But Riley is only staying the summer in California and then has to go back to Colorado at the end. Cara tells herself he’s just a summer fling and is determined to enjoy herself and let him go once the summer is over. But once Riley receives orders he wasn’t expecting, she’s forced to make a decision on whether she’s going to be there for him when he gets back, or move on with her life. *****NoTe: I have kids on my GoodReads friend list. If you fall into that category, please skip this review on my feed.*****

I got this because it looked like a military romance, and it was free. What it actually turned out to be was soft porn with a military twist.

Cara is a single mother who works all day, parties every other weekend ((SEXXXXXXX...))and completely blows off her two-year old while claiming he's a huge part of her life. She spends lots of time either hating on the inmates where she works (prison admin.) or getting drunk and looking for ((SEXXXXXX...)) Already it's a great book. *Not.*

Then Cara meets Riley, a soldier who comes home from the bar with her ((SEXXXXXX...)) and then the wake up and ((SEXXXXX...)) and vague mention of Alcatraz trip and ((SEXXXXX...)) and then showers and ((SEXXXXXX...)) with an allusion to a workweek in there, then ((SEXXXXXX...)) and then drunk and ((SEXXXXX...)) and then dancing at a country bar and ((SEXXXXX...)) then rodeo trip mentioned and ((SEXXXXX...)) and she remembers she has a son, but ((SEXXXXXX...))

Basically, this is one great big sex scene after another. With vague mention of other things, but really Pinard has no use for descriptive writing or plot development or pretty much ANYTHING to do with the putting together of a good story - she just wants soft porn by way of words on a page.

And she accomplished it. But it's really not very captivating to the reader. You don't feel anything between the craptastic characters, lack of atmosphere and location, and everything else she sacrifices for the sake of her smut-fix. The point of this was to help the author masturbate. I don't think it was even *meant* for us.

And even the first sentence of the book...! I was wondering who the heck her editor was, because that was a HORRIBLE sentence for ANY place in the book, let alone the opening line. The tone, the writing...

Honestly. Skip it.

One thing is for sure this was a pleasure and not a duty to read this book. First time in reading this author and this one opened me up to a excellent writing style that keeps you reading once you begin and do not want to put it down till you are finished. Divorced mom Cara works and has a funny best friend Miranda. They go out on weekends looking for that good time at cowboy bars or ones with military. On one of these nights she meets Riley and the fun and romance begins. The interaction between these two is riveting and explosive and the type of romance any woman would go for if so lucky. You also are to note he is with the military and they are dreamy in my opinion and love reading about them. Who wouldn't like one with the build they have. This friend of hers Miranda is a hilarious to read about go getter. She too finds her prince charmer but of a different occupation. I think she also finally meets her match and this is one that you think only wants to mess around but you are surprised with her news. Cara and Riley were a wonderful couple to read about and it was a hot pleasure to read about their budding growing romance. But there comes a part where your heart stops and you are in anticipation of sudden turn in their relationship that you race through anxiously to get to the outcome of that. Have no fear though this author will not be a disappointment in the conclusion of their situation that leaves you fanning yourself wondering where can I get me a soldier boy. I so love it when a author can keep me into and leave me wanting to read more from them because of their ability to write that darn good. Received a copy for a honest review.

Patriotic Duty is a fun, military romance and makes a great beach read (is it too early for beach reads? Nah...).

Cara is recently divorced and is only looking for a good time when she meets handsome Riley. She tells herself it's only a fling but the more they're together, the deeper her feelings go. When he gets his orders, will she stick with Riley or will she move on?

This was my first book by Pinard and it won't be my last. I thoroughly enjoyed reading Patriotic Duty. Cara and Riley are well-written and there's depth. The dialogue is sassy and I found myself laughing aloud. A great romance and highly recommend!

~!~ What a wonderful romance between two "normal" people ~!~

Cara is a 26 year old divorced mother with a 2 year old child and Riley is a military man stationed in Colorado but is temporarily stationed just outside San Francisco for 3 months. Cara and Riley meet at a bar and a beautiful romance develops between the two of them, but unfortunately their romance has an expiration date of that 3 months.
One of the things I really loved about this story is that it's about two regular people living regular lives and falling in love. Cara definitely fights a little bit with her low self esteem and that is a hindrance with her ability to properly express her true feelings.
This wonderful romance takes a few twists and turns; some you see coming, and some you don't. Your emotions will go on a rollercoaster ride, but in the end it is most definitely worth the amazing HEA ending.

I loved it!! I felt emotions as the characters did! I love Cara and Riley's story! I felt happy at their happiness, distraught at their despair, and I was hopeful when things got rough!

This book takes you on a ride that you won't regret taking!!!

Cara, divorced at a young age, is just looking for a fun night when she meets the lovely (and sexy) Riley, who knew one night could turn into so much more??

