Lucky Break

Rate this book
When a spate of bad luck upends her life, Eliza moves to a charming—and mysterious—Midwestern lake town, where she just might find herself while trying to find the truth.

Eliza has always had a plan—until her meticulously plotted life implodes, and her engagement falls apart. At thirty-two she suddenly finds herself second-guessing the picture-perfect future she'd always envisioned, one that included raising 2.5 children near her tight-knit Italian family in San Francisco.

Then she is offered the chance to start over in Juneberry Lake, a small Midwestern town eager to lure remote workers to their picturesque community. Shocking everyone, including herself, she packs up her apartment and buys a lake house sight unseen.

Juneberry Lake is as delightful as it looked in the pictures. And the pictures didn’t even include Joel, a fellow new arrival who works alongside her every day in an adorable coffee shop. But if Eliza is hoping to spy her uncertain future in the shimmering waters of Juneberry Lake, she’ll find herself out of luck. Because her friendly Midwestern neighbors are keeping a marvelous secret—one that will help Eliza see that her recent spate of bad luck was never her fault…and that the tide can turn when you least expect it.

What to love….
- cozy small town
- low stakes mystery
- romantic subplot
- found family
- animal companions
- LGBTQIA+/physical disability (wheelchair) side characters
- fertility struggle representation

What I didn’t love…
- the stakes were very very low for this mystery, which may work for some but I felt a bit let down at the big reveal
- I wanted the romance to be more front and center and was a bit let down but this could be a plus for those who like less romance

Overall there was nothing particularly wrong with this book but personally I was a bit bored. I like my mystery stakes a little higher and my plot to move a little faster.

The cover for Lucky Break by Jaclyn Westlake was what initially drew to the novel. Then I read the synopsis and knew I had to read it. I love a book where a character moves to a brand-new place to start over and reinvent themselves after their life takes a turn for the worst and that’s exactly what we get here. I love the aspect of the mysterious town, the quirky townspeople, and the beautiful descriptions of the setting. If I were to move to reinvent myself, I’d choose a place like this just as our FMC Eliza does. But this isn’t a story of just moving on with her life. This story encompasses a mystery, a new romance with a man who is also new to the area, and a found family trope that I adored. If you’re a fan of this and enjoy a diverse set of characters, then I recommend checking it out. Just be warned this isn’t a romance novel. I’d say it’s more of a women’s fiction with a romance subplot. I know not a lot of romance readers like this and want a full-on romance but if you’re like me and enjoy women’s fiction then you’ll love this one! It’s a great read for the summer.

Dear Reader (a note from me to you)!

At its heart, Lucky Break is a story about self-acceptance, fresh starts, and found family. Perfect for fans of character-driven women’s fiction in the vein of Lori Nelson Spielman, Mary Kay Andrews, and Katherine Center, it’s filled with a quirky cast, small-town charm, and summery lake life vibes.

Here’s what you can expect:

✈️ Big city to Midwestern lake town
🍀 Self-discovery and second chances
🛶 Lake life antics
🕵🏻‍♀️ Low-stakes small-town mystery
💕 A sweet, romantic subplot (no spice!)
📚 Quirky, diverse cast of side characters
⛅ Lighter approach to weightier themes
🥔 A three-legged dog

I'm so excited for you all to meet Eliza and the Juneberry Lake crew this summer!

XO,

Thank you to Avon Books for the free ARC. All opinions are my own.

Lucky Break is the perfect summer read if you are looking for something wholesome, charming, and feel-good but not too fluffy. There’s a dash of romance, but it’s not a full out romance novel. There’s an intriguing mystery, but it’s not sinister. And perhaps most importantly, there is Potato the three-legged dog, who is particular about what she likes to watch on TV and has strong feelings about corn.

