I’ve just been drafted onto the one NHL franchise that never should’ve the Bangor Badgers.
The team is on the cusp of failure and the only thing lower than their number of wins last season is their ticket sales. But thanks to me, that’s all about to change. Nothing will stand in my way of turning us into a winning team…
Until a stranger who gives me the hottest kiss of my life turns out to be my new skate coach.
Blakely Wren is gorgeous, funny, and brilliant on the ice. Her figure skating days have made her a perfect asset for the Badgers, and her take-no-prisoners attitude has me signing up for more lessons than necessary.
Things heat up between us the more time we spend on the ice, and soon it’s not just the Stanley Cup I want to win this season—it’s her heart.
Only problem? She’s completely off-limits and has a toxic past that’s made her wary of all things relationship. She’s hiding something too, and her secret is big enough to put both our jobs on the line.
And in the end, I’ll have to choose—the girl of my dreams or the career I’ve worked my entire life for.

So my interest was actually piqued when Samantha Whiskey claimed in her newsletter that she had hired an editor for this book, because so many of her books in the past were error strewn minefields.
BUT I’m only 5 pages in and I’ve already highlighted SEVEN entire sentences with grammatical errors, clunky sentence structure, MISSING WORDS, and incomplete thoughts crammed together to create freakishly disjointed sentences. I’ve made some of these highlights public and explained why they’re shite in the notes if you want to see it with your own eyes and save yourself from this unnecessary frustration.
BUT the most egregious slight of them all was the 3 separate instances of wildly incorrect facts about hockey. This is about her 20th hockey book so you’d think she would know by now that 11 goals and 39 assists in a season would not qualify a college player for “playmaker of the year,” because those stats aren’t exceptional and “playmaker of the year” isn’t a thing. Also, she wrote about everyone being drafted onto one team and that’s not how the draft fucking works unless it’s an expansion team which it wasn’t. AND the draft is in JUNE, so they wouldn’t be there a week later to get some practice in before preseason, which is in SEPTEMBER. JFC, just put in the effort to Google what you are choosing to write about before you spew hot garbage that is an immediate tell that you don’t know WTF you’re talking about. It’s an insult to our intelligence as readers and hockey fans.
So I checked the title pages and NO EDITOR is listed.
WHY FUCKING LIE ABOUT HIRING AN EDITOR when we all have eyes and can clearly see the lack of editing that leaps off the page??????
I want my dollar back because this is false advertising. Stop selling defective products. I’m DONE with letting authors get away with selling us their attempts to shine shit.
this was shit sorry. the writing was extremely mid, the author kept trying to make sure the mmc was thinking in a very respectful, feminist, politically correct way, all the time. i LIKE when a character is all these things, but that should be shown through their actions not spelled out right every chapter. example: i would love to have a consensual night with her. WHO TF thinks that way? like, why put the word consensual there, it is a given, i didnt think the mmc was thinking about graping her, like, why. anyway yea that threw me off a bunch of times.
my other issue is how deeply in love and how well they know each other, and the “found family” yada yada within 3 months. pls. be realistic here. Your DREAM team since HIGH SCHOOL wants u and u say u dont care bc the girl yk 3 months AND JUST FIGURED OUT SHE WAS LYING BTW has family there. get a backbone.
my other problem, THE LIE. why? like honestly i dont get it, its not even the relationship part which she was explaining herself that way; i wasnt being honest with myself about my feelings, i was scared and thus did not tell you. Even if you were simply friends, i would be upset and HURT if a friend did not tell me that. like whyyy?? sure u have ur reasons whatever. theres no way u keep that to urself for so long but not even THINK ONCE his perspective? that she found it weird he was thinking of his career?? girl bye.
anyway i would not read again thank god it was a small book

A solid read with the greenest of green flags MMC. ______________________ Samantha knows how to write hockey romance, that's a given, but this series has a different feel to it. I love how the team is starting from the bottom, growing not only as a team but as a group and family. The three girls have the work they deserve based on their own merits, the men accepting the teachings of a younger figure skating, the respect from the veterans... It makes for an awesome vibe.
Lawson was a cocky but rendering MMC. He was also such a green flag, but having a single mom and a younger sister, he better be. He was a player, but the second he met Blakely he was so locked in a VS angel could have proposed and he wouldn't even notice. Consent was the main theme too, GREEN! How he never pushed, how he valued her career and her teachings, being cocky but listening... loved him down.
