In an upifted universe, where the humans sneaked away when no one was looking, Earth is largely Cats and Dogs. The Dogs rule, at least in North America, and Otters rule in Space. In the first book, Kipper is hunting a mystery that takes her into space and eventually Mars where Kipper found the perfect Cat world. Provided, of course, that you were a perfectly bred cat.

In Otters In Space: Jupiter Deadly, Kipper encounters ALIENS or possibly uplifted reptiles who seem bent on attacking Jupiter and friendly Otter spacecraft. Before she can finish saying, "It's not my problem," a distress call goes out... from another Feline Utopia, a rather defenseless Utopia.

The book is less subversive, the action is more in your face and her Otter crewmates are as looney as ever. The sequel is wonderful! And all the characters get fleshed out much better in this book. The political intrigue is explained and the Dog culture is better explored. I like that in confronting the system, the average Dog that make up that system are better explored, rather than making the system outright evil or two dimensional.

Trudith is a dream in her Good Dog mode. Petra and Alistair are expanded quite nicely and revealed as real people, and not the almost flat characters in the first otter book (to be fair, they weren't in the Cat Havana much, just enough to spur Kipper on).

Emily the Octopus has a greatly expanded role as do octopi in general. She comes across as just alien enough. She can emote and the writer has mastered making sentient Octopi that aren't silly furs with eight arms. All the hard science in here just sneaks up on you.

Spoilers below:

When Kipper was introduced to OXE-Aqua, I was not only amused but impressed by the writing of that scene. I was disappointed we just got a less than detailed version of that event with the rescued Persians.

And the election for president seemed too soon. That could have been held off for Otters In Space three.

Because there WILL be an Otter In Space 3. HUZZAH!

See, I told you there would be spoilers.

this is less a book on its own and more a part one to octopus ascending. it introduces elements that while not really explored in this book, are very important in the next. the subplot with Alistair is really cool.

A good story, and sequel.

I enjoy the interaction among the different species in this series. The nuances keep the story moving and keep it interesting.

I liked Otters in Space very much, so I was keen to get hold of the sequel. In this appealing vision of the future, cats and dogs coexist uneasily on an Earth abandoned by the human 'First Race'. Dogs have the upper paw, while the physically smaller and weaker felines get a raw deal.

Otters in Space saw orphan tabby Kipper head into space in search of her missing sister and hook up with a crew of eccentric but friendly otters to look for a legendary cat paradise. Jupiter, Deadly opens where the first volume left off. The action is split between Kipper, up in space, and her brother Alistair, running for government office on Earth. An unexpected attack on one of Jupiter's moons ties in with canine political machinations below, and catapults (sorry) Kipper into the midst of new creatures and new dangers. Naturally, the otters - plus their octopus chef, Emily - come along for the ride, and Kipper finds herself heading up a rescue mission.

The goings-on back home may not be as fraught with peril as the space opera playing out above, but a cast of loveable cat and dog characters makes the earthbound narrative just as fun to read. There's sinister sheltie Morrison, Alistair's political opponent, and the return of dim but good-natured mongrel Trudith, amongst others.

If you haven't yet read Otters in Space, I recommend picking it up first. If you've read and enjoyed it, volume 2 won't disappoint.

I thought the second was slightly diminished from the first, as the plot branched out a lot more, with much more action being squeezed in to a still-small book. I lost track of the amount of chapters that began with 'Meanwhile on Earth...' or 'Meanwhile on Jupiter...' or something to the like.
That being said, when the pacing found some time to slow down a little, I thought that the story was well written with decent action happening. I just feel that the story could have been longer, with a little more attention given to certain elements of the plot.
A solid 4 stars though.

The continued adventures of Kipper in space and Trudith on Earth from Otters In Space: The Search for Cat Havana. This time the action heats up in both locations. Mary Lowd is a skillful and inventive writer, who has crafted this imaginative tale for readers of all ages. It is a terrific read.

I hope the story continues!

This being the second of the series was just as exciting and it was nice to see the continued character development. If you enjoy sci-fi , action, or adventure this is a good read for you and I encourage you to read the first as well.
