They called it black gold. And it was worth killing for.
When Deputy Sheriff Latigo Smith trades the dusty hills of Texas for the wild promise of Colorado, he isn't just going home — he's riding straight into a powder keg. Colorado is booming. Railroads are slicing through the wilderness. Gold and silver are drawing fortune seekers by the thousands. And somewhere in the chaos, buried in the secrets of Latigo's own family, lies something far more valuable than any glittering ore.
But Latigo isn't the only one who's caught the scent.
When highwaymen ambush him on the trail, he puts them down hard and fast — making the kind of enemy who doesn't forgive and doesn't forget. Now, with a target on his back and a mystery pulling him deeper into Colorado's untamed frontier, Latigo must fight to survive long enough to uncover the truth about his family's past and the whispered legend of black gold that only a handful of men have ever heard. Then there's Joanna — a woman whose path was destined to cross his, and whose presence changes everything Latigo thought he wanted from this new life.
What follows is a sweeping tale of frontier grit, buried secrets, and a love forged in the fire of the American West — where the good guys don't just fight for what's right, they fight for what's theirs.

Beckoned back to his Colorado roots, Latigo Smith hires on to keep the railroad from getting robbed of supplies while they lay tracks. He is also a bit intrigued by the possibility of gold. Turns out Johanna is also intrigued by the gold. Their grandfathers had apparently found some and left clues. Between finding the outlaws and who is giving them the information about shipments, and keeping the peace amongst the workers, Latigo has his hands full.
I needed to read something for a book challenge. It was supposed to be in a genre I've never read. Since I have at least sampled most genres, I was stumped. Then I thought of Western novels. I found Latigo's Choice and gave it a try. The story has interesting characters and is well written. I am not converted to being a fan of Westerns but I was able to enjoy the story.
I hope this one turns into a long series! Great storyline and a very good read! I really enjoyed the rail road cart and when he put his horse on it! We had a old mine rail cart on the ranch when I was young and were always loading our ponies in it and pretending we were going places!
This was a good one. It only had one gratuitous failure on the part of the heroine that while moving the story forward, wasn't exactly what a smart person would do. You will know it when you see it.
Latigo's Choice was a different style western. It had action, suspense, and a few thrilling situations. It was an interesting enjoyable read. Looking for more from this author.