Blakely annoyed me a little with the whole secret thing, I could understand it to a certain degree, but the way Samantha developed it was perfect and it made for the perfect ending point. Also, the love confession...OBSESSED.
4.5/5⭐️ Lawson is attracted to Blakely right from the first moment he sees her, but his priority and first love is hockey. To his surprise, she is his skate coach with the Bangor Badgers team.
They decide on a deal whereby he will help her get rid of her clingy ex boyfriend Brian. Soon, their friendship strengthens and the deal becomes something more.
I liked how Lawson is big on getting consent, and how he is always there for her when she needs anything, from something small like coffee to something big like keeping her safe. Due to her previous experience, Blakely is hesitant to start a new relationship and I loved how Lawson paces himself to allow her to be comfortable in their new “non” relationship before they progress further.
On another note, I loved Coach Hardin for his soft approach which earns him respect instead of outright fear from his team. The team dynamics definitely grew on me, even the serious Clay.
Hockey Hot Shot + Former Figure Skater (Secret Coach’s Daughter) = A Spicy Kickoff To A New Series
Whiskey has spun off a fabulous new hockey series set in Bangor, Maine. We have instant chemistry with a slightly forbidden coworker romance between first overall draft pick rookie player and his skate coach, who has a big secret… she is also his head coach’s daughter! Neither wants a relationship, but in the world of romancelandia there is no more damning of a statement to set Cupid in motion. This is a truly delightful romp to enjoy.
kindle: 3.5⭐️ once we got past his insufferable ego in the first couple chapters and he magically transformed into an entirely different person, lawson was the perfect book bf. this was for sure a cute/fun read ……and i will definitely forget about it almost immediately
also: don’t get my wrong, everything i know about hockey i’ve learned in romance novels, but even i could tell you this book was not an accurate representation of professional hockey. do i particularly care about that? not at all. but other reviewers have pointed it out and they’re not wrong. if that would bother you, this isn’t the book for you
Samantha Whiskey knows how to write hockey romance and you'd think after all her other books the same tropes would get boring, but she finds a way to keep me reading! I will say, I'm starting to tire of the "we're dating, but not officially because we're afraid to communicate" trope. Also, not of fan of these new covers she's going with for this series. Excited to start Nash and Reese's book.
Samantha Whiskey is my exception for reading romance novels that are under 300 pages. She is able to tell the whole story without it feeling super rushed. Banter is always 10/10.
It just wasn’t great. There were multiple grammatical and consistency errors, the MMC got super mad over something that (I felt) the FMC was legitimately holding back (massive career impact) which annoyed me. Don’t think this is the series for me.
If you want a simple easy read that is full of standard romance troupes, mixed with hockey, then this book won't disappoint. If you are expecting great literature, a well-edited story, and to avoid aggravation with situations just not being realistically believable, then don't read this one. The fake-dating troupe was minimal at best, there is a bit of a found-family, and there is certainly the third act miscommunication / "break-up" with reunification.
This lie-by-omission / miscommunication was not a secret from the reader and the reveal seemed overly dramatic, though also handled quite maturely. More mature than I would expect of some 20-something year olds. That's right, all the the main characters are in their early twenties ... the rookie (Lawson) and the love interest (Blakely) are fresh out of college. He was just drafted as a 1st round NHL pick, while she just graduated (if a degree was given, i have no idea in what) to get her dream job as a skate coach for the team. This team is in a massive losing streak, but the coach (Blakely's father) was never fired - instead the team was sold and the new owner is so very nice he and has hired all these brand new people with very little experience to help turn the team around.
Meanwhile, Blakely has a toxic ex. After a few rounds with Lawson, she realizes she is better than him and finally stands up to him after he continually stalks her. She never goes to the police, because "he isn't breaking any laws". Yes, girl, he was: 10+ calls a day, hundreds of text messages, showing up at your house (and trying to get in) when you are not there is stalking and harassment. Could calling the police make him angry - maybe. But she should have gone to the police to at least document the behavior and start a file of his pattern of behavior. But she didn't and that's ok because it all worked out. My fear is that now a young women in a similar situation may read this book and not do what needs to be done to protect herself (or others) because "it will work out". Not everyone has the connections that Blakely has to solve her stalker problems, so this silent endorsement of men's bad attitudes and not holding them accountable aggravates me.
