One of golf's most popular and funny personalities reveals the ups and downs of a life playing the world's most infuriating sport.
Professional golfer Andrew "Beef" Johnston has played in the world's biggest tournament, won big-money events, and sunk monster putts while fans were booming out his "BEEEEEEF!" On the downside, Beef has also duffed it, thinned it, and shanked it like every single person who's ever played the game. Because no matter who you are, golf can make you look like an idiot.
Golf is Hard reflects on Beef's early years at his local Pitch & Putt to his stellar career playing against the best on the greatest courses on the planet, taking you inside the world of professional golf like no book before. With painfully honest stories, Beef delves into the pressure of the profession, but also shares golfing advice and side-splitting behind-the-scenes insights to bring a new perspective to the game. What is Tiger Woods really like in the locker room? How did it feel to hit one of the worst shots in golf history in front of millions of viewers during The British Open? And just how many clubs has Beef broken through fits of rage and frustration during his illustrious career?
This is a book for everyone who has ever loved and loathed the game in equal measure but managed to see the funny side. After all, golf is really hard, so you might as well have a laugh about it along the way.
I don't follow golf and don't understand a lot of it but I read this book because of the author and my son bought it for me for Christmas. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I only heard of him about a year ago. I met him last October and he is indeed a lovely guy. It's a very easy read. There are a couple of chapters dealing with golf itself but it's mainly about the man himself and his struggles with the game and the media and expectations. I felt like I was sitting in a pub having a pint with him and he was telling his stories, it's that casual. If you're a golf fan, you'll love it and even if you're not you'll enjoy his story.
A wonderfully candid look at the game of golf from one of the 'characters' on the course. Thoroughly enjoyable throughout and brings the game into perspective for everyone who has attempted to play golf. It's hard.
Very easy read , interesting on the hard life of a golfer . I enjoyed reading about the character of the man , he certainly added life and character to the golf circuit and is missed. I just wish him a speedy recovery and gets back healthy and happy. What a great character.
Great book which makes me like beef more than I did, what a journey he’s been on, especially to show the resilience in which he has after several setbacks.
I thought this was a brave book from Beef. His problems with his mental and physical health have been discussed in the media to an extent but to read it from his point of view was interesting. I enjoyed all aspects of the book. The chapter written by his wife was a surprise and only added to the story. Very well written and in the way I assume Andrew speaks to his friends.