I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys reading romance and to the military girlfriends and wives :-)

A portion of profits from the book go to the wounded warrior project! That makes me love this book a thousand times more!

Dnf at 12% Cara came over as little more than a drunken slut. There is a scene where she is suffering a serious hangover on a Monday morning from the drinking on Saturday and she takes her child to daycare!!!!!

WTF!!!!????

So WHO looked after the child on Sunday night :?? Clearly the mother was totally incapable. I gave up in disgust at this point.

I had to call it at 17%. Cara in the first few chapters didn't make me like her and honestly, I'm sad to say, I thought "geez, I don't blame her husband for leaving".

There's absolutely nothing to show that she's a loving mother except a word or 2 that he's her world.... But it really doesn't read that way (especially with taking strange men to your house - - even if the kid is with daddy that weekend)

She's bitching in the first chapter about how she needed to quit her hairstylist job for the prison job to earn more... But then the next sentence is saying she earns less?!

A bar/nightclub she and her hoe friend frequent, and yet the author has her being unaware of why there are picnic tables outside or better yet she's just discovered a Barber Shop chair. I know clubs at times add new things, but come on, everyone surrounding the chair knew all about it and how it worked.

Then she and hoe friend take back to HER HOUSE, 2 men they JUST met at another bar where she takes the Riley guy to her room and gives him head (oh but she doesn't swallow folks!).. What made me give up was the friend coming to the bedroom door saying she gave Riley's buddy a bj (they talk to each other like they're in Jr high by the way) and she found out he's married so sent him packing. Now she's going to leave her friend (her bff) all alone with this guy they picked up at a bar and head on home but, yanno wink wink have fun.
So now we have hoe friend not giving two crap about the safety of her supposed BFF. You'd think that Cara would be smart and say bye to Riley. NOPE! You'd think that having divorced a cheater and hearing Riley's buddy is married and cheating she'd go "Hey Riley, you don't by any chance have a little woman at home?" or peek at his ring finger for a tan line.. NOPE! She gets into bed with him to sleep.

Yeah I'm done. Thankfully it was free or Amazon would be refunding me. I've rolled my eyes so much I have a headache and I've said what the f (another "cutesy" thing Cara does is not say fuck... But she'll say shit and suck dick on a stranger...) way too many times that for my health I have to stop reading this.

Good luck to others reading

This book was free on Barnes and Noble so I figured I'd give it a try. It was a short read, 153 pages on my Nook and I finished it in one afternoon. I know 2 stars seesm low and I'm not trying to be mean, this book was just lacking for me. I felt it was very rushed and therefore we missed out on a lot of possible story and it made Riley seem a little creepy and needy to me. Had we gotten more story and found them doing more than just humping I think I would've found the love story more believable and liked the characters more. Also, the ending seemed rushed and I probably would've liked that drawn out more.

I did like that this book took place in the Bay Area, it's where I'm from and I could easily picture all the settings. I work down the street from the reserve base and jail, and I could easily picture the country bar they frequent. Makes things seem a little real for me when I know exactly what the places look like.

Reading Patriotic Duty about a hot military guy who met a young single mother and became involved before he was deployed makes one realize the sacrifices military families make when they serve our country. Cara and Riley's story is sweet but the reality of the story and how close it is to some real-life situations is what made Patriotic Duty a great story to honor those how serve our country and their families.

Spare yourselves

I was immediately drawn in by the blurb. Being from a military family, I was very excited to begin this series. Little did I know.....
The writing style is juvenile. I despised the "heroine" the entire book. I have never left a book unfinished but this one was tempting.

Another good job by CJ Pinard! Book was filled with all the things I love in a book: sex, fun, sex, drama, sex, and romance. (Did I mention the sex? Whew!) Hope she writes more in this genre.

I enjoyed this book. Very easy read and took me back to some of the stories my former-military husband had. Quite a bit of erotica in this book, but not too overwhelming. Loved the fact it mainly took place in California and was up to date on lingo.

Patriotic Duty (When Riley Met Carter, Book 1) has everything that I love in this contemporary romance by C.J. Pinard (Enchanted Immortals series). This short novel is fun, cheeky, sexy and saucy but not without the drama of a beautiful romance. If you're looking for a hot, cute soldier who's looking for more than somewhere to spend the night, then Riley is your man and Patriotic Duty is your kind of book!

Single mum and recent divorcee, Cara Reid spends most of her weekends with her best friend, Miranda, having fun going to clubs, living it up and meeting hot guys. She is young and not in the least thinking to settling down any time soon, especially after her experience with her ex. However, one night after hooking up with Riley her summer is planned. He is to be in California for the summer before he is due back in Colorado, and so they spend summer together.

