August 23, 2024Welp, this was disappointing and a shock because I did enjoy the books prior. But this one? It's a disaster. What went wrong?! 😤🥴 Sorry for the swearing (and more below), but this book really pissed the sh*t out of me.
I didn't expect a pathetic FMC from this series, but wow, Hope freaking surprised me—in a bad f*cking way. I've lost count of how many times she threw herself on Vaughn, only for him to reject her and act like a grade-A a-hole towards her. Then she would get pissed, but a crumb of niceties from him would make her a puddle of goo at his feet in an instant. This woman has no working brain cells or self-respect. Because why the f*ck would you let some douchebag treat you like that and crave more of his a-holishness? All throughout the book, she did the f*cking chasing and begging, and maaan, I've never been ashamed to be a woman after reading all the things she did here. I feel like dying from the secondhand embarrassment I got from Hope; it's not f*cking funny. I cannot understand how this series went from having three strong FMCs to this utterly weak, pathetic, and horny mess of a character. 🤧
Don't get me started with Vaughn; this guy was a big prick through and through. He was proud to be an a-hole and was not even ashamed about it. The hot and cold treatment was f*cking annoying to read. He treated her like crap for the majority of this story and would feel guilty about it but wouldn't apologize, because that's not in his vocabulary. And yet, he would do the same sh*t all over again. I've read asshole MMCs that I've come to love, but Vaughn here will never be one of those. Every time he opens his mouth and does something to hurt Hope, he awakens this violence in me that has me wanting to get inside the book so I could just f*cking deck him for being a douchecanoe. Argh! This guy and his never ending baggage were so infuriating to read. And as much as I wanted to empathize with him and what he went through, I couldn't do it because the result of his captivity made him an insufferable a-hole.
Then the possessiveness sh*t that maybe was supposed to be swoony only irritated the heck out of me. The story ended at the 84% mark, and he only pulled his stupid head out of his stupid ass at the 79% mark. See how it took him so looong to realize what a dumb idiot he was?? 😤
I might still read the second part of this duet because I'm more intrigued by how they're going to dismantle the cartel than the freaking romance presented here. 🤧
Anyway, while I didn't enjoy the MCs and their annoying relationship, I always loved the writing style of this author and her story telling. I'll just delude myself and say that this was a one (or two since this is part one of a duet) bad blip in this series. Because this book is definitely not it, and seems more like an anomaly. 😮💨

It’s truly USELESS to make this a duology. This book is 275 pages and NOTHING happens, and then it just ends?!?! Right when the climax of the book would be beginning it’s done, over, finished. I’m refusing to read book 2 because wtf how stupid is it to split this into 2 books.
So what did happen in these 275 pages?? We have Hope and Vaughn, Hope has ran away from her criminal overlord father and is hiding in a small tourist village in Mexico. Vaughn is a mercenary who helps rescue trafficking victims and take down cartels. Vaughn and Hope meet when Vaughns group want to see if she knows where her dad is so they can take him down. Which is wild because she’s BEEN ON THE RUN FOR 3 YEARS WHY DK YOU THINK SHED KNOW WHERE HER FATHER IS??? Anyway. Vaughn is a tortured soul cuz apparently he had been kidnapped and tortured at some point? And he won’t let anyone touch him or his scars— also weird because he’s covered in tattoos so apparently someone could touch him to apply all that art. Also apparently he can rail women as long as their hands are tied so that feels silly and dumb.
So in the span of 10 days Vaughn and Hope live together trying to figure out her dads whereabouts and awkwardly hooking up and then the book just ends. I didn’t believe the love or attraction, it all just felt so blah for a book with a wild storyline.

