Welcome to Hell’s Gate, where surviving an apocalyptic event is a regular Tuesday, but getting a second date is impossible.
Stay out of the city park past dusk, adhere to the curfew on Tuesdays, and whatever you do, keep the batteries in your UV flashlights charged.
Grace Walker is the city’s top PR specialist. Her job is to make Hell’s Gate look desirable to tourists and potential residents. An impossible task when every day could be the city’s last.
Unfortunately, even the best marketing strategies aren’t strong enough to fight against the rumours of vampires, werewolves, demons, and other monsters running around the city. Rumours that just happen to be true.
To make matters worse, the firm hires a new boss, who is inconveniently handsome, (and single), who has not only taken it upon himself to work on Grace’s campaign but has also gone behind her back and pitched a new marketing plan to the city.
She hates him, and the feelings seem mutual. Their rocky start leads to constant arguments, power struggles, and an inappropriate assistant who needs to be constantly kept in check.
None of this compares to the horrors of dating in your thirties.
Grace is finally ready to find love and is prepared to navigate the trenches of online dating. The only question is what will implode first? Work, the world, or her love life?

Welcome to Hell’s Gate, with a rapidly deflating population depending on how well you stocked your emergency preparedness bag 🚨
Grace is the city PR specialist in charge of making the city look habitable. She’s up against some strange and outright weird paranormal beings and occurrences. With survival being a must have skill, new residents aren’t dying to pack their bags and move in (iykyk 🪦) so the city hires a new boss to help the campaign.
Of course he has to handsome and they inevitably start off on the wrong foot. Can they work together to not only survive each other but bring life to the community?
I absolutely loved this paranormal romcom. It was unique and funny, super weird and it was just an enjoyable read! Dating is rocky IRL but I can’t even imagine going through what Grace does but it was so exciting to read her dating adventures!
Thank you to the author, Jolene Gettler, for an advanced epub of this book for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
This was a cute, quick paranormal romance, I finished it in less than a day. The MMC is handsome and positively masculine. The FMC is funny and independent. The normalcy of the paranormal disaster and potential death of living in Hell’s Gate was an interesting and funny take. Death by surprise vampiric video sex was hilarious and horrifying.
The secretary was absolutely obnoxious. And I think the lack of smut was weird since there were quite a few sex adjacent events/references. I kept waiting for something to happen between them and it just didn’t. 😩
Would I read it again, probably not. But, it was cute and quirky. It think it could be a good palate cleanser between heavier books.
Anticipated Publication Date: October 15, 2024

Thank you to the author for providing me with an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
This one was a difficult one for me to review. I finished it within a couple of days- not because I couldn’t put it down, but because it didn’t make me want to walk directly into the sea.
In the author’s acknowledgments, Gettler claims that she wrote the novel fully in two and a half weeks. This did not come as a surprise to me. It felt very first drafty. I know I was reading an uncorrected version of the novel- there were many spelling errors and misuses of idioms- but there was a lot of telling and not showing. There were also dialogue tags attributing speech to the wrong character, or sometimes it was unclear who was speaking at all, which was tough because this book is like 90% dialogue. I’m sure all of these will be corrected before publication, but beyond that, the writing style felt quite juvenile and took me out of what was a pretty decent plot.
I really like the premise of the book, and I think either in the hands of a more skilled writer or with a strong editing team, this could be a great book. I wanted them to dig more into the “why” and the history of Hell’s Gate. For as bonkers as this premise is, I didn’t find myself having a hard time suspending my disbelief. What I couldn’t reconcile with was the behaviour of EVERY EMPLOYEE at the PR firm. Every last one of them should be fired. Is there no HR department? I think there’s a fine line that you have to walk between funny and straight up sexual misconduct, and in this book, the line did not exist.
I know I just said that I had a problem with the egregious sexual content in the book, but now let me complain about the lack of sexual content in the book. Other than nobody is having sex in this romance novel. I’m not saying there must be sex scenes in a romance- there definitely doesn’t- but the main couple didn’t even KISS until the 99% mark. I’d like to say that this was a slow burn, but there was no burn.
