book brought it back around with some really mature conversations about the need for communication in a relationship. Which is kind of wild cos this is a fated mates shifter book and the characters are 18.
It was short and sweet.
RTC, but some thoughts!
Joseph. Main character. MMC. 18. Nerdy. New to shifting. Target of bullying. Too sweet to his own detriment. Supportive househusband energy. Good parents. Not experienced. EDM maker.
Charlotte. Love Interest. FMC. 18. Rugby player. Alpha wolf. Violent. Abusive home-life. Experienced. Construction worker. Supports women. Fuck authority.
This was a book largely from MMC POV, but this was an interesting Romance For Men book.
Joseph is a half shifter and the victim of Charlotte’s bullying. But as he and Charlotte become entangled, his shifter genes awaken and he recognizes her as his mate. And both are horrified from it. Charlotte is an athletic alpha wolf with a mean streak born from her abusive home life and, partially, excused because of it too. She’s the stereotypical power fantasy tomboyish 2000s YA protagonist—but in rugby and she has her own pack of all young ladies.
And she doesn’t believe in mates.
In Joseph and Charlotte’s dance, he approaches Charlotte like she’s a predator—because she is. But he’s still hurt by her past and present actions. And to that, I commend the book. I loved the book of how Charlotte provides for Joseph as well, and Joseph is accepting and provides her with support.
But this is where I begin to criticize things.
Joseph seemed too forgiving for me with the extent of Charlotte’s bullying. He had to coax her to be gentle and answer questions, and whenever she hurt him verbally, while he did have his own bite, if Charlotte looked sad, then Joseph forgives her.
I wish this had been touched on some more. I’m an angst girlie. So, for me, I didn’t like that Joseph shouldered the emotional burden and Charlotte got away with that. It would have been a larger character arc if she was more initiative of more emotional support without becoming angry about it.
I did enjoy Charlotte recognized her actions were bad and she couldn’t fix them. But I wished we had more time to see how deeply Charlotte hurt Joseph and how she’s witnessing the actions of her consequences, especially Joseph being frightened of her and her being the reason.
Irina is a side character and Charlotte’s best friend, alongside Jess. Irina is a goth girl with a traditional pack mindset, and I love her. I wish she had been a bit more involved.
I’m curious how Jess will be redeemed. I’m assuming the high schooler she attacked is her mate. I hope he doesn’t easily forgive her.
The one thing I despised about this was the lack of POV switch warnings. Which is why this isn’t rated higher.
Good story. Good prose👍🏾
Gold Standard
Love a good bully/enemy to lovers story. This novel gives us just enough of an intro into the bullying, but then quickly transitions towards becoming lovers. It's not instant, but it also isn't finally reached at 90% into the book. The relationship starts early enough that it can be fully enjoyed and I wish more books did it like this! I also love that everyone has their flaws here, but they make it work and help each other.
This is a non-typical YA(?) romance book. I write the "?" because even though the characters are 18 and the storyline is compatible with the YA genre, there are descriptive sex scenes from the MMC’s (male main character's) point of view that made me think of the characters more as 20- or 21-year-olds, and I also feel like the target audience is probably closer to people in their early 20s because of it.
What was typical: animal shapeshifters, romance tropes, grumpy x sunshine dynamic, high school setting, bully-to-lover arc, school life, teenage angst.
What was not typical: male protagonist, reversed roles (badass, mean girl vs. unpopular, sensitive boy), some descriptive sex scenes - and yet despite having open-door steam, the story focused more on the emotional bond and romantic connection between the characters instead of just pure lust (which is obviously a big part of an adolescent's life), so kudos for that.
What I liked most about the book was exactly this: even though there were steamy parts, the focus remained on the emotional side of the relationship, emphasizing how important communication is - a message that’s both valuable and fantastic for a young reader picking up a romance book today. There was also a lot of self-reflection, and the MMC behaved and thought in a remarkably mature way. He was also the more romantically inclined one of the two, which I appreciated because it was a nice twist on typical gender roles.
There were also no cliché tropes like miscommunication, love triangles, or other overused drama elements (which I personally don’t enjoy). I emphasize this because I’ve read plenty of romance books with 25+ year-old characters acting far more immature than the 18-year-old male protagonist of this book. The teenage angst was really well done, I felt like I was 18 again while reading it.
My favorite chapter was definitely the ones where Joseph first transformed into his wolf form. That whole scene was beautifully and dramatically written. The two following chapters, told from their wolf bodies’s point of view, were also among my favorites. I appreciated how the shapeshifters lived in peace together with non-shapeshifters in this world.
Oh and I also really appreciated the very short chapters, let's not forget to mention it! For me, they made it easier to stay focused and keep up the momentum while reading.