Let’s backup to the setup: Eliza Colletti lives in San Francisco not far from her parents and brother, who run the family’s Italian bakery. An eldest daughter, recovering perfectionist (hi it’s me), and planner through and through, Eliza is checking off items on her life plan one by one, until things suddenly take a turn that she definitely didn’t plan for. As she tries to figure out her next move, Eliza spots an ad offering an incentive to move to the small Minnesota town of Juneberry Lake. Figuring she has nothing to lose, she takes a chance and makes a big change.

Let’s talk about Juneberry Lake a little more. I loved spending time with Eliza there, taking in the lake itself and everything else the town had to offer. Who wouldn’t want to check out the Black Bear Brew Cafe or watch a Vikings game at the Common Loon sports bar? I also had fun getting to know characters including Eliza’s new neighbors, cafe owner Trish, and Eliza’s handsome new friend Joel. The book struck the perfect balance between allowing the reader to spend time with the characters in the town but also providing enough intrigue to keep things interesting.

This book also has plenty of representation, which was great to see: a beloved character with autism, a spunky little girl who uses a wheelchair, and more. Top that off with the perfect millennial pop culture references and this was a lovely read! Well done, Jaclyn, and happy pub day!

3.5⭐️? Rounded up.

Cute set up with great potential. When Eliza and her fiancé break up, she takes a chance and makes a big life change by moving away from her close knit Italian family in California and moving to a quaint midwestern town of Juneberry Lake. Although it takes some effort, she grows close to her neighbors and another newcomer named Joel. But everyone has their secrets. It’s an interesting journey as Eliza finds a new way forward and as some truths come to light. Maybe the promise for a new start will be as delightful as she had hoped.

So much of this story is cute with the new interactions in a nice location. But there’s a lot going on with different people each having their own issues. In some ways that’s interesting as multiple storylines develop. But it’s also not super engaging as the author tells about a lot of details but as the reader I was on the outside and not fully engaged. The development of Eliza and Joel is cute, but nothing exciting. Overall it’s cute but bland. Good potential! But for me the author spent more time outlining her positions on social issues and pushing a liberal ideology than on helping the reader connect with the characters. A lot of writing without engaging. I still enjoyed it. But I didn’t love it. I did love the idea of Juneberry Lake. And I’m glad that Eliza found her HEA.

This book was an easy five star read for me. This is the first book I've read from Jaclyn Westlake but it will not be my last. The concept of the book is well executed and flows very easily. I was expecting a cute cozy rom com but the added mystery element makes it so much more.

Lucky Break tells the story of Eliza (the FMC) who has had some bad luck in her life and finds herself lost. She decides to move to a small town where she knows no one and start over. I loved how the story handled the ups and downs of life and the reality of what a relationship looks like when it ends over something that fundamentally cannot be fixed. (Trigger warning for issues of infertility). This is not a topic that I have seen a lot in novels but it was handled extremely well. The cast of characters in the small lake town brought along a great story. I would read a book just based on life in that little neighborhood!

The plot twist and mystery were a fun added bonus. I would have enjoyed it even more if it had a little bit more teeth to it, just because I wanted it to be more central to the plot and there was so much to do with a small town like that. Same with the love story. I loved the chemistry between Eliza and Joel and wanted more scenes between them.

This is the perfect summer read!

I picked up Jaclyn Westlake’s debut novel, Dear Dotty, on a whim and it became a 5-star read for me. The main drawback was that this was a debut novel and I desperately wanted to read more of her books. When I saw that Lucky Break was an unreleased book by Jaclyn Westlake - I knew I had to read it asap. Luckily, NetGalley graciously provided me with an eARC, so thank you tremendously for that, and I was able to dive in to Jaclyn Westlake’s second novel, Lucky Break.

Lucky Break for me was a very easy read. As someone in her late twenties, I loved reading about this main character who is trying to figure her life out when not everything goes to plan. I did not foresee the mystery aspect of this novel and this was a welcome surprise. I know some people might be disappointed by the amount of romance within this book and I did expect more, but at the end I thought it was the perfect ratio. I think any more would have actually taken away from the main characters development. As she has experienced a recent break-up and is trying to make sense of what SHE truly wants out of her life.