New-to-me author unlocked! To say I am intrigued is an understatement. Weaver has herself a new reader. 😊
The world, this book, the writing, the characters, the author… everything about it was all new to me but what I quickly realised once I started reading was that I was going to want to read more.
It had all the goodness I look for in my romance reads:
✔ Genuine chemistry between its MCs
✔ A well-thought-out plot
✔ Flow
✔ Suspense
✔ An engaging cast of characters
✔ Spice and all things nice
There are no pretences here. It’s one of those books where the premise hooks you in and the story itself followed through.
Although it’s a standalone within an interconnected series, after having read this book, I couldn’t help but feel that it would’ve been a much fuller reading experience if I had read the previous books first, as the world-building had already been established and the existing cast of characters having in-depth history in place.
But in saying that, it didn’t take away from the fact that I still really enjoyed it. I don’t cope with slow-burn romances well, but the steadily developing sexual tension between Vaughn (aka Grim) and Hope only elevated the build-up to their romantic (albeit complex) relationship. My anticipation in seeing them finally cave on their feelings for one another, plus the impending danger looming over their heads, made for one gripping read.
It was a bit of a slow start but the second Grim stepped into Hope’s life, I was instantaneously on high alert, at the edge of my seat, and turning those pages.
If you like sassy heroines and alpha-hole heroes, intense, yet humorous banter between your MCs, then Grim and Hope will have you giggling. There’s light and shade in their story, and Weaver has done a brilliant job of injecting a nice balance of each element to keep the progressing storytelling engaging.
It’s a darkish military romance with mafia elements included. Mafia romance is a staple in my reading wheelhouse, but military romance is a sub-genre I tend to gravitate towards whenever, or if ever the mood strikes. I’ve only read a small handful of military romance books, and after having been introduced to the Team Zulu Series, I can confirm that list has gotten a smidge longer.
I’m not in the slightest bit well-versed in anything military related besides what I’ve seen in shows, films, and the occasional doco, but I will say that Grim, his team, and their expertise came off convincing, which made certain scenarios believable.
Both Grim and Hope are raw, flawed, yet fleshed-out characters have horrific backstories resulting from brutality and life-long traumas. Their experiences can be disturbing and/or triggering for some readers to read about. Please note it broaches on sensitive subject matters such as graphic violence, kidnapping, torture, death, substance abuse, and human trafficking, resulting in mental, physical, and emotional PTSD. With mature themes and sexual content, this book is intended for readers 18+ only.
Besides the romantic element, the friendships present was another highlight to see. The support they provided the MCs was much-needed lightness and positive dynamics in their lives. These secondary characters are their found-families. Their roles and overall presence added another layer to their story.
It’s steady-paced storytelling and told from dual POVs (with funny inner monologues included). I found the writing effortless to follow and the characters likable, genuine, and in many ways relatable.
With how this book concluded, I’m keen to read the next one and see how Grim and Hope navigate through the next chapter of their story.

Four and a half stars!
After being scarred physically and mentally and left for dead, Hope is hiding out and trying to avoid her past, while building herself a stable future. Vaughn carries his own scars from his past and visits a small village searching for signs of the cartel while trying to rebuild his cover as a pilot for hire. When he stops by a bar for a quick drink, he is intrigued by his waitress who doesn’t seem intimidated by him… in fact, she calls him Grim and throws sass. When he discovers her real identity, Vaughn becomes her bodyguard, keeping her safe while she tries to offer Team Zulu information to help bring down the cartel.
This story pulled me in quickly and left me eagerly awaiting the second book of this duet! Thankfully the wait for book two isn’t too long. It’s a bit of a slow burn, but the chemistry sizzles from the first meet. Told from both characters voices, you get funny inner monologues and to see what each is thinking about the other while also knowing that there is going to be drama and angst as secrets are revealed. The story sucked me in from the beginning, keeping me entertained and entrenched in the action.
This is part one of a duo logo that is part of a larger series, but you don’t have to read the other books in Team Zulu to understand this story. I would recommend it if you enjoy former military turned private mercenary team members fighting against human trafficking, however. It’s a great series!

I received this book as an ARC thank you to Julie for the opportunity to read this book early.
I’m obsessed I didn’t think any book in this series would top my love of The Heist but this one is definitely getting close. I also wasn’t sure about Vaughn when he was first introduced in the other books but DAMN I’m in love (sorry Kane). Julie writes some of the sexiest men ever and they just keep getting better and her female leads are always such strong bad*sses. Hope is probably my favorite of her FMCs so far!
Also I don’t know how I missed the part where this was a duet but when I was 98% in and realized the story was only just beginning I was confused and then I saw “End of Book 1” and I almost screamed. WHAT DO YOU MEAN I HAVE TO WAIT?!?! Like I know October is coming soon but that is also way too far away.
Anyway Julie did it again and I can’t wait for the rest of Vaughn and Hopes story!!

5⭐️ 2.5🌶 CF-friendly
Julie Weaver does it again! This was fantastic! I absolutely devoured this book and I need book 2 right now. Vaughn is a traumatized and scarred absolute beast of a man, with a deadly set of skills and a gruff (or grim ;)) personality. Vaughn is working with team Zulu to track down the leader of a cartel, only to stumble across the cartel boss' daughter, Hope. Hope is a fire cracker of a personality, but has scars of her own. The dynamic between Vaughn and Hope is everything and just so entertaining, and hot, to read. Vaughn now has to protect Hope while they find her father and put an end to his cartel. Book one ends in a way that will hopefully transition seamlessly into book two. It's not a cliffhanger thankfully!

