Mercy Thompson is a shapeshifter, and while she was raised by werewolves, she can never be one of them, especially after the pack ran her off for having a forbidden love affair. So she’s turned her talent for fixing cars into a business and now runs a one-woman mechanic shop in the Tri-Cities area of Washington State.

But Mercy’s two worlds are colliding. A half-starved teenage boy arrives at her shop looking for work, only to reveal that he’s a newly changed werewolf—on the run and desperately trying to control his animal instincts. Mercy asks her neighbor Adam Hauptman, the Alpha of the local werewolf pack, for assistance.

But Mercy’s act of kindness has unexpected consequences that leave her no choice but to seek help from those she once considered family—the werewolves who abandoned her...

This book has all the elements of the popular paranormal romance series that were the rage 20 years ago, and while I think there is room for improvement, I know I will love this series.

Mercy is a strong, no-nonsense female lead who can take care of herself, but also knows how to rely on others. She is not “too badass” and does not think herself undefeatable, as is sadly the case with heroines lately. She is a mature lead in her early thirties instead of being a 17-year-old. I love that Mercy is older; it makes it easier for me to relate to her and her life, and it takes away all the potential teenage drama/immature romantic drama that I dislike. Mercy is independent, clever, and very ressourceful, she also finds herself in the middle of the paranormal community, thanks to her work as a mechanic: she is friends with werewolves, vampires, and faes, and knows how to interact with them and navigate their politics. The fact that she is a walker, and probably the last of her kind, is also different and interesting.

The pace is good, and this is a quick read. The plot was good, too, until everything was explained, and I ended up being disappointed.

There is no romance yet, which is good, because it also means no insta-love. I like how those “older” series didn’t rush into the romance right from the start, but took the time to build it over a few books. There are two potential love interests at the end of this book, but I am pretty sure I know which one will be the one Mercy takes an interest in. The thing is, I don’t buy it, yet. Adam and Mercy are neighbors, and it’s been told from the start that they have a kind of rivalry and love to antagonize each other, but I also am to believe that they are attracted to each other. I do believe that it could be possible, but I didn’t really see it in this book. I saw Mercy helping Adam and caring about him as a friend, but I didn’t feel that she was attracted to him or would be open to “more” with him. Honestly, I felt more chemistry between Mercy and Stephen, even though it is 100% clear that there are no romantic feelings between them.

That being said, I do like Adam. Just like in the 2010s PNR series, he is a strong leader, stubborn but caring, fiercely protective of his own, but kind and one of the good alphas. I can’t find anything to reproach him, really, but while Iike him, I am not in love with him, yet. Don’t get me wrong, I am rooting for him, because who wouldn’t want to have a strong, confident alpha with a good sense of humour and who respects you and does not see you as lesser because you are not a wolf as their love interest? I just know that he has more to offer than what we saw in this first book, and I know that the more I see of him, the more I will love him. Seeing him act as a father with Jesse is also hot and makes him sexy in a different way. That’s probably because I have kids, but seeing him as a hot dad is much sexier than reading about his six-pack abs.

I love all the realistic details included in the writing. Things like car details that a mechanic should know, or how Mercy can’t hear for a few seconds after shooting a gun because it’s loud. It’s all those little things that made the writing more immersive and the story more believable.

I do feel that this series has a lot to offer, and that it will get better with each book. I love Mercy and some of her friends already, and I can’t wait to fall in love with the rest of the characters. I also have a feeling that, just like the Kate Daniels series, the books will get better as the series progresses because I will get more attached to everyone, and the romance will eventually take more room, too.

On a side note, what’s with the cover? It is beautiful, but this is so not representative of how Mercy dresses. 😅

When a coyote shifter Volkswagon mechanic takes in a homeless new werewolf teen, her goal of keeping her head down and minding her own business in the local Tri-Cities supernatural community is blown to bits. This is not my first time reuniting with the first book in the Mercy Thompson urban fantasy world, but it was my first encounter with the Graphic Audio full cast edition which took a good story and made it even better.

Mercy had a unique upbringing and is a unique individual. She's young, but she has hidden depths that come out as the story progresses. She considers herself low in the supernatural power hierarchy, but it was fun seeing this underdog-erm under coyote find a way to get it done. Much of the story is introducing Patricia Briggs' urban fantasy world, but this does not bury the exciting story crescendoing to an action-packed climax.

