Betrothed to the Yeti

Rate this book
Will Jaya’s bitterness unleash the darkness in Pabu’s soul, or will their love save the village of corrupted Alpha from self-destruction?

Jaya, human colonist on Enceladus, Moon of Saturn, 2700 AD

As the third daughter of a beggar, my prospects at the Alpha’s betrothal ceremony range from horrific to nightmarish. Sometimes I wonder if I should have taken matters into my own hands…like my eldest sister, Nima. Her fate rests in her baby bump. Where I sleep tonight depends on the mercy of the Seer, and what the colony Leaders voted to do with me. Will I be chained in the brothel or somewhere more terrifying? Do I dare wish for a life far away from Alpha?

Pabu, Enceladus Yeti deemed the Protector of Humans

After generations of loneliness, I summoned the courage to request a companion in the villages’ tithes. I yearn for the relationship I had with the first Earthlings to land on this snowy wasteland, the ones who taught me the language and ways of humans. Jaya is an ill-tempered shell of those jovial humans. She says she’s my bride, but will my darkness take her claim as an invitation to consume her? How long can I hide my baser instincts when my fondness for her grows by the day and her angry suit of armor melts faster than snow…

Monstrous grooms and beastly brides? Don't be afraid of falling in love... it's super-natural! Explore the entire Monster Brides series, one tantalizing happily-ever-after at a time!

On the icy moon of Enceladus, Jaya, a resilient young woman is wed to Pabu, a Yeti, a "Protector God" for the humans. Jaya struggles in her relationship with Pabu and the realization that her people sacrifice food and other things to him in his temple, yet he doesn’t really need the tribute. Jaya’s journey is a rollercoaster of emotions, from initial fear to a deep connection with Pabu’s dual nature. The story deals with family, sacrifice, and love, driving Jaya to navigate her past traumas and the complexities of her newfound relationship. Pabu, the mysterious Yeti, is both a protector and a force of internal conflict, providing a compelling exploration of duality. He struggles with his darker side and is unsure if Jaya will be able to accept that aspect of him. As Jaya and Pabu's relationship evolves, so does their determination to challenge the oppressive societal norms of the villages. The struggle against inequality and the desire to help those in need sheds light on class disparities and the struggle for justice. The contrast between the opulence of Alpha and the suffering behind the "lower wall" paints a vivid picture of a divided society. The intimacy between Jaya and Pabu gradually evolves in the story, but it feels appropriate to allow them to grow in their feelings and connection before they rush into things. Lovely blend of action, romance, and thought-provoking ideas looking at how power dynamics can shape a world.

This was quite enjoyable; the romance was a bit on the slow side as the story seemed more focused on the heroine and her overcoming the experiences of starvation and emotional/mental abuse. She was quite prickly and irritated with the hero, snapping off at him and he was too much of a marshmallow to handle her. Eventually she softens and trusts him, but it takes a while.

My one complaint is that it’s never explicitly stated if the hero was a virgin. He had some kind of romantic bond with a previous woman, but at one point it implied he hadn’t come
To maturity when he was with her and they just kissed and cuddled. I really didn’t care for that and thought it was unnecessary.

Safe-ish. Hero has loved before but has been celibate for decades. Possible virgin. Heroine is a virgin and belongs only to her hero. No others, no sharing or cheating. HEA but epilogue is only a few months out.

3.5 stars rounded down.
It was good, but it struggles a little with the tone. At times it felt like it was going to be dark and bloody, but then it wasn't. It had some light and fluffy moments, but it wasn’t cozy. There’s talk of darkness, and revenge, but in the end that leads to “oh, the darkness inside decided not to be so violent”. It was a WTF moment that kinda took away some of the enjoyment. The Yeti does let some predators loose on the village, but that happens in the background and we’re left with the “maybe they survived” feeling. I wanted a less vague retribution.
It was entertaining and easy to read.

“Please don’t let his request be to learn how humans taste.”
Oh please do!!
I loved the character building in this book. The turmoil that Jaya endured was very real and gave an element of depth to her character that added to her growth throughout the book. All the while her sweet and dark yeti was patient and steady. This story speaks volumes to love and how it’s steadfast.

This charming, sweet romance had me rooting for Jaya from the first page!