Hope and Vaughn are two scarred people who use each other to heal. They are perfect for each other and this book was an enemies to lovers story. I loved watching them fall and the side characters were a bonus! Well written and leads you into book 2! Definitely a cliff hanger but ends with a great “happy for now” ending! I can’t wait to see how their relationship flourishes!

I've been waiting for over a year for this book because, from the previous ones, I knew Julie has the gift of creating the perfect mix of action, suspense, and romantic tension, all while bringing in protagonists full of incredible quirks. In this book, she took all that to another level.
Vaughn's appearance in the previous book had already piqued my curiosity because I knew he was a broken man, though I didn't realize how much. He turned out to be everything I expected and more.
Vaughn arrives in Mexico on a mission, but a beer in a bar changes everything when he meets Hope, a woman with a scarred face, whose courage never ceases to surprise him. Her connection to the Cartel that Vaughn is trying to take down makes it impossible for him to stay away from her.
This book was perfect; I wouldn’t change a thing. Hope has a past marked by her origins, with deep physical and mental scars, yet she never stops being courageous and resilient, never bowing to adversity. Vaughn is broken—since he was wounded, his body and soul have been marked, and he pushes everyone away because he doesn’t believe he deserves them. The depth of their traumas makes the book profoundly emotional as they gradually open up to each other, and it made my heart ache many times. They are funny and full of attitude, but when they strip that away, the depth of their emotions and internal struggles is wonderful. Vaughn's appearance in the previous book had already piqued my curiosity because I knew he was a broken man, though I didn't realize how much. He turned out to be everything I expected and more.
Vaughn arrives in Mexico on a mission, but a beer in a bar changes everything when he meets Hope, a woman with a scarred face, whose courage never ceases to surprise him. Her connection to the Cartel that Vaughn is trying to take down makes it impossible for him to stay away from her.
This book was perfect; I wouldn’t change a thing. Hope has a past marked by her origins, with deep physical and mental scars, yet she never stops being courageous and resilient, never bowing to adversity. Vaughn is broken—since he was wounded, his body and soul have been marked, and he pushes everyone away because he doesn’t believe he deserves them. The depth of their traumas makes the book profoundly emotional as they gradually open up to each other, and it made my heart ache many times. They are funny and full of attitude, but when they strip that away, the depth of their emotions and internal struggles is wonderful. The story is so captivating. I love the banter and animosity between Grim and Gatita (also knows as Vaughn and Hope) is just top tier🔥.
How their paths crossed made so much sense and worked brilliantly with their characters. We got to learn to know them, both from their own perspectives and from each others.
I really appreciate that Vaughn was a certified asshole almost the entire book. I love that he didn’t try to hide his issues and horrible personality traits - he was showing himself in his asshole glory the entire time, yet Hope has an uncanny way of seeing through the facade part of his assholeness. And well, his darkness calling to hers makes perfect sense.
There’s something poetic about an individual who hides their scars as much as possible and another individual who can’t hide their scars, meeting and healing each other, step by step. I loved the parallel between Vaughn being in awe of Hope’s scars and seeing her resilience, strength and bravery while looking at it - while he himself worked so hard to cover his. I appreciate that he notice the parallel himself and I hope he will use this pov in his recovery.
The romance and chemistry between the two of them is one thing. The main storyline is next, and it was easy to follow, well detailed, though through and well written (in my opinion). While the plot isn’t groundbreaking, it’s interesting, true to the genre, well written and intriguing! I’m so excited to see where this story takes us!

I absolutely love the Team Zulu series, and Scarred Souls is a jaw-dropping addition! These books are addictive and just the best sort of binge when you want broody bad boys that have cinnamony centres. Vaughn is no different, but he is also DISTINCTLY different from the other Zulu men. 😂 The enemies to lovers dynamics between Vaughn and Hope is particularly delicious to my twisted little romance-loving heart ❤️🔥—they both have heavy backstories, but their jagged edges fit together oh-so-beautifully. Both characters have endured severe trauma, and the yummiest part for me is that while Vaughn is set up to play the big bad protector 🛡️, it’s Hope who heals (or at least, she’s trying but Vaughn is pretty messed up in a way that makes him the BEST fictional BF) Vaughn from his past. And as usual, Julie Weaver writes the BEST BANTER! *screams* The dialogue is incredible. I’ve pretty much chortled, cackled, giggled, squealed… the whole nine yards.