Getting the sound effects, music, and full cast dramatization was sensational and I liked the voices chosen. I had to laugh at how Stefan was voice- very different from the one I had in my head for him.

All in all, a fun and exciting outing making me excited to listen in as Graphic Audio continues to release the rest of the series.

I loved the graphic audiobook!
I could imagine the word and all the people in it. At the moment only two graphic audiobooks are out. The third will be available at my retailer at the beginning of December. I'm looking forward to listen to it and will re listen to the first two books.

Edit March 2025:
I still love this graphicaudio production. I'm currently rereading them, because I have some unread audiobook of this series and want to listen to them.

Moon Called was a fantastic read about a woman who gets drawn into the werewolf drama around her.

I previously read and enjoyed Moon Called, as well as the rest of the series, so when I saw there was a dramatized adaptation of the book, I knew I wanted to check it out. As this is a new format for me, this review will just focus on the dramatized adaptation part of the book. My thoughts on the book itself can be found here in my original review.

The voice cast in the book was great and I thought they did a good job portraying the various characters. The full cast helped with differentiating the characters which I appreciated as I sometimes have an issue keeping the characters straight in normal audiobooks with only one narrator. I really liked the actress who voices Mercy as I feel like she portrayed the various aspects of Mercy's personality well. Adam's voice was a bit different than what I imagined it would be but I was able to get used to it. I thought the actor who voiced Warren did a great job capturing the southern charm he has.

The sound effects included in this are really what sets this apart from regular audiobooks. They helped immerse me in the story and it felt like more of an experience rather than simply listening to a book. From the whooshing of other cars passing Mercy while she drives to her tools clanking on the engine while she works, the production team did a great job enhancing each scene. The only sound effects I felt were a bit awkward were a kiss and the sound of the characters running as it had an odd tinny effect.

Overall this was an excellent way to experience the story of Moon Called in a new way and I would highly recommend it for fans of the original book.

There is something about a well-produced dramatized audiobook that can completely transform a story, and GraphicAudio’s adaptation of Moon Called by Patricia Briggs is a perfect example. I went into this expecting an entertaining revisit to an urban fantasy I already knew, but I came away enjoying the production even more than the original book itself. The full cast, atmospheric sound effects, and cinematic approach made this story feel more immediate, immersive, and alive. Sometimes a different format is exactly what a story needs, and this one absolutely benefited from the transformation.

The story follows Mercy Thompson, a shapeshifter known as a walker who can take the form of a coyote. Raised among werewolves but never truly belonging to their world, Mercy has built an independent life as a mechanic in the Tri-Cities of Washington. Her carefully maintained normalcy begins to unravel when a young, newly turned werewolf named Mac arrives at her shop looking for work. Recognizing that he is vulnerable and struggling to control his instincts, Mercy turns to her neighbor Adam Hauptman, the intimidating Alpha of the local werewolf pack, for help.

What begins as an act of kindness quickly spirals into something far more dangerous. As violence and supernatural politics collide, Mercy finds herself pulled back toward the werewolf community that once rejected her. The mystery gives the story momentum while allowing Briggs to explore loyalty, belonging, prejudice, and the complicated relationships between humans and the supernatural.

Mercy is easily the heart of the story. She is independent, resourceful, sarcastic, and refreshingly capable without needing to prove herself constantly. I love that she occupies a space between supernatural worlds, never entirely fitting into any of them. Adam brings an imposing presence and plenty of tension, while Samuel, Mercy’s former love, adds another layer of emotional history. Together, these characters create an engaging dynamic that makes the supernatural conflicts feel personal rather than simply plot-driven.

The biggest success here is the cast. Khaya Fraites is fantastic as Mercy, capturing her dry humor, stubbornness, vulnerability, and quick-thinking nature with a performance that feels wonderfully natural. She gives Mercy a distinct personality and makes it easy to understand why she is such a compelling protagonist. Gregory Linington brings a commanding presence to Adam, while Christopher McLinden and Rayner Gabriel contribute to the richness of the supporting cast.