Jaya was among the lowest class of citizens in Alpha. She and her family were treated terribly and had absolutely nothing at times. My heart broke for Jaya and I found myself rooting for her throughout the story.

This book made me giddy watching Pablo and Jaya’s love blossom. They had different ideas in how the world was and it was interesting to watch them teach one another that what they knew wasn’t the whole picture.

I felt like this was a wonderful blend of romance, self healing, and action!.

It was an okayish read, Pabu is a sweetheart I can't say the same to Jaya, I understood she went through a lot of trauma but her anger on Pabu wasn't really necessary, he barely knows anything about how she lived yet he tried his best to make her happy, literally 80% of book was her being hot and cold, whining and yelling at him while Pabu tiptoed around her to not trigger her, overall if you have lots of free time go ahead and read.

While I would call this a romance, this story is more so about Jaya’s healing… her transition from starving young girl to a woman who stands up for herself and what she wants. Pabu helps her through this transition by providing her with safety, knowledge, and the security of someone who will not abandon her or abuse their relationship. She spent her entire life taking care of others, and yet still those people offered her no kindness… so it’s no wonder she is so closed off.

Once with Pabu, Jaya is feisty but fearful. She’s ignorant to a lot of things, but her naïveté comes out as snark. She’s definitely a fight and flight type of gal. Seeing how she gets when her and Pabu actually talk to each other makes it worth it though. I like seeing her feistiness slowly melt with her better understanding of things. The bath scene is so cute.

I enjoy Pabu’s chapters the most I think. The way he speaks is ethereal but with a touch of savagery. I appreciate his voice a lot. I really just wanted more information about the world that they’re in, I wanted to know more about the yeti society and what led to Pabu being cast out of it. Not much is explained in regards to Pabu at all… which is disappointing, considering he’s such a big part of the story. I want to see more of this world quite desperately, so if the author ever feels like expanding upon it I’ll be right there to read it.

The spice is minimal, only two scenes that were mostly glossed over with simple descriptions but nothing more. The function of the spicy scenes aren’t really for the sake of spice… but to show the connection between the characters and the evolution of their relationship/bond.

I am SUCH a fangirl for Marilyn Barr’s yeti romances! BETROTHED TO THE YETI features a colony on one of Saturn’s moons in the future, where a group of humans have been sent and basically abandoned by Earth, and Jaya’s settlement is not doing well. She’s constantly cold and starving and the book opens with a forced marriage ceremony where she and her sisters are being sold off to pay her father’s debts. When she finds she’s being sold to a yeti, she fears she’s going to be dinner, but she soon finds Pabu is fascinated with humans and especially with Jaya (and her goat, who is adorbs.) One thing I just can’t get enough of in Marilyn Barr’s books is the amazing world building. This world is so well thought out from Pabu’s cave/home, to how the colony/settlements would work, to the hardships Jaya would have faced. I greedily absorbed every detail, and loved Pabu and Jaya on page together, from him wanting to bond with her goat as a friend (love) to how they wanted to care for the goat and its lambs, to the stews they made. It’s a sweet and steamy story, and I loved every minute. I really felt for Jaya as a character, and even though I didn’t like some of the choices other characters made, I pitied how the harsh circumstances of their upbringing might have skewed their thinking. I loved every minute of this book and look forward to Barr’s next delightful yeti romance! 5/5 stars.

I am already a Marilyn Barr fan, so I had high hopes for this book, and it didn't disappoint! The very first chapter sucked me in with the incredible world building and attention to detail. I especially enjoyed the culture the author created, as it felt so unique and fun to learn about.

I really liked Jaya in this story. She's been incredibly wronged by the people who should love her the most, but she still has the spunk and courage to face her fate, taking her chances with the yeti. This character gave me quite the whiplash, but I enjoyed every second of it! And the goats. You just can't help but to love all the goats.

If you enjoy monster/alien romances with spunky heroines, touch her and regret it kind of heroes, and incredible world building, then this is the book for you. I definitely recommend!

What a very unusual setting. The beginning of this book was a little confusing, but as the story went along you understood more and more of what this planet was like. They story of Jaya is heartbreaking and the struggles she and others endured. Then you have Pabu- the yeti- who has taken things for what they are for so long he does not fully understand the situation.
Together they come to an understanding. They both grow to love each other. Most of all to accept all parts of each other. This story was not your normal love story. It had some dark aspects to the story. A frozen planet does not present as an exciting place to live. But with changes and good leadership they will adjust.

