“That was your last one, Maisie. You’re done. It’s official.”
Fifteen months undercover. A fentanyl sting that nearly broke her. Maisie Doss walks away with a clean slate—but nothing about her feels clean. When an old friend dies under suspicious circumstances, Maisie’s pulled back into a world she swore she’d left behind.
In Slate Creek Hollow, secrets don’t stay buried.
Echoes of Betrayal is a gripping, hard-boiled mystery filled with grit, grief, and a heroine who never backs down.

Maisie has finally been freed from being a CI but that doesn’t mean she won’t get involved if she suspects something suspicious is going on. She returns to Slate Creek Hollow for a new start as herself, no aliases, no hiding, just Maisie. However it’s bee so long since she doesn’t have to pretend that she needs to figure out who she really is and what she wants from life. Turns out she still wants justice for those she cares for and she’s not afraid to use her skills from her CI stint to solve the murder of a beloved senior from the nursing home. Along the way Maisie learns to let new people in and accept help.
Maisie is relatable. She has trust issues, but she is learning to let Adam into her heart. The mystery as well written with plenty of drama, gossip and suspicious activity for Maisie and Adam to solve. This is a wonderful fourth book in the Maisie Dodd series.
Our thoughts and opinions are mine and mine alone.
Maisie Doss returned to Slate Creek Hollow about six months ago, where she had once hidden under an assumed name during her ripping and running days. Having served her time as a confidential informant, she was free, and that terrified her. She got her old job back at the Cheapside Diner under her real name, and even her former landlady offered to let her rent her former apartment when it became available. Until then, she stayed at Earlene’s home, a co-worker and friend.
During those six months, she began to learn who she really was. She worked hard to start over and do things right, and found it was better than when she tried to survive while looking over her shoulder. I genuinely liked Maisie as she was, especially since some of her escapades were helping family or friends. I’m still learning about this new Maisie, and yet I honestly like her. It is, however, unnerving to see her become somewhat vulnerable while learning to trust.
Maisie and Earlene volunteered at a nursing home and were friends with some of the residents. One was Dora Lee, a delightful nonagenarian who was active in some of the activities. Her favorite was the weekly bingo. Maisie overheard nurses talking about Dora Lee, who had missed bingo for the first time in years. She had asked her attorney to change her will and wanted it complete by the end of the week. Her son visited that day and they argued loudly, with him fussing about getting what he was “owed”.
After bingo, Maisie and Earlene went to Dora Lee’s room. Maisie found Dora Lee slumped over in her chair, dead. Shocked and saddened, she hung out as the staff followed procedures and talked with the sheriff. She talked briefly with Mr. Bartley, another resident and a lifelong friend of Dora Lee. The coroner, Adam Shannon, came in. Dr. Shannon planned to take her to the morgue to run a test. That seemed unusual for a lady her age, so Maisie continued to listen. She peeked in the folder with Dora Lee’s revised will, taking photos of the heir, and noted the unsigned signature block. The next morning, she heard Dora Lee died from a huge dose of digoxin – a heart medicine that was not prescribed for her.
After being a confidential informant, Maisie’s curiosity was easily piqued, and she knew a few search methods. She wanted justice for a dear lady who didn’t deserve to be murdered. She and Earlene discussed things they learned. She and Dr. Shannon also began to talk about Dora Lee’s case. The first time she visited his office, he invited her to dinner. She had misgivings, and they even had disagreements, and they began to work through them…just like friends would. Then Wes, her former handler and wannabe guy, came to town.
Maisie and Adam uncovered clues that could lead to several suspects. Then the killer came for Maisie…
This was such an excellent, intriguing mystery! I had no idea whodunit until the killer shared secrets long buried with Maisie. Maisie had worked her way into my heart in the first novel, and I enjoyed her even more as she discovered herself. Her descriptions of people and visuals were quite different from many other sleuths. She faced many struggles, including people watching to see when she was going to mess up again. I highly recommend Echoes of Betrayal, and hope we will visit Slate Creek Hollow again!
Many thanks to the author, who provided a pre-publication copy of this novel on request. This is my honest review.
