Take Two : A Contemporary New Adult Sexy Short Story

Rate this book
One night, two best friends and the threesome she’s been craving.

Introverted Anne can’t make the first move. Theo is too intimidating with his blond hair and his bespoke leather shoes, and Nathaniel is too broad with his messy man bun and his frayed T-shirts. What happens when they can no longer deny the sexual tension?

*** If you like erotic MFM romance with new adult characters, you’ll love this story. It contains multiple erotic scenes for lovers of explicit sex with a touch of romance and humor. ***

If you're looking for a full-length plot, this is not the book for you. This is a hot, steamy New Adult standalone MFM story with an HEA. No TWs apply to the spicy scenes.

2.76 "lots of potential, kind of hot, " stars !!

Thank you to Netgalley, the author and BooksGoSocial for an ecopy. This was released October 2024.

This a short erotic romance about the formation of a throuple between three college friends. This is a very female-centred romantic fantasy of how a young woman has both her sexual and emotional needs met by two men who are also best mates. The writing is decent but some of the dialogue is a bit awkward. The sex is somewhat steamy. This was a fair to good reading experience with tons of potential.

My sense is that this author could really push herself and write some meaningful longer works that take throuples seriously whether it be a romantic drama or erotic romance.

I also love the book cover....yes they are clothed but oh so sexy !

My one selfish little wish is that the men had been at least heteroflexible but hey I might be a little bi-(ased) lol !

This didn't get to me, sorry.
It is a really, REALLY, brief novella and in its briefness it totally delivers in terms of steam but it felt too rushed.

There was no introduction to the characters or their previous friendship or anything at all. We were hopping onto the treesome right away, page 1 and it got me off the mood to be honest.
I'm by no means judgy because I read a lot of questionable erotica as a guilty pleasure/ stress relief but I do need backstory and/or feelings to balance the steam in order to actually enjoy it.

The story in itself has potential but it lacks in delivery.

Thank you to the author and Netgalley for allowing me to read this arc. All opinions are/will be my own.

3.5 rounded up: I quite enjoyed this short story, left me wanting to read more about these characters. I feel like I could've got more into the story if it was written in 1st person. And sometimes there was quite a lot of background info or extensive thoughts but not enough to know exactly what's going on. In my opinion it would've been nice if those parts were a bit longer so you really know what's happening, or just shorter so it wouldn't get me out of the vibes of the story. But all and all I enjoyed it!

A very short novella where Anne, Nathaniel and Theo, three freinds who go to school together and decide to become a throuple.

A quick read that's always nice when you're in need of a good spicy book. Maybe if it were written in first person rather than third person, you could appreciate it more.

Thank you NetGalley and publisher for the ARC, all opinions are my own

In this short novella, we meet Anne, Nathaniel and Theo. They are three friends who go to school together. Nathaniel and Theo have been fantasizing about sharing their best friend Anne for a while. But what will happen if they do? And can they still be friends after?

This novella is very short. If you're looking for a book with a good plot, this book is not it. But if you are looking for a book full of spice, this book is for you.
The book is written in 3rd person, which i didn't like very much. It made it harder for me to understand the book and what was going on.
Overall it was a quick and spicy read. I wish it would be longer.

I received an advance review copy (ARC) for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Short novella of three students who decide to take their friendship to the next level and travel around Europe together having a lot of steamy fun on the way. For a short book the characters have a lot of personality and the plot is still a driving force of the story.

Reviewing as an ARC. Short spicy story of a girl and two guy friends. Overall, it was a good quick read if you’re looking for a spicy book. I believe it could’ve been a smoother story telling in first person pov instead of third person.

I got this as a NetGalley ARC.

I loved the story. It's simple, well thought out, and has an HEA. This is a short story, with a lot of smut, but also enough plot to make sense of everything and not questioning what is happening or why. My only criticism is for the beginning: there are a couple of paragraph set in the very near past that left me a bit confused. overall, a really good read!