I would absolutely read anything by Jaclyn Westlake again and hope she continues on writing these coming-of-age novels. Thank you again to NetGalley for the eARC.

This is such a technically well-written book, and I have to comment that because I’ve recently read books that shouldn’t have made it past the second editing round. I appreciate the author including such thoughtful sections on infertility and women not being certain about whether they want/need to have kids. Also, I love the descriptions of the town, the houses, the cafe etc. I felt like I could be in Juneberry and wish it was real. But honestly, it was way more “vibes over plot” for me, but it was also pretty boring. I don’t know how else to put it. It felt kind of unfinished or rushed. Another thing I really disliked was the cheating addition. It felt incredibly unnecessary. Actually, a lot of added details/plot points felt like this.

Lucky Break was a pleasant surprise much needed from others I had been reading. This was a first by Jaclyn Westlake for me, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I will admit I had forgotten what this book was about since it had been a few weeks since receiving the ARC. Going in blind was the best choice, and I believe helped me enjoy the FMC more than I thought I would. Liza is everything I am not; she is a Type-A planner, that lives by lists and goals dictating her current and future life. What we did have in common was the strong Italian, Catholic background, and issues with IVF/infertility. While I didn't mesh with her in the beginning, knowing what she went through when tying to have children, and her need for friends, who are like family, made me enjoyed her character more with each page.
I thoroughly respect Ms. Westlake for her approach to infertility/IVF and a women making her choice based on what her body can/can't do, her emotional trial through the process, and the realistic hard conversations had with partners.
The friendships and mystery behind Lucky Break were fun, cozy, and a breath of fresh air. I am going to research whether or not somewhere like June Berry, MN exists because it sounds like somewhere everyone should visit once in their lives.
Thank you Avon (Harper Voyager) and NetGalley for this cozy little summer ARC in exchange for for my honest review.

This was a well written book about self discovery in a world of dangers and changes. I honestly went in anticipating this to be a romance, so I was slightly disappointed that it wasn’t just romance lol. Eliza is a very interesting but likable character. I wish her relationship with Hannah was talked about more, at least outside of her head. I loved her neighbors, except for the cheating plot between two of them

This was a moving friends to lovers slow burn, small town romance that has a recently dumped woman moving from San Francisco to Minnesota after her fiance couldn't come to terms with her infertility. I really liked this one a lot. The whole cast of side characters were equally quirky, welcoming and hiding a surprising secret. The book also has excellent disability and mental health rep as the FMC has to come to terms with her inability to have children and has an autistic brother. There's also a sweet romance with a cinnamon roll MMC. It was good on audio and perfect for fans of authors like Jenny Holiday or Abby Jimenez. Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an early audio and digital copy in exchange for my honest review.

Ugh. This makes me sad that I’m not rating this 5 stars like Dear Dotty, this is a solid 3.5⭐️

I love this author a lot. I love her style of writing and she has a way to really make you feel connected to her book, but this reaaaalllly fell short. I read a review and someone described this as a “low stakes mystery” and that is perfectly put.

She had great themes, really relatable quotes, but it seemed like we were just waiting for something to happen, and then when it finally did (about 70 percent in) it was very…womp womp. I didn’t care. Parts were obnoxiously predictable.

Loved her Stars Hollow mention, and LOVED the Italian POV. It’s what initially drew me to this book, all of that made me feel good and was super relatable. Just disappointed this book didn’t have enough on the line.

Thank you to NetGalley and Avon and Harper Voyager for the advanced copy!

Eliza is what you'd call a Type A person. She has lists upon lists, goals laid out for years in the future, and basically has her entire life planned out. It all goes wayward when her fiancé breaks up with her and kicks her out of their shared apartment. What's a girl to do but move to a charming Minnesota neighborhood? We're met with kooky neighbors, a town that feels like a mini version of Duluth, and a cute man also new to the town. However- there's just something odd about her neighbors and the house she bought. No one wants to bring her up and why she left. So Eliza starts trying to figure it out for herself, while also trying to come to terms with life can't always be planned out.