Cara naturally opens up to him and accepts his ways far more than she would anyone else. She is falling for him, even though she doesn't want to admit it. Of course, it is just a summer fling. Or at least that is what she keeps informing Miranda when she stops partying for a while to be with Riley. However, as the summer comes to a close, Riley is given orders to do a tour of nine months in Afghanistan. As they agree to keep in touch, Cara is left feeling a little lost. Still not wanting to admit to her true feelings and yet not wanting to return to her life of partying with Miranda, Cara is left with a decision to make. Will she wait for her cute, hot soldier or does she move on with her life?

During the summer that they are together, Cara and Riley spend day trips together, go to a concert, visit bars, have some hot, fantastic sex, and Riley even gets to meet Cara's son on some occasions. This shows how well their relationship is going, as usually Cara keeps this side of her life away from her son. Riley is very sweet, although the strong, silent type in some instances. Cara seems to be his world and the reader feels his sincerity to her. It is only his quieter side at times that makes Cara and the reader wonder what he is really thinking. But all will be revealed as the story moves on.

Patriotic Duty is a nice, light romance that becomes a little more serious and dramatic as the novel enters its second half, especially with Riley on tour in Afghanistan and Cara having little contact with him. What is going through Cara's mind? Can she focus on getting her party life back with Miranda?

When Riley Met Cara has the potential to bceome much more complex and darker as the series moves on. However, for the first book of the series it does have a simple straight forward plot, which I loved after reading some heavy psychological horrors recently!! There were parts early on that made me laugh out loud as the interaction between Cara and Miranda was fun. They certainly knew how to have a laugh and cheer each other up.

I found Miranda to be a great supportive friend for Cara. Miranda, also a single mum, had been left by her ex to bring up their child and therefore, was in the same boat as Cara. Both characters are realistic and so long as the babysitters are available, of course young women would want to go out at weekends and have some fun. They also spend time together with their kids and meet up for lunch during their working week, and so have a tight bond, like sisters.

Although, Miranda's attitude towards Cara does slightly change as she realises that Cara is becoming quite serious with Riley. She is perhaps worried for Cara that Riley will treat her bad in the end, and she may be a little jealous of the time that Riley spends with Cara when she could be with her. This is what makes Patriotic Duty realistic and easy to connect with. The characters have real feelings and thoughts that the majority of us have, and these lead to similar situations that we have either been in or those that we know have been in.

Brilliantly written by C.J. Pinard, Patriotic Duty is very fluid and there is not a moment that you lose grips with the story. I read this book in one day and so it is a very quick read. Due to the hot love scenes this book is recommended for those above the age of 18 yrs.

If you are a fan of C.J. Pinard's urban fantasy/paranormal series, Enchanted Immortals, you will see a whole different side of her work in Patriotic Duty. C.J. has shown just how versatile her writing can be, and I for one absolutely love it. I am looking forward to reading the second book in the When Riley Met Carter series.

A Reader's Review Blog received a copy of Patriotic Duty from the author in return for a fair and honest review.

I really enjoyed this quick read. Its the kind of book you would want to curl up with on a cold and dreary day. The main Character, Cara, is a person to admire. Being only 26, she finds herself a divorced and single mother. She has pulled up her big girl panties and move on in raising her 2 year old son. She is a touch of a party girl, but only when her son is with his dad on weekends and such. Cara and her best friend, Miranda, frequent clubs in search of a good time. their mission is to catch sexy men and possible fun between the sheets. Miranda, in my opionion, is a totally player who influences Cara. Miranda figures all men are cheaters and users, so they might as well be the same.
She voices her opinions, strongly, to Cara about men throught the book.

"Girl, I could have check-marked Army,Navy, Air Force, and Marines- hell, even the Coast Guard. I've done my patriotic duty. I've been of service, all right!"

Cara is caught off guard when she catches the eye of a handsome soldier, Riley. She expects the guy to dump her at any minute, but is continuously surprised when he doesn't go anywhere. It is a whirlwind romance only to last through the summer; when rylie is to be stationed elsewhere. the chemistry between these two sizzled up my Ipad.

The time comes for Riley to leave and Cara and Rylie find themselves sad and lost. Has there love grown? Will they continue on? It was just suppose to be a summer fling, right? Let's just say there were events that took place after Riley left that broke my heart and brought tears to my eyes on many occasions. The ending is not what I expected; I thought I had everything totally figured out.
Patriotic Duty had a 'real feel' too me. I could just imagine silimar romance and tragedy happening to those who have ,and still, serve our country.

" I cursed myself for this kind, beautiful, perfect soldier boy to seep in through my skin and settle into my heart. That wasn't suppose to happen, and yet here I was... heartsick and breathless."

Do you like books that are written at a 3rd grade level and make you feel dumb? Or an even better question, do you like books that are written about VERY DUMB people? Then this is for you!