A lovely little short story that begins seemingly very superficially and lustfully, but continues to unfold and reveal deeper layers to the characters and their relationship. We begin with a relatively kinky, elicit encounter between three friends, and theme as the reader have the privilege about learning more about each of them through a sometimes nonlinear narrative. There is more than meets the eye to each of these characters, as well as to the nature of the relationship between them. A story of empowerment, exploration, love and hope. Glad to have read this. Thank you to NetGalley for the opportunity to read; I will be looking for more from Ava Colt in the future!

ARC review - all views are my own and I have not been compensated for this review

"Introverted Anne can’t make the first move. Theo is too intimidating with his blond hair and his bespoke leather shoes, and Nathaniel is too broad with his messy man bun and his frayed T-shirts. What happens when they can no longer deny the sexual tension?"

All of this intrigued me about this story enough to read and review it - I love a friends to lovers story, MFM dynamics and opposite personality types in a relationship is my bread and butter, I can’t get enough of it. So when I started reading the story I was excited!

Unfortunately, I feel my excitement wasn’t warranted in this case. Before I explain why, I will say what I enjoyed about the story.

What I enjoyed:

- The initial sex scenes where Theo and Nathaniel are pleasing (and it’s probably accurate to say worshipping) Anne are enjoyable to read.
- Dividing the story into three sections.

As you may be able to tell, I didn’t care much for this story as these were the only things I could say I enjoyed. My reasons why are as follows:

Across the book, I found 11 obvious typos, with a couple that may or may not be - five each in parts one and two, and one in part 3. The editing of this story needs to be looked into as some of these typos included a lack of speech marks around dialogue, and being made to re-read it in the characters’ voice takes you out of the story.

I feel this story could take a lesson from the theatre saying “It’s called show business, not tell business”. This story, especially in the beginning, is exposition heavy but doesn’t really tell the reader anything. For example, when discussing being intimate with Theo and Nathaniel for the first time, Anne narrates “Didn’t they know how important this was to her?”, but how could they when even the reader has no idea - we know they’re her friends who she thinks are attractive, but that’s about it in terms of character development.

Some of the language used in part one sounds like it’s trying to be smarter than it is - loquacious, accoutrements - when the characters (we assume because we’re not told!) are between 18-23. I can honestly say I never used either of those words in everyday conversations at that age, and even now at 28 I’d struggle to. On the other hand, the Gen-Z slang used - “vintage cottage core” and “situationship” - will mean nothing in 10 years’ time. I understand this is how some young adults speak nowadays, but using this kind of slang will age the book faster - need I remind how “cheugy” was once the popular phrase and is now dead?

The author made it clear no trigger warnings applied to the spicy scenes, which is somewhat true. You know what else doesn’t apply? Talk of birth control, aftercare, safewords, likes and limits - unless you count the conversation briefly mentioned in part one THAT THE READER WASN’T INVITED TO READ ABOUT! The two men seem more versed in kink than Anne given their talk about restraints, so you would think they would make her have a safeword or consider limits and aftercare, but they don’t. The reasoning (*cough* excuse *cough*) given is that they knew Anne wouldn’t want to talk and debrief after sex, which would have been fine if the reader had been made aware of this beforehand! The reader was also uninformed as to the spit scene which isn’t my style of kink so perhaps a trigger warning or heads-up from the author would have been appreciated.
In part two, it’s difficult to know who’s narrative we are meant to be following as the pronouns change. Again, this shows a need for editing and confuses the reader.

The characters are two-dimensional despite the narrative’s insistence that they’re not. I got the impression that the desired character traits were: Theo is a snob with a heart of guild; Nathaniel is a big friendly giant, and Anne…is the woman they want to have sex with. I didn’t care for the characters because there wasn’t anything there for me to care about, and in a friends-to-lovers story this is important in my opinion. There was an attempt to bring humour in their “5 letter game” but this didn’t make sense to me - when Anne asked “What is this?” I assumed she meant their relationship going forward, but the game involved naming things around them?? I was very confused.