I enjoyed the book, but the mystery behind Erica was.. eh. I also felt like her epiphany at the end about how she's living her life wasn't maybe the best way to look at it? There were definitely some surprises but I felt like some of the characters could've been more fleshed out. I loved the neighbors and getting to know their personalities. The third act "breakup" (if that's what you'd want to call it), felt like it was only there to serve as a reminder of what we usually get in romance novels. It felt unnecessary.

Overall, I thought it was a cute lil romance and it reminded me of going to the lake in the summer (Minnesota girl forever). Also- how the HELL can you hate cheese curds????

Thank you, Avon/Harper Voyager and NetGalley, for an eARC of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own. I was not compensated for this review.

I was pleasantly surprised by this book! I have never read a book by Jaclyn Westlake, so I had no idea what to expect. This did not disappoint.

I do want to note that, though Goodreads has Romance as the first tag for this book, NetGalley has it listed as General Fiction (Adult), Women’s Fiction, and New Adult. This is an important distinction!!! If you go into this book expecting the romance to be the main plot line, I think you will be disappointed, because it’s definitely more of a subplot.

Okay, now to get into the book!

Our FMC, Eliza, has her whole life figured out, down to the age that each event will happen. That plan is going well…until it isn’t anymore, and she finds herself single, houseless, and unsure of what’s next. Enter Juneberry Lake, a quaint Midwestern town nestled around a lake. The town is incentivizing young, remote workers to live there, and Eliza decides to take a chance on it, which is totally out of character for her. Upon moving to Juneberry Lake, Eliza realizes these people may be harboring secrets about her home’s previous owner, and she wants to get to the bottom of it. With the help of Joel, a younger man who is also new to the area, she starts to uncover the truth about some of Juneberry Lake’s residents that could change all of their lives if she isn’t careful.

I resonated with Eliza a lot. The reason for planning her life down to the T is a coping mechanism and way to protect herself. It’s a heartbreaking reveal, but it makes her character make so much sense. I enjoyed seeing her navigate that experience, process her feelings, and move forward through the book.

The townspeople of Juneberry Lake could be akin to those of Stars Hollow in Gilmore Girls. You have your gaggle of neighbors who orbit each other in this small town, and some are skeptical of the outsider that’s getting cozy in their neighborhood. Learning more about them was just as enjoyable as learning more about Eliza herself. There was a diverse cast of characters, but it didn’t feel forced at all. Each person had a unique personality, but they all made Juneberry Lake what it was.

I liked the mystery aspect of this book as well. It was more of a cozy mystery than something suspenseful. It kept me intrigued to learn the truth and curious about how the community would protect those involved. I think, though a low-probability situation, it wasn’t unrealistic, so it still felt true to the book.

Watching Eliza and Joel’s relationship develop was also really cute. Friends to lovers will do it for me, and this was no exception. Their forced proximity wasn’t “forced” in a writing sense, and there was a natural progression in their relationship. I can always do without the third-act breakup, but I know that’s typical for a romance plot these days.

Overall, this was an enjoyable book! Remember, go into it with a General/Women’s Fiction mindset, not romance, and I think that will make a difference for the reading experience.

Lucky Break by Jaclyn Westlake turned out to be just the remedy I needed as I recovered from a week of being ill. It is a feel-good story of the highest order; it includes a mystery, a huge change in the main character’s life, and, yes, a romance.

Eliza, born and raised in San Francisco, makes an abrupt and sudden change in her life when she and her fiancé break up, leaving her with no apartment and insufficient funds to rent one on her own in such an expensive market. When she sees this ad: “Looking for a Fresh Start? These Small-Town Charmers Will Pay You to Relocate.” Eliza fills out an application. She can receive up to $10,000 to purchase a home within the city limits.