This is really more of a sci fi alien romance than a straight up monster romance. Overall, it was a good story with a lot of interesting world building.

I was a little bit confused about why Alpha was so different from the other villages and why the Yeti never knew about it when he spent so much time watching the humans. Did he just not bother to walk down there and take a look? Why didn’t the Priestess tell him?

The ending got a little crazy, and sort of silly, and it didn’t feel satisfying. I was confused about how Jaya was feeding all these goat kids and also the baby she brought home. Wasn’t the whole point of taking them to town to avoid them starving because of lack of milk?

Anyway, setting aside some of the info gaps, it will still pretty good.

The author has wrote a very compelling story of healing and learning to love.
I found Pabu to be an interesting combination of animal and sentient being. It was intriguing how he considered his animalistic nature to be something to fear. Your heart will break for poor Jaya and all she has endured. I enjoyed how they start to learn from each other and their differences. This story makes a strong point on how we all have two sides, the evil and the good. Which side we decide to feed will define what kind of person we are.

I will admit to expecting something light and sweet when I started this book and instead I got something deep and emotional and filled with turmoil and character growth! I loved this book for the dramatic scenes and the world building it offered. Jaya is so very jaded, bitter, hostile... Pabu is naive as well as battling his own inner battles. Watching them heal was beautiful and the friendship and love they grow between them warms the soul. This is my first "Yeti" book by Barr, but certainly won't be the last!

Jaya is in the annual bride ceremony with her sisters to pay off her father’s debts she is worried that she will be sent to the brothel but no the seer tells her that she has been betrothed to a yeti, Jaya is frightened but when she see’s Pabu she screams and is a bit defiant and Pabu is amused. I loved this story and the characters, a couple of chuckle worthy moments and there were heartbreaking scenes which made me sad but I highly recommend this book.

Original and different. Human are rotten to one another and the Aplha settlement is full of that including Jaya's sisters. One is someone spirited and the other cowardly. Jaya's only salvation turned out to be a Yeti. His generosity and patience won her frozen heart, protected her from predators, and showed her that not all settlements are awful like Alpha.
Wonderful characters, dangers, steam, original, entertaining, sweetly slow love story.

This is more than a simple Monster Bride Romance. There are lots of layers to the storyline and the author creates an amazingly vivid word to set the story in. There are dystopian and utopian elements woven together to create something unique and captivating for readers.
I like the characters and there are some interesting interactions between the individuals in the storyline. The pace of the book is good and once you start reading you don’t want to stop. I would enjoy reading more books set in this world in the future.

Love unexpectedly

Beware of the family you are born into they are more trouble than the one you create.

Jaya comes from sheer poverty due to the casre system and her father's lack of basic parenting. Pabu had been the human protector since as long as he remembered, but he only knew of one village, and he thought they were all the same... NOT!!!

Once he gets Jaya as his bride, he finds there are horrors more than he can imagine, and he and Jaya set to make is all right after learning a few lessons in love, vulnerability, friendship and care through food f4om each other.

Great read, loved Jaya and Pabu. So cute together. Nima was just a spoilt witch, hated her sisters. Loved how their romance was slow but steady and that their relationship progressed at a healthy rate with them both opening up. The goats made the story really 🤣😂 can just imagine a temple filled with hundreds of baby goats 😂. Great book, so glad I was able to arc read it. Can’t wait for more from this author.

Good

I like this book. I feel that it’s the right length & there’s a good plot to it with a hint of spice. I love the transformation of Jaya as she gains confidence throughout the book. There are some grammatical errors (missing punctuation/spelling) so just be aware.

This is a delightful and unusual sci fi/monster romance. Loved how our characters worked so hard on their relationship- finding love where they didn’t expect it. Aspects of the setting and plot were quite dark at times but I’m into that.

I have yet to be disappointed with anything that comes from Marilyn! You can't not love her 'beasts'. It's not your everyday love match and that's one of the best parts!

I didn’t love the writing style and the heroine wasn’t someone I could connect to. There was instalove on the Yeti side and the FMC tried too hard at being selfless. The world building could’ve used a lot of work. The ending was anticlimactic and kind of unnecessary, the return to Alpha. It really wasn’t my favorite story.