All in all, this book has promise, but I feel it needs many more rewrites.
I want to try to give my thoughts throughout my read of this because it is an ARC that I recieved. 6% in and I am liking it so far. The world is set in a Hellscape and the threat of death lurks around every corner and around every minute. If the creatures aren't trying to kill you, the air you breathe certainly is.
29% I find Scarlett sweet but annoying. No one is that dumb and self absorbed right?
Finished. This book was cool but I actually wanted it to be longer. I wanted more world building and not a rush at the end. It was a little too predictable but that's not totally a bad thing. I liked reading it and I am happy that I got an ARC of this. I would love for it to be fleshed out a bit more though. How did the city become like this? More about the ad campaign that they are doing. More about them as characters. They never talk about the things they should be talking about.
ARC REVIEW - 5 ⭐️ This book was SO. GOOD. An amazing horror rom-com. The sprinkling of light horror throughout kept things very interesting. Don’t let the horror aspect steer you away if that’s not your normal genre, the emphasis of the story is more of a romance. Loved the characters & the banter was hilarious. I laughed out loud SO MANY times.
There could be 10 more books set in this Hell town and I would devour every single one!
I really enjoyed this book! It was different from what I normally read, so I quite really enjoyed & liked it!
Although the ending did feel a bit rushed I wanted more of the FMC & the MMC & the town / monsters all together!!
Other than that I loved how the world was different they literally lived in a place where monsters / demons / deadly airborne stuff happened so they had different alarms warning them in time do prepare for those threats.
I loved how the people came together and fought off monsters instead of waiting for the monster hunters to come (because they took quite a while to come to the scene)
Scarlett kinda bothered me there’s no way she was that dumb and clueless & then she had her moments where she said some smart things only to ruin the moment again 😆
I’m glad there was two happy endings at least here lol thought that was cute despite always being in survival mode!
This book was just brilliant! From start to finish, I was completely suckered in and loved the entire thing.
I should be clear. I hate romance books. I find them cringy, clichéd and overtly sappy. However, if you slap in an apocalyptic scenario where everybody just treats these things as a giant inconvenience, and a perfect style of humour, you'll have me hooked.
And that's what Jolene has done. She really has found and mastered this style of book. She is incredibly funny and I don't think I've read a book this quickly since the third Housemaid book. And where that left me a little disappointed, this one left me wanting more and in complete hysterics!
Until The World Ends was such a good read! I absolutely loved the idea of this town Hell's Gate and the storyline. The characters banter was cracking me up. Scarlett's character was hilarious, just so obliviously funny. It kept me intrigued from the first page, there were a few surprises and curveballs that had me like - no way 😮 It was incredibly fun reading a spooky rom-com!
⭐5/5 🌶️1/5
🖤"I want that too. It’s lame, but I want that happily ever after everyone chases after. Or at least where we live, happily until the world ends."🖤
This book was funny af. It had me laughing the whole damn time. The humor was dry and top tier. The monstrous city/Hells Gate setting gave it such a fun and refreshing vibe for a romcom.
Every day these characters were fighting for their lives from the paranormal and the fact that they just made it their normal lives was amazing. Somehow Grace’s love life managed to be more of a disaster than that. Seriously couldn’t put this book down and it was hysterical. I loved it 🥹
First let me say that this book is a good time! 🤘 So if you are needing something to make you laugh and pull you out of a slump this is it! 😆 It’s witty w/ dark humor & that’s just the greatest combination ever! 🖤
You follow Grace who does PR for Hells Gate the city she lives in that is surrounded with monsters. Her job is to get tourist to want to come to Hells Gate all while navigating a new boss, the doomsday dating app, & a deficient but hilarious assistant.