Bookbub said I could download this book for free, so I did. Now *I* am dumb! I can get GOOD books for free at the library!

SPOILERS!!!!!!!!!

I have rewritten the synopsis that should appear on the book's jacket:

Cara, a total loser with a failed marriage and a child she rarely cares for hangs out with Miranda, another total loser with a failed marriage and a child she rarely cares for. They spend all their time getting drunk, driving while possibly drunk and making out/having sex with complete strangers. One day at a bar while extremely drunk, Cara meets a stranger who is a soldier named Riley and she takes him back to the home she shares with an innocent two year old child and has unprotected sex with him. They then embark on an uninteresting romance where he tells her he loves her and asks her to wait for him while he goes to Afghanistan. She won't tell him she loves him, but agrees to wait. She then cheats on him. A long time later he comes home from Afghanistan, but is scarred from a roadside bomb. She agrees to marry him, despite her admitting earlier she didn't want to know about what he'd gone through at war and her also hiding her head at one time because she didn't want to see that he might be crying. She WAS sweet enough to tell him that if he ever said he wasn't good enough for her due to scarring that he'd owe her a piece of jewelry. The end.

There were little plot holes, WAY too much description about unnecessary details and copious amounts of the most boring sex I've ever read. So, I did not like this book.

It was all very fast paced. I know it was spread out through weeks but the story just jumped to each visit no story in-between.

I liked Riley we never got a back story for him other than he's stationed in Colorado but is from Arizona?? I think I can't even remember.

Cara was lying to herself basically until he had to leave that she wasn't in love with him and that it wasn't serious between them.

The reunion was nice, nothing major just enough to tie it all up.
All in all I'd say it wasn't the greatest book out there but it wasn't the worst.

This story was a very touching story between a girl & her soldier boy she didn't mean to have feelings for, But she did, And when he got the orders he had to leave she didn't forget about him nor would she see anyone She tried but her heart and feelings were with Riley,

The story also made me angry and cry I thought that he was really going to leave her, And he did it with a phone call, When he got back to Colorado he said he found someone else but he was hiding some thing from Cara He couldn't say that he loved her before he left then come back and find someone else,

When Cara went to her friend's wedding and flew back into Colorado where her and her son moved back to A stranger was sitting at the airport and kept staring at her It made her nervous until the stranger revealed himself It as Riley but she seen what he was trying to hide from her when he came home from his tour of duty,

When she seen it she didn't know what to say, We she stay with him after she saw him or would she stay with him and make a life together?

I read this book, twice. The first time I just couldn't fall into it, then I realized it was because I was still holding on to the thought that it was a book by the author of Enchanted Immortals, so I felt it strange. I had to put it down, let my mind rest a bit and then re-read it. The story is really good and the characters are perfectly defined, it's easy to identify oneself with them. I loved Cara, she's a sweet, funny character. I found it a bit too sexual for my taste. Miranda, I did not like her much, she doesn't seem to have a lot of self respect or to believe that Cara should have someone steady in her life, at least at some point. I liked the rhythm of the story, well paced, not too fast or slow. All in all, I enjoyed the book and although I found it sexier than my taste, the steamy scenes were tactful and in good taste, nothing too exaggerated or high-toned. I'd give it 4 1/2 stars... if I only knew how to shade half a star!!!

This book is everything I hate about self published unedited independent authors. I have enjoyed several other self published unedited independent authors, but this price is a prime example of why so many people hate it. The writing is sloppy, the plot is as loose as the main character, the timeline contradicts itself, the actions of the characters aren't kept straight, there are typos all over the place, zero chemistry between any of the characters, just hey here's a sex scene I wrote in 7th grade and I have to connect it to this other sex scene I wrote in 8th grade so, umm how about they text each other? Cara, the main character doesn't even have chemistry with her BFF. And as a military spouse, I find Cara and her attitude about the whole relationship insulting.

The story has SO much potential. This rough draft needs to be turned back to the student for revisions and editing.

This is definitely a book that will keep you up until you finish it! The characters, especially Cara as she was struggling to find her identity outside of being a divorced mother. Riley Forrester is a soldier training at another base and once his training was over, he would be headed back to Colorado. Colorado is not California, so Cara tries to reassure herself that their relationship can be nothing more than friends with benefits. Funny how the heart doesn't listen! Unexpected orders to deploy send Riley overseas and puts Cara in a tailspin. She's in love with him and he's in love with her. Is that enough? A fledgling relationship struggling against distance and minimal communication. Tours of duty end. Does their love end too? You'll have to read this gripping romantic tale. You won't be disappointed, I'm sure.

This did not work at all for me. The main character was kind of nasty; she called other women bitches (do women who do this have friends?) and referred to guys as "military meat." Using the first person, present tense just made everything...ickier. I had to quit before there were sex scenes and a Silkwood Shower would be required.