For Eliza, who has always had a plan for her life, this move to Juneberry Lake marks a huge departure because she expected to marry Marco, continue her career, and have children, all in San Francisco. Now that the engagement is off and thus her fully organized plan for her life on hold, Eliza feels it is time for an adventure.

Luckily, Eliza can work remotely, so she can continue in the job she already has. When Trish Miller of the Join Juneberry Lake program calls, she tells Eliza that her application has been chosen for the program because “you are just the type of person we’re looking to attract to Juneberry Lake—a young techie professional with a great job and a genuine interest in being part of our little community.” Trish also tells Eliza about a fully furnished and recently remodeled cabin on the lake that is for sale, all items included. Eliza can put the $10,000 stipend down on the cabin.

Eliza surprises her close-knit family when she tells them she is moving to MN, but they love and support her. Eliza soon meets her close neighbors and becomes friends with Trish who owns the local coffee shop. She meets Joel at the coffee shop, and they become friends too. At first, neither seems interested in taking their relationship any further. They both have pasts they are not ready to share.
The mystery involves Erica, who once owned the cabin where Eliza now lives. Readers will have to read the story to discover the whole mystery and why the other neighbors are so reluctant to talk about Erica.

Lucky Break is a story featuring found family, one of my favorite themes. While Eliza has a lovely family, they now live far apart. She forges new friendships and finds romance along the way. Lucky Break is about relationships, friendships, and forging a new life. It is a delightful read.

This is Jaclyn’s second book and it was so good!! Love how we started in SF then moved to the Midwest to a small town. This had all my favorite elements in it. The breakup, the move to a very different place, getting into everyone’s business, and starting over. There was even a small town mystery on this street that she moved to.

Just like the authors mentioned above the care and time spent crafting these characters that made up Juneberry Lake was apparent. Enjoyed all of their relationships and her relationship with her parents and brother.

There is discussion of infertility and an unsupportive partner. So take care but I love this kind of representation in romance novels. The romance that happens is very early days in ways of dating and it’s not physical yet. This story was more about the human connections and finding yourself when everything falls apart.

Also anxiety and grief are a part of the fmcs everyday.

✨I remember asking someone who just had gotten married when they were going to have kids and she said they weren’t. I try not to ask those questions unless I really know the person cause I felt bad that I added to the pile of that question I’m sure they never stopped getting. Also for other friends who are trying or have stopped cause it’s too hard I try to not ask why they never had kids. You never know someone else’s journey and story. I try to be a sounding board and a witness for those who need it.

Lucky Break
by Jaclyn Westlake

About the book 👇🏽

Eliza has always had a plan…until her seamlessly plotted life implodes, and her engagement falls apart. At thirty-two, she suddenly finds herself second-guessing the picture-perfect future she had always envisioned—one that included raising 2.5 children nearby her tight-knit Italian family in San Francisco.

Then Eliza is offered the chance to start over: in Juneberry Lake, a small Midwestern town eager to lure remote workers to their picturesque community. Shocking her family and friends (and herself), Eliza packs up her apartment and buys a lake house sight unseen.

💕 My thoughts:

After reading Dear Dotty last year, I knew I just needed to read Lucky Break! And I loved it. This story has a little bit of everything… romance, found family and even mystery! The characters are lovable and comforting which makes this story that much more enjoyable. The romance is a little on the back burner which isn’t a bad thing! just something to know going in, in case you’re looking for a full blown romance. Let me tell you though, once you start it you’ll feel all the warmth this heartwarming story has to offer! Lucky Break is a wonderful summer read and it’s out TODAY 7/15/25!

