A milkmaid, a princess, a wise woman, and a dentist face off with an ancient dragon to rescue the village from attacks within and without.
This book is a collaborative novel written by Patricia Atchison, Bonny Beswick, Isabel Cave, Abby Duncan, Kelly Komm, Kathleen Ladislaus, Alison McBain, Robert Proudfoot, Halli Reid, and Mafalda Rose following a Lintusen Press workshop at When Words Collide Writers' Conference in Calgary, AB.
I love the premise of how this book was created. To brainstorm a plot and have different writers each tell a piece of it from the points of view of a myriad of characters and bystanders sounds both challenging and delightful.
The authors in this book bring a range of abilities and voices to the narrative. Some are very simple, laying out plot points directly for the reader with little to no preamble. Some eloquently lead the reader to the next plot point through actions and dialogue. There is clearly an effort to collaborate on shared details, but the book does lack a certain coherence, with some chapters throwing in sudden big details that had never been hinted at before and others downplaying or disregarding items that had previously seemed very important. Shout-out to the wind chapter, which was a lovely side-quest into poetic prose.
With more coaching for the newer writers and more editorial oversight, this book could be so much more.
