Secrets Within Us

Rate this book
I was on the run, desperate to survive. Kip was safety and security, all wrapped up into one lumberjack alpha of a man, too good to turn down.
He saved me, offering me care and shelter in his secluded slice of heaven in the icy mountains. The same mountains that tried to kill me on my way to him.
His warm hands and dominant nature melted the ice I’d built around my heart for decades.
At first, he demanded to know what happened to me, but as more time went on, he stopped.
And I stopped dreading the day he would find out.
Then the Sheriff showed up, armed and on a manhunt.
They were looking for me.
But would the why behind the crime change their minds about me in the end?
Would Kip ever see me as anything but red-handed, ever again?

pi-Zap-9 'S𝐄C𝐑E𝐓S W𝐈T𝐇I𝐍 𝐔S' Is a stand alone romance book by new to me author A.M. McCoy

Saw this one doing the rounds and couldn't help myself, off to Amazon I went, the blurb sounded right up my alley!! And who doesn't want to read about a HOT lumberjack!!.

The storyline pulled me in straight away, loving the setting, the wilderness and the gripping survival aspect of her story. These two were instantly attracted to the other even though she was getting over a traumatic experience he became her safe haven. I’m not usually one to like Insta love stories but in this case with being who they were and what they’d both endured made sense how quickly they gravitated towards each other and healed the other in the process.

Both mcs had baggage. And up to 53% neither of them had opened up to each other. Their relationship was superficial and steamy.

Up to that point I ended up tired waiting to find out about their backstories and simply dnf it, not caring for the people who scarred them in their pasts.

Beautiful story, it deals with a lot of heavy topics such as trauma and abuse of different sorts. This is the first book in a long time to actually make me cry, I highly recommend it but check TWs.

I think there is a certain kind of skill when it comes to writing a trauma filled story while keeping with your own writing style which is spicy. I'm just here to say that A.M. McCoy did just that. This one is a little different from what she has written in the past but I absolutely loved it.

Hadley and Kip's story is so beautifully tragic while filled with growth. It's like navigating through landmines trying to get to the other side. One is fighting demons and loss from the past hidden away from the world. The other is fighting the devil in the present. Both ending up in each others orbit unexpectedly.

I want to say more but I recommend taking the journey yourself after you check out the list because this one definitely has one.

This book was simply amazing. The way A.M McCoy wrote this story was just so beautiful and amazing.

Kip and Hadleys story is amazing. And the way that they were able to just instantly click and have a connection and heal each other and able to come together, was just beautiful.

It’s definitely a book you won’t wanna put down and one I would recommend over and over again. A.M McCoy never seems to disappoint when it comes to her books and keeps you wanting more when every single page.

Definitely would recommend reading the trigger warnings before diving into this book, but the story is just beautiful.

Spoilers ahead, read at your own risk.

1 star bc the writing was at least good. But jesus christ. It was insta lust at it’s finest. Homegirl is laying there still cold and stiff from the crutches of death after u found her buried in feets of snow with her hand ensnared in your trap and u get a hard on??? Thats basically necrophilia at that point, which brings me to my next point. Im a doctor, so I know there aint no way in helllll girly pop would have survived that ordeal. 2 days walking in a snow storm without proper clothes, after enduring a week of rape/beatings by a killer and escaping, then hand being caught in a trap and spending the night with hand bleeding and under a shit ton of snow. Then the rest of the book barely mentions her hand lol how was she cooking for him 2 days later?? That hand deeef needed stitches (euphemism for a fuckin full on hand reconstruction by some good plastic and hand surgeons together) if she survived at all. Plus with all the beatings she took, she would for sure have some internal bleeding too. But nah after 2 days shes already banging the sexy jerk lumberjack who found her. Wtf?? Shes not traumatized?? Huh??

The progression from lust (which took 2 pages) to feelings (which took 3 pages) was insane lol and the way he treated her after she found out about his dead family?? Unredeeamable imo. He put his hands on her, shoved her down so hard she fell, picked her up from her arm and basically kicked her out the house after saying the nastiest shit ever to her. After girly pop was beaten to hell before he found her. Like ????. Oh and when she says she killed the pastor bc he is the one who did all that to her, the H at first yells at her that he doesnt believe it. ???? Sir ????? He didnt grovel after AT ALL.

Hero was a jerk and an asshole pining for his dead wife who didnt deserve the h. Do not read this crap.

I honestly don’t even have the words to explain how much I absolutely LOVED this book!!

From the moment A.M. McCoy mentioned this book, I knew I wouldn’t be disappointed since everything she writes is pure GOLD!!

Kip and Hadley…Like I am seriously just so speechless!! These two characters are both going through their own things and don’t want to let the other in but at the same time all they want is each other!!

