An utterly addictive and emotional psychological thriller filled secrets and lies from bestselling author A J McDine. Perfect for fans of Liane Moriarty, Claire McGowan and Lisa Jewell.
A J McDine is the author of twisty, character-driven psychological thrillers that explore secrets, lies and the dark side of relationships.
Before turning to fiction, she worked as a journalist and police press officer in Kent, where she lives with her husband, fellow thriller writer A J Wills, their two sons and three rescue cats.
When she’s not writing, she can usually be found with her nose in a book, attempting a 5K, or gazing out of the window thinking up new ways to get her characters into (and out of) trouble.
Her books are all standalone reads. They are (in no particular order):
The Baby The Husband Before You The Photo Everyone Has Secrets The Invite Should Have Known Better No One I Knew The Promise You Made When She Finds You
A J McDine is an author who is fairly new to U.S. markets-and I recently became acquainted with her work when I listened to her highly original, and surprising book, “The Photo”. So, when another of her books became available here, I did not hesitate to request it!
ONE PHONE CALL CAN COMPLETELY CHANGE YOUR LIFE
I love stories revolving around neighbors with juicy secrets, and this story takes place in a village of South Langley. Noah and Eve, and their 15 year old son, Joe live in a sprawling home which once served as a vicarage. And, Eve’s best friend, Lisa and her 15 year old daughter, Annie, live in a charming cottage across the street.
Joe will be turning 16 in a few days time, and he would like to have a few friends over to play Xbox. Eve isn’t keen on the idea, worried about cigarette burns on the sofa and vomit in potted plants, but she and Noah will be camped out at Lisa’s house, just a stone’s throw away, so at least they can make sure there aren’t gate crashers and that things don’t get out of control. They provide some beer and cider (* see my footnote) and head over to Lisa’s but Eve can’t shake the feeling that something terrible is going to happen.
A few hours later, she receives a frantic phone call from Joe.
They race across the street to find Annie lying on the kitchen floor, struggling to breathe.
This book was not at all what I expected as it delves much deeper than a neighborhood with juicy secrets. In fact, most of the secrets revealed aren’t any that I haven’t read before in other similar books.
Instead, it mostly deals with a drug overdose from MDMA (Ecstasy, Molly) which unlike Opioid overdoses from heroin, methadone or fentanyl cannot be reversed with naloxone. And, it deals with the fractured relationships and the fallout as Annie’s life hangs in the balance and Eve searches for the truth.
Always engaging but not always easy to read.
DO read the Prologue again, AFTER you finish the book. 😉

Thank You to Bookouture for the gifted ARC provided through NetGalley. As always, these are my candid thoughts.
This audiobook is gripping, intense, and emotional. There was one part in particular that had me sobbing. I have always appreciated a thriller that could evoke a vast range of emotions. There were twists throughout with an ending I never saw coming. This is the second book I have read by A. J. McDine and I highly recommend them both. Tasmin Kennard masterfully brings the story to life while adding a layer of intrigue and high intensity. Thank you, NetGalley and Bookouture Audio for my audiobook.
It's no secret that AJ McDine is one of my go-to authors.
This "Secrets" book recounts a parent's worst nightmare: * A teenager secures parental permission to have a house party. * A female teen attendee overdoses and is rushed to the hospital. The teen is unresponsive and her survival is uncertain.
Who gave drugs to the teens attending the party?
Who is to blame for the tragic event that happened?
This compelling, pacey, and intricately plotted story is not just a book about secrets.
Instead, it's a gripping story about parental love, blended family conflicts, spousal trust, drug abuse, and friendship.
It should be noted that this book is more of a domestic drama than a psychological thriller.
I listened to the audiobook read by Tamsin Kennard, who did an outstanding job with the narration.
Special thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Another fabulously twisted family drama and thriller from AJ McDine. I read this book in 2 sittings, which easily could have been one if I didn’t start it so late at night. As a parent it hit me close to home as what happens at this party could very easily happen. I really felt for the mother, Eve and her situation.