This is my favourite from this author so far! Such a cool yet cute concept and it was delivered so well. And yes, I'm a little in love with Mystery Man (IYKYK 😉)
It's not a spicy book but a great paranormal love story. I love this book. it was light and fun. it was such an easy read, the writing flowed so nicely it just drew you right in to the story! definitely a recommend for any Supernatural, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, romcom fans!
This was nothing like I expected, and somehow it became one of my favorite reads 😂💜
Set in Hell's Gate, where stuff of nightmares are actually alive, we follow our FMC, Grace, who's looking to dip her feet into the dating pool. As she goes on dates with men she has matched with on the Doomsday Dating app, she finds out the hard way that dating in Hell's Gate ends up in two ways: your date either gets killed by a monster, or your date is the monster. As her new boss gets settled in the office, she now has to get through her dislike for him and them working together to promote the quaint town of Hell's Gate. How ever will Grace be able to get over her dating curse, and work for her enemy at the same time?
⭐ Rating Criteria ⭐
💜 Plot:
I loved the premise of this book. I honestly have not heard of any book with this kind of plot before, therefore I'll label this as an original. The story was so engaging, and I could not get enough of it. I was sucked into the story right away because of how interesting I found it to be. For the horror/paranormal aspect of this, it was amazingly written. It was descriptive, and helped my imaginative brain vividly picture out the scenes that happened. As for the character interactions, I really liked how the banter and tension was written. I thought the author captured those emotions really well on paper.
💜 Characters:
I loved all the characters, except for Grace's assistant, Scarlett, who just got better towards the end. I'm sorry, but she was insufferable and she didn't get any social cues at all. I know she was written that way, but I couldn't help but want to pull my hair out every time she came into the scene. But aside from her, they were all great. I loved the chemistry between Grace and Archer. I thought their tension and banters were amusing, and I looked forward to their interactions as I read the book. I also thought their romance was fleshed out well, and everything that happened between them just made their pairing even better.
💜 Overall:
I picked this up because, just from the cover of the book, it seemed to be an unusual read, and I wanted to give it a chance. And I'm glad it turned out really well, because I cannot get over this read! To be honest, halfway through reading this I started questioning my sanity because of how much I was starting to like it. This was just so weird, and funny, and unhinged 😂 I loved every single bit of it!
Until the World Ends by Jolene Gettler is a quirky romcom set in Hell's Gate where surviving an apocalyptic event is a daily occurrence and dating can be deadly.
Grace is the city's PR specialist and it's her job to make Hell's Gate appealing fo tourists and potential residents. Not only does she have to sell a city where every day could be your last, she's also trying to navigate dating in a paranormal society where you never know if your date will be human or not. As if dating in your 30s wasn't already hard enough. Grace is someone you could easily be best friends with. She is strong, successful, smart and determined. Her frustrations with her love life, friends and work, as well as her inner monologues, make it easy to relate to her.
Archer is Grace's handsome new boss who has pitched a new campaign idea to the city about enticing people to Hell's Gate. He immediately gets Grace offside by trying to take her account. Having recently returned to the city Archer seems to know exactly how to provoke Grace both in and outside of the office.
The realistic approach to romance was nice to see. I liked that it was not love at first sight for any of the characters. Grace and Archer's developing relationship is more comparable to a real life romance, rather than what you usually read about in a romance. I loved the dive into how messy and complicated dating apps, first dates and getting to know someone can be and how through it all the characters stayed true to themselves.
One of my favourite things was how the residents of Hell's Gate went about their every day lives despite whatever unexpected threat occurred. That alarm is sounding? Put on your gas mask and continue on your way. Giant tentacles break through the ground? Work together with items from your survival bag and send it back underground then move on.
For a book with warlocks, vampires, eye popping gas and killer clowns, Until the World Ends was not what I was expecting. While there is some death and light horror moments, it is a unique, unpredictable read that had me laughing out loud.
While others would run from it, Hell's Gate sounds like a place I could happily reside but as that's not possible, here's hoping we get more of this unusual city and it's residents in the future.