The horrors that Hadley had to go through and the heartbreak that devastated Kip, honestly led them both to their happily ever afters.

Can’t wait to see what A.M. McCoy brings us next time!!

A. M. McCoy absolutely never disappoints. I jumped into her books at Twisted Ink and she’ll never get ride of me. The emotional journey that she can take a reader on is like no other, she manages to evoke such emotion from her readers and Secrets Within Us is at the top of the emotional list.

Hadley and Kip are on such individual journeys, but manage to perfectly weave their lives together in the most impactful ways. The growth, development, and overall healing is so incredible. Each character had broken parts that the other healed so perfectly, regardless of their own traumas and demons chasing them.

Secrets Within Us is a tear jerker and will stay with me for a long while. Check your trigger warnings, but the healing this book provided both on the pages and in little pieces of my heart was so incredible powerful.

I wanted to give it 5 stars, I really did

Thoughts: this was such a good story. Strong FMC before and after her trauma. Broken alpha MMC. He saves her from the wilderness after her trauma. They fall for each other but keep their secrets about what happened to themselves. Fearing the other wouldn’t want them.
BUT, what got me was the almost IMMEDIATE forgiveness. There was “I’m sorry” but that was it. What happened would absolutely warrant more than just I’m sorry and I can get over it.

***spoilers - whole story***
Hadley - 23 y/o orphan that was in the foster care system. She is a paralegal in NY but quit to start a new journey in FL. At the bus station she gets picked up and taken to the Mountains by “Saint”. He hurts her and even had a grave dug for her. 6 days she was put through h€ll. Saint was done with her and tried to take her life but she fought back and got the upper hand and ended his life instead. Then she ran into the snow cover mountains to escape.
Kip - was in the military and had a wife and 2 kids. While deployed, his family was unalived (doesn’t say why, needed that info though) and he moved to their vacation cabin in the mountains, keeping all their memories in the kids room and locked up. Now he stays by himself with his dog.
Kip saves Hadley from a snare trap and takes her back to his cabin. He sees the damage to her body, knowing she was hurt by someone. He cares for her and helps her heal. Hadley doesn’t want to tell Kip what happened. Hadley sees the Molly tattoo and he doesn’t want to talk about it, but they both engage in a relationship anyway.
Kip goes off on Hadley for making a BLT wrong because she doesn’t make it like Molly. (This hurt me because he still wouldn’t tell her who Molly was and Hadley thought she was still alive). While Kip is out doing chores Hadley enters the kids’ room looking through memories. Kip finds her and goes off, not just mad but vengeful. He says all sorts of mean unforgiving words just because he is hurt. Then he forces her roughly out of his home demanding she leave. Mike (friend of Kip’s) comes and realizes who Hadley is and that she is wanted for unaliving Pastor Daniels (Saint). The town knows him as a sweet community fixture and can’t believe he was a monster.
Kip immediately thinks she is lying and even tells her so. Then the sheriff shows up and arrests her. She briefly tells them how he was a monster and then Kip believes her (he saw the dang bruises and cuts and burns for goodness sake!!!).
Her old lawyer boss comes to help and she finally tells her story. The sheriff asks for her to help find Saint’s hidden door to the basement.
Kip finally opens up about his family.
All is forgiven 🙄🙄🙄
I wish there was more groveling. The things he said about her to her face when he was mad was heart breaking and very close to what Saint would tell her (alone, worthless, useless, etc…)

Secrets Within Us

Secrets Within Us by A.M. McCoy was everything I hoped it would be and more! Coming in with a HEAVY trigger warning list and beautiful characters, this book captured my heart and it will live rent free in my head forever. Hadley and Kip’s story is one for the survivors. With a tragic beginning and a catastrophic end, I was hooked from the very beginning.

I knew Secrets Within Us was going to be phenomenal but I wasn’t prepared for the emotional roller coaster it took me on. It tugged at the heart strings and had me feeling a million different emotions. With that being said, take the TW’s seriously. The story is worth every single emotion drawn out during your journey! This book is strength, hope, and courage. Especially for readers to know that they’re not a victim for sharing their story, but a survivor for telling their truth. Ally does this so respectfully and beautifully!

All in all, I throughly enjoyed Hadley and Kip’s story. The only negative I have to say is I wish it was longer! Ally stepped out of her comfort zone for this tragically beautiful story and she absolutely nailed it. And I’m going to warn once again because mental health is priority above all else, TAKE THE TW LIST SERIOUSLY! It does have a HEA but both characters go through hell to get there. It isn’t pretty but it is a beautiful ending. I cannot wait for more books like this from the author!
I hope you enjoy this as much as I do.

Ok plot....