A 16 year olds birthday party and disaster strikes. Just like that, the lives all there and their families are changed for ever. For Eve, it is the start of her seemingly perfect life imploding. She is happy, a great husband, a clever son, the house she always dreamed of and a job she loves. But the more she tries to discover what really happened at the party, the more secrets and lies threatened to take all that away from her.
I am being deliberately vague here and I feel you just want to read this without knowing too much. This is a page turner that will draw you in and not let you go until the very last page.
Thanks so much to the author and Bookouture for my advanced copy to read. Published on October 21st.
"It's a knee jerk reaction isn't it? When a kid goes off the rails, blame the parents. We can't bloody win. Children feel they're suffocated or let to run wild. They are starved of love or spoiled rotten. We are too demanding or too lax. Too strict or too lenient. You give them everything. Let them bleed you dry and it still not enough. If they don't get to grammar school, it's your fault for not hiring a tutor . If they have anger issues it's because you lost your temper one too many times when they were toddlers. Anxious parents have anxious children. You do the best you can with the tools you have but it's still not good enough. It's never bloody good enough."
Eve seems to have the perfect and happy life. A cozy home, a loving husband and a handsome son who is the center of their world. Until... One phone call is all it took for Eve's life to implode. Like a storm ripping through a quiet street, that call upended everything. Leaving chaos in its wake. She will soon realize that her perfect life had been nothing more than an illusion. Their son Joe, is having a small party for his 16th birthday at their house while she and her husband visit a friend nearby. She received a panicked phone call from Joe asking them to go home asap. His friend Annie is on the floor unconscious after taking an ecstasy pill. Annie is rushed to the hospital and fighting for her life. Both Eve and Lisa (her bestfriend and Annie's mother) are determined to find out who gave Annie the pill. As Eve gets closer to the truth, she begins to question who she can really trust.
Fast paced, strongly emotional and engaging psychological thriller - this book presented real life problems and a nightmare situation told from Eve's POV. Cliffhangers at the end of every chapter keeps me wanting to listen more and is greatly narrated by Tamsin Kennard. The epilogue is also very clever and unexpected.
Happy publication day! (October 21, 2024) Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture Audio for the arc! 🖤
A. J. McDine returns following The Photo with her latest novel, EVERYONE HAS SECRETS. This gripping domestic suspense is about two families caught up in a tragedy where everyone is keeping dangerous, dark secrets.
The title reflects the novel's underlying theme, where each character harbors a secret that could potentially unravel their lives.
About...
Set in the village of South Langley, Noah (second marriage) and Eve seem to have the perfect life with their careers, a beautiful home, and Joe, their almost 16-year-old son. Noah is a successful businessman with a son from his previous marriage, but his past is mysterious. A loving mother, Eve is a bit overprotective due to the past. Joe is a typical teenager, rebellious yet caring.
Joe's birthday is approaching, and he wants to have some friends over without his parents. Eve is very concerned about this. From things getting out of control, drugs, alcohol, the responsibility of the teens, and possible damage to their lovely home.
Eve's best friend, Lisa, lives across the street with their fifteen-year-old daughter, Annie. Noah says things will be fine because they will be at Lisa's. Annie will attend the party as well.
However, when Joe's distressing call about Annie's crisis shatters the tranquility, all of Eve's worst fears come to life, plunging the family into a whirlwind of emotional turmoil.
Who gave Annie drugs, and where did they come from?
Now, Annie is fighting for her life, and everyone judges Eve and Noah. How did this happen? From this day forward, lives will be changed. One wrong split decision changes the trajectory of many lives with deadly consequences. There are dark secrets, and they are connected in ways you cannot imagine.
My thoughts...
This is my second book by A.J. McDine, and she definitely keeps the tension and suspense high in this emotionally charged domestic plot-driven family drama thriller. You have no idea whom to trust, who is lying, and why.
Gripping, Compelling, Suspenseful! From parental love, betrayal, revenge, trust, friendship, teen secrets, and drug abuse.
Not only does Joe have secrets, but Noah also keeps some as well. Revenge is front and center when the past connects with the present in this well-written cautionary tale.
It's not easy to read if you are a parent tasked with giving your teens some freedom while walking a fine line between being a helicopter parent who hovers too close and being a responsible parent. How can you protect your loved ones and, at the same time, hold them accountable for their actions?
