Something is rotten in Seattle, where seven innocent people are dead from tainted cold medicine and some of the country's wealthiest CEOs are suffering from corporate espionage on an unprecedented scale. Dr. Paul Powers search for the truth turns him into the prime suspect and an international fugitive desperate to clear his name. But how do you catch a killer who knows exactly what you're thinking? H.S. Clark takes the reader on a wild ride along the cutting edge of medical technology and into the dark side of digital medicine.
I was excited about the idea of reading “Secret Thoughts” since I first joined Twitter back in April of 2013. Just the idea of technology advancing to the point that we could at last “read minds” is both fascinating and horrifying. So needless to say, this book for me was a must read from the start.
For those of us around in the early 80’s, you’ll recall that there wasn't much of a resolve to the motive(s) behind the Chicago cyanide poisonings other than the fact that medicine became tamper- proof and that was basically that. What drew me into Secret Thoughts almost immediately was that H.S Clark was going to offer me his take on the matter and, even better, use the story line to take me to places that might offer the explanation I’d been seeking for years.
How do you catch a killer who knows what you’re thinking? What a fantastic concept. I knew I would enjoy Secret Thoughts for that reason alone, but if you’re the kind of reader who requires more depth to your reads you will not be disappointed with this book. Secret Thoughts has just the right mix of narration and description to satisfy any craving for a good thriller. Additionally, I must say that H.S. Clark transcends the reading experience with gripping action and the kind of dialogue that breathes authentic life into his characters.
The characters are rich and possess passion and determination, exactly the way Joe Campbell describes the mythological hero, initially refusing the call to heroism but ultimate unable to deny it. Secret Thoughts is a thrilling nail-biter with twists and turns that even the seasoned thrill-seeker cannot foresee how it will all come together. Dr. Paul Powers and his assistant, Lin, are especially intriguing as multidimensional characters.
And just when it seems there is no way out, the truth is revealed, but only in a manner that Clark could pull off. I should also warn you that medical technology combined with the dark side of digital medicine will keep you awake at night calling out to read this page-turner with baited breath until the very end.