The book used dual POV, though not in equal measure. It was mostly from the MMC's perspective. I understand that, due to the book’s message it was "necessary" to include the other's perspective occasionally, but it still felt a little off and broke the structural flow of the narrative, which I didn’t like much.
Another thing: the side characters were not developed at all, not a single one in my opinion. It was clear that they were only present to fulfill specific roles that served the main characters and the story beats. They felt flat and insignificant, and it was very obvious that they were there only to highlight or reinforce the main characters’ traits and behavior.
And speaking of characters, as for the main characters - while I liked the reversed roles, at times I felt it was a bit too much. No 18-year-old boy is constantly that sensitive without ever showing anger or frustration, and no 18-year-old girl is always that tough, like she’s running on pure testosterone. I think there could have been a better balance between those extremes.
The ending also felt a bit clumsy, it wrapped up too quickly and too idyllically. I understand it was meant to be a HEA (happily-ever-after), but it was overly perfect. Considering the book’s length, there would have been space for a more complete resolution. For example, what happened to Charlotte’s father? That plotline was dropped completely. Charlotte just suddenly moved in with Joseph's family (literally from one minute to another) and everyone was fine with it, no questions asked. What the heck?
And then the epilogue… in my opinion, that was a bit too much. It came off as cringe and over-the-top. We get it that they became the power couple at school, we don’t need three pages describing them smugly parading down the hallway like some sort of mob. I felt it unnecessary together with the "pack thing" at the very end. It felt like the author suddenly realised he didn't mention enough details about the Spiders click and wanted to show that they indeed had their own rituals and all.
All in all, while I had some issues with the pacing and the underdeveloped side characters, Charlotte’s Reject was still a great romance novel with fantastically rich world-building and, most importantly, a meaningful and timely message about romantic relationships.
Oh, and the cover is really awesome! I liked it a lot.
I really enjoyed the book. There were a couple of editing/grammar mistakes more towards the beginning (nothing too serious), but I think it was better in that regard later into the story. I thought the romance was cute, and the world (though not particularly deep) was an interesting enough backdrop for the story. While not my first time reading a "fated love" story, I think it might be my first reading one with this (mystical) "mate bond"? One of the things I really liked about the book was how the author generally used the bond to both hit some common tropey areas, but instead of devolving into miscommunication it goes the route of like, "Okay, somebody just said something stupid, but I can feel your concern/affection/sincerity through the bond, so let's take a second to figure this out".
I really liked Charlotte, and the dynamic she had with Joseph. Definitely don't hate reading a confident, strong female character. Still, I like that Joseph didn't always just let her have her way, and he would sometimes stand up for them/himself when he thought it was important, and she would at least hear him out, even if she didn't always go along with what he wanted. It felt like there was a good amount of give and take. My final thought on their dynamic is that I definitely could've done with way less of Joe being so horny for Charlotte. But at the same time, he's a high school boy, so I guess I can kind of give him a pass for it.
Overall, I think it's a pretty nice story. I might have a few small complaints about the execution of the overall plot, but nothing that would really bring my score down. I thought the story/romance was surprisingly cozy for how it started off, and for how much drama it seemed like there was going to be. I thought the characters (including the side characters like Irina) were nice, and it was fun to read the gender role swap.I enjoyed my time with the book.
So, I started this book thinking it would be just a silly little read.
Turns out, it was more than that. The relationship between the protagonists really surprised me — yes, there’s instalove, but since they’re mates, it makes sense. Still, what stood out to me most is how mature they are for their age. They’re teenagers, yet they communicate better than half the adult couples I’ve read about, and I really liked that. Their deep conversations add a completely different layer to the story.
The first chapters are definitely my favorites. Watching them discover their bond was so sweet, and I loved the mix of their personalities and how the story plays with role reversals.
That said, the ending kind of lost me. It felt too long at times, with too much unnecessary narration, and the world-building became a bit dull — all those Alpha scenes felt pretty pointless to me.
Anyway, I’ll leave it at 3.5 stars.
If you're reading this, stop and read this book
I have always loved traditional m/f romance both contemporary and urban fantasy. There is not very much male representation in the romance genre. There are MANY AMAZING female authors in the romance genre and i believe its because society encourages women to be in touch with their feelings, and men have trouble letting themselves feel vulnerable even on paper. That being said this book and author is a rare find. No harem BS, no one dimensional wish fullfilment fantasy. The male and female lead have depth. The dialogue is hilarious. And usually its the ordinary woman who meets the powerful man in paranormal romance, but that trope gets gender reversed in this novel in a very pleasant way. Highly recommend if you are looking for something different. Im gonna be rereading this one ALOT
I thought I might like it as the plot is unique. I was expecting a bit of gender reversal, but this was 100% gender reversal. We got this rugby player, FMC, part of the bad girls gang, the Charlotte's spiders, she rides a motorcycle, and is basically describing a cliche MMC in a bad romance high school story.