Maisie Doss is free. No more undercover work as a CI for the FBI. She has paid her debt and her criminal past has been wiped clean. But she does not feel free. She needs to find herself again. These last few months have changed Maisie, and it is evident in every area of her life.
Now a friend has died. Maisie does not believe the death was from natural causes. Maisie already had a sharp mind, but she has also learned a thing or two while working with law enforcement undercover. In this book she is going to put those skills to work. She is determined to prove this death was murder, no matter the consequences.
Maisie is a complex character. She has had a rough past, but she is resilient and sassy, and she is determined to be the person she was meant to be. She is also pretty fearless. She realizes it will not be easy. I really like Maisie. She has overcome a lot in her life. Where some people would be six feet under or in a corner with a bottle, she has pulled herself up by her boot straps and become a better person because of her past. She has learned many lessons, some of them the hard way. But mostly importantly she believes in justice, which might be my favorite characteristic of this character.
This is not your usual cozy mystery from this author, but it is darn good. It still has her signature all over it with the mystery that is front and center for this book. She knows how to fool readers and hides the culprit well.
This is book 4 of this series. I would highly recommend you start with book 1 and move forward as each book will be more enjoyable if you know how Maisie arrived where she is today. It sounds like this may be the last one for Maisie Doss, and if so, I will miss her.
Thank you to the author for this ARC. I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Review: The characters are well rounded and well developed. Maise has paid her dues and she is free to walk away. But when someone is killed under suspicious circumstances, Maise cannot walk away. She has to figure out why she was killed and why it happened. The author is very talented in her descriptive writing and pulled me into the story from the very beginning. The writing style flows smoothly and it defines the characters very clearly by their actions and words. The mystery is well plotted and there were enough suspects to consider and clues to sift through and the mystery was not solved. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a good mystery. Find out what Maise’s been up to. I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book and provided my honest review.
The fourth book in the Maisie Doss series will keep you hooked from the beginning! Because of Maisie's past, she was offered a CI position by the FBI and if she helped them, her past would be wiped clean and she would be free. In this book, as CI she helped bring down a large drug operation. Her handler, Wes Dalton, sets her free. Not really knowing who the real Maisie Doss is and trying to find herself, she returns to Slate Creek Hollow to work as a waitress at the Cheapside Diner trying to begin a new life. She even volunteers at an assisted living home and was befriended by a woman there. But when she finds her friend dead, she has to investigate and bring justice to her friend. With the help of the coroner, Adam Shannon, Maisie dives into an investigation finding so many twists, turns and secrets can they solve the murder? And Maisie and Adam seem to find a spark. Will their relationship last, especially after Maisie receives a surprise visit? This is a well written, easy flowing book that I highly recommend as well as highly recommending the entire series! I can't wait to see what will happen next for Maisie. I admire her toughness when necessary as well as her humanity. I received an ARC of this book but the opinions expressed here are strictly my own
Tonya Kappes returns with Echoes of Betrayal, the fourth installment in the Maisie Doss Mystery series, and it’s a perfect blend of intrigue, Southern charm, and emotional depth.
Maisie Doss is ready for a new chapter after years of living undercover as a confidential informant. Back home in Slate Creek Hollow, Kentucky, she longs for a quiet life—serving sweet tea at the local diner and leaving danger in the past. But when Dora Lee Dare, a spirited nursing home resident, dies under suspicious circumstances, Maisie finds herself pulled back into the world of secrets and investigations she thought she’d left behind.
A hidden will, anonymous letters, and tangled family feuds point to long-buried betrayals in the tight-knit town. As Maisie follows the clues, she must navigate both the mystery of Dora Lee’s death and the unfinished business of her own past.
Kappes excels at weaving a story that’s both twisty and heartfelt. The mystery keeps readers guessing, while the vivid small-town setting makes Slate Creek Hollow feel like a place you’d want to visit—if only to gossip at the diner or share a glass of sweet tea on a front porch. Maisie is a heroine worth rooting for: strong, flawed, and finally learning to stop running from herself.