Anne, Theo and Nathaniel are in a throuple (sort of) by the end of the story and she refers to their dynamic as a circle. A CIRCLE. Not a shape with three sides…because a circle makes more sense. (Petty I know but this really frustrated me).

Overall, this was a book I wish I didn’t finish. The editing needs looking into, the characters were flat and boring, and I was left confused at more points than I should have been for a friends-to-lovers steamy novella.

1.5 ⭐ rounded up.

Take Two by Ava Colt follows three college students who take the leap from friends to lovers, but can they remain friends once they make that leap?

While plot depth isn’t always essential, the book’s execution is often muddled, making it hard to stay invested in the story, which is a shame as it has the potential to be a compelling exploration of friendship and romance, it’s just unfortunate that the execution falls short.

The handling of time shifts, especially in Part One, was confusing as there are moments that jump to different points in time without clear transitions back to the present. This lack of clarity disrupts the flow and makes the story hard to follow. Additionally, some scenes felt incomplete or lacking in detail. To borrow from the author’s own words, "you gotta make sure you commit," and unfortunately, it sometimes felt like this commitment was missing.

There were also several questionable word choices, which took me out of the story as I tried to decipher the intended meaning. Phrases like "She restricted the urge to suck in her stomach" instead of "resisted" should have been easily caught with more thorough editing. These errors created an unnecessary distraction, interrupting the immersion that good writing aims to provide.

The spice also didn’t quite deliver, feeling repetitive and lacking variety and intensity. Moreover, the characterisation of the main female character is inconsistent; she’s portrayed as both innocent and inexperienced in threesomes then suddenly aware of "the rules," making it hard to connect with her journey. However, as the story progresses, the writing does improve in consistency and clarity.

Take Two had potential, and in parts did make me chuckle but the editing oversights, lack of narrative cohesion, and mediocre spice kept it from fully delivering on its promise of a HEA.

Note: This ARC was provided for free by NetGalley, but all opinions are my own.

2.5 ** rounded down
🌶️🌶️🌶️ Plenty of spice
👎🏽 degradation & bdsm elements

Anne is studying abroad in Europe and has two new friends. Before their final semester abroad ends, they take a chance and break out of the friend zone. What follows is a night full of debauchery and firsts for the trio. Will this night end in disaster or become the beginning of something else?

The author makes it clear that this book isn’t about the plot, however, I found it had more of a storyline than I originally expected. Unfortunately some of the plot points were inserted via parentheses and in the middle of scenes. This occurs often and completely took away from what little storyline there was. I felt as if the beginning could have been better organized with a lot of the information dumped toward the end, being presented before the opening act 😉.

This novella wasn’t my taste and I debated if I should dnf. There are elements of degradation that I found absolutely disgusting, such as, spitting into the FMC mouth and slapping her face with his 🍆. Although the typographical/ grammatical errors and disjointed information dumps took away from the story, I’m glad I pushed through because I found I liked the end of part two and part three better.

This book was complimentary from NetGalley and the publisher in exchange for my honest opinion.

Contents:
Anne thinks her best friends Theo and Nathaniel are super hot. A threesome, the best solution? And maybe love for three will arise.

My opinion:
Take Two by Ava Colt is my first novel by the author.
I have to say I was a little disappointed and had higher expectations for the book.
I liked the cover.
However, the writing style took some getting used to. In my opinion, all the scenes were mixed up and I couldn't quite keep up. I could never tell which view it was and the scenes were very mixed up, which annoyed me.
Unfortunately, the characters had very little personality. I didn't really get to know them and didn't feel any connection between the characters. She just had no depth or personality, which I found very disappointing.

Overall it's not a good book and I won't recommend it either. However, if you expand on the book and write an all-round story, the book could be really good. I would give the book 1.5 stars.

I'm sorry if there are any spelling errors in my review. It's my first review in English and English is not my native language.

I’m not sure if this book is worth reading, if I’m honest. It wasn’t anything new or exciting. I found it rather boring.