I read this in less than 24 hours as I was planning on attending a hockey-game and figured why not, it was a good filler until I picked up my next book. And while it was an easy read and parts were fun, I kept finding myself snatched back to reality by all the little things that just didn't jive well. (And OMG, if she worried her bottom lip any more I wouldn't be surprised if it fell off!)
If you’re a fan of romance with burgeoning friendship, a dash of forbidden love, and the high-stakes excitement of professional hockey, Lawson by Samantha Whiskey will have you hooked from the first page.
The story centers around Blakely, a talented figure skater coach who joins Badgers as the skating coach. Her father is the head coach of the struggling NHL team, and they work together to transform the team into champions. One of things I loved about Blakely is the fact that while she lived for hockey and could have used her connections… She went after the job and got it on her own merit by not using her dad’s name. Which leads to the hidden identity portion of the romance.
Lawson is the team’s rising rookie star who lives and breathes the game. And while he had his heart set on the Seattle Sharks, life worked out a little differently. From the moment Lawson and Blakely meet, their connection is electric, but their romance is fraught with complications. Their budding relationship toes the line of propriety, complicated by team dynamics, her father’s role as head coach, and the looming threat of him discovering who she truly is. The forbidden nature of their bond creates a delicious tension, keeping readers on the edge of their seats.
The book doesn’t just excel in romance—it also shines in its portrayal of friendship and teamwork. Blakely has an incredible set of girlfriends who offer, humor, warmth, and fierce loyalty to the story. Meanwhile, the hockey team’s start of evolution from a group of misfits to a unified brotherhood adds depth and plenty of laugh-out-loud moments. These Badgers are under new ownership, and have yet to create the team dynamic on or off the ice because of all the upheaval happening.
Samantha Whiskey seamlessly blends the thrill of NHL games with heartfelt character interactions, creating a story that’s as much about personal growth as it is about love. The hidden identity trope is expertly handled, especially when the truth comes out. Whiskey blends the intensity of the game with tender, introspective moments, creating a story that’s as much about personal growth and resilience as it is about love.
Lawson is an absolute treat for readers who enjoy hockey romances, forbidden love, and stories where the supporting cast is as compelling as the main characters. With its heartfelt moments, this book will leave you cheering for the team and the romance.
When I received the email a few weeks ago saying that Samantha Whiskey was starting a new hockey series, I was delighted! And then to find out it was the team that Crossland won in the poker game (along with the love of his life)? All In. So I was going into this with high expectations and... if you couldn't tell from the rating, I got exactly what I wanted.
As a hockey fan, Samantha Whiskey gets that right in her hockey romances. While not all hockey romances have a lot of the hockey in them, this one does. Our FMC, Blakely, is not only the head coach's daughter (which she keeps from our MMC until relatively late in the book, so his reaction is completely valid), but she's also the team's new skating coach. Our MMC, Lawson, is the new hotshot rookie who was drafted at the number 1 spot to go to... Bangor, ME. The worst team in the league. (Thinking about it, the fact that he was eligible for the draft reminds me how young he is and that brings up a whole other mess of questions...) He's determined to turn them around and honestly, is a cocky little shit at times, but he's a team player.
Part of me loves the fact that this is set in Bangor - I've spent time up there and love the area, and while it's a big city in Maine, it's not a huge metropolis and I got the feeling that it was supposed to be that. Like the fact that the captain apparently has an estate that he probably dropped $2M on... yeah. That's not believable at all. Something around that range will get you an apartment or condo complex, not just an individual unit or house. I mean, maybe Stephen King's house is worth that much now, but it definitely wasn't that much when he bought it. But honestly, that's me just nitpicking things.
One of my biggest issues is Okay, end of rant.
All that said, I am really looking forward to the rest of this series - I may have already preordered the next book... but that's not a surprise bc she is an auto-buy for me. Whatever she writes, I will devour and ask for more. 🤣
I’m so happy Samantha Whiskey is back in her hockey era and I loved this one so much! “Lawson” is a steamy, swoony and amazing start to the “Bangor Badgers” series.