The MMC internal dialogue was very feminine; if his name was not mentioned a few times, I would have sworn this was an FMC, not a MMC thought. Same with the FMC, she was portrayed very manly.
I think this concept would have worked if the gender reversal had been done in such a way that the FMC was still a FMC but in a more dominant position, without turning into a guy with a girl's name. And the same with the MMC.
This is basically a story about a MMC with the name Charlotte and a FMC with the name John. It just doesn't work for me.
Picked this up because someone on some Reddit thread suggested it as something that feels like Regina x Rodrick ship that’s been going around; idk if I feel it quite aligns with those characters quite how I would have liked but it was enjoyable on its own merits. I’m not much of a romance reader so some of the tropes and corniness that comes along with the territory weren’t for me, and I was hesitant about bully romance, but this was a fun gender-swapped story which I can see other readers really enjoying. While the explicit scenes were well written, I was still a little icked because they were high schoolers (even if they were 18).
Also, I couldn’t take the cute nickname “Growler” seriously. I’m sure the author didn’t know this, but “growler” is sometimes vulgar slang for “vulva”, so that’s all I could imagine whenever Charlotte called Joe that :/
WOW!!!!!
As my introduction into shifter romance, this was a blast! What?! It was sooo good. I enjoyed myself so much. I wanted to give a big hug to both Charlotte and Joeseph! Mr Treadway did such a good job.
I do wish there was more spice though. Or maybe that is a me problem. I have had this complaint with my last few reads. But for the spice that was there, I absolutely enjoyed. Bully romance + My Mate = Heaven. I need more of this trope.
Was also a pleasant surprise to find out Mr Treadway is a mister. He writes so well I didn't even notice a difference and I would have been ignorant if I didn't read the acknowledgement, and I only do that for books I really love.
Now let me go look for more shifter romances. Thank you.
This would easily be a 5 star review if not for the abundant typos. I've read a multitude of shifter fated mate books, and a good number of rejected mate books. This one found a way to stand out amongst the others. Charlotte is the more dominate one, full shifter, and the bully of the MMC (Joe). It's set in high school, senior year, both are 18. Their world is one where shifters and humans coexist with full knowledge of each other. Spice was light, which I felt like fit the setting of the book and the characters. I loved how dorky, nerdy, and kind Joe was, while also finding a way to help guide/support Charlotte in a very masculine way. I really enjoyed the dynamic of their relationship, and the unique take on a familiar trope.
Wow! A wolf pack dynamic story I actually loved!
I'll be very honest when I say that the start of the story for the first 20% is the weakest part as the setup for the bullying feels rushed, and the main male characters quick acceptance of the attraction to her was strange since later on we see that he is actually very strong willed.
But overall this story had me hooked to the end, with both of the characters conflicts later on in the story being not just believable but also understandable.
AND FINALLY! A story set in a urban-fantasy world that is believable and not straight up dystopian.
Charlotte is the alpha of the local pack of mean girls. Quite literally, as they're shifters in a world where shifters live openly alongside humans. Joseph is also a werewolf, but has yet to shift. He has also been merciless bullied by Charlotter and her Spiders throughout school. All of which becomes very awkward when Charlotte and Joseph turn out to be fated mates.
Paranormal world high school bully romance where the alpha werewolf and bully is the girl and it's also written by a male author. That was enough to get me reading for something different. It turned out to be surprisingly good, and I appreciated different gender and story roles in a heterosexual romance for a change.
i usually hate bully romance but this one was definitely good. there wasn’t constant bullying through out the book so that was good. i really like the romance between joe and charlotte after they realized they were mates. i’m also appreciative that joe didn’t turn all macho macho man after he shifted i was sooo glad that didn’t happen. i wish this was set in college not high school. would have liked the epilogue of them in college or 1-2 years rather than just one month later. but other than that this book was good!
Sweet story, interesting world
This is a great romance. I've enjoyed all of this author's books and I look forward to book 2 of this series. I like the way shifters were portrayed in the story and how they relate to the world. The MCs were good and their relationship was realistic. The sex scenes were tasteful and not overdone. This was a romance book but not smut.
I binged this in 1 day. I strongly recommend reading.
It needs to be said that the bullying only lasts the first couple of chapters, and then it's Charlotte and Joe's journey towards romance and it's cute as heck! It gives me the warm fuzzies, and I even laughed out loud sometimes. It's pretty good, glad I tried it. It's a typical teenaged boy's dream but it was written for adults with spicy scenes and it was written really well - no teenaged writing here.