I don't usually read romcoms, but so far I've loved every book I've read by Gettler, so when I was approached about beta reading, I instantly said yes!
Grace works in PR and her job is to make Hell's Gate look less, well, 'hellish' to anyone who wishes to visit or potentially live there. As I was reading, I was thinking to myself: I really wouldn't want her job. Let me tell you, Hell's Gate really is a gateway to hell. Killer clowns, vampires, and other monsters roam the streets and even tentacles shoot up from the ground. Yeah... I definitely wouldn't want that job.
While she's having to deal with all things related to work, Grace's love life is pretty much non-existent. And when she has a bit of a love life, well... things go wrong. So very, very wrong. I don't want to spoil anything, but dang girl, I feel for you. Dating in your thirties is hard enough as it is, let alone in a place like Hell's Gate.
To make things worse, Grace gets a new boss, whom I like to call 'boss man' (he is my new book boyfriend and he is 100% swoon-worthy). He's my favourite character (after Grace), and I -love- the tension between them and the sassy remarks she throws his way. Just to make it clear, it's none of the cliché Hollywood style of banter/sass you might expect, which I'm really thankful for, because I personally can't stand that in books. It's not for me. So kudos to the author for writing something different and making it fun!
I love the addition of the text messages in the book - it makes the exchanges between Grace and the others really fun to follow.
Now, the romance in this book is STEAMY, and I would say there's a spicy kick to it. Not ultra spicy, but there definitely is some spicy moments in it. I'm not a huge fan of spice in books personally, but this was written in such a way that I enjoyed reading it, and it didn't make me feel icky in terms of wording used, etc.
I absolutely ADORED this book and I can't wait to get the hardcover version to have on my shelf! Thank you for trusting me with your manuscript, Jolene!
I really had no idea what I was getting into with this book. Sure I read the description after finding this author on social media and requesting an ARC. But no amount of graphics with the tropes could really prepare you for this at times heart breaking, always funny story. Think Buffy the Vampire Slayer meets Killer Clowns from Outer Space meets Charmed but like, on crack?
I laughed way more during this book than I expected too. It was funny, entertaining, easy to read and follow, the side characters I felt added to the charm and didn’t seem half-baked. Overall it was a fun, kitschy spooky season read. 🌶️/🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️ for spice level but that was kind of a nice break for me. I mean don’t get me wrong, there is a ton of sex talk. Just not on page spiciness
It gave: enemies to lovers, grumpy boss, a slow burn, romantic comedy, death and weird clowns.
Spoilers: Grace works in Hell’s Gate, a (not really) nice place to live. Daily they are plagued with skin melting fog, tentacle monsters breaking up streets and sidewalks, vampires that the government may or may be lying about and let’s not forget the KILLER LAUGHING CLOWNS. Hello? [I refuse to not acknowledge them as often as possible because UNNECESSARILY SCARY for people with a clown phobia]. Like WHO would want to live there??? Well that happens to be Grace’s job, convincing people to move to Hell’s Gate. Armed with a gossipy, incompetent but sometimes insightful assistant Grace faces another big challenge with her boss, sexy, grumpy Archer. He basically wants to dismantle the entire ‘Hell’s Gate is a great place to live’ promotion Grace has crafted for the last year. Grace is also 30 and incredibly single but dating in Hell’s Gate is well….hell. But then she has this insane and annoying attraction to her boss, but also a mystery man on the dating apps she’s also attracted too and then there might be the case of a stalker she’s dealing with and it’s all just A LOT.

I'm a big fan of The Great Vampiric Deception so when I found out Jolene was putting out a romcom with monsters I couldn't wait to read it. I wasn't disappointed.
The Goods - The characters were funny, interesting, and as well developed as they needed to be. They were more than just your typical tropes, because this story is more than your usual romcom. Everyone had clear motivations for what they were doing and there were some nice surprises along the way.