The author masterfully weaves another unexpected twist at the end, leaving readers reeling and eager for more. No one is as they seem in this story, making it a compelling read that will keep you guessing until the end.
As a newcomer to A.J. McDine's work, I am thoroughly impressed and eagerly anticipate her future releases. Her ability to craft a gripping, emotionally charged narrative is truly commendable.
Audiobook...
I enjoyed listening to the audiobook narrated by the fabulous Tamsin Kennard (a favorite), who makes the characters and the story come alive for an engaging performance!

Thanks to Bookouture Audio for an advanced listening copy via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
While many will relate to this family drama, I found it to be a really slow burn. I’ve enjoyed many of her books, but this wasn’t my favorite. It was a bit predictable. I hate it when authors add that final twist which is obviously just an added irritation meant to be — one last twist. The good news is that I appear to be an outlier. I’m pretty generous with my reviews so I hate to be negative. Maybe it’s just my mood, and I would definitely recommend her books. This one just wasn’t for me.
Definitely a gripping story, though I wouldn't classify it as a thriller. A house party for teenagers goes terribly wrong when one of the attendees takes drugs and becomes unresponsive. The parents rush back from where they are to try to make sense of the situation and find out: who gave her the drugs and will she make it? More of a domestic drama as the attendee in question is the god-daughter of the main character. A good story, well written and well narrated.
Thank you to NetGalley, Bookoture, and the author for my advance copy of this audiobook
Oh hallo!! This is shouting best seller! I was completely engrossed in the story from start to finish. A thoroughly gripping domestic thriller. McDine has done it again, and I was wrong both times I guessed the ending.
Quite harrowing in places, the author presents to us best friends, who’ve brought their children up together, the type of friends who are like family, everything changes though, when Lisa’s daughter collapses after taking ecstasy at a house party to celebrate Eve’s son’s 16th birthday. Annie’s life hangs in the balance, and Eve is determined to find out who gave the drugs to the girl. I love the way McDine presents a situation to you in a way that really makes you question everyone, even yourself.
I liked and loathed Eve, she was a great friend, a good mum and wife but she was snobbish and judgmental and she annoyed me at various points, however I could also relate to her and the dilemmas she faces and decisions she makes.
The narration by Tamsin Kennard was excellent.
An easy 4 ⭐️
Thank you to Bookouture audio and NetGalley for this ELC.
Narrated by Tamsin Kennard Presented by Bookouture Audio
Not quite the scandalous read I was expecting - more like a mother's trials and tribulations.
Eve has a 'perfect life', which changes when her best friend's daughter winds up in a coma after attending a birthday party for Eve's son, Joe.
I was expecting the classic trope of terrible rich people suddenly discovering their perfect lives aren't actually perfect, and while that is kind of the case, it was lacking drama and a little too predictable.
I didn't love or loathe any of the characters, really, which meant I wasn't fully committed to the story, and I thought some parts just seemed a bit too unbelievable - like it was trying to wring drama out of plot points that didn't really have any.
A lot of the story focuses on Eve's trials as a mother - how she has to stick up for her family, and look after her son in the process.
I do think mothers may find this resonates and so will enjoy it more thoroughly for that.
The narration was pretty decent, and distinguished each voice well. They played the part of Eve really well.
Wasn't quite enough for me to really lose myself to it, but I can see how this would be a thrilling read for others.
This book was such an addictive read! From the very beginning, I was drawn into the lives of the Griffiths and the charming, close-knit community of South Langley. The village setting felt so cozy and familiar, which made the darker, unexpected twists even more chilling. When Annie is found in Eve’s kitchen, clinging to life, the suspense kicked in, and I couldn’t stop flipping pages.
The characters are so real—flawed, sometimes frustrating, but somehow still relatable. I found myself really invested in Eve, her fierce determination to uncover the truth, and the growing sense of betrayal as secrets between her, her best friend, husband, and son start to unravel. No one in this story is blameless, and that just kept me guessing.
The twists were perfectly timed, and I loved the tension as new revelations threw everything into question. Listening to this as an audiobook made it even better! Tasmin Kennard’s narration added so much depth; she captured the raw emotions and kept me on edge through every chapter.