The over all plot felt a bit disjointed. The writing style seemed chaotic as the story jumped around, telling us about random episodes of our characters life. That mostly happened in Part I and confused me a bit.

It’s a short book and the author even stated there will be no plot in this book; so what’s the point of telling us (When the group expressed their feelings by using only “5” words, Part II) about memories we’ll have no context of ?

There were a few moments where I truly questioned what am I reading.

“Theo scrunched up his brow like the time a German tourist spoke to him in fluent rapid Berlinese in the Van Loon.” - Berlinese isn’t a language ???

“Setting back feminism to the Stone Age shouldn’t feel this good.”
- a woman setting for what she wants in her sex life is now setting feminism back in time? Because she actually establishes what she wants and can do it?

And like a cherry on top of this whole mess of a c*mslut sundae, when all characters are suppose to have heart-warming moment of deciding on their relationship, it goes like…

“We want to date you, like for reals.”

I’m done.

Take Two: : A Contemporary New Adult Sexy Short Story
Ava Colt

This is an adult erotic novel. This book isn’t for everyone, but no book is. This is not a full-length novel. The main character in this tale is female, she is quiet, keeps to herself, she is an introvert. She is best friends with two males. She has known them since college.
Anne, Nathaniel and Theo are best friends that go to school together. Both Nathaniel and Theo are attracted to Anne; they fantasize about her. They travel around Europe together having hot steamy sexy along the way.
The plot of this book is rather weak however the steamy parts are well worth reading. The story is told in third person. The author uses time shift frequently which causes some confusion. There were a few places where the scenes needed more detail. The spice in this book is interesting but was repetitive, the same thing over and over. At times Anne felt innocent but at other times she felt experienced.
This tale has great potential and with a bit of tweaking here and there it can be a great read.
Thank you NetGalley for the review copy of this book. My reviews are my personal opinions.

Anne and her best friends, Theo and Nathaniel, find themselves in a hot, steamy New Adult standalone MFM story with an HEA. The tension grows as they cannot deny the sexual tension, and the story is perfect for fans of erotic MFM romance with new adult characters.

The first thing I noticed was that there are a few grammatical and punctuation errors. Next, this story felt very “vanilla,” and had lots of talk about doing things and less actually doing the things. Honestly, this wasn’t super spicy, but had a little bit of steam. The conversations felt like Tinder conversations between people in their early 20s, which I guess is the age range of these characters, so it’s fitting. Like, the MMCs were trying to be dominant daddies, but it just sounded cringey. It also felt like the author was trying to give some plot at times for a full-length novel, but scenes would end rather abruptly (like the first part).

Thank you to NetGalley and BooksGoSocial for the opportunity to read an Advanced Reader’s Copy (ARC) in exchange for my honest opinion.

I have many feeling about this book. To start with I get that this is a friends to lover erotic novella. But I feel like there wasn't much of a back ground to get to know the characters before we got into a spicy scene which kinda threw me off. The relationship was alright but we only got a small tidbit of how they new each other. The ending I absolutely loved. It was very sweet that was probably my favorite part of the whole book. When it came to non spicy scenes there wasn't much of a story t0 follow and you need more background stuff going on to have a storyline to go along with the spice. I feel like if it wasn't missing a background story and more details other that spicy I probably would have liked this a little more. I just couldn't connect with any of the characters because we really didn't know anything about them. It just fell kinda flat for me. I also felt that the spicy scenes were not very spicy for an erotic story. There was more say what they were wanting to do and not really following through with things. Like I said it just fell flat for me through the whole book.

The writing is sensual 🤤🥵 and hot 🔥🌶 with a touch of heart and emotion to it 🖤☺. The relationship between Ava, Nathaniel and Theo is balanced out perfectly without any messiness 🙌✨. Understanding and consent between them during physical contact and also outside of it is top notch. I appreciate the fact that, In just three chapters the whole book is summed up perfectly without many loose ends left behind. The HEA is just perfect for these three guys.
I read the whole book in single sitting.
3.5 tantalizing stars 🌟.
Negatives : the first chapter starts out of nowhere, so I wish there was some background introduction on how these guys meet and how they came to be friends.
📖
Blurb :
One night, two best friends and the threesome she’s been craving.
Introverted Anne can’t make the first move. Theo is too intimidating with his blond hair and his bespoke leather shoes, and Nathaniel is too broad with his messy man bun and his frayed T-shirts. What happens when they can no longer deny the sexual tension?

