Meadow Creek is about as serene as it sounds—a quiet town with a lush landscape, idyllic hiking trails, cozy cafes, and breweries. Twenty-year-old Grace works at Meadow Creek’s cozy diner. When she isn’t there, the quiet woman prefers her own company—meditating and immersing herself in nature. Despite her desire for tranquility, a heavy darkness begins hovering over her, and she finds comfort in Luca.
Luca has come to Meadow Creek to escape the grief and heartbreak of his past. Working as a farm hand, he generally avoids people, but when he meets Grace, it stirs something in him, softening his heart.
The pair quickly develop a deep friendship, and they open up to one another, revealing their vulnerabilities. When the proverbial storm becomes too scary, the friends turn to one another. But when stronger feelings emerge, will their fear of being hurt stand in the way?
“When Everyone Left but You” by Eva Dabrowska is an endearing coming-of-age book about overcoming adversity and stepping out of your comfort zone. The novel follows Grace and Luca as they experience many firsts together and navigate the uncharted waters of a burgeoning romance. They become a soothing shoulder to cry on for one another when they try to make sense of their past traumas and confront new challenges. Themes of friendship, love, and self-discovery are deftly woven through the pages of this book.
It was apparent from the get-go that Grace and Luca were good for one another. They are unlike most people their age, as they possess a rare innocence. I enjoyed witnessing their playful interactions and sweet consideration toward one another. Both were inexperienced with romantic relationships’ emotional and physical aspects, and the pair had much to learn. Between their playful banter, penchant for silly games, and thirst for adventure, readers will be drawn to the pair’s undeniable chemistry and zest for life.
The author has done an excellent job of describing the challenges young people face. For Grace, there is unrelenting pressure from her parents and society to know what she wants to do for the rest of her life and to devote all her time to being successful. Grace isn’t in a hurry to grow up and faces criticism for it. Moreover, she grapples with bouts of intense depression that leave her questioning everything. Luca is trying to put the pieces of his shattered heart back together after being mistreated by people from his past. He deeply craves the closeness and security of a meaningful relationship, but his past traumas make him hesitant. Readers will easily connect with the relatable characters.
Readers drawn to coming-of-age stories with a wholesome romance will enjoy “When Everyone Left but You.” It’s especially good for teen/young adult readers, although all ages can enjoy the tender relationship. The character development is on point, and the author highlights life’s joys and sorrows, the importance of believing in yourself and being surrounded by positive influences. Don’t miss out on this touching story.