Well, Ally decided to just pull this book out of nowhere, and as one of her #1 fans, I was here for it. It starts very, very fast. Hadley is running in the dead of winter when she is trapped in an outdoor trap and pretty much thinks this is the end. In the night, kip and hear screams in hisnsecluded cabin but can't find anything until the next day when they find Hadley buried in the snow. He rushes her home where he gets her thawed out and realizes she is covered in bruises, cuts, and a ton of abuse. From the very beginning, they are both very hidden in their pain and truths. He is a grumpy man, and she is someone who has never been anything to anyone. The story is very, in an insta love one bed troupe. The closer they get, the more the secrets are bubbling to the surface. The ending was gut-wrenching for reactions. I kinda went catatonic when kip pain came out. Hadley is a strong woman, and she holds her head high. It was a tad rushed in some parts, but also it was a shorter book, and she had to pack a lot of it, I believe, once you hit 60%. This is a very much healing journey for both of them. Loved the epilogue it's true Ally style. I'm so happy she pulled this out of her pocket and let us into this world.

This book will leave you hooked from just a couple pages in. You are trying to figure out what kind of secrets Hadley and Kip could have. This is an incredible journey of healing within yourself, healing with a partner, and how to overcome any type of trauma with yourself or with someone else. It shows the struggles of trauma and what it can do to relationships. It does get pretty dark and heavy but A.M McCoy did a fantastic job of going from heavy to light and funny and sexy. This is definitely one of the books I suggest not going in blind and actually reading the trigger list!

Dont get me wrong this isn’t a how to get over trauma book or even really how to work through it (that’s completely up to you and how you see fit to do) but it does show that even with having to heal whatever you are needing to heal from that you can still have your happy ending and I think that’s something really special.

⭐️ 3.75

First things first—definitely check those trigger warnings before diving in 👀 because there are situations in here that could hit hard for some readers.

This story had a lot of potential, and I’ll admit…the last half surprised me with a twist I didn’t see coming. 👏 I just wish there had been a little more plot outside of the FMC + MMC stuck in a cabin, working through trauma, and arguing over who was going to open up first. It felt a bit repetitive at times.

That ending though?? 👏 It left me wishing we had more of THAT storyline.

Overall: not a bad read, not a new favorite either—but it might hit the right dark romance notes for you depending on what you like.

✨ Tropes you’ll find inside:
• Pregnancy trope 🤰
• Ex-military MMC 🪖
• Age gap ❤️‍🔥
• Forced proximity 🌲
• Grumpy MMC 😒

Would I say don’t read it? Nope. Just go in knowing it might not tick every single box for you.

Wasn't ready for that

This story had me all over the place. It was a romance with a twist of mystery and thriller and I was here for it.
Hadley is a "runaway" from New York that finds herself lost in the snowy mountains of Utah. She's on death's door fighting a terrible trauma when Kip finds her.
Kip is a mountain man recluse with his own trauma when he brings Hadley into his home to heal. Trauma meets trauma as their lust burns away the cold mountain weather.
In the short time Hadley is with Kip she starts to heal mentally, emotionally, and physically. Kip is slower to heal, but eventually his heart thaws
Almost too good to be true. Reality comes knocking and Hadley's past could rip apart everything.
It is a HEA with an epilog that I truly do hate. Its such an easy out for an ending but I guess it makes sense for the book.

READ THE TW LIST!
***!!!POSSIBLE SPOILER!!!***

Hadley and Kip…. Kip and Hadley…. Holy moly guacamole! I went into this book with an open mind due to some trigger warmings(I haven’t found a TW that I couldn’t get through). The healing path and trauma bonding between these two characters is *chefs kiss*. A.M McCoy can capture your attention from the first page and keep it throughout the whole book. I loved that there was representation, healing, battles (externally and internally), great banter, and making up A LOT. The spice was spicy and the plot was twisty. The ending, although there was closure, left me wanting more from this couple. I will be recommending this book to anyone that will listen, so long as they can get through the trigger warnings.

I'll read anything by A.M. McCoy, and "Secrets Within Us" did not disappoint. I was a bit concerned about the trigger warnings, but the story was so well written that it didn't bother me. The chemistry between Kip and Hadley was perfect, and the smut was on fire! The only reason I gave it 4 stars is because I think the last 3 chapters were rushed. I wanted more!

She did it again!! I have read multiple books that A.M McCoy was written. This is my second book that I have had the opportunity to ARC read for. And I must say this is my favorite story that she has written. I actually re-read it twice because I simply couldn’t get enough for the story.

Kip and Hadley are absolutely everything! The characters development and growth was just everything. I feel like everyone who reads this story will find something that resonates with them.

