A multilayered, dreamlike tale full of wondrous exotic worlds and epic battles that take your breath away!

From across the distant stars and galaxies is a rarity known as Terrana, who wields incredible powers to transverse between other worlds {reminiscent of ‘The Doctor’}. Sector One is a part of space teeming with mind-blowing technology and powerful creatures, and it is here where Terrana finds it being threatened by a almost forgotten ancient alien race. Thrown into the midst of an epic manga-esque battle of extraordinary magnitude, Terrana is faced with not only the choice between good and evil but an outcome that alters and defines the future for all within the universe.

Richly detailed and containing much substance, the profoundly weighty narrative left me in awe {as a lover of high/epic fantasy and space Operas}. The fiery, gutsy main protagonist will appeal to teen readers of YA fiction, as she is a heroine of spirit whom you cannot help but love. The in-depth, extensive world building is so vast and full of delicious detail that it makes the story credible, believable and utterly compelling to read. I was fascinated by the concept of how society was split into ten sectors each identifiable by their singular culture and history, whose purpose is to maintain peace throughout Dartkala (which is the void that lies between each sector). By encouraging harmony between all the different alien races, the terrible threat that Terrana uncovers in sector one is made even more intense.

The scope of this impressively ambitious literary masterpiece is so remarkable; that I cannot commend Sulin Young enough for her accomplished writing ability and imaginative vision. The metaphysical details and mind-bending concepts that broaden the boundaries of sci-fi, adds to the overall supernatural ambience and otherworldly technological advances. Here is a work of such magnitude that in my mind it could be up there alongside Star Wars or equally as impacting as Northern Lights with how each layer is interconnected. Cleverly complex characters such as Terrana embody so many intriguing qualities & special abilities, such as her shadow {Gollum/ Smegól nemesis} the inner demon Anarret. Deeply philosophical, absorbing and ‘deep’ I plunged headlong into a portal of phenomenal outlandishness and refreshing originality.

Sulin Young writes with impassioned intensity that’s addictive and magnetic, drawing you into the most electrifying story of everlasting credence. I was left revelling in its exotic wonders and overwhelming content, which certainly cannot be found in your average fantasy novel! Here is an author who stretches beyond to merge together a variety of genres for an entirely unique outcome, like nothing you will have encountered before. The intergalactic, splendid setting and thrilling action/ adventure transport you into the heart of one of the GREATEST sci-fi fantasy fusions I could ever of had the privilege to have read. I fervently ask you to seriously consider reading/ buying/ delving into this AMAZING debut novel…

Filled with abundant imagination and complex characters, Sulin Young weaves an incredible story about a young girl struggling with who she is and what her place is in the world.

Starting in Fiji, Young clearly connects with her roots, painting a clear, distinct, and beautiful picture of the tropical island and the protagonist, Terrana. From there, Young reveals her limitless imagination by taking us through Space, revealing future technologies, and describing complex alien beings with their remarkable abilities. Young introduces character after character, somehow creating a distinction between each one as well as a legitimate emotional connection. Each plot point is unique and unexpected with twists and turns that will make you catch your breath, cry, and sigh in relief. Young does an amazing job of bringing everything to a complete circle. At the end of the book, you will be relieved for the characters and the resolution of the plot but deeply saddened that the story has already come to an close.

Please note that the following paragraph contains "SPOILERS":
I was constantly impressed with the imagination and complexity of Ice Phoenix. Young created several different universes each with its own race with their own special skills and technologies. This doesn't include the several different animal species, the spaceships, a version of "magic", and various technologies (medical and otherwise). To look at how much Terrana, the protaganist, progressed through the story is amazing. When Baneyon dies on Si Ren Da, I was devastated as one of my favorite character fell to his death but I also understood that that moment was a distinct and necessary turning point for Terrana. Without the realization of how much her guardian meant to her, she would not have been able to understand and conquer the many challenges to come. This is just one of the many examples of Young's ability to combine a twist in the plot with a character's struggle. Young understands the need for sacrifice and she has the uncanny ability to connect the reader emotionally with every character, every planet, and every plot twist.

