Danaan Rias is a witch without a coven, forbidden from using her magic. When her magic begins to act out of control, she realizes she can no longer stay hidden from the world. Learning to live her life, she meets Ashly and learns to love too.
Ashly Mercer is a monster hunter. The youngest daughter of a proud family, she’s sacrificed most of her life to the whims of her parents. While fighting for a life on her own terms, she meets Rias and discovers possibilities she never considered.
As fate brings these two women together, their bond is put to the test. Ashly must decide if her life as a hunter is more important than the woman she wants to spend her future with, as Rias learns what it is to truly live, in spite of her past.
Together their paths lead back to the supernatural sanctuary of Terabend.
Hunt of Her Own is a stand alone novel set in the same paranormal world as Pack of Her Own (Mar 2023) and Mate of Her Own (Oct 2023). The focus in this book is on Danaan Rias, a witch who lives peacefully in a community of werewolves and others. She doesn’t have a coven and has been forbidden to use her magic by the witch world. But when her magic begins acting out she seeks help from a mentor. Her path crosses Ashly Mercer, first as a one night stand. They meet again months later and they agree to continue seeing each other although living hours apart. Ashley is a monster hunter. Raised to believe that she is one of the few that are called upon to kill monsters such as werewolves, vampires and witches. Neither is sure when to reveal their secret to the other.
I enjoyed the story. Ashley comes off as angry and impulsive. And I love how Rias and Ashley settle each other. Her two mishaps in the later half of the book gave me a chuckle. I thought the action scenes were good as was the villain. I was surprised at Ashley’s connection to another character, but it fit the story well. I do think that it helped that I already understood the world from reading the previous books. And I do love the idea of found family that flows through stories. Thank you to NetGalley and Bold Strokes Books for the ARC and I am leaving an honest review.
would like to thank netgalley and the publisher for letting me read this book
ashley and rias are mortal enemies though they dont know it...
ashley is a hunter of all things not human and rias is a witch
both are keeping secrets as their affair goes on... but each feels that the other will understand and accept them....
they are heading for a showdown that has been orchestrated by another powerful witch
time will tell if they survive
what a storyline.... so much happening and yet so brilliantly written to keep you reading right to the end... with the hope that things can sort itself out...
This one was a little different from the other books in the series. First, none of the MCs are werewolves this time, though they do play a part in the story. Second, there is no instalove. Instalust, sure...but that happens all the time. It was nice to see the old gang back together, and the surprise with Wren and Natalie is awesome. I hope we get another book and a chance to explore all of that situation, even from afar. This time we get to know Rias better and see her find her love. I was not expecting the twist with who Ashly is, though I suspected after a few different exchanges. It was a fun and interesting one, and I hope we get to see where things go.
The romance between Rias and Ashly is much more normal paced. It happens over many months and really starts as a long-distance relationship. We time skip quite a bit as things progress, but we still get the sense of pining that both of them have for each other. And the need to share who they are, while both being afraid of being rejected for who they are. It takes a bit of miscommunication and catastrophe for them to press the issue of them moving things into a less long-distance thing. My only real complaint is that I feel like Rias should have had a lot more conflicting emotions about Ashly after finding out she's a hunter and what she's been involved in. We got to see Ashly overcome her prejudices about the supernatural and how she grapples with that...but not the other way around.
There is no third act breakup. There is quite a bit more action in this book than in previous books. Oddly enough the drama that could have pushed them apart is kind of glossed over because Rias doesn't have any real issues with who Ashly is. Her faith in Ashly is pretty strong considering the evidence against her. This book tied up a lot of the loose ends from all the other books...so I'm not sure if there will be another book in the series. I hope there will be though because I really enjoy all the characters we've gotten to know.
The third installment of the series, it's now Rias in the spotlight, a minor character from the previous books, and Ashly, a hunter of the supernatural. Of course, the characters from the previous books all play important roles, and we get to see more development for them as well.
Very much enjoyed this installment, along with all the twists and turns that occurred along the way. It's not all smooth sailing, as there are plenty of issues to overcome, and it also wraps up some plot lines from the earlier books as well.
If you've read the previous books in the series (which I'd recommend before picking this one up), then you'll have a fairly good idea of what to expect, and it definitely delivers.
Wow. The angst and excitement of this book! Whew! Another amazing story set in Terabend featuring all our favorite supernaturals while really getting to know Rias better and even Natalie. This book was action packed and had me on the edge throughout it all. Highly recommend all three books if you like sapphic pnr, lots of action, found family, soulmates and spice that flows with the story perfectly…
Hunt of Her Own is the third book in Elena Abbott's -of Her Own series. Whilst it can be read stand-alone, I'd definitely recommend getting to know the universe and its character a little more by reading the first two beforehand.
A contemporary sapphic romantasy, the book stars Rias, the covenless witch struggling to control her magic, and Ashly the monster hunter, trapped in the control of her family. When they meet by chance late one night at a hotel bar, sparks fly.