I am dark romance girly and this is one of my favorites, this is an easy five star read for me and I can’t wait to read again! I honestly can not say enough good things about this book.

I’m going to be completely honest, this wasn’t my favorite book from Ally, which is SO hard to say because I’ve ADORED all her books so much, but I think the biggest reason is because Kip pissed me off way too much😂 he was such an asshole and although he might’ve had valid reasons, I didn’t like how he treated Hadley for most of the book😅 I loved seeing Hadley recover and break away from her trauma in the way she needed to but I think she should’ve made Kip grovel a little more. The ending did actually make me cry, and I finally did end up falling in love with Kip after all, it just took a bit to get there.

What an emotional rollercoaster our author takes us on. Secrets are there for sure but some are justified and needed.

I found our characters to have so much depth and pain for various reasons. Our MC's are so amazing. Although our MMC did tick me off a couple times and for our FMC I just wanted to wrap her up and never let her feel hurt again.

There is no comparison to their secrets. However their reactions to the others secrets is painful and at points frustrating.

I am so glad I was able to experience this side to our author. I loved this story so very much!

I absolutely loved reading this book! It is a trigger warning read for sure. The way AM wrote this was so beautiful and hits hard on the emotions. There is spice but again there is triggering things so read warnings.

This story follows Hadley and what she went through and found love even in the darkest of times and enduring traumatic experiences then is saved by Kip who has his own trauma that he is dealing with and finding his way through it to love Hadley the way she needs and help her through the trauma. There is spice never fear, and that was 👩‍🍳 💋!

What a journey this book takes you on, from the very first attention grabbing word to the last period signaling the end of the book.

Kip and Hadley both have their own trauma filled pasts that they must work through together. But the chemistry they have is one for the ages. It is off the charts steamy. There a moments where you think that they won’t finally get their happily ever after, but in true A.M McCoy fashion, they realize that they cannot live without the other after some major trauma dump.

Kip and Hadley are like real people, with real traumas. That is why I love A.M. McCoy as an author. She makes the characters relatable, more human.

This a for sure 5 ⭐️ book, that will definitely be a re-read in the future!

Check your triggers!!

Where to begin? This book put me through so many emotions. From frustration that Kip and Hadley wouldn’t just communicate about their pasts. To anger at Kip because if you know then you know. Then to sadness for what Hadley had endured. But ended with happiness and a few tears. I absolutely loved this book. Definitely don’t go in lightly. Check the trigger warnings!! But if you can get past them you’ll be so glad you did to see the development and growth these characters go through to the end.

5/5 for story telling and writing
5/5 for spicy and trauma
My one critique is the story seemed to go from trauma to sex and back to trauma very fast and it didn't fully feel like a natural situation to me, personally. But that's just my opinion!
Other than that, I loved the story, loved the way that my heart ached for both Hadley and Kip and their own stories and what happened to them to make them who they are now.
Definitely recommending this to my friends!

As being a fan of the author and reading all of her books I have to say this one was unique in its own way. But still have the magic all her books have. It was suspenseful and threw me for a loop through out the book. I cannot recommend reading this book enough. I never imagined how Hadley would meet Kip and what had all happened for her to get there. The plot moved fluidly throughout the whole story very well.

A.M. McCoy is easily becoming my absolute favorite author. I’ve loved all the romance novels I’ve read so far, and this one throws a little mystery into the mix and I cannot get enough. The heartache I felt for both Kip and Hadley was intense.. the trauma and how they reacted to each other in the beginning was so devastating but relatable. My heart stopped with every fight they had but was put back together when they finally knew each others past and helped work through it.

Dark, mystery, strong FMC, emotional, HEA.
If any of these things interest you, this is the book for you! I honestly cant describe how I’m feeling right now, it was that good! Hadley is one of the strongest fmc’s I’ve read about, her strength is astounding. Kip confused me at first but once his story was told, I melted towards him. Since my first A.M. read in 2022, I cant get enough of what she puts out 🖤

Let me just tell you readers you will not be disappointed on the other side, so strap in for the ride!

I loved this story . It had the perfect amount of spice 🌶. The story definitely had me at one point almost sobbing ( I don't want to give a spoiler), but this book is a must-read! I love Hadley's character, her story, although not beautiful it captured your heart throughout the story like I could almost feel it. I lived kip (we all need a kip). I started nd finished all within a day!! So good from start to finish!!¡¡ thanks A.M.McCoy for sharing it with me!

Wow. This was a story to unpack. The trauma that both characters experienced and their struggles and growth made an amazing story to read. A.M. McCoy was able to write such a heavy subject but was still able to give those characters so much life, hope, a little retribution and an amazing HEA that actually had me tear up a bit. Those Epilogues hit me in the feels. Absolutely a top read, I loved it.
