When Anna’s fortune is lost, she is forced to become a maid for music publisher De Malapert. Intrigued by her employer, she spends her free time conjuring up ways to impress him.
However, De Malapert remains unaware of her attentions. Working in the shop by day and transcribing opera scores by night, he is distracted only by the occasional visit from his flamboyant friend Everard Borgholt.

As Anna’s obsession deepens, however, she begins to eavesdrop on these late-night soirees. Unwittingly, she contributes to the downfall of both the “only man she could imagine giving herself to” and herself.

About the author

Anja Sicking studeerde klarinet aan het Koninklijk Conservatorium. Zij werkte daarna een tijdlang als musicus en speelde in symfonieorkesten, muziektheaterproducties en kamermuziekensembles. Op den duur ging zij zich ook toeleggen op het schrijven van verhalen. Een bekroning in het kader van de S.N.S.-literatuurprijs was daarbij een aanmoediging. Na verloop van tijd bleek dat het musiceren en het schrijven moeilijk met elkaar te combineren waren en koos zij ten slotte voor de literatuur.

Haar debuut, Het Keuriskwartet, werd bekroond met de Marten Toonder/Geertjan Lubberhuizenprijs. Het werd ook genomineerd voor de Debutantenprijs en de AKO Literatuurprijs. Haar tweede roman, De stomme zonde, is vertaald in het Duits, Engels en Turks. De roman werd genomineerd voor de eerste DIF/BNG Aanmoedigingsprijs en de International IMPAC Dublin Literary Award. Hierna volgden uitnodigingen voor internationale literaire festivals.

Anja Sicking is als docent verbonden aan de Schrijversvakschool Amsterdam en was gastdocent op de Amsterdamse Hogeschool voor de Kunsten.

The Silent Sin is the story of one woman's (Anna) experience in the early 18th century in Amsterdam--experience that includes downward movement in social class, having to leave all that was familiar to her, society's expectations and constrictions on women, and her innocence sheltering her from the homosexuality of her employer. It is a slow-moving story, with much inner dialog by Anna, with some disturbing justification by Anna as to why the men had to be tortured and be put to death for the betterment of society overall.

Goed geschreven, en interessant om je eens echt te verplaatsen in die tijd.
Maar het kon me niet echt raken, de personage voelden toch te plat voor me.

anja sicking was also on the PEN panel that i moderated. this book explores the topic of homosexuality in eighteenth-century amsterdam through the eyes of an innocent young woman who becomes a maid in the house of a composer and musician. although the story is simple, the historical details of amsterdam are particularly intriguing.