I do have one qualm:
1. The ending felt too quick. While practically all of my questions were answered, the bow around the box was tied too fast and too neatly. The Epilogue opened the ending up to more possibilities but the last chapter brought everything to a close a little too fast for me.

The plot is unique and unexpected. The characters intense and complex. The settings beautiful and rich. I cannot list one good reason why you should not spend the mere $5.99 as this book is worth much, much more. I highly recommend that you purchase this book and start reading immediately - you will not regret it.

On a slightly unrelated side note, I would like to make a personal appeal to the author - Sulin Young, please write another book! And soon!

To understand how much I love this book and how deeply I would recommend it, I think it is worth understanding where I am coming from. I am that kind of person who would read only big novel from very respected and known authors. I use to believe that anything under that standard would be just crap and not worth my time because let’s face it, if the story would be THAT good, it would have been publish. God was I wrong!!

How I came to read Ice Phoenix is a long story that I will spear you, but the important thing here is that from the very first chapter of this book I knew I was not dealing with an amateur writer, that I was jumping into a fantastic and entirely out of ordinary story. This book completely captivated me. I couldn’t believe how much I was drowning into this world, into Sulin Yong’s fantastic imagination. The style of writing is flawless, the development of characters is deep and complex, the story is breath taking (action, suspense, full of twists, emotional, completely different background story then what I ever read before, etc.) and I could go on for a while but you would need to read it to understand what I am talking about.

So please give it a try and I promise you won’t regret it!! Now I know that even unknown author can blow your mind with their talent. Thank you Sulin Young for proving me wrong and opening my eyes! You did a fantastic job with your book and I can’t wait to see where you will take us next.
Let’s help this very talented author to make it. Buy her book, post a review, share with your friends, it is seriously worth it!!!

Sulin Young's Ice Phoenix is a rare kind of novel that melds elements of science fantasy and manga to create a dreamlike experience full of wonders, exotic worlds, and epic battles. Much of Ice Phoenix's charm is pinned on the book hitting different fan sectors. Young-Adult readers would find its adventurous story exciting. Anime fans have the novel's fast-paced Shōnen-style action, mobile suits, and an energy or "qi" system that reminds me of the chakra in Naruto or the power in Dragon Ball Z. Comedy fans have Baneyon (a significant comic-relief character). Lastly, the epic fantasy fans would relish its vast and outlandish milieus, and its undying struggle against evil.

The United of the Worlds of In-Between is a huge society organized in ten Sectors, each with their natural governance and culture. Their purpose: "To maintain peace throughout Dartkala (space of darkness that exist between sectors) and encourage understanding between the different races". It seems that Young is more interested in expanding the scope of the universe with metaphysical details and mind-bending concepts than developing the settings' background and characters. Much of it feels exotic –The names, the supernatural nature, and the technology.

Terrana, a young girl from Sector Thirteen (Earth), somehow ends up in Sector One, a strange world where powerful beings known as Lacers and Weavers, exist. They can manipulate "Qi", a sophisticated form of energy that enables them to cast spells. The extrapolation of "Qi" is amusing, and Young's technical details in describing it are impressive, especially the difference between Lacers and Weavers, and the various ranks of power.

Terrana's character is more complex than most heroines in popular Young-Adult stories. Like them she has special abilities that make her a key player in the great war, but more importantly, her challenge of being considered an alien and her internal conflicts with her inner demon "Anarret", are characteristics that make her deep and sympathetic. Because of her subconscious alter-ego and violence, many misunderstand her, including herself. Young doesn't reveal all her mysteries at once. Her mentor figure Baneyon, the ice phoenixes, and her pet-dolphin Puddy are the only ones whom she seems to connect with. There are some entertaining characters with integral missions and I get excited when I see them kick demons' asses, but many of them lack the depth that Terrana has.

In the first half of the novel, Young takes time to develop the worlds that Terrana explores; we learn about culture, demons, and Qi from lectures in Minda Yerra, a school in Pampa Gumpina. Even though the conflict against an alien race doesn't get momentum until the middle, the lighthearted tone and build-up are never boring. There's a mind-blowing surprise in every chapter. Young has the skill and energy to carry her readers to the novel's most intense moments, where they can spend a pleasurable time reveling in its exotic wonders. Young highlights Terrana's fascination of the world in these passages:

- Terrana studied the people with something akin to awe; never in her life could she have imagined such a melting pot of races.
- A new and exciting world opened up to her. Never before had she seen so many races converge.