Anne, Theo & Nathaniel are college students who are studying abroad. Anne is attracted to Theo & Nathaniel, and the guys are both attracted to Anne. After a night out, the guys decide to gauge Anne's interest in being with them both for the night. Unbeknownst to the guys, this is something Anne has fantasized about, but she wasn't sure if the guys felt the same way. This starts the friends off on a summer fling that could potentially lead to more.

I liked this short, sweet, and streamy read. It was a little heavier on the plot than I expected, which was okay with me. There were a few information dumps with details that weren't really necessary. I also felt like the dialogue was a little clunky at times.

The story seemed to get better as it went along. The ending was satisfying and felt like the characters were headed into an exciting new chapter in their lives.

I mean the title is fairly honest and self explanatory and there certainly is a lot of (very steamy) action between one girl and two boys but there is a little bit of a lack of storyline inbetween. The chapters are sort of separated by venue and season but that’s about the extent of it. Definitely a bit niche and the writing is ok and doesn’t feel too repetitive in terms of the sex scenes but it did make me laugh a little that there was a token long word thrown in occasionally, maybe so we take it seriously and think ‘ooh this is good writing’ but actually it was a bit awkward, especially seeing as there were the equivalent number of grammatical errors eg your for you’re which have me the cringe factor more than the sex scenes did. Again, ok for the genre and if this is the kind of thing you were looking for but a bit more (some!) story would’ve been good rather than just a series of sex scenes.

Initially, I liked this story. A threesome between good friends intrigued me, and I was interested in where the story was going to go. I liked the first spicy scenes and dialogue. But after that, the story fell flat for me. Understanding that this was marketed as erotica and a shorter novella, I knew not to expect a whole lot of plot, but there was very VERY little plot in this, and what plot there was seemed to be lacking in good transition and clarity. There was too much bouncing back and forth, and necessary detail was sometimes left out. I found myself getting confused and wished there was more backstory to the characters. In addition, I found the writing wasn't keeping my attention. It started to seem repetitive to me, so I ended up skimming the whole last half of the book because I stopped caring about what happened.

Thank you to Netgalley and the author for allowing me to read this.

Honestly, Take Two was a disappointment. The writing felt like something straight out of Wattpad, lacking depth and sophistication. The plot seemed forced, with little character development or meaningful conflict. The dialogue was cringy at best, and at times, it felt like the author was trying way too hard to sound dramatic.

The worst part for me, though, was the sex scenes. They were poorly written—awkward, uncomfortable, and just… cringy. It seemed like they were included for shock value, but they ended up being completely off-putting. It’s as if the author didn’t have a clear understanding of chemistry or intimacy, which made the scenes feel more awkward than steamy.

Overall, I wouldn’t recommend this book. It tries to be steamy and emotional, but it falls flat in every aspect. If you're looking for something well-written and engaging, this is not it.

Thank you NetGalley for providing this ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Unfortunately, this book, for me, was a swing and a miss. Personally , I did not connect with the characters nor the storyline. I felt the writing style was confusing and I the syntax at times was off. I felt the plot was rushed and didn’t flow. In this particular work, I found multiple grammatical errors which removes the reader from the world.

Normally, I am a lover of MFM/MMF, however this story just fell short for me. The characters lacked depth, their motivations were weak; if at all present. The “spicy” scenes felt awkward and stunted, the characters not living up to the potential of the things they discussed and wanted for and from each other.

Unfortunately on this occasion, I cannot recommend this book.

I want to thank Netgalley for providing me with a digital arc for review.