The horror elements had some nice nods to well beloved horror franchises. The town the characters live in have a literal portal to Hell it seems. The hilarious part is they all seem well equipped to deal with the dangers on a day to day level. That's not to say anyone is safe. Jolene established early on that no one was safe. That makes for good dramatic tension, even though you find yourself reasonably sure the MCs have decent plot armor. But you quickly learn all is not as it appears.
The romantic plot is standard and should please any fan of romance. There's a little bit of spice, but it's not super explicit. Maybe 1.5-2 chili peppers out of five. At one point, Grace has a couple of guys on the string and that makes for great tension. Who will she choose? And who's the mystery man?
This book also plays a little with the media format. She has several places in the book where there are texting conversations and she uses a text bubble format. I love when authors include little touches like that.
The Bads - I have a minor quibble with how things wind up, but that's truly a nitpick. One of the things I loved about TGVD was the ending. This one wasn't as surprising. That's okay, it was still satisfactory.
The Verdict - I really enjoyed this book. If you're a fan of Molly Harper, you'll love her books. Definitely a five star book for me.
This is a fun and funny book to read. I chuckled at some of the comical moments.
It's saturated with dialogue, but the dialogue drives the plot. It's almost like this book could easily be adapted into a rom-com film script.
There are moments, however, where the story is tricky to follow only because of the reliance on the dialogue. I found myself flipping back the (eBook) pages to make sure I understood what was going on and which character was saying what. And I felt, at times, that I want a bit more from the narrator's omniscient perspective.
There are minor details that seem out of sync with the broader story. This book isn't "perfect". But overall, the writing and tone is consistent, and it has a good pace.
I like how the author includes text message conversations between the characters. I didn't feel like I was reading a "chat log". The text messages enhance the story and the narrative.
There are some typos. But I don't want that to be the center of this review. I'm sure any mistakes will be corrected in updates and future editions.
There is a good mix of sexy and scary (without overdoing either). I appreciate how the author weaves it all together.
I also like the book's art. The cover is great as well as the art demarcating the chapters.
The genre and themes in Gettler's book aren't usually what I look for in a fiction. Regardless, reading this book makes me want to read some of the author's other writing. So if success is measured in wanting more, than Gettler's book is a success.
(Possible light spoilers ahead) Okay, there was a lot in this book I liked and a lot that I didn’t. Starting with what I liked? The COMEDY. I tore through this book in just a few hours, it was a nice breather between some heavy books I’d been reading. I liked Grace a lot- I actually really sympathize with her “worked on my career in my twenties, now I’m 30 what do I do?” (Especially because I just turned 30 this week), and I loved her confidence and assuredness with all the monster dealings! I also thought the creatures were done so well- some laughable, some creepy, others just made you say “wtf?” (Larry might have given me the biggest laugh after I realized what was happening). Honestly, it’s a fun and cute little romance with a trope that can be hit or miss- the “secretly texting you because we think we hate each other but we actually don’t” was done well in this story! I was pretty sure it was the main guy until that switcheroo at the end! The things I didn’t like? Not much. Mostly it was Scarlett. I found her antics in the first quarter/third or so outrageously annoying but she became much more tolerable. Overall, this was a really fun monster 🧟♀️🧛🏼♀️🧙🏻♂️ comedy romance perfect for spooktober- I’d recommend someone pick it up if that’s the vibe they’re looking for, but it also may not be everyone’s cup of tea… ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5!!!!
Jolene Gettler’s Until the World Ends is one of those books that grabs you right from the start and doesn’t let go. It’s the perfect mix of romance, suspense, and survival, all set in a post-apocalyptic world that feels way too real. The best part? The classic will-they-won't-they dynamic that keeps you guessing the whole way through.
The chemistry between the main characters is on fire. Every time you think they’re about to give in to their feelings, something comes along to shake things up. That back-and-forth really amps up the emotional depth and makes their journey just as gripping as the crumbling world around them.