I also appreciated the brief appearance by Gabriel Michael. Even in a smaller role, his presence adds to the overall enjoyment of an already strong ensemble.

The sound design deserves just as much praise. The environmental effects, music, and layered performances make the setting feel tangible, from Mercy's everyday life in her garage to the more threatening supernatural encounters. Rather than simply listening to someone narrate events, I felt immersed in the scenes themselves. The format gives conversations greater energy and helps distinguish the characters without requiring me to work as hard to keep track of everyone.

Honestly, I liked this better than the book itself. That is not to say the original story lacks merit, but the dramatized adaptation brings out qualities that worked particularly well for me. The pacing feels engaging, the characters become more vivid, and the atmosphere adds another dimension to the world Briggs created.

GraphicAudio has made Moon Called feel like an experience rather than just a story being told. With excellent vocal performances, especially from Khaya Fraites, and production that complements the material instead of overwhelming it, this is a format I would happily return to. For me, this adaptation is the superior way to experience Mercy Thompson’s introduction, and I am genuinely excited to hear more of the series.

What a wild ride, I love a good plot and this had it! Mysteries and vampires, wolf shifters and witches and a coyote shifter…. What else is going to happen to Mercedes Thompson??? I’m pumped to start book two with Graphic Audio! Two alpha male wolves and a single coyote female…. I sense romance aplenty!

Moon Called Dramatized Adaptation (Mercy Thompson #1) by Patricia Briggs Relisten: Yes. I listened the the Graphic Audio version just a few months ago but the second book in the series released so yeah, I had to relisten. Not much else to add.

Original: I have to admit, Graphic Audio does a great job adapting and presenting books. I thoroughly enjoy MOON CALLED the first time I read it (or listened to it...it's been awhile and I've forgotten...) and this version did not disappoint. I'm glad that it appears GA is working to get all the Mercy Thompson books into this format as BLOOD BOUND (#2) appears in Audible as a pre-order. I like Mercy and the others in her world though I admit I dropped off the series a few newer releases back. Not sure why, other than other books caught my attention. Anyway, I'm happy to be back in Mercy's world for a visit. Patricia has a way with words and her version of the world is both well-done and intriguing. The series has been around long enough that most UF fans have already glommed onto it. If you haven't, you should give it a try and enjoy the "movie in your mind."™ (Which is probably a registered trademark or something so all credit to Graphic Audio for the advertising slogan.)

I started it on a whim, thinking it might be fun, especially since it's by Graphic Audio.
Yes, I was right. This is exactly what you'd expect out of an urban fantasy setting: magic mixed with 21st century. The Dramatized Adaption made me think of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and I realized this would be a tv series I would watch and re-watch.
The series follows Mercy Thompson, a mechanic and shifter and her life around different packs of werewolves and her select clientele of supernatural creatures. The love interest is, of course, an alpha werewolf. I am not so keen on all the male-female vocabulary, which feels outdated and a product of the late 2000's and early 2010s.
The entertainment value is still there, especially in this GraphicAudio format. I highly recommend this series in GraphicAudio format as it really does make it feel like an episode of Supernatural or Buffy the Vampire Slayer. The plot is quite simple and straight-forward, a bit of a murder mystery. There is a large cast of characters, but as each character has a different voice actor, it is incredibly easy to follow along who is who and who did what.
Mercy Thompson is a very interesting character and an equally interesting series that I have been eyeing for a while. As of volume one, I'd recommend it.

One of my favorite series just had its first book released by Graphic Audio, so of course I had to check it out. My only other experience with GA are The Empyrean books, and that was not very impressive. This was good though! Not excellent, but good! Adam sounded like a grumpy old man, and not at all how he's described in the books, and Zee sounds too young, but other than that this was a fun experience and I will definitely listen to the next book when it's released in October.

If you haven't picked up the Mercy Thompson series yet... Do it!

Also, five stars given to the story because I've loved it for like 16 years. The GA gets a 3.75.

I really don't want to rate this because while I loved the story itself, I have re read it at least three times and just now going through them all with normal audio.

I could not stand this dramatized edition. The voices made me wince and the back ground noises made me cringe even harder.

I prefer the normal audio to this.