The diversification of the society reflects the novel's melting pot-qualities: its heterogeneous mixture of fantasy and science fiction elements. There are demons, mobile-suit soldiers, dogs that could see through illusions, Margakan (feline race), snaleks (snail-like creatures), a Dream Walker, and other exotic species. It's a fun and weird mix that you wouldn't find in an average fantasy novel. Young is not afraid to break down boundaries between genres. Because of that, Ice Phoenix is worth discovering.

Venture deep into a vast universe, a world unlike those you've seen before. A well written original story full of unique characters, everyone with his own personality and traits and endless possibilities. The protagonist is not a typical Mary-Sue hero, but a soul that struggle between light and dark, a gift and a curse. An amazing background history that works as a fundamental structure, a wand to cast the magic of the story, with some twists that work like a charm to create a fragile illusion. Both dark and brilliant, a book that you just can't stop reading once you start traveling among it's pages. A dark history, technological advanced worlds, strong magic, assassinations, demons, epic battles, mind games and creatures of the void, compose a scenery that makes you want to learn more and more about it.

I really loved it and I can definitely say that it has make my own universe much richer.

I would suggest it to anyone who likes fantasy literature, and maybe manga and sci-fi fans would find it even more appealing.

Amazing read. It dragged me in from the very beginning and it was difficult to put this book down. A beautifully crafted first chapter that has you wondering about Terrana, the main character and where she's from. Her abrupt departure in Chapter One had me turning the page hurriedly to find out more. Turns out she's from Fiji, her best friend is a dolphin and you suspect right away, there's something more to the dolphin than meets the eye. I enjoyed the way the author depicted the relationship between Terrana and her brother - there were some very touching moments that er hm, did not make me cry.

The pacing was great in this book, the world building exquisite and wondrous, and I felt tense excitement, seeing the ships and new worlds through Terrana's eyes. I have to say, the author had a fantastic imagination, creating fascinating alien beings, each with unique attributes particular to their race. There were a lot of funny moments, nerve biting suspense, and awesome fight scenes that had me cheering. There is also a wonderful cast of characters and I'm pretty sure that anyone who has read the book will have their favourites. I enjoyed the fight scenes between Terrana and her alien nemesis, the problem solving skills of the Grandmaster as he sought to uncover the reason for the murders, and the jolly camaraderie between the Imeldors as they battled to survive on an unforgiving planet against a forgotten alien race.

As for the plot - all I can say is, brilliant. This may be for young adults but the author has woven a brilliant intricate story, skillfully blending in the history of the United Worlds of the In-Between (that's the alien version of the United Nations except this consists of hundreds of planets spanning several galaxies) into current time, and just when you think you have it solved, the story takes a sharp twist that leaves you open mouthed - in a good way. There are some things I never saw coming but nothing is ever left unexplained or hanging. Nothing is rushed - the 460 odd pages is testament to that but the writing is clear and beautifully paced. There wasn't a boring moment in the book! The ending was very satisfying and the author even left a little bonus dialogue at the end, after the acknowledgements. I really, really, really hope the author puts out a sequel, like tomorrow.

What do you get from a writer who has grown up in a world far away from the plethora of author hotspots churning out an infinite number of books in the name of a quick buck? Why - sci-fi/fantasy with a new twist and overflowing originality to boot! Sulin Young's background and life in Fiji has to be the reason why she could have come up with something as provocative, fascinating, thrilling and original like the Ice Phoenix. Her imagination and lack of hesitation to blend two genres in the Ice Phoenix, challenges all rules and previous conceptions of what science fiction should be.