Gettler’s writing is sharp, her world-building is super immersive, and the characters feel real and relatable. Until the World Ends isn’t just another romance—it’s about hope, resilience, and finding love in the worst of times. Whether you’re into dystopian stories or just love a good romance, you’ll have a hard time putting this one down. If you want a book with heart-pounding action and a love story that pulls at your heartstrings, this is it.
Tentacle Monster, Vampires, Warlocks, OH MY! ~~~~~ Until The World Ends is a dark humored horror rom-com with little world building, but lots of snappy dialogue. The banter in this book is entertaining to read, and boy is it full of it. This book is a perfect quick, silly palate cleanser. If you're looking for in depth world building you wont find it with Hell's Gate, the citizens just accept it so we do to. I'd never want to live there, but I did love reading about the people who do.
We have Grace, our main female, who is dealing with a new boss, surviving Tuesday night curfew, and online dating. Tuesday night curfew seems to be the easiest for her to deal with, but she persists on. Archer, the new (hot as hell) boss, puts a damper on Grace's PR job and starts off with her on the wrong foot but redeems himself in the end.
More realistic than most romance novels, apocalyptic town aside. The burn was akin to real life, not insta love. The spice was minimal with 2 scenes, both of which happen via phone versus in person. I do wish the book was a bit longer so that we had more time with Grace and Archer. Would I read it again? I would probably pick it up as my palate cleanser between my more darker romances. ~~~~~~~~ Grab your survival bags, you wont survive in Hell's Gate without them.
Thank you to the author for providing me with an ARC in exchange for my honest review.
I was an Advance Reader for this book and I have never been so glad that I found it. It was the cutest little horror rom/com you ever did see... maybe the only?! Either way from beginning to the end I laughed and had several wtf moments and loved it. The characters are very relatable especially in the world of online dating. You can draw a lot of conclusions about what is out there vs what you get and what you see is NOT always who shows up. Yikes! There was some spice, maybe a 2 or a 3. Honestly that's subjective. The premise is Hell's Gate being a nice/not nice place to live and the FMC job is to make it seem like paradise and convince people to move there. Because who wouldn't want to adhere to a 6pm curfew on Tuesday nights? The events that the FMC has to deal with could absolutely be extrapolated into normal office life and dealing with all sorts of personalities. Then having some dillweed boss come in and try to steal your glory and thunder, absolutely relatable. This is a silly satire with some definite moments of tension and a delicious read I devoured.
Ok, so its a super cute story. It is written in 3rd person and only in 1 POV, so if those are deal breakers for you, give it a shot anyway. I know that I did and am very glad that I did.
Poor Grace is having a difficult time putting herself out there, what with being a single 30 year old woman who lives near what is believed to be the gate to Hell. Enter Archer, her new boss, and sparks fly. But unfortunately for the wrong reason, at least in the beginning.
As they grow closer working on their new campaign, we get to see small snippets of things that can and do go wrong living by Hells Gate. I was thoroughly entertained by each encounter our characters had with each entity that they had to fight and I just wish there were a few more sprinkled in.
With a little twist to our duo's relationship towards the end, Archer is in the dog house and other than a few texts and 1 sit down discussion, we didn't get to see too much of his groveling. I really wanted to see him grovel. LOL Thanks for a cute endish of the world story!
Gleeful Goblin Review: As someone who loves absurdity in media such as the podcasts Welcome to Nightvale, Mission To Zyxx, Stellar Firma, and so many more this book absolutely reminds me in the best ways of those stories. The town He!!'s Gate is the epicenter of a staggering amount of world ending catastrophes but the citizenry is mostly used to it and tries to get on with the business of living; at least until the next body melting fog hits. It reminds me of Sunnyvale from Buffy (and there's even a sneaky little reference!) except everyone is Very Aware of the fact they live on a He!!mouth. They even feel bad for the folks in surrounding towns that aren't used to navigating 3 apocalypse events per week.