This is one of the most awful books I've read in years. People start dying of a first undiagnosed illness in Seattle. The deaths are finally deemed cyanide poisoning through product tampering. An anesthesiologist is a friend of one of the victims, also a doctor. Suddenly, he's compelled to investigate the deaths. Then he's accused of the deaths -- they have him on video doing the product tampering. He's released on bail and decides it's a good idea to go to Columbia (yes, the country, not the city) with some chick he just met to investigate further. Then the Colombian Cartel, the Russian Mob, and a flock of Monks get involved. Things get dicey, there's shootouts and 'stuff.'
In one of the most preposterous storylines I've read, there is barely nominal character development, and ridiculous scenes and situations, all moving so swiftly they blur into each other. I am very grateful the audio was only 6+ hours. BTW, the narration was atrocious.
The entire story was like a comic-book rendition of some half-baked TV show. One of the reviews I read said that the author clearly knows his medicine. How flawed. This was not a medical thriller; the author could have gleaned his deep knowledge from reading a few articles on the internet.
Secrets Thoughts is a fast-paced medical thriller that keeps the reader guessing to what is going on. Dr. Paul Powers, the protagonist, is concerned about some strange happenings concerning himself and other prominent people. They all seem to have come down with medical conditions that warrant MRIs. Dr Powers decides to delve into the cause of these ailments and how they are connected.
This is a thriller that mixes medical technology with power, greed and mysticism. Will Dr. powers find out the why, how and come out alive before the brain tumor he has kills him. He meets a beautiful, brilliant mathematician who provides some much needed help and solace in a difficult time.
A thoroughly enjoyable read by a talented and creative author. I look forward to reading his next book. I was given this book in exchange for an honest review.
Secret Thoughts is a fast paced modern thriller or murder mystery about cutting edge medical technology. The main character Paul, an anesthesiologist is a likeable fellow as are most of the characters in the book. Clark has created a nail-biter story all the way to the end. The book goes from Seattle and a product tampering with cyanide with 7 deaths to our hero tramping through the Colombia jungle. The read minds via MRI scan is a bit too farfetched for me but is a fun idea for a work of fiction. Over all this a fast reading suspense story that is short only 6 and half hours on my IPod download from Audible. This book makes a great fun break from more serious reading. Ernie Sprance did a good job narrating the book.
Secrets are usually kept hidden. Anesthesiologists are usually charged with putting people to sleep. Nothing is usual in this book by H.S. Clark and I liked that the author kept things unexpected. In Secret Thoughts, the main character is Dr. Paul Powers, anesthesiologist by trade, but when he is faced with his own medical crisis he quickly turns from doctor to sleuth. His physical ailment is not what turns him into a private investigator, it's the fact that many important people are getting a deadly prognosis and giving up their innermost secrets at the same time. I always like to learn a little something when I read and trust me, I will think twice about breathing deeply around picafentanyl-popping doctors!
I'm not exactly sure what code red is but I bet H.S.Clark does and I'd wager a bet that he'd know what to do if he heard that. This book was like Code Red was called in the E.R. and everyone ran to action- it was fast, furious, highly suspenseful and full of intense medical goobledegoop that was extremely interesting, even for this right-brained reader. I loved the experience of this book and looked forward to getting to it every night, reading until my Kindle fell on my face and I had to admit it was time to stop reading. Well done, H.S. Clark. This won't be the last I see of you!
This is a fast paced story of a heroic Doctor investigating the computerized world of medical technology. In an effort to prove his innocence he discovers a mind whirl of possibilities that an MRI scan can collect and manipulate. The on the fly medical treatments and genius use of what is available allows him to conquer the villains. Suspenseful and exciting! Another great story from H. S. Clark.
Sorry I stopped reading after a few chapters. So unbelievable. The Protagonist who is a physician doesn't show much emotion after being told he bas a brain tumor and then becomes a detective and an accused murderer which I'm sure he could have proven false from the beginning then not worrying much about his tumor has a hot romance which I didn't need to be described in such detail, we know how it's done. I quit at that chapter.
I enjoyed this book and would recommend it to anyone who enjoys a good mystery. The premise was that of the mysterious super mind of a figure unknown to the main character. Their are many different twists and turns, but in the end it's all tied together
This genre was totally out of the realm of my normal romance/YA reading. I really enjoyed it though. It kept me reading. I would love to read some more adventures of Dr. Paul Powers.

A sony version, audiobook, and a Spanish ebook version are coming soon. Any questions about Secret Thoughts: a Medical Thriller please ask me.
Secret Thoughts begins with a small child, seemingly having only a cold. It’s more than a cold and the reader is gripped by the frantic efforts of the mother to save the dying little girl. Thus begins a mystery from headlines. A cause is quickly found. The killer, however, is not and, we’re off and running with this thrilling book.
I was immediately involved in the story …. I live in Chicago and vividly remember the public panic here regarding the tampering of acetaminophen capsules in the early 1980s. Several innocent people died. Those murders have never been solved.
This is a short novel, just over six hours of listening, read nicely by Ernie Sprance. This is my first listen of Sprance narration, and I was surprised to learn that he has only one other audiobook recording on Audible. Based on this recording, I think, and hope, he’ll be around a while in that he even does a nice job on female voices.
An enjoyable, exciting listen. Well worth the credits.
This was by far one of the best medical thriller books I have read! It was well thought out and designed story. The delivery was superb and the uniqueness of the storyline captivating! I felt connected to the characters and felt the author developed them well and made the relationships believable.
As a nurse, sometimes I get skeptical reading books that deal with quite a bit of medical information because sometimes it is just not believable. Not sure on the authors background, but this was not the case on this book. I found situations not only realistic but very creative and resourceful!
If you are looking for a good book to read, something different and entirely unique…then read Secret Thoughts. Absolutely outstanding, riveting and each page will keep you turning to see what happens next!

Having been married to a ANESTHESIOLOGIST for over 30 years I have appreciated the intellectual phenomenon of a great mind. Dr. Clark is clearly multifaceted in his abilities to practice medicine and write such a fascinating thrillers. I am now onto his second book and hope his next on will be about ANESTHETIC MULTIPLE MISADVENTURES. JUSTCVA46@GMAIL.COM