First of all, Ice Phoenix is dark. Very dark. But darkness in most books leaves you troubled, melancholy even, but this one does the opposite. It leaves you thirsting to know more, you are certain that there is light at the end of the tunnel, in fact you demand it! Despite the beautiful visuals, the bubbly camaraderie of friendship, the naive and innocent protagonist and her floundering and humorous moments, the story is deep, twisted, suspenseful. Not at any one point was I able to predict the outcome, and there were shocking moments that had me wallowing in disbelief. The author kept the story and characters very real and that is saying something, for how easy is it to keep aliens, feiyed creatures and qi (I refuse to call it magic - it's not!) credible? I was able to get into the heads of all the characters, a style unique to this author and empathized with them on a high level.

Even though Terrana is the protagonist of this story, it doesn't seem like it - in a good way of course. There is a very strong cast of supporting characters, the mystery of both Terrana's background and the Imeldor assassinations is intriguing and suspenseful. The battle scenes were written with aplomb and not a dull narration of who is killing who. Each character got centre time on stage without deviating from the real story, in fact, their scenes only strengthened it further.

My main frustration with this book is that it ended! Curses left my mouth as I thumbed through to find more pages. I tried looking for the next book and was disappointed that this is the only one the author has written - a travesty!

Wonderful surprise

This book was a huge surprise for me. Luckily a really good one. I expected to read hopefully a nice book with dynamic plot, but Ice Phoenix is so much more than that.
First, the plot itself.
It’s original, intriguing, extremely dynamic, and it has twists that I haven’t anticipated. That says a lot about the book, because at this point of my life filled with thousands of books, movies, and TV series I usually can guess pretty much all of the plot turns and twists. In Ice Phoenix every twist and turn, and every detail makes sense, and yet I still failed to anticipate the main revelation, alone side with several of other interesting twists. Kudos to the author for that.
Second, imagery.
Ice phoenix is extremely visual. Characters, the surroundings, battles – all of that I could literally see in my head. Simply amazing. I don’t know if the author thought about movie franchise or not, but I think we can have a new Harry Potter on our hands 
And finally, characters.
Terrana is very complex, very alive. She is not portrayed as a perfect super hero, she is a person (and a little bit more ;)) You sympathize with her, you love her, you hate her, you are frustrated with her, you really feel for her. “Supporting” characters are amazing as well. I put “supporting” in quotation marks, because in this book they take a strong lead, and even drive the story sometimes. To be honest I have two favorite characters, and none of them is Terrana (even though she is amazing). Queen and Baneyon… I’d marry both of them 
To make a balanced review I should mention some negatives. That is quite challenging to be honest, since the Ice Phoenix goes right at the top of my favorite books for young adults. The only thing that bugged me a bit was references to Earth pop culture that “aliens” made. It was no more than two of them, so it didn’t affect my feeling towards the book.

Overall, Ice Phoenix is an original dynamic book with a plethora of amazing characters. Must read.

A definite bestseller in the making, Sulin Young has without any doubt delivered perhaps one of the greatest sci-fi fantasy ever. The intergalactic setting, colorful characters, adventure, suspense, action and freshness of this story has an element of uniqueness and originality which I found most appealing.

Terrana, the "Fijian girl" from Fiji was my best character and the time she spends in Fiji with her family and her best friend Puddy, the dolphin is most memorable. The ocean provides an eco-system for her to escape into the underwater world with Puddy is one of the highlights in the beginning. Her sudden removal and journey into Pa Gumpina is the start of the events to unfold which is beyond her imagination and difficult for her to accept initially.

The shrewdness of the story telling is what made me laugh out without warning or cringe with frustration and disbelief.

Her friends Lorn, Milkin, Prince with her pet Kazu together with her guardian Baneyon and with the assistance of the Imeldors enable Terrana to cope with a life of sadness, curiosity, hope and delight after the unexpected demise of her family in Fiji.

The biggest shocker in this plot is the events which take place in Si Ren Da that leaves one in awe of the twist and turns which are yet to come. This story is so unpredictable that at times, I felt the frustration of the characters which kept me glued until the end.

Towards the end, the attack of the wrails, battle with the demons, and the “hunger” are the signs of a showdown between the Custodians of the universe and Evil forces.

All in all, this books is going to take you on an magical and erratic roller-coaster ride which will leave you hungry for more. Genuine masterpiece, brilliant and the work of a genius. Hoping and praying for a sequel asap.