This book hits a ton of my favorite romcom tropes but it is so fresh with the horror/absurdity mix in play. Like, you're just getting steamy over a video call with a guy you like and then boom, vampire attack made possible by clerical technicality on his lease literally kílls the mood...and him. This is an apocalyptic good time read I highly recommend. 5/5 Stars
Okay, this was freakin’ hilarious! Imagine a mash up of The Office, Buffy The Vampire Slayer, and The Ugly Truth (2009). It’s just straight-up fun with a side of crazy, and I loved it.
The story follows two people who live in a town that’s basically a hellmouth. We’re talking vampires, warlocks, tentacle monsters, and killer clowns—but just on Tuesdays. Grace, the city’s PR darling, meets her match in the hot new boss, Archer. When they’re forced to team up on a campaign to attract tourists and new residents, sparks fly, and the hate is instant. But that’s fine, because Grace is single and happy to mingle…if only her dates would stop dying. Oh, and if her assistant would just shut up and do her job.
What follows is a wild adventure that kept me laughing and wishing I could handle chaos half as well as these townsfolk.
Congrats to @jgettlernovels on such a great story!
Jolene creates a world in which we never hope to live in but makes it fun and inviting. The banter, tension and all around world ending drama are hilarious.
Yes I said world ending drama is hilarious. 😂
I loved the FMC's strength and resilience through impossible daily challenges living in Hell's Gate. I loved the MMC for not being afraid of a strong woman who knows her strengths. Who accepts her for who she is and wants to help her prosper in it all. Even the side characters create a fun side story with laugh out loud interactions.
Hell's Gate is not a town you want to live in, or is it? Do you want to fight monsters on a daily basis? Do you want to live with the terror of having bad things happen daily? And on top of it all, trying to date in your thirties?
Until the World Ends is filled with banter, chills and a HEA like every romcom deserves! A quick and interesting read! You won't be disappointed in Jolene's writing or her out of this world story!
I loved this book! It was funny and quirky and just what I needed after some of the darker books I’ve read lately. And even though it has vampires, and warlocks and killer clowns (yes, you read that right, killer clowns lol!), the author had me laughing out loud at how nonchalant everyone was towards what was going on. I thought Grace was an incredible FMC. Any ordinary person would have shut down after going through what she did; but she was so strong and resilient, and determined. And I thought Archer, while he made some mistakes, was a very genuine and likable MMC. He truly cared about Grace and was willing to go to great lengths for her, while also giving her space when she needed it. He didn’t try to steamroll over her and he listened to her, recognizing her strength. Their banter and flirting was excellent. There were also some really good secondary characters in this book that definitely added a lot to the story. I’m really glad that I gave this one a chance!!
This book was a pleasant surprise! I was expecting more heaviness with monsters and lore (which I have to add I normally read) but instead was humored with a romcom that had the occasional monster (or creature or supernatural being) that stirred things up.
With the romcom elements, we bypassed some of the expectations of “cliched” moments of romance and dive into the realistic (and messy) of well everything when it comes to dating from dating apps to first dates to awkward photos (or maybe not) to preferences and expectations and what happens next. I loved that while it was utter chaos at times, Grace stayed true to herself.
Did the near ending frustrate me? At first. It toyed with my romance book expectations. But like everything with this story, it stayed real and authentic, and I was smiling hardcore because it ended like it was meant to.
I got the message of staying true to yourself and making the moments count because really, who knows when the world could end.
Thank you so much to the author for the ARC in exchange for an honest review!
The premise of this book immediately hooked me and the books execution did not disappoint. There were so many funny scenarios and encounters with demons, warlocks, alien creatures, cult leaders and vampires. I could not put this book down.
There were some editing errors, but I fully acknowledge that I didn't read the final copy. And I also think the ending was a bit rushed. I enjoyed that we skipped around in time a little, but I wanted more groveling.
The only thing other than those two things that I didn't like about the book was Scarlett. I think readers were supposed to come around to her by the end of the book, but I just wasn't buying how obtuse her character was.
Other than that, I thought Grace was a great character, I was here for Archer, even if he made me want to bang my head against a wall sometimes. The rivals to lovers type dynamic was fun to read.