If you love a mystery that keeps you hooked until the last page, with characters you’ll connect with despite their flaws, this one’s a must-read. Perfect for curling up with on a chilly night—it’s packed with suspense and that cozy-but-creepy vibe!
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the audio ARC in exchange for my honest opinion.
A J McDine’s latest thriller, ‘Everyone Has Secrets’ is a masterclass in suspenseful storytelling. It’s a whirlwind of twists and turns. This book expertly crafts a narrative that kept me guessing, constantly questioning characters motives and unravelling layers of deception. From the outset, the pace is relentless, which drew me into a world where secrets are kept and trust is rare. The intricate plot unfolds with each revelation adding another layer of intrigue and leaving you desperate to uncover the truth. The characters are deeply flawed and complex, their motivations shrouded in a fog of secrecy. A J McDine masterfully uses the element of surprise which kept me fully engaged. The unexpected turns, the sudden revelations, and the ever-present sense of unease make this book a real page-turner. It was impossible to put down. If you're looking for a thriller that will keep you on the edge of your seat, "Everyone Has Secrets" is a must-read. Prepare yourself for a captivating journey filled with suspense, intrigue, and the thrilling realization that everyone, indeed, has secrets. Thank you A J McDine, NetGalley and Bookouture for an early copy.
Eve lives with her husband and 16-year-old son in the small village of South Langley. Her best friend Lisa lives right across the street with her teenage daughter Annie. The women share a special bond, and their children, having grown up so closely together, share one as well.
Despite some misgivings, Eve allows her son to have a small party for his birthday, and at her husband's insistence that it was time to cut the apron strings, she grudgingly agrees to spend the evening at Lisa's. But when she gets a panicked phone call from her son saying something is wrong with Annie, she berates herself for not following her instincts. But what she finds when she arrives home is worse than she ever could have imagined.
As she attempts to pick up the pieces of her shattered life, more disturbing news is waiting. Someone isn't telling the truth about what happened that night, and putting the pieces together is not as easy as you would expect.
This was so much more than a domestic thriller. It was a sobering reminder that if you're a parent, you must accept two horrible truths: first, you can never really protect your child the way that you wish, and two; no matter how close your relationship is with them, you can never really know them in the way you tell yourself so vehemently that you do. Thank you so much to Bookouture and the author for this early copy. At the time this review was written, this book was expected to publish October 21, 2024.
Omg gripping this had me hooked from the blurb. The narration was spot on and high quality. The chapters were short and kept my attention as the increasing number of secrets were revealed from multiple characters. I loved the premise that any parent would do anything to help their child but as the truth was revealed the lines were blurred This dealt with lots of complex issuses and emotions in a realistic easy to flow and care format. The pov made it so real. The final epilogue gave me chills as it was a final twist that left scope for other stories. Listening to this I was so engrossed the various characters and side secrets thst contributed to the final reveal were so captivating. I loved the misdirection and often went down the same thought process as the characters. I would highly recommend this but be warned the skillful writing and perfect narration in this realistic story may leave you feeling it's too close to the stories in the media and also you might look differently at that kid with the new trainers. Thank you so much netgallery and publisher and author and narrator
Eve her husband Noah and their sone Joe are living a very happy life in a great neighbourhood. Joe goes to private school and is the apple of Eve’s eye. Joe’s sixteenth birthday is just a few days away and Eve and Noah allow Joe to invite some friends over for the evening to celebrate. Eve has always wrapped Joe in cotton wool and is worried something is going to go wrong, Noah believes all will be fine and they agree the kids can have the house until midnight and they will just be a few streets at Eve’s best friend’s house.
But a couple of hours into the evening Eve gets a call from Joe that will change everyone’s lives. Friendships and loyalties will be tested as the repercussions of this night become clearer. A mother’s love is like no other and after what occurs Eve and Noah are in for the fight of their lives to protect their son. Eve then begins her own investigations as to what has happened and who is responsible.
This was a very enjoyable domestic thriller that will make you not want to put the book down. Shocks and surprises keep the story moving along at a fast pace until answers begin to be provided. Another very good book by this author that I highly recommend.
