Even though its yuri content is quite small at present, this continues to be an interesting little change of pace. Most of this volume is spent dealing with the fallout of all those revelations from the preceding one and how Miko inserted herself into Hinako’s life.

Miko and Shiori continue to be at odds, but honestly it’s because they’re too much alike. Miko cares for Hinako and wants her to live, as does Shiori. Now, Miko is repressing her urge to eat Hinako, while Shiori is just trying to ripen her, but small point of contention there.

This makes for an interesting dynamic between the trio. Miko is a lot older than it seemed and while her fondness for Hinako is genuine, and Hinako truly appreciates it, we see that it is born out of guilt for not being able to grant a prayer. Even though she’s not precisely a deity.

The way this mingles in Japanese folklore remains quite enjoyable. Miko was captured yet grew to like humans and took residence at a shrine, while Shiori is a Japanese mermaid, which means her true form is particularly hideous. They are the same, yet very different.

If you want brisk action, this is not the volume. It’s more like a character study with monsters, which is fine by me. There’s something heartbreaking about the way Hinako views her own life - her desire for Miko and Shiori to be friends so they have one another after she’s gone feels more immediate than it should.

Even Shiori’s attempt to make things better by going to the seaside are warped by Hinako’s tragedy. There’s a sense that Shiori is trying to help the best way she knows how, but that doesn’t quite consider Hinako enough.

Combine with even more hints about what’s going on here - how is it that Hinako hasn’t been pursued by monsters all her life precisely? - and you have a perfectly satisfying volume, even without a hint of romance.

4 stars - keeps on being a fun digression from traditional yuri stories, while also being strongly written to boot. Slow, but not boring.

I still like this series but this time I feel like nothing important or new happened here. most of this volume wraps up all thing we get in the preceding one. as someone wrote, it was like reading an interlude

this volume felt a little slow it comparison to the first two. the focus goes back to what we saw in the first volume, and yet, I feel like nothing of consequence happened here.

Este volumen se sentía un poco más como de transición, y espero que no se centren tanto en Miko para los siguientes volúmenes porque prefiero ver a las protagonistas la verdad JAJAJAJJAJAJAJAJAJJA

Love the depth of this volume

I was impressed with Miko-chan's character development in this volume. I've read other series in which the main character's friend had a similar competitive dynamic with the love interest. However, the friend in that series had a disappointingly shallow personality, which ended up being more annoying than anything. I was afraid that would be the case here. My worries turned out to be entirely unnecessary. The development of Miko-chan's character in this volume was compelling and well thought-out. I love that the author chose to flesh out this character as much as they did.

Another thing I appreciate about this volume is the honest way that Hinako's depression is portrayed. At one point, she is pictured walking along a sunny beach full of happy families. To someone unfamiliar with depression, it might seem like this could not fail to lift her spirits. However, the sight of so many happy families is a trigger to Hinako because she no longer has one. This is such a relatable and real experience.

It was also so touching when Shiori notices how Hinako is reacting. She says something that I found incredibly touching, "There's no sense in burning your eyes with such radiance..." and later, "Until the day you can once again stroll about under the sun with a smile on your face, allow me to provide the shade you need." This represents the way someone suffering from depression might struggle with being surrounded by an overly cheerful mood. Shiori symbolically offers her a straw hat, offering to be a buffer between her and her triggers. This scene choked me up. <3

Where vol 2 delivered a Big Plot Reveal, here’s where we get the actual significance and resolution to that move. And it’s a pretty poignant and special resolution. There’s real grace and care there. I’m confused why some readers are acting pretty meh about that. Seems weird.

Then the volume slows and quiets things down, taking its time in ways sweetly and playfully charming, wisely focusing on character and relationship dynamics. And it doesn’t rush it. After vol 2 moving a touch too quick, I liked this shift and think it’s what was needed to make Miko and Saoichi even better and more interesting characters as well as connect us a little more to them. The characters and their relationships with each other are becoming richer and more intricate. And, perhaps most importantly, we’re learning more about Hinako’s internal life.

While the first third delivers some of this in understandably dramatic fashion, the rest is not delivered in any overly flashy way. It’s more quietly resonant, where the thoughts, desires, and pains of someone wading through depression, grief, and mortality are gently, even patiently, nurtured along.

There’s no need to rush this kind of thing. Hell, we should actively resist rushing it. And we certainly shouldn’t gloss over it in our quest for more savory fair. How, ahem, monstrous of us to do so. Slow down; settle in; see and listen to what Hinako is experiencing, doing, and thinking. It’s quite special. And it’s important for us to know how to do this for ourselves and for the Hinakos in our lives.

Well I feel kind of let down with this volume after how much I loved the first two volumes. I feel like the series is starting to shift away from the themes of Hinakos trauma and sadness and how its manifested into a depression so deep she doesn’t even care if she lives or dies, in fact she wants to die and welcomes death, instead turning into a love triangle between her Shiori and Miko(I really really want to be wrong) I did not hate this volume and continue to find the art stunning but I did not find it as captivating as the first two volumes it was just ok for me. Hoping for volume four to prove me wrong on the love triangle because honestly Shiori and Miko fighting over Hinako like she’s not even there was extremely grating.

I wanted to rate this 4 stars, because:
- Miko lives!
- the cover!
- It's getting more into the mystery, which always puts me into detective-mode and I LOVE making theories!

However, I don't like Hinako spending more alone time with Shiori, going yet on another date, and Miko can't join. I really don't ship these two (yes, I know they'll be endgame), and I hate Shiori. She's nothing but selfish.

Still enjoying this series but I don't think this one was as good as the previous two. It wraps up a character arc pretty neatly but I hope it isn't the last time we interact with that character. I would love to see more growth from the main character but I don't know how long this series will run for.

This volume is mainly monsters arguing a lot. It's not bad, it's still engaging and interesting, but not much really happens in this volume.

It's a fun read, but, like Volume 2, doesn't come anywhere close to the weight and emotional intensity of the first volume. I hope the author can get back to that kind of narrative in later volumes.

After a huge twist in the last volume Hinako is forced to come to terms with a lot of heavy things and this makes a bunch of great character development happen. Like I can’t stress enough how amazingly written these characters are.