With a touch of slow-burn romance and plenty of Southern flair, Echoes of Betrayal is a cozy mystery that offers more than just clues—it delivers heart. Fans of small-town suspense and character-driven mysteries will find this installment impossible to put down.
Echoes of Betrayal is the fourth book in the Maisie Doss Mysteries by Tonya Kappes. I’m a huge fan of Tonya’s cozy mysteries but I really love this harder-than-a-cozy but softer-than-a-traditional-mystery series. The series is much darker and less Dottie-esque (a reference to the Campers and Criminals series). The books in this series take me a bit longer to read than other books/series in the author's catalog due to the complexity of the characters and plot. I don’t want to miss anything.
Maisie is an extraordinarily complex character with a complicated past and, while she’s fulfilled her obligations and out of the game, she seemingly still has a twisted future ahead of her. She’s a volunteer at a local nursing home. After bingo night, Maisie checks on a resident who is usually in attendance, and finds her dead in her room. The situation is mysterious and Maisie puts all of her past experiences into play to figure out what happened.
This book was fantastic. Echoes of Betrayal is an edge-of-your seat mystery. There are twists and turns that take the reader on a wild ride. I was completely blindsided by the outcome of Maisie’s sleuthing. The author set the mystery up well and I was shocked at how everything played out.
Mackie was finally free from being a CI. All charges were dropped against her & her records were expunged! She could finally go forward with a new life as herself! He headed back to Slate Creek Hollow & The Cheapside Diner as herself!
She & Earlene go to the Slate Creek Nursing Home every Wednesday evening to play bingo with the residents. One of the ladies who never misses, Dora Lee Dare is not there & after bingo ends, she & Earlene head to her room! Her light is off & the door is cracked open just an inch. They call her name but she doesn't answer. Something feels off so they go in. Dora Lee was in her chair by the window with her blanket tucked around her like always & her bingo rained in her hand. On the table beside her lays a folder with the top of the page visible, in bold letters: Last Will and Testament of Dora Lee Dare. Earlene goes to find one of the nurses. As two of the nurses come in, Rebecca the head nurse checks her pulse & officially says she is dead.
Will this be Maisie's first "investigation" as herself? Did Dora Lee die of natural causes or something else?
Sad that this is the last book in this series! I have enjoyed reading about Maisie's adventures!
After fifteen grueling months undercover in a fentanyl sting, Maisie walks away with a clean slate—but not without emotional scars and lingering conflict. Her record is sealed, and for the first time in a long while, she truly has a fresh start. Six months into this new chapter, Maisie is slowly rebuilding her life. She’s even volunteering at the local senior center, finding purpose in small moments—until one of the residents unexpectedly dies. When Maisie discovers her friend was murdered, she’s pulled right back into the world of investigations. She’s not alone in her search for the truth. Enter Adam, the charming and enigmatic coroner, who quickly becomes both an ally and a kindred spirit. With a trail of clues—including an unsigned will—Maisie faces a tangled web of suspects and motives. At the same time, she’s still figuring out who she is now, and revealing her past to others proves more challenging than she expected. I love the direction this series is heading. Watching Maisie navigate her second chapter is a compelling journey—full of twists I didn’t see coming and a deeply satisfying ending. A great mystery with heart, grit, and just the right touch of romance.
After adventures as a CI, Maisie is free to choose to live where she wants. She goes back to Slate Creek Hollow. It feels just right for her. She starts again working for the town diner and volunteering at the assisted living facility. One of her favorite people to visit at that facility is Dora Lee. Dora Lee is very old and beloved by all who know her. One morning Dora Lee is found dead in her bed. At first, it's thought she died of natural causes, but then something is found that makes he death become a murder investigation. Maisie begins to look into the old adage of who would gain. Her journey is one of many twists and turns. Maisie develops a closer relationship with Adam, the county coroner. Will she be able to leave her past behind and move forward? This is the fourth and final novel in the Maisie Doss per author Tonya Kappes. There is a good feeling of closure for the characters. I highly recommend reading the books in order to get to know Maisie. I am constantly amazed at the entertaining and engaging series that the author has written over time. I still need to catch up on some of them.