5⭐️ for the book but I am still unsure about the narration. Maybe I'm just used to Lorelei King's narration but I didn't love some of the characters voices

Five stars. What an absolutely incredible introduction to the Mercy Thompson world.

I went into Moon Called expecting urban fantasy with werewolves and chaos, but the GraphicAudio version made it feel like I was dropped directly into Mercy’s garage with engines humming, wolves growling in the distance, and trouble kicking the door down every five minutes.

Mercy is such a strong main character. She’s sarcastic, stubborn, capable, and somehow manages to survive being surrounded by creatures who could literally rip her apart. I loved that she doesn’t feel overpowered either — she survives because she’s smart, adaptable, and refuses to back down.

The GraphicAudio cast absolutely nailed it. The sound effects, music, and full cast made everything feel cinematic without being overwhelming. The tense scenes actually felt tense, and the quieter moments still carried so much emotion. It honestly felt more like watching a supernatural TV show in my head than listening to an audiobook.

I also really loved how the worldbuilding was introduced naturally. You learn about the werewolves, fae, vampires, and Mercy’s history without it feeling like a giant information dump. By the end, I was already attached to the characters and desperate to continue the series.

If you want an urban fantasy series with danger, humour, found family vibes, supernatural politics, and a heroine who can hold her own even when surrounded by monsters, Moon Called is such a good place to start.

Now excuse me while I immediately continue the series because I am emotionally invested already.

⭐️⭐️⭐️.5 🎧

Went in blind on this book and series but urban fantasies are usually up my alley. RE: Storyline - I enjoyed it enough and enjoyed the world-building/societal/political overview of the world. I liked hearing about skin walkers too but wanted to know more and I felt craving a bit more about Mercy’s history and upbringing, like what we were told wasn’t quite enough to satisfy me. I’m curious enough to move forward with the series, though hoping to make more of an emotional connection with the characters (and curious to see which way Mercy’s heart will ring true in the end).

While I enjoyed the graphic audio version, there were a few things I would have liked to have seen different. Some of the sound effects were just off, ill-timed, overpowering and not congruent (like the sound of a metal blade crashing - when it landed on a bed!!)… I found the sound fluctuated a lot when Khaya Fraites read passages.

While I love Khaya as a narrator, I had a harder time connecting her to this character….also I’ve listened to a lot of GA versions so my head was like oh there’s so and so lol - but I also couldn’t connect with Adam’s narrator and Stefan.

Moon Called is the perfect start to the Mercy Thompson series—fast-paced, thrilling, and full of heart. Mercy is a sharp, witty, and fiercely independent heroine you can’t help but root for. The mystery kept me hooked, the worldbuilding is seamless, and the mix of action, danger, and humor makes it impossible to put down.

What makes this even better is experiencing it through GraphicAudio. The voices, sound effects, and immersive production breathe new life into a story I already love. Mercy’s world feels more vivid than ever, and it’s like stepping straight into the Tri-Cities alongside her.

This is one of my all-time favorite series, and I’m beyond excited that it’s being brought to life in GraphicAudio. For fans of urban fantasy, strong heroines, and stories that stay with you long after the last page, this is a must.

The story itself was already a super clever and refreshing take on urban fantasy politics, but the GraphicAudio production takes it to another level.

While I originally gave the print/standard book a 3.5-star rating, the full-cast dramatization easily added half a star for me. Hearing distinct voices for Mercy, Adam, and the rest of the pack, combined with subtle ambient sound effects, made the pacing feel tighter and the world-building so much richer. It felt like watching a movie in my head. Highly recommend this audio format if you want an extra layer of immersion!

I listened to this book as a graphic audio adaptation. It was done well. It was a new and different take on the werewolf storyline. I thought the characters were interesting and the storyline was entertaining. I did struggle a bit keeping the supporting characters straight especially as the mystery was solved. I think this would be less of an issue if reading the book. But overall I like the series and will listen to the next book, again on graphic audio.

This is a cute way to re-visit after all these years. The male narrators are kinda meh, half of them (adam included) sound like 50+ and gruff which is a bit odd in comparison to Mercys youthful light voice, but I love Mercys narrator (Khaya Fraites). I think she fits her personality.