Abbott continues the series' exploration of characters that exist in fundamentally abusive social dynamics seeking, and ultimately achieving, their escape in the town of Terabend. Ashly's story is one that would resonate with a lot of queer people: being forced to fit into a particular box by one's family, or risk losing the support of some of the people closest to you.
I thoroughly enjoyed how this book sought to grow beyond the first two in the series, Pack and Mate of Her Own. The story is set over many months, as opposed to the few days or weeks of the other books. I did, however, find myself rolling my eyes in bemusement after the seventh multiple-month time skip.
There is a major twist in the end of the book, that I won't spoil, that was very captivating but laboured and a little cheap. Hunt's action-packed finale had me hooked.
If you are going to start the -of Her Own series, I would definitely recommend finding another book or two to read in between entries. I read all three back-to-back in the space of about a month, and struggled to make it across the finish line. While the books are still very good, the main characters all struggle with similar personal issues that they learn to grow beyond, and that felt a little repetitive during a binge-read.
All in all, I did thoroughly enjoy Hunt of Her Own, and the themes of family (both good and bad), connection, and belonging Abbott wove throughout the three books were very salient for the queer cast of characters she has created.
Forbidden and yet predestined. Danaan Rias is a witch who is forbidden to do magic. But her powers prove to her that she has no choice! Especially when, after years of ignoring said powers, she briefly uses them to do the right thing, everything starts moving and sometimes gets out of control. During this time, her heart and her feelings get completely out of control and she meets her fate.
Ashly Mercer is a Monster Hunter in a family of Hunters and she is under constant control and observation by her father. She is the chicken of the family and is supposed to learn to hunt, but he lets her do nothing and only keeps breaking his promises. So Ashly is not only frustrated, but also ready for something else! Something real and something the woman she just met, gave her! This woman seems to be more than just a casual acquaintance for one night. She can't forget Her. She doesn't want to forget Her!
It is a twisted love story of Rias and Ashly. It takes a long time before they can decide whether they will be able to bring their two very different worlds together or even understand each other! We meet all the beloved characters from Terabend again and heartwarming, wonderful and scary things happen to them! It's exciting until the end!
Thanks to Bold Stroke Books, Elena Abbott for the ARC!
I was lucky enough to receive an arc of this through NetGalley
I enjoyed certain aspects of this a lot.
I'm always a sucker for forbidden love and this has it front and center which is a really big hook. It could have been drawn out and handled a little more delicately to draw readers into it more, but overall it was good!
I can never get enough trans and non binary representation in books, so this definitely gets a big thumbs up on that front as there is plenty of it here!
The supernatural themes were all really fun and intriguing. I got Buffy the Vampire Slayer vibes from the storyline and characters which was perfect!
I really enjoyed the intimate scenes between Ashly and Rias, I think they were handled very well and there was just enough spice to fit the length of the book in my opinion.
Regarding the negatives, I feel like the whole story would benefit from a bit more world building and character development. As much as I wanted to love some of the characters, especially the kick-ass fmcs, I never really felt it because I still don't really feel like I know them. The same goes for some of the side characters, most have them had so much potential to be amazing, but fell a little short for me.
I have a soft spot for fantasy books and this one wasn't bad, but not my favorite. I love supernatural themes and enjoyed the representation of non binary and trans characters.

When her magic begins to act out of control, and she comes out of hiding. She meets Ashly and falls in love. While fighting for a life on her own terms, she meets Rias and discovers possibilities she never considered. Together their paths lead back to the supernatural sanctuary of Terabend. They both have choices to make individually and together. The romance between them was written well, but it did need more world building and character building.
Overall, it was a decent book and had me wanting to know more, but it fell short in some places. I received an ARC from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
Definitely some thoughts on this one, though it'll be tricky without talking about spoilers.
I'll start off by saying I think this book hangs well with the other two in the series. It's well-paced and well-written. The romance between the two main characters as it bloomed I think was the best of the three.
Some of what makes this book even more interesting is the ways it weaves in with the first two books. While it can be read standalone, I highly recommend reading the first two books first, as it helps make this one even more impactful.
Now, on to the rating. There are a few parts of the plot that I think do take away from the relationship in ways that made me struggle as a reader to believe the characters would stay together. Unfortunately, it took me out a bit as I thought "hold on, would our MC actually be able to allow that?"
Fans of Buffy or Supernatural would enjoy this one, I think.
Will they tell their secrets or will they keep each other in denial to the very last minute when it actually matters. The fantasy aspects were fine but underwhelming. The relationship was as cute as it was frustrating. I did like the twist of the reveal of where the monster hunter's sibling went. Pacing was good. Writing was a little show not tell-esque but it's fine.
Really engaging characters, unique paranormal story and beautiful romances. A supernatural community based in DEI . Hatred, greed, ignorance, and abuse lose to honor, dignity, inclusion, and love
I love a sapphic paranormal romance. This has strong Supernatural vibes. The last book of a trilogy that could be read as a stand alone but honestly is best read in series order to completely feel the emotional arc as Natalie plays an important role.