Echoes of Betrayal (Maisie Doss Mysteries Book 4) by Tonya Kappes – I’m so happy to share about this new release from a favorite mystery author! And it doesn’t matter what kind of mystery Tonya writes, she excels at it all!
Main character Maisie Doss is wrapping up fifteen months undercover, walking away with a clean slate.. But when an old friend dies under suspicious circumstances, Maisie’s pulled back into a world she swore she’d left behind in Slate Creek Hollow.
Whoa! This is my first Maisie Doss read and it won’t be my last. This is more of a hard-boiled, rather than cozy mystery and it is page turning. It took me a minute to settle in as I learned the characters and a bit of Maisie’s backstory (definitely adding books one to three to Mount TBR), but once I was in I could not put this down, reading this 210 page mystery in one sitting. Maisie is tough and brave and also so human. She’s such a well developed character that I loved rooting for. I didn’t guess the outcome and found my jaw dropped at several revealed secrets and twists. Strong writing, a fast-paced plot, and wonderful characters! @tonyakappesbooks
Echoes of Betrayal is another entertaining installment in Kappes' Maisie Doss mystery series. I have found that I have really enjoyed this series, and this latest addition certainly doesn't disappoint. Maisie is no longer a CI and is finally starting over in Slate Creek Hollow. Things are going well. She is back working at the diner, reconnected with friends, and is even helping call BINGO at the nursing home. When a resident of the nursing home and a friend dies unexpectedly, Maisie is suspicious. Family drama, a will in the process of being changed, and the timing make Maisie decide to step in and figure out what is going on.
Kappes does a great job at setting up an entertaining read. Things have changed so much since we last left Maisie, and it was nice to see this new dynamic and life for Maisie. Loved seeing some favorite characters back as well as some new ones. The book's mystery is full of enough twists and turns to keep the reader turning the pages. Overall Echoes of Betrayal proved to be a great read that I would most definitely recommend.
Received a copy of Echoes of Betrayal from the author.
Echoes of Betrayal is the fourth mystery in the Maisie Doss Mysteries series. Finally finished with her CI work, Maisie returns back to Slate Creek Hollow to start her life over. It doesn’t take long for trouble to find her and she stumbles upon a dead body. Unable to stop her curiosity, Maisie is determined to find out who the killer is and won’t rest until she does.
I have enjoyed this series from the beginning and liked the CI angle from the start of the series, but definitely enjoyed the twist this book took. No longer a CI, Maisie takes on this case as a concerned citizen. I like the characters in this series and found it so easy to get into and through this book. The mystery pulled me in from the start and I was hooked. The twists and turns took me on a fun ride and I was surprised by how everything wrapped up, but it made sense in hind sight. Overall, I enjoyed this mystery and can’t wait to see what else comes for Maisie.
Although Maisie Doss is now free, she doesn’t feel like it and still has guilt from some of her previous actions. She is doing her best to create a new life for herself in the place she once hung out to hide. She is developing new friendships including a new man in her life.
She is now working as a waitress in a local diner and calling BINGO at a senior living center. When one of the normal players does not show up, she and a friend check on her and find her dead. It appears to be a natural death, but it isn’t. Maisie is determined to find out who the killer is. As usual there are multiple suspects. I was shocked at the big reveal by the killer and the motive. There had been a big clue along the way.
I’m enjoying seeing how Maisie’s life outside being a CI is developing and am enjoying meeting the new people in her life.
I was fortunate to read an advanced copy of this engaging book. I look forward to seeing what’s next for Maisie.
This was a great addition to the Maisie Doss Mysteries as book # 4. Maisie has finally finished her undercover assignment for the FBI. She has put her criminal past behind her and done what was necessary to be able to start her life over again, but that's easier said than done. The undercover work has definitely altered Maisie's perception of her life and things in general. When a friend has died Maisie is naturally suspicious after her undercover time and dealing with the FBI. Maisie who thought her life would be easy back in Slate Creek Hollow realizes that it is anything but that and must find out what happened to her friend. When Maisie enlists the help of the coroner, Adam Shannon to solve the mystery she may have found a new love interest also. This is a must read series but make sure you go back and start with book one so you know Maisie's whole story so you can follow along. I'm really enjoying this new series.