Thank you to Netgalley, the author and publisher for an advanced copy of the book, all opinions expressed are my own.
Eve lives the perfect life in a small countryside village, with her perfect family and friends. When suddenly one night, something happens to turn her perfect life upside down. Soon Eve’s life is spiralling out of control and she is determined to find out what really happened that night. What secrets will she discover along the way?
This is my third book by this author and my third 5 star rating. I knew I had to read this straight away as soon as I saw it! Although this story seemed to follow a more traditional plot than the previous books I have read, it still managed to keep me enthralled and needing to keep turning the pages. I really enjoy the author’s writing style and she has proved that whatever she writes, it will stand out and capture attention. What I really liked about this one was that, although primarily a domestic thriller, there were some real emotional moments that evoked a range of emotions from me. I think when an author can do this it proves what a talented author they are.
The story is told by Eve, and although sometimes her personality traits were irritating, I could relate to parts of her and she felt authentic. The side characters were also done well. I really enjoyed discovering the secrets and the pacing was good; I kept telling myself one more chapter and before I knew it I had read the lot.
This is definitely another immensely entertaining read, full of drama and a surprising but satisfying epilogue. Please hurry up with the next one! Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for this copy in return for an honest review.
Everyone has secrets... I could not agree more. It's not a bad thing though as long as you don't hurt anyone or don't endanger anybody.
It's also less distinctive when you talk about people you don't see very often. After all people do not have to share every tidbit of their life with you if they don't want too. It's a different matter when it concerns people you live under the same roof with and who you see every day.
Adults can be very good actors and when teenagers have mood swings, it's easy to blame the hormones although some of them would win an Oscar too.
If I have to name a favorite character it would be Bobbi-Jo. She is lovely and cute and she stole my heart.
This is a very enjoyable psychological thriller with lots of emotions involved. It really pulled my heartstrings for some of them and where others are concerned, I really do hope they will get what they deserve rather sooner than later.
I am a huge fan of this author's writing style and storytelling. I can'wt wait until the next books lands on my lap. 5 big stars from me.
Decent page turner although I clocked the culprit from the get go and found Eve to be pretty insufferable lmao. The epilogue also didn’t really do it for me but alas still torn through in a day so 🤓
Eve and her husband Noah are throwing their son Joe a 16th birthday party, and Eve wants Joe to invite her best friend Lisa's daughter, Annie. While the kids are partying, Eve and Noah are just across the way at Lisa's until they get that phone call that something terrible happened to Annie. Who can Eve trust and who is tellin the truth. All the neighbors have juicy secrets and don't want them out. This is definitely a page turner, and I am so proud of Eve for wantin to find out what really happened at the party and who is lying and tryin to get all the hidden secrets out and can she really trust everyone she loves. This book is really good with lots of twists and turns so many.
I was given a copy by the publisher via NetGalley (Thank U), and all my opinions are my own.
Big thanks to Bookouture for a copy on Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. Everyone Has Secrets is an intriguing family drama and as the title says the characters have secrets. An evening tragedy changes the lives of many, forever….. Noah and Eve and their teenage son, Joe live a relatively normal life. Eve is a maths teacher at a prestigious girls school, Noah owns his own recruitment business and Joe is getting ready for exams. They live in a beautiful renovated church home in a quiet neighbourhood. Joe is about to turn 16 and wants a few friends over to celebrate. So Eve and Noah join best friend Lisa across the road to give them some space. A few hours later, a distressed phone call states there’s been an accident. Someone is on the floor fighting for their life….. A suburban melodrama with a cast of suspects, a set of colourful secrets, a skelton in many closets, a twisted mystery and that unexpected ending. Who is lying and who is telling the truth in this satisfying and entertaining well thought out tale.
I really enjoyed this book! I look forward to reading other books by this author. There were so many twists in this book I didn’t see coming. But then again I rarely can figure books out. I would definitely recommend this book
I want to keep this review fairly vague because this is one of those thrillers you’ll want to experience with as few spoilers as possible.
AJ McDine delivers another brilliantly twisted family drama that grabs hold and doesn’t let go until the very last page.