A refreshing, humorous and often dark story that fools you completely into believing that it is predictable. However, predictable it is not, simple it is not, and underwhelming most certainly not! It is an unusual blend of fantasy,sci-fi and shonen, combining epic, futuristic and action together.

The imagination of the author is astounding, with the world building developed to such magical and futuristic detail. The story begins with a young Terrana caught in what seems real like the real world but is actually a dream. It is her ability, that when she dreams, she is actually transported to another place and so catches the attentions of other beings in the universe. I like the fact that Young focuses on a universe that is already developed and so saves time explaining on how it and its occupants came to be. The universe is divided into 13 sectors governed by aliens - and Earth, one of the most uncivilized of all planets, belongs in the 13th sector.

I also liked the concept of qi, a power which the aliens use to fight, meld, fly, depending on their individual abilities. It is similar to the chakra that you find so often in manga comics. There are some great action scenes in Ice Phoenix,a solid plot line and a surprise waiting at the end of each chapter. It kept me turning the pages, always wanting to know more. There are many great characters in this book which is probably not a good thing for me because it left me wanting to know more about them, and what made them the way they were.

Overall, Ice Phoenix is very well written, in an easy style that keeps the reader engaged all the way through. It is definitely not your average narrative for this one does have a lot of content, but trust me on this, every single word is well worth it! I think young adults as well as older readers will appreciate this fantasy/sci-fi

I was sent a free copy of this very generously from the author, in exchange for a review.

Its been a while since I've read a sci-fi book, (last book was Enders Game) after reading this I want to dive straight back into the Enders books and lots more sci-fi as well.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book, the plot is amazing, about a young girl who has lived her entire life on a remote island and spends her time with her best friend who is a dolphin, lobs cocunuts from trees and improves on her tree traversing and swimming everyday. Until one fateful day where her life is changed forever, she realises her dreams of other alien worlds and planets are real, and that she has a very rare skill named dreamwalking , where she can slip from one dimension to another. She quickly begins to realise she is anything but ordinary, In sector one, an area in space teeming with other worldy beings and mind blowing technology.

Will terrana come to terms with her new life in sector 1 where she must undergo training, make new friends, accept her loses.

If that wasn't enough we have a long forgotten alien race threatening the sector, deadly zombie virus outbreaks, demons, shapeshifters, long ardurous battles, and an epic space finale.

I especially loved the little elephant, dolphin and kitten in the story, and especially the ice phoenix race. Truly breathtaking concept that I can imagine would make an amazing manta animation.

From the tranquil isles of Fiji, Young takes the reader on a sun-kissed journey straight to an intergalactic world beyond one's wildest sci-fi imagination without missing a qi-fueled heartbeat! The Worlds that lie In Between are coloured with captivating strokes that bring to life amenable aliens and diabolical forces that leave one turning the pages for more. The story is powerful in it's delivery because one can sense that Young genuinely writes for herself and the reader benefits. Young's use of words is skilful and witty. The story lines woven together enthral, the descriptions are rousing, and the pace is thrilling. Behind the dark forces, technological gizmos, awesome battle scenes, and aliens with some excellent appendages, lies a very human story of the struggles within the characters, as much as between them. It is easy to struggle alongside Terrana, and root for the triumph of good over evil, but Young deftly draws the line between the two thin at times and the pulse quickens! The imagery she conjures is to be applauded, the plot is tight and unwavering. On occasion Terrana's helplessness can be frustrating, but with the presence of the other strong characters carries her through well. I have not been a reader of sci-fi in the past, but I await, impatiently, for a second installation! This first one, unfolded like a really good film in my head.

This book is a welcome addition to the world of fantasy books. It was a pleasure to read, with a easy flowing pace that kept you engaged throughout, while also keeping you interested untill the very end. Especially appealing was the descriptions of Fiji at the beginning with its rich detail.
I also loved a lot of the characters, though I found myself wishing there had been more of Mikin, with more of his backround explained. But we will leave that to the next book. And Kazu was amazing. Exactly the sort of cat that most cats think they are (
'*I is God*').
Saying that I always feel the Terrana should have been portrayed as slightly older, as the way she reacts and behaves seems to be someone around 16 or so. I am also never convinced about a magical/technology fusion when it comes to books like this. But this may just be the purest in me, and Sulin manages to pull it off much better than others that I have read.
Overall though, this is a refreshing book from a promising new author. With the book being both character driven with a decent plot. Some good twists throughout as well, although a couple did make me shout outloud, "Noooo....."
I am looking forward to reading more by this author, and am looking forward to reading the sequal soon.