The fourth book in the series by Tonya Kappes. Maisie Doss has finished her obligation as a Confidential informant. She returns to Slate Creek Hollow to try to live a normal life as herself Maisie Doss. Six months into her new stay in the town, a friend in the nursing/assisted living home passes away. She has a tough time believing it was from natural causes.
She and the town coroner, Adam Shannon, join forces to investigate. They become close during the investigation.
There are plenty of surprises, twists and turns as Maisie tries to figure out who she is now and where she wants to go in her life as well as find out what happened to her older friend.
I thought this was the best book. Looking forward to more books by Tonya Kappes.
I was given an advanced readers’ copy and these are my opinions.
Maisey Doss has finally completed her last assignment as a Confidential Informant (CI) and is now free to pursue life on her own terms. She returns to Slate Creek Hollow determined to live a normal life. When a friend is murdered, Maisey can’t sit idly by doing nothing. She relies on the skills she learned during her tough upbringing and while undercover as a CI to attempt to solve the crime along with the town coroner, Adam Shannon.
Maisey and Adam develop feelings for each other. Will they be strong enough to stand up to an unexpected visit from someone from her past?
I loved this awesome story with twists, turns, lots of emotion, and more! I’m sorry to see this series come to an end. Maisey is such a strong, likeable character. I'm going to miss her.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
oh this was perfect for Maisie.... she is finally master of her life and she decides to fight for justice...really it was a wonderful turn. I loved how she was adjusting and how people see her qualities and talents even whe she is doubting herself. She is back in a little town trying to blend in when someone she knows is found dead , by Maisie herself, but things does not seem normal so determined to give her friend justice Maisie start investigating and for that she meet the coroner who isn't shy to tell her he is interested.
a new temporary job, a love interest...Maisie will have to come true and it may be the best for her
Really this is the last book in the series at this point and it could be a perfect ending, even if i'm not against meeting Maisie again in far future, this is a serenity moment, a turning point in her life to leave us happy.
Facing prison, Miasie Doss opted to become a CI to bring down a fentanyl ring. The operation finally complete, she returns to Slate Creek Hollow to put her checkered past behind her and be “just Maisie”. But when a favorite senior citizen turns up murdered, she partners with hunky county coroner, Adam, to track down the killer. It seems he would like a more personal partnership, but will a man from her shadowy past derail the nascent romance?
Echoes is a bit of a departure from the delightful, cozy mysteries we've come to love from Ms. Kappes. Much darker, with edgier characters, this series nudges the suspense lane. We still get the small town vibe, the Southern charm, the delightful Kentucky setting, but Maisie is hardly the “America's sweetheart” most cozy protagonists are. It will be quite interesting to see when this grittier bent leads.
Once I started this book it was hard to put down. This story is so well written and everything flowed so well. I loved how if you’ve never read the other books in this series, Tonya puts just enough in so you call follow the entire series and not feel lost. Small town settings are my favorite and the most cozy. The setting and characters in this series does not disappoint!
I love how Maisie Doss was able to put her past behind her and start fresh! Maisie’s character is so well written. I love how tough and independent she is, but I also love how she doesn’t feel the need to solve these mysteries on her own. This book was so good and I loved the addition of characters and the sweet romance aspect of the book. I highly recommend reading this!
Working her last case with Agent Wes Dalton has Maisie Doss feeling a freedom she hasn’t felt in years. Since becoming a confidential informant for the FBI, she has been working undercover for them. Now that all charges against her have been dropped and her record is cleared, she has moved back to work at the Cheapside Diner and is making a life for herself. When a friend is found dead in her nursing home room Maisie knows that it is not an accident and she is now back in her role at investigator and begins working closely with the local coroner to find out what really happened to her friend. This has been a terrific series. This is my honest and voluntary review of an advanced copy of this book.
