What secrets wait on the mountain?

The day she turned eighteen, Paula Tompkins fled her home in the Appalachian Mountains of Eastern Kentucky, leaving behind a life of tragedy and neglect. Determined to make it on her own, she starts a new life in Ohio and buries the memories of her past.

Ten years later, the death of her aunt Candace calls her back to the mountain. What was intended to be a down and back trip to pay her respects becomes an overnight stay when she rekindles old family friendships with her uncle and cousin. A late-night stroll through the woods reveals there is more than bad memories waiting for Paula on the mountain.

Something knows she's come back, and this time it doesn't want her to leave

When I first started reading this I didn't think I'd like it much. After about the fourth chapter or so I couldn't put it down. It's one of those kind of stories the sucks you in. Deeper and deeper the more you read. It's about leaving a town that has bad memories and having to go back for a funeral. Then things happen and they happen quickly. There really is no down time. Steve does and excellent job keeping the story moving till the end. Once you get to the end you're wanting more, but not in the bad kind of way. In the kind of way that it's just that good. So yeah it's a great story possibly one that will be even better with a re-read down the road....

From the start there was a sense of dread, of something lurking between the pages and it built until the end. Great cinematic-type jump scenes and folk horror. Loved the ending.

This book hooked me fast and I could not put it down. A cursed family in a battle with absolute evil. I recommend this to someone who wants a book that will keep you engaged, but likes twists.

A good, solid, easy to follow horror story with relatable, well written characters. It flows so easily and doesn't stumble. I liked how it was pretty straightforward, not a lot of messing around, either by the "entity", or by Paula, Angie and Larry. Paula has had a rough time in her life and thinks she is on track to make it better, but that is derailed when she goes home for a funeral. She learns some interesting and sad things from her past that mark her family as being in danger. They all dive in and try to sort out the evil right away. If there is another story shooting out from this, and I'd be sure to read it.

Steve L. Clark’s Down Home takes us to the deep, dark hills of eastern Kentucky, the place Paula Tompkins once fled to put trauma, tragedy and neglect behind her. Ten years later, her aunt Candace’s death lures her back home.

Returning to the mountains and the dark hills, Paula is plunged into a grim nightmare. Something else is waiting on the mountain, ancient and powerful, merciless and hungry. And if it gets its way, Paula will never escape again.

Centered around a young woman who returns to the town she once fled, Down Home by Steve L. Clark is a dark and foreboding tale about family secrets and a wicked creature that is coming for what they are due.

The is story starts out sad, we get a very brief uplifting bit, and then the story jumps right into the dread-filled, terrifying, and bloody! Impossible to put down, this book will hook you in immediately as you worry about how things will turn out.

A must read for horror fans! After reading, you’ll certainly be a bit more weary of entering the woods…

As someone who grew up in the area covered in this tale, I was immediately drawn in by the familiar territory. Clark explores the trauma of returning home, blending this realism with supernatural strains. Builds dread superbly, too.