This book is about action. The pace is quick and the characters varied, so much so that the few slower sections of the book are actually needed to catch your breath a bit. It's not a book of magic, or manga, or fantasy, or science fiction, or dream-like... it is its own entity entirely, crafted from a combination of all of these things. The mundane world of the main character, Terrana, quickly shifts to the extraordinary, though a Fijian beach setting is already pretty extraordinary for most of us. Rather than being an exercise in world (in this case Universe) building, Ice Phoenix thrives in always having another layer of development; strange things are stranger than you imagine, powerful people more powerful, and surprising people more surprising still.

In fairness, some exposition feels a bit forced, and some character development is a bit rushed, but the dreamlike nature of the novel, coupled with the manga style, makes these things minor. I started this book a bit slowly and in a controlled manner, but the further I got into it, the faster the pages turned, and I lost sleep to stay up reading; it is a page-turner. If you like imaginative settings with a heaping dose of action in an expansive and dreamlike universe... well, jackpot.

Ice Phoenix was my first experience with this genre, as I am more of a classical novel person, and it definitely showed me new literary horizons. I must confess that first I was worried it is going to be another teenage story about a bunch of kids doing magic at school but it soon turned out how wrong I was. The atmosphere of the story is incredibly dramatic, dark and it glued me to the book for a couple of nights although I suffered a serious case of pregnancy sleeping sickness. :-) I love books with a strong human story and Sulin Young managed to portait the characters so well that I truly suffered when someone was hurting the good guys and I could go to bed until the good guys were safe. Or safe at the moment. I admire the writer's imagination that created such a complex but compact parallel universe.

I always say that a good book should be long and it should have a sequel so that I can spend more time with my new imaginary friends. The Ice Phoenix meets the first condition and I hope the second one will come soon as well.

Brilliant, wonderful, so emotionally intense. I loved Ice Phoenix! I am a very slow reader but I just could not stop. I thought that Terrana and Master Drummik were terrific characters, and as the story progressed, I was impressed by the skill and story telling that the author possessed. The story isn't just about Terrana, and all the other characters in Ice Phoenix are so vivid and real. I had a hard time when I had to leave them at the end of the book.

Pa Gumpina and the 13 sectors are amazing worlds and I loved the feelings they gave me. The author possesses a talent for beautiful descriptions.

The queen and demons attracted and scared me. And the battles with the aliens are described with immense talent. I was completely absorbed by the story. Ice Phonenix is HUGE. I can't wait to read Sulin Young's next book!

One of the best books I have ever read, the characters are deep and very developed. The story line is complex and rich with details, side characters, history and such wonderful flow it is difficult to put the book down. The author is a true talent and I look forward to reading many more of her works in the future. This book is a mix of YA, Sci-Fi Star Wars & Star Trek.

The story is centered around a young Fiji girl Terrana who through a great tragedy is transported from a normal life into outer space and is the main character in the fight between good and evil, and almost nothing is as it seems. The twist and turns are enjoyable and realistic. Love Kazu!

Sulin, keep writing! When is the next book coming out?

I won this book from a Goodreads giveaway.

There was no requirement to write a review.

The good:
1) It was a very enjoyable read, I just wanted to keep reading it.
2) The book kept me intrigued and left a little mystery, so you were not sure what was going to happen.
3) was a nice clean book. Where it seems like a lot of authors are putting sex scenes into the books, this did not have any and that was very refreshing.

The Bad:
1) I really cannot think of anything that stands out to me.

Conclusion:
I did enjoy reading the book, and if more if the author continues the story line, I will definitely read more books in the series.

Was okay, reminded me of another young adult scify Harry Potter type book. It didn't really grab my attention because it was fairly slow moving.