This is the fourth book in this series; I’ve read and enjoyed all the previous books also, but this book could stand alone well. I think the books just keep getting better—Maisie is a great main character, and now that she’s finished her obligations as a confidential informant, she’s restarting her life working as a waitress in a small Kentucky town and volunteering at a nursing home. When a resident dies, she decides to investigate, and along the way she becomes friends with the coroner, a non-typical doctor. They begin dating and make quite a good pair, both in the case-solving and romantically. I love this book and highly recommend it and the series; I was provided an ARC, which I really appreciate, but these opinions are my own.
Another cozy from the fabulous Tonya Kappes, although if you've read Ms. Kappes' other books, you'll find this is a bit different from what you've come to expect, but in a good way. In this newest book, a suspicious death at a senior home is the headliner. Maisie has completed her last assignment as a Confidential Informant, and now she simply cannot pass up the opportunity to dive into and investigate yet another murder, alongside her friend Earline. Can they figure out who did the dastardly deed? Twists and turns, along with a bit of the humor we've come to expect, will keep the reader engaged and keep you guessing till the end. This book may be read as a standalone, as the author does a great job with descriptors and backstory. Give this book a shot, you won't be sorry.
OMG. What an ending this book was, and a complete and full circle ending to the series.
Maisie Doss is such an amazing mystery solving character with a passion for finding the truth. I loved this character so much, and I loved getting to know her.
The storyline....well, it's got mystery, suspense, relationships, and murder all wrapped up in a package with a bow. I so enjoyed every twists and turns within this story and the remarkable ending to not only this book but the ending of this series. I must say this is my favorite story. It held a calming and peaceful ending for Maisie. It's so sad to know that this is the end of Maisie Doss, but the memories I hold in my heart will stay with me forever. I highly recommend this book.
“That was your last one, Maisie. You’re done. It’s official.”
After 15 months of doing undercover work as a confidential informant Maisie is free to walk away, a “clean slate.”She is looking to put her criminal past behind her and move on with her life. Can she move on? Will her past continue to haunt her? When an acquaintance dies Maisie has suspicions about the death. She can’t give up on the feeling she has. Plenty of drama, gossip, real life problems. I love how independent, hard headed and tough Maisie is even with her past mistakes always a reminder.
I received an ARC prior to publication and decided to voluntarily review it.
This is part of a series, but absolutely can be stand alone. This was the first one I read and didn't feel lost. From the first part of the book , I felt like I knew the town and people. Ms Kappes has done a great job, even if you havent read the other books you will be able to fit it together.
Maisie is back and free! Is she really though? After a friend is found dead, Maisie cant help herself. She starts digging and with the help of Adam the town coroner they work together to try to solve this murder.
I received an ARC and this is my honest opinion. I highly recommend, it will not disappoint.
This is a new version of Maisie. She is heading in a new direction with her new-found freedom. Maisie went back to live in Slate Creek Hollow after fulfilling her obligations with the law. When a woman that Maisie knows is found dead, Maisie isn't sure it was natural causes. Sure, the woman was old, but something just doesn't sit right with Maisie. She finds so many things that points to the woman's son but isn't so sure he is the one. She meets the coroner, Adam, during her investigation, and they hit it off right away. When she tells him about her past, she isn't sure he will want to stick around. Will she find the murderer? Will Adam stick around?
Maisie Doss has had a hard life, one of her making. Her file was recently cleared after many years working as a Confidential Informant. Maisie makes the decision to return to a small town in Kentucky, Slate Creek Hollow, to restart her life. She and her best friend, Earlene, volunteer at the nursing home in town. A regular weekly resident is missing from this week’s Bingo. Maisie and Earlene go to check on this resident. They discover Dora Lee has passed under mysterious circumstances. This story has quaint Southern saying, loads of mystery, twist and turns, friendship, and a budding romance. Will eagerly await the next book in the Maisie Doss Mystery Series.
After spending all those months working undercover as an informant, Maisie is finally free. Moving to Slate Creek Hollow was her chance for a fresh start. Along with working as a waitress, Maisie has been volunteering at the local nursing home. When she finds one of the residents dead under suspicious circumstances, she discovers that her past is not really behind her as she launches into investigating the death. Maisie is the perfect heroine-tough and intelligent with a heart as big as they come! Sprinkled with a touch of humor and a generous helping of romance, this mystery will keep you guessing until the very end!