The story centers around a 16-year-old’s birthday party, where one disastrous moment changes the lives of everyone there. For Eve, this event is the beginning of the end for her seemingly perfect life. She has it all—a loving husband, a bright son, her dream home, and a fulfilling job. But as she searches for the truth of what happened that night, layers of secrets and lies emerge, threatening to destroy everything she’s worked so hard for.
Being a parent in this day and age, I found the events of the party has solidified my assertion to always be viewed as the "overly worried" mom my daughter's claim I am!
A J McDine never fails to entertain! This book definitely kept me reading, all night. The story was great, heartbreaking and something parents of teens should read. In my opinion, it really isn't a thriller, it seemed more like a family/friends drama. But with very good information. The last chapter, hinted at thriller....maybe we haven't seen the last of the Griffiths? Thanks to netgalley, bookouture and AJ McDine for the chance to read this ARC for a fair review.
When I first started this, I thought it was going to be another typical domestic thriller. And thankfully I was wrong! Great plot, mystery, and characters! And by great characters, I mean development, I didn't necessarily like them.
This is a must read for those who love page turning thrillers, or those who can't wait to get to the end of their audiobook so they put it at 1.5 speed to just get to the end.
I honestly did not know who to trust and what was going to happen next! And that is difficult to find these days. Books often feel one-note and shallow, but this book delivered on plot, character development, and a good mystery.
Definitely add this to you TBR list! You won't be disappointed!
Thank you so much to netgalley and Bookouture Audio for the advanced audio copy of this book. All my opinions are my own.
'Everyone Has Secrets' discusses some topics that may upset some readers or may not be suitable for others. I like to point this out ahead of time in my reviews so you can judge if this book is for you or not. In this book A J McDine discusses/includes drugs and an overdose
OMG AJ, Where On Earth have you been hiding all of my life?!?! How have I never read any of your books so far when you are this blooming amazing?!! Well, I am just so glad I have resolved that problem, and that now while I am waiting for your next book, which is guaranteed to be amazing even if it is just a quarter as good as this book, I can read your previous books while I am waiting!
OMG!!! SHUT THE FRONT DOOR!!! WHAT HAVE I JUST READ!?!?!? A J McDine you are a writing legend!!!
Wow!!! Well fair play the first thing I must say is congratulations to A J McDine on an absolutely HUGE success!! Absolutely blooming fantastic!! I never did work out what was happening and that is quite a feat considering it is quite hard to shock me now that I have read so many suspense and thrillers yet I never did see any of those mind blowing twists coming!! Anyway on with my review....
This book is fantastically written with vivid descriptions that absolutely grip the readers attention and puts them right in the middle of it all feeling the hair raise on your arms and feeling the sweat run down your back. The cover is eye catching and if that doesn't make you want to get absorbed into this page turner the synopsis definitely will!!!
An absolutely fantastic page turner by this brilliant new author to me and I am so glad I have discovered her so I can get stuck into her previous books!! This book has got to be one of the most heart racing books I've read in a long time!!! It had me hook, line and sinker from the first page and I could not put it down!!! Every time I said one more chapter it ended on a cliff-hanger and I just had to know what was going on!!! If you are going to read this then clear your day because it is truly unputdownable. I started this yesterday afternoon and finished it at approx. 2am, I read it in one sitting and although I'm knackered today it was 1000000% worth it!!! I listened to the audiobook version of this book which is narrated by Tamsin Kennard who does an absolutely amazing job of narrating this gripping storyline but more on that soon. In this fantastic book we meet Eve Griffiths who lives with her husband Noah and 15 year old son Joe. They have a good life in a good neighbourhood. Eve is a typical helicopter parent even when her son is a teenager!! Joe is about to turn 16 and after (very reluctantly) agreeing Eve allows him to have a few friends over at their house to celebrate while Eve and Noah go to their friend Lisa's home until midnight. Lisa's daughter Annie, who is also Eve's Goddaughter, will also be going to celebrate Joe's birthday. When Eve gets a panicked phone call from Joe a few hours into the celebrations saying that something had happened to Annie. Eve, Noah and Lisa run across to Lisa's home and discover Annie laying on the kitchen floor rigid, hot and unconscious with a faint pulse. An ambulance is called