Protected by generational magic for centuries, Amma believed her family home was impenetrable. But when a mysterious fire and ancient enemies wreak havoc during a family reunion, she’s forced to flee into the nearby forest with only a knapsack, a portal spell, and her two dear pet squirrels.
Suni had resigned himself to a fate of violence and wartime, despite an all-consuming desire to start a family of his own. After all, what sane woman would want a freakishly large, scarred male as her mate? However, when he stumbles upon an otherworldly witch wandering his village’s lands, he knows fate has finally granted his heart’s desire. But can their newfound union withstand the corrupted High Coven in an age-old battle of good versus evil?
Life is what you make it and nothing more. This is something I had to come to terms with as I struggled to find my place in this world.
I was born with a learning disability and no one could understand me but my older brother until I was almost eight years old. I was told my multiple teachers and school councilors that I was not going to graduate high school unless I went into a special program. In 2001 I proved them all wrong by graduating with a 3.5 and being accepted into Cal State University, Pomona.
Following the bad advice of my councilor I majored in animal science and after two years I had to drop out. For a while I wondered aimlessly and became homeless before I decided to give school one more try. Enrolling at Fullerton College I picked journalism to major in, why not I loved to read and write. In 2008 I graduated from California State University, Fullerton with my B.A. in Communication with an emphasis on journalism.
Of course life happens and I had to take a year off of everything to take care of my mom and younger brother. I thought I would never recover and would forever play catch up but then my older brother sat me down and told me that I needed to pursue my own dreams. So I started a blog and started posting reviews. It was fun but I was still missing something.
When author Valerie Twombly suggested I try my hand at writing I was skeptical that anyone would want to read stories from my head. I love fantasy and I fall in love with the most unique heroes. So between reading, working and taking care of my younger brother, I wrote my first novel and in 2014 I hit publish.
Not even a year later I have released my second novella and working hard to get the third one out. I have more faith in myself and hope to one day become a full-time author and blogger.
So I would like to tell those who have been told that they will never amount to anything that there is hope. You are only held down by your own limitations. Reach for what you want and fight to hold on to it.
There were some formatting and grammatical errors. Like the ?second? chapter was the same as the second half of the previous chapter. There were also some consistency issues. It was almost like it was a final draft but no one went back to clean it up. At one point there were similar statements made as if the author was teetering between the 2, but somehow they both got left in and it was a bit redundant. Speaking of dialogue, some of it was a bit juvenile. If not for the intimate scenes, I would think this was more of a YA novel, or at least written by someone young. Or the kind of superficial dialogue one comes up with when there's minimum word count criteria. There were still cute moments of good banter. I haven't given up on the series. Although I prefer my "mated aliens" more humanoid, I'm vested in the world building and story telling. Will they find the rest of the family? Is the mother still alive? What's up with the High Coven? I still want to find out.
2.25 Stars - I wish I could rate this story higher because I luv this world and have been anxiously awaiting a new installment in the series. It was great learning more about the family of witches that Jo, Shelly, and Amma are apart of as well as learning that Mia and Julian are cousins even if this contradicts info we were given in the two previous books. We also find out more about the last family celebration and what happened the night of the fateful fire. It's obvious the author struggled with this book, as some of its issues have to do with repetition, and continuity. It also suffers from not being proofed and edited in some way before being published. For example chapter two is a direct repeat of the last pages of chapter one.
Even with this books issues I'll read the next one in the series.
This is Amma and Suni’s story. Amma is third cousin to Mia in book 1 and first cousin to Jo and second cousin to Shelly in book 2. Amma and Jo were at the family ranch when the attack happened. Even though Amma left Earth only hours after Jo she arrived months later.
After Suni finds Amma he takes her to Jo and Shelly. However, soon after they arrive Black Magic witches from the Coven arrive to punish Jo for killing their friends.
I won’t tell detailed spoilers, but the human Good Witches survive.
The book was a quick read with a very compelling story. The heroine is on the search for family members and the hero is search for something more. I did not like that one of the chapters was a duplicate. Really looking forward to other books with this family of witches in this new world, especially the sea witch. This author continues to write books I immediately purchase instead of borrow, definitely a five star rating.
But I loved this series from the beginning and it don't matter the wait I'm like a moth to a flame. It's very few we'll written black sci-fi romance authors out here, and not all are good. But Ms. Woods is good. I'm was really excited because this book was long, gave a little more meat on the bones. So definitely a great read.
It’s been a while since I read the last book, so it took a minute to remember the story line up to this point. But it came back seamlessly. Can’t wait to find the rest of the clan and read their stories.
This was by far the best of the bunch. And that’s saying something, because all the others were great too. I thoroughly enjoyed the talking animals. And the leads were likable. Can’t wait for the next book!
I loved this , I enjoyed the entire series all the characters were well defined and the story flowed effortlessly. I really hope that this series continues as there is so much left unsaid .Kudos to the author please we need follow-up's