Lawson Wolfe is the number one draft pick for the upcoming season and being the first pick usually means that you’re going to a team that finished at the bottom. Lawson finds himself in Bangor, Maine and his new team has some work to do. And that starts with bringing in a coach to help them skate faster. Blakely Wren is a figure skater and knows her way around the rink and is there to help the Badgers be the best in the league. And both are surprised to see each other at the rink, especially since they had met before a bar and now will be working together. Neither wants a relationship but as they spend time together, it’s clear they are still attracted to each other.
I loved how this story started and could not put it down. Lawson is a confident man, on and off the ice, and that shines throughout the book. He puts in the work to be the best hockey player he can be and is there for his new teammates. I loved how he stepped up to help Blakely in the bar, even before he knew who she was. It showed what kind of person he is. Blakely is someone I could see myself being friends with in real life. She’s caring, smart and is a baddie on the ice with her skills. Her internal connection to the Badgers was great and one of my favorite tropes. The chemistry Lawson and Blakely had was instant from the start and only grew as the story went on. I loved their banter and the push/pull they had towards each other. I couldn’t get enough of these two and loved their story. The easter eggs we get for the next books has me counting down the days until they’re released.
Blakely Wren, figure skater turned NHL skate coach, is gearing up for her first day on the job when she has a run-in with her toxic ex. Noticing her distress, Lawson Wolfe quickly jumps in and becomes her hero. But after sharing just one kiss, their night ends abruptly when Lawson’s teammate intervenes. On repeat in his head, Lawson can’t seem to get Blakely out of his mind so you can imagine his shock when he bumps into her again at the stadium. The stadium of the team Lawson just got picked up by and coincidentally the team Blakely just took a job with. Now his new skate coach, the two agree on friends. Lawson will help keep her toxic ex away; in return, he gets to spend time with her. But the more time they spend together the closer they get and the harder it becomes for Blakely to keep her secret.
I screamed with excitement when I saw a new hockey series by Samantha Whiskey. Being back in a hockey world written by her felt like putting on my favorite hoodie and I am here for it. Blakely and Lawson’s story starts off with a quick connection that turns into friendship and eventually into more. Lawson’s protectiveness and desire to be someone Blakely can depend on is obvious from the very start and just continues to grow with their connection. While Blakely’s past relationship has left her apprehensive, she doesn’t lack confidence. And that confidence is the perfect match for Lawson’s ego along with his fellow teamates’. This story will keep you entertained with the perfect sprinkle of tension and drama.

A friends to lovers’ ice hockey romance as Blakely Wren starts a new job as skating coach with the Bangor Badgers just as Lawson Wolfe was drafted by the team. Blakely was thrilled to be a badger while Lawson was a little bit more downhearted, he’d been aiming higher than the Badgers who were arguably the worst team in the league, but he had just enough arrogance and self belief that he could take them all the way to the Stanley cup. They’d met in a bar not knowing their connection when an aggressive ex was hassling Blakely and Lawson, showing his inner golden retriever, stepped in, claiming her and they shared a kiss. Till they met the next day at the rink, and he learnt she was one of his new coaches.
This was a fun and easy read despite some angst from Blakely’s stalker ex-boyfriend who was determined to win her back. They had been a long-term relationship throughout college, now he needed her to advance his career and tried to bully her into helping him. In an attempt to keep him at bay Blakely and Lawson semi fake date on the down low but gradually their friendship deepens into love, but Lawson doesn’t know the major secret she’s keeping from all but a select few. I loved their relationship development. Their banter was next level as they flirted with each other and for all his confidence that at times came across as arrogance, Lawson was a genuinely nice guy who loved his mum and sister and was determined to give his team his all. I would’ve liked more of a dramatic conclusion to the stalker element which all felt a bit anticlimactic, but I enjoy the secondary characters and all the clues for future pairings.
Blakely Wren was hired by her employer to whip their hockey team into shape and get them skate ready for the upcoming season. Being a former ice skater makes her perfect for the job, it's the perfect transition from her old life. A fresh new start and nothing is going to get in her way from making it happen...
The pages of Lawson will entertain you, make your heart skip a beat and leave you with an unshakable smile on your face. This new hockey world that Ms. Whiskey has created has the makings of becoming a new favorite of mine, I mean what is not to love about a new crop of hockey stars finding their forever's!
