Carol Oates came into the world on Christmas morning, in an elevator. Raised just across the street from the childhood home of Bram Stoker, author of Dracula, it was only a matter of time before Carol’s love of all things supernatural would emerge.
She began experimenting with fiction at school and keeps the notebook containing her first unpublished novel in her desk drawer. Over three decades later, all her stories still begin life scrawled on paper.
When not writing, Carol can be found exploring history, old buildings, castles, and tombs.

The Link Between Science and Horror

Carol Oates, you have officially horrified me with this taut, suspenseful novella.

Lincoln (Link) Downing is a young man who becomes intimate for the first time with his girlfriend Nancy, after senior prom, only to crash his car and suffer a near-fatal head injury. Luckily neurosurgeon Matthew saves Lincoln with his revolutionary brain treatment.

Dr. Matthew still pines for Lincoln's mother Kathleen, who married another man when Matthew left town to study medicine. Here, Matthew observes Kathleen:

She'd twisted her rich, caramel hair into a knot at the back of her head, highlighting the gentle sweeping curve of her long throat. She wore a black, form-fitting shift dress that stopped just below her knees, displaying her shapely calves and slim ankles. Matthew couldn't deny she'd aged well, showing only a few fine lines around her eyes--eyes that seemed sad and tired now.

I love Carol's descriptions.

While grateful to Matthew for saving his life, Lincoln doesn't feel quite himself. Are the brain treatments working like they should? He starts to have vicious nightmares of a monster killing its prey aka Lincoln's friends.

Are those nightmares merely dreams? Or REALITY? Mwa ha ha!

Check out this chilling tale!

Great, great story. A classic. From the very first words, Unmade has an eerie tone that gets steadily darker as you- wait, no, I don't want to give away any spoilers. Just know that this is a beautifully-written story that had me riveted throughout, wanting to know where it was going, and where it went was highly satisfying. For a short novella, it brought up a lot of interesting themes that have kept me thinking. I'd classify it as dark NA with explicit scenes that are wonderfully and tastefully handled. I feel so fortunate to have been a pre-reader on this and can't wait until it's released so more people can get their hands on it.

I was extremely surprised by this book. Not that I expect anything less from this author - in my opinion, she is absolutely amazing - but with it being a novella, I wasn't expecting SO MUCH depth in the book. I was on the edge of my seat throughout the whole thing. Constantly wondering what was going on. Who was who, etc., etc. I was able to figure some things out, but other things not. I was very surprised, in a good way, of the ending. In my opinion, it was really the only acceptable ending, so I was very pleased.

This is the first time I've read anything by this author but it will certainly not be my last. I was very impressed with all that was included in such a short novella (under 60 pages) without feeling rushed or unresolved in any way at all. Unmade is just a sheerly brilliant and clever horror/murder mystery that is beautifully written. I notice it is labeled YA but I would say this is Mature YA as it does contain some violence and sexual content.

Highly recommended!

This one is a killer-thriller.

This New Adult horror novella UNMADE by Carol Oates is short and unsweet. A savory mix between Ray Bradbury and Stephen King.

Here's what happens:

On prom night Lincoln Dowling attempts to save a wounded dog--and is struck by a car. His prognosis is bad--traumatic brain injury with days to live--and his mother seeks the help of renown neuroscientist, Dr. Matthew Baker, to save her only child.

Mrs. Dowling and Dr. Baker have a past--as in they were lovers years back in high school--and Dr. Baker agrees to help, knowing that he saves the child of his rival.

Lincoln's recovery is astounding. Within a year of the accident he's fit and healthy, but his personality is changed. He's no longer the fun-loving, gentle young man who'd save a wounded dog. Now, he's agitated and aggressive at times, plagued by nightmares of a clawed creature tearing his friends to pieces. Soon these nightmares become reality. Kids are dying. The children of any person who ever wronged Dr. Baker way back in high school, in fact.

As Lincoln struggles to find the answers to the murders locked within his dreams, he's sure the 'cure' he'd been given wasn't worth the price he's paying.

The resolution leaves the reader satisfied with a delicious Bradbury-esque twist.