and the lives of Eve, Noah, Joe, Lisa and Annie will never be the same again. With Lisa refusing to allow Eve to see Annie in the hospital and blaming Joe and a community they have lived in for 16 years turning on them and telling them to return to London can things get any worse? With Eve determined to find out what really happened at the party, her job at risk and Noah keeping secrets will Eve uncover the secrets that everybody seems to be hiding?? Grab your copy of this fantastic page turner to find out for yourselves and I can promise that you will not regret it!!! With a storyline ram packed with friendship, community, secrets, suspense, lies, tension, heartache, drama, shocks and much, much more what on Earth are you waiting for?? With an explosive ending that I was not expecting it makes a nice change as after reading hundreds of crime and psychological thrillers it is getting harder and harder to surprise me s a MASSIVE well done AJ!!! A true page turner, this book is absolutely compelling with an addictive storyline that kept me guessing throughout. I was continuously questioning who was doing what!! AJ's fantastic, emotive and evocative writing talents and Tamsin's amazing narration together really do ensure the reader is transported into the storyline with the characters and events coming to life around them where they can see and feel absolutely everything that Eve is seeing and feeling. Congratulations AJ on writing and Tamsin for narrating an absolutely brilliant and unique storyline that I just could not put down!! I cannot wait to get stuck in to your previous and future books!!
Clear your schedules and get ready to be sucked into an addictive, page turning domestic thriller by an extremely talented author!!!
This is one of the few books that I have listened 100% on Audiobook. If I listen to a book on audiobook I usually also read the physical book between but I listened to the whole book and I was impressed! I must say a HUGE congratulations to the narrator Tamsin Kennard who yet again has done an absolutely amazing job bringing this story and the characters to life. I would listen to it and this book in the car and while walking at any opportunity. I'm not only looking forward to reading more books by the epic AJ McDine but also to listening to more books narrated by Tamsin!
The characters were very realistic and well rounded and again their personalities reflected the storyline and how they would act, etc perfectly. AJ's fantastic and emotive descriptions really brings the characters to life along with Tamsin's absolutely brilliant narration which really portrays Lisa's emotions throughout. The storyline is extremely scarily realistic in regards to drugs, pressure and children (younger and older) and how one thing can have such a butterfly affect on so many people. I was completely invested in all of the characters and my heart went out to several of them. I was also trying to work out who was saying the truth and who was lying, and what they were lying about but I never managed to work it out myself so well done AJ!! Each of the characters were well developed, unique and thanks to Amanda's fantastic evocative writing skills and Tamsin's brilliant narrative they all came to life before my eyes. They all had their own flaws, strengths and weaknesses. That is all I will say as I don't want to run the risk of dropping any hints or spoilers. However, whether you love or hate these characters, they all have their own strong unique personalities and they all bring the story to life playing their roles perfectly.
An absolutely HUGE SUCCESS by this extremely talented author. This is EXACTLY why I would like to welcome you to my favourite authors club A J McDine and here is to your next success 🥂!!
Overall a page turning addictive domestic thriller that will have your heart racing and will blow your mind with the explosive twists.
I am a HUGE fan of this author, but this book fell massively below my expectations. It wasn't really a psychological thriller with the jaw dropping twists I am used to, more of a family drama, focused on the loss of a loved one, financial pressures and the dangers of drug use.
The main character, Eve, has the perfect life with her husband and their son, Joe. When Joe has a party for his 16th birthday and Eve's goddaughter, Annie, is rushed to hospital in a coma after taking drugs, Eve's world comes crashing down around her and the whole community shuns her, including her best friend and Annie's mother, Lisa.
The characters were likeable and relatable, but the storyline was fairly predictable. I felt annoyed that there was no accountability for anyone's actions; the drug dealer and even the teacher who was grooming a student were left free to carry on.
I feel terrible giving this a low rating, but I am always honest in my reviews. I love this author's writing and I can't wait to see what she comes up with next, but sadly this one wasn't for me.
2 ⭐️ Thanks to Netgalley, A J McDine and Bookouture, for an ARC in return for an honest review.