These two had my attention in a matter of a few sentences and they held it tightly until the last page found me. Their story was so good, rich with feeling, brimming with steamy bits and of course came with two characters that I couldn't take my eyes off of...it's was quite an addictive venture. They were made for one another, even if they didn't buy into that fact right off. Both were focused on other things and love was the furthest thing from their minds...but eventually it found them. And that's when things started to get really good!
If you like sports romances then I highly suggest you check this new series out, I promise these two will leave your heart happy and aching for more!
I requested an advanced copy of this title from the publisher and I am voluntarily leaving my honest and unbiased opinion.
I didn't even make it past chapter 1. I devoured Samantha Whiskey's Sharks and Reapers series! The characters, plots, and the hockey was always on point. So why is it chapter one and this book gets how the NHL draft works completely WRONG! It is my #1 Hockey Romance pet peeve. Just a few pages in and the world is totally invalidated to me, and as a hockey fan first and romance reader second, it's insulting when authors don't take ten minutes to look up how the NHL draft works. US and Canadian draft eligibility cuts off at 20 years old. Meaning, college sophomores. And very very few draft picks go straight to their NHL team, most hang out in the AHL affiliate first. Less than 70% of first round picks even make it to the NHL. And no team is gonna have a slew of rookies starting all at once straight from the draft. That's not how it works. I'm willing to suspend a LOT of disbelief in a RomCom. That's the beauty of them. But this initial team set up went too far off the rails for me.
I LOVE Samantha Whiskey and her writing. One of my top recommended Hockey Romance writers. But this one broke my heart and shattered my trust. Still, I can't give it under 3 stars. That wouldn't be fair to the author or to other readers. This particular hang up is mine. And I'm sure there are plenty of romance readers who like hockey who couldn't care less if the logistics of the draft are mucked up.
“What the f*ck am I thinking? I’m either ready to throttle Lawson or climb him at any given moment, neither of which indicates that we'd be able to pull off some ridiculous romcom-worthy ruse in order to scare away my narcissistic ex.”
Lawson | Samantha Whiskey | Bangor Badgers 1
Review: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5, 🌶️🌶️🌶️/5
“I'm on fire. This man gets me hot in so many different ways, one is needy and achy and the other is angry and explosive.”
Read this if you love: hockey romance | secret relationship | hidden identity | coach x player | he falls first
“Somehow, he’s smart enough for the both of us, and it makes me melt for him just a little bit more.”
This one sucked me in from the beginning because for some reason I was expecting that there would be more physically keeping Lawson and Blakley apart. I loved that this wasn’t the case because we got to see their relationship bloom from a real place with two people as friends. And while a pseudo-fake dating promise might have been their excuse to spend time together, they didn’t need it because they naturally ended up in a relationship. I really enjoyed the introduction to the other characters and what I hope will be more books in this series.
Thank you @authorsamanthawhiskey and @literallyyourspr for the eARC. I voluntarily read an early copy of this book.
I've been reading Samantha Whiskey's books for a while now and I think that Lawson Wolfe might just be her best MMC yet. Strong, yet kind... arrogant, yet humble... just a golden retriever with Blakely.
I'm also in love with this new team - rather than being placed in a position of strength like her previous two hockey teams, this team is an underdog. A team looking to grow. As she writes this series, she has places to go with both the men, the women, and the TEAM.
I can't wait to keep reading - and Nash and Reece are up next!
There were some editorial issues in the book, but that's to be expected as an ARC copy. Also, if you're reading this to learn about hockey and some of it's elements, you might be reading the wrong book. The found family element is important - and the team creates this found family. Hockey is the chosen sport, and while the stats might be a little off, for me - it's less about the game play and elements of that as it is about the relationship of the team, the men on the team, and the women in the sphere of the team.
Samantha is a go-to author for me. She's a classic-style contemporary romance writer and continues to knock this out of the park! She's like a great sorbet after a spicy meal - clean, refreshing, with just enough flavor to make you go "whoo!"