Honestly, I loved the idea of this, I like to live vicariously through fictional characters, and when I saw the synopsis for this, it had my attention straight away.

While this is quite steamy, and I enjoyed some of the dirty talk, this just didn't quite hit the mark.

I knew this was a novella so I wasn't expecting in depth back stories for the characters, but they just felt flat, the author went into more detail with the most random things and they didn't add to the story at all.

Also, with the name of this novella, I was expecting Anne to actually take the two of them together, not one after the other (but that might just be an unpopular opinion).

I think that this has the potential to be a good one-handed read, but it's missing the spark.

This debut novella dives headfirst into the steamy world of a college-aged throuple, focusing on the FMC's journey with two male best friends. While the plot takes a backseat to the spicy scenes that start from page one, the author shows promise in their exploration of polyamorous relationships.

The chemistry between the characters sizzles, though some dialogue feels stilted at times. The book's strength lies in its unabashed approach to sexuality, though some readers might wish for deeper character development and plot complexity.

Recommended for readers who:

Enjoy high-heat romance from the first page
Appreciate female-centric narratives
Are interested in polyamorous relationships
Don't mind lighter plots in favor of steamy scenes

Thanks to Netgalley and Ava Colt for the download of this ARC.

This is an erotic short story about three friends, two men and a woman who go from friends to lovers. The story is divided into three different slots of time that help the reader keep up with the progression of the short story. It is a fast-paced read with quite the spice, a nice friendship and proof of trust from beginning to end. The two guys are attracted to their female friend and she is to them, so there is no room for doubts of what ifs about the mechanics of their relationship and it just happens in a refreshing way.
The spicy scene reflects different desires, all of them always according to their wants, so the fact that there is consent helps a lot to see some of the submissive practices in a better light.

Ava Colt’s Take Two explores the complex dynamics of a throuple between three college friends who reunite and find themselves navigating both past feelings and new desires. The story centers on the reconnection of three individuals whose bond goes beyond friendship, sparking a journey of self-discovery, trust, and deepening attraction.

I really enjoyed this short story! It’s the perfect, steamy little treat for when you’re looking for a quick, satisfying romance, that is also spice plenty. Colt does a great job capturing the chemistry and tension between the characters, making their connection feel authentic and passionate. Whether you’re a fan of new adult romance or just in need of a fun, light-hearted escape, Take Two is well worth the read.

Take Two by Ava Colt promises a steamy romance, but unfortunately, it doesn’t quite deliver. One of the biggest issues with the book is its length. The story feels rushed, and as a result, the connection between the three main characters never fully develops. With such a short page count, there’s simply not enough time for readers to become invested in their relationship or to feel any real chemistry between them.

While the book does include some intimate moments, even these scenes feel underwhelming. There’s no emotional depth or buildup, making them feel disconnected from the rest of the plot. Overall, Take Two might appeal to readers looking for something quick and steamy, but those seeking a deeper, more fleshed-out romance will likely be disappointed.

This book was a very short but fun read!

The steamy stuff starts right away and there truly wasn't much to the plot but given the category and length, that's understandable.

The beginning of the book was a tad hard for me to navigate as some things seemed a little jumbled together and time jumped around a bit but it eventually made sense. I love that the FMC felt like she could let go of her insecurities and worries with both MMCs but do wish there was a little more plot that explained how/why she could do this.

The spicy scenes were pretty fun to read and I think I discovered some things I might be curious about!

Overall, I enjoyed reading it.
Would I read again? No. However, if a full length was released, I'd happily give it a try!

This novella felt all over the place and felt a good deal longer than it actually was. There were multiple tenses and too many flashback scenes for a story this short (and on top of that, they each felt useless and like we were dumped into them). It also felt really stilted. It wasn't clear until the end WHY she was in Amsterdam at the beginning of the story, which we wouldn't have needed, except she alluded to their time being short, which made that detail feel important. The sex scenes were fun, but I didn't feel a connection to the characters, and likely wouldn't read about them going forward if there was a full-length book.
I was given a free copy of this book in return for my honest review.