Happy reading 📖💕☀️

The cover of this book, and the title, implored me to read it and I’m very glad I did. Eliza is experiencing a lot of change in her life and as a strict planner this isn’t ideal. I feel like a lot of the emotions Eliza was experiencing were common for everyone at some point in life. We question what the heck we are doing and how we got to where we are. Sometimes “life planners” drive me a little nutty, I don’t feel like we can control everything, but the more the reader learns about Eliza the more you understand her way of thinking and empathize with her character. I loved the town of Juneberry Lake and all the characters that came with it. I feel like a large part of this story is the mystery’s Eliza is trying to solve once she arrives in Juneberry Lake. There is definitely romance (closed door) inter-woven throughout, but I felt more invested in what her neighbors were up to and some of their stories than Eliza’s romantic life, although I definitely wanted her to have a HEA. Overall, I really enjoyed this story, I truly didn’t know how it was going to end. There is good character growth, from Eliza and the side characters, that I loved throughout. Thank you to NetGalley for the advanced copy of this book.

After a nasty breakup, Eliza joins the Juneberry Lake Relocation program, leaving her family in San Francisco and moving to the midwest. Once there, she jumps headfirst into the quirky neighborhood she's only dreamed about.

This was a cute one. I really loved the town and the neighborhood. They were what stood out to me the most. They were so kind and welcoming. I wanted to move to this town after one chapter there! I liked all of the characters, including the MCs. I was rooting for Eliza to really find a place. It was nice that she had a romance but I found myself more looking for her to find her way in life without a man. There is also a little mystery in this one. Eliza digs into the woman who used to live in her house. While I loved all of this, I did want to see more of a connection between Eliza and Joel. There is also a backstory that can be very emotional for some so check TW.

All in all, a cute fish out of water romance.

"Life is unpredictable— people get sick, they have miscarriages, they lose their jobs, they change their minds. It’s not fair to expect them to check off every box on an arbitrary list or to be the exact same person here after year.”

This was a sweet romance. I found the pacing at times a bit slow. I also didn’t like how the heroine would constantly make timelines for her life and wouldn’t except the fact that sometimes life will not go according to plan. It was interesting to read how she moves to a small town in Minnesota. I loved reading how she slowly built her life there. All of the small town characters were interesting to read as well. There’s a bit of mystery that the heroine tries to undercover and I found it a bit odd that it was in a romance book. I honestly felt like this was more a woman’s fiction.

5 stars — Thank you NetGalley & HarperCollins for the ARC!

I absolutely devoured Lucky Break! From the very first chapter, I was hooked—not just by the chemistry and banter (which were top tier), but by the unexpected hint of mystery woven into the story. It added an extra layer of intrigue that kept me flipping pages late into the night.

Jaclyn Westlake nails that perfect blend of heart, humor, and emotional depth. The romance was swoony without being over the top, and the characters felt so real—flawed, funny, and lovable. I especially appreciated how the plot gave space for growth, connection, and a few surprises along the way.

This was more than just a feel-good romance—it had substance, a few twists, and just enough tension to make the payoff that much sweeter. I loved every second and already know I’ll be recommending this one nonstop.

Huge thanks to NetGalley and HarperCollins for the early copy!

Loved the small Midwestern lake town setting.
And Eliza starting over via the Join Juneberry Lake program was an intriguing concept. I really felt for Eliza and the challenges she went through as a teenager and with her fiancé. On the other hand, I didn’t feel the chemistry between Eliza and Joel. It felt a bit like an afterthought. I kept waiting for her real love interest to show up. The quirky characters and the mystery among the neighbors kept me reading, however, and I can see why others enjoyed this light, easy read.

Thank you to the publisher and to NetGalley for the ARC. It seems as if this book is being marketed as a romance and it is really not. This book is about a woman whose fiancé breaks up with her and she moves to a small lake town in Minnesota. It is much more about growing up and moving on and finding yourself than a romance. I would classify it as women’s fiction. I loved the characters and the various representation. This was a new to me author and I would read another one by her.

This novel was cute and heartwarming, with a deeper flashback story than I expected. Overall it was an easy read with a delightful cast of characters. The romance was more of a subplot which felt a little like false advertising, but I still enjoyed it. Pub date July 15, 2025.