Blakely: her secret is big and could cause hurt Lawson has just one goal, and that is not a girl
A new hockey era has arrived This story is refreshing and entertaining at the same time. Lawson is a determined and really good hockey player. He has a goal and is focused to reach said goal. Nothing and no one can change that. But on his way he has to make a detour. Which has him bonding with a team he currently was traded to and has to make the best of it. He didn’t expect to meet a girl who could possibly stand in his way because she makes him want things he never wanted and felt before. But Blakely has a few secrets and a past relationship that has her being hesitant to open up too fast. Only working with Lawson and spending time has her slowly changing her opinion. But some secrets can be more hurtful when being kept too long. And when things grow a lot and Blakely has to come clean, it might be too late and could be a game changer in many directions. Two characters who have to find their way from pasts, goals and wants. A journey of discovering what they truly want and how to make that happen. Having to grow up, trusting in themself and giving a leap of faith. The introduction to the team and other characters and possibly future stories made me curious and excited.
There were some inconsistencies and inaccuracies that were very difficult for me to get past. Timelines, peoples ages, the flipping draft(!) to name a few.
Our MMC is supposed to be this cocky dude that is a total player until he meets 'her'. He calls her 'damsel' and she calls him 'hero' and it all makes me want to puke.
The author is flying this guy's green flag so high it becomes unbearable. I love consent and respect for women, but this is so OTT that I think the author is wanting some kind of special award for the most mentions of consent ever to be used in a book. Again, consent is awesome! But it is shoehorned into inner thoughts and dialogue and feels very unnatural by the 86th time.
It doesn't feel like we get to see any romantic feelings develop and are just told that they are friends, then lovers, then in love. I will say, the 3rd act separation had me siding with the MMC and I did like how he handled it with maturity.
In summation, it's adequate, but that's about it. I wouldn't recommend it because there are better books for people to spend their time on and I'm not reading the rest of the series.
Lawson and Blakely’s story is as awesome as a story can get!
Lawson just got traded to the Bangor Badgers in Maine. He meets Blakely when he’s in a bar with his new team. He rescues her from a guy who seems to be bothering her. He’s very cocky and egotistical, but a fun guy. They end up kissing, a whopper of a kiss I might add. Neither knows who the other is until the captain of the team calls Lawson and Blakely realizes who he is. Imagine the surprise on Lawson’s face when she ends up being a skating coach for the team the next day. They are torn because they are off limits to each other (or are they) but cannot stop thinking about one another. Blakely is having an issue with her ex, so she makes an agreement with Lawson to go to a few functions with her to make sure he knows she’s moved on, and in return, she will give him the private coaching he’s asked for. Lawson still doesn’t know who she really is. Will it be revealed? And how will he take it? You’ve got to read this book. It’s full of anticipation, heat, steam and so much more!
“I swear this woman was made in some celestial generator, popping out every quality and endearing characteristic I didn't know I was a sucker for.” I’ve yet to read a Samantha Whiskey hockey romance that I didn’t immediately fall for. The Bangor Badgers are her series and it started off Lawson, new to the team and first draft pick. Lawson sweeps in to help a woman at a bar, ready to be her hero and so much more until he finds out just who she is.
Blakely Wren is a figure skating champion and the new skate coach for the Bangor Badgers, so having any sort of relationship with a player is taboo. But when she continuously seeks him out for help it’s tough to deny their attraction.
Lawson and Blakely were a cute duo. Lawson wanted to make sure she trusted him and felt safe considering her past relationships and he did that in a perfect way! They were a great start to this new team and I’m so excited for what’s to come! Thank you @authorsamanthawhiskey and @literallyyourspr for the ARC! Rating:⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 🔥: “If I was awake, I don't think I’d have the courage to do what I'm doing,”
@authorsamanthawhiskey is in her new hockey era and I am loving it so much 😍 I discovered @authorsamanthawhiskey with the Carolina Reapers and She's one of my auto-read since ! I am planning to reread the Carolina Reapers during my Christmas vacation and I can’t wait ! This story is refreshing in the best way ! I loved that Blakely was directly on the ice dith the team, it brought someting more. These two held my attention all through the book. Their story was really good,I loved how they fell naturally into something more even if it wasn’t in their plans. Lawson gave out a perfect mix of Golden retriever vibes and cocky playboy ! He was perfect for Blakely and made sure to be patient and considering of her !
Big thanks to @authorsamanthawhiskey for giving out some ARCs to her readers 🩷 !