I received the ARC early yesterday morning and I finished the book in less than 24 hours, so it could go without saying that I loved the book. I loved the dynamic between Hope and Vaughn. The constant banter, Hope holding her own when Vaughn expects to intimidate her, I ate it up. I really enjoyed the juxtaposition of moments of vulnerability that often surfaced during the bickering. They both fought hard to put up walls but neither could keep them up. I somehow didn’t realize that this book would be in two parts, but I am anxiously awaiting the arrival of part two!

I absolute adored this book. I was curious about Vaughn in the previous book, but I was also sceptical because of how distant and closed off he was. I didn’t know how that would affect his story and I couldn’t for the life of me imagine the type of romantic interest he would have. But honestly, Hope being this firecracker, making Vaughn question his own existence by riling him up, made their relationship even more entertaining than I could have even imagined. If you’ve read my reviews before, you know I adore FMCs supporting MMCs rather than minimising their struggles, and this book is a perfect example of how to have two characters with struggles without minimising any of them. However, even with the couple’s happy-for-now moment, the book had quite an abrupt ending.
Vaughn was an ex-Navy pilot, who was held captive before his team rescued him. He had been left traumatised and scarred not only emotionally but physically. He was distant, broody and full of anger but only directed at those who deserved it. He was certainly a morally grey character, but he also had a caring, sweeter side that he pretty much tried to hide away. Luckily his broodiness didn’t overpower his character, which at the beginning I was afraid of. Instead, he had some pretty unforgettable witty comebacks. I felt sorry for him for not being able to be touched because of the trauma that he was left with, but at the same time, this aspect of his character did make the story more intriguing.
“Now get in the goddamn truck before I have the absolute pleasure of manhandling your ungrateful ass in there.”
Hope, who was a cartel princess, hid away in a little seaside village, hoping her past wouldn’t come back to hurt her. Oh boy, was she wrong. As a result of her past, she was left with some rather visible scars, however, it didn’t stop her from helping others, it didn’t stop her from trying to see a more positive side of things and didn’t reduce her to a demure woman. Hope was a very strong and independent character, and whilst she deemed herself a coward for hiding away, I just wanted to give her a big hug and tell her that it was alright. Cartel princess or not, she couldn’t have done anything, couldn’t have changed things alone.
“I could barely stand being in a room with him for five minutes without wanting to kiss him or kill him.”
As for the romance, I wanted to say that it was enemies-to-lovers, but rather it was enemies-to-lovers-to-enemies-to-lovers. They had some heavy chemistry from the beginning, but with both of them being intentionally irritating towards each other, they became lovers before they could even overcome the enemies part. Hope loved to make assumptions and Vaughn was a terrible communicator. Hope loved riling Vaughn up and he did not want to babysit a cartel princess. Hope pushed Vaughn’s buttons and regardless of her making him regret every decision he has ever made, he found her amusing. The constant back-and-forth, the banter, the witty comebacks and sarcastic remarks created some hilarious scenes, because if anything Hope enjoyed getting on Vaughn’s nerves and Vaughn enjoyed putting Hope in her place. Their dynamic made me giggle like a schoolgirl.
“There’s only one place begging will get you what you want, and it’s not out here.”
But then I also adored when they were vulnerable with each other, the way they supported each other. I always say that MMCs don’t get enough support, and that FMCs’ struggles are always emphasised. So I cannot describe how much I appreciated when we saw Hope’s struggles, traumas and insecurities, but it did not take away from Vaughn’s experiences, if anything Hope stood up and was ready to support Vaughn on his own healing journey. That was brilliantly executed.
“If I have my hands on you before you touch me, it might ground me. Remind me who I’m with and that you’re not a threat.”
Plot-wise not much happened, rather it was more focused on the characters meanwhile it built-up what I assume will then drive the plot of the second instalment. That is not to say that nothing happened because even their first encounter ended up with some people needing medical attention, it’s just the overarching plot will come to fruition in the second book. I did feel that this book had quite an abrupt ending. The couple was already together in a happy-for-now sense, however, somehow the ending felt too sudden. I know all my questions will be answered in the next book and more of the characters vulnerability will be explored, because Vaughn definitely needs to work on the way his past is affecting him, but it still felt very quick. I did not feel like the ending was smooth. I know I will love the next book, it is not even a question in my mind, but without reading the second book, I do feel like this is the type of duology that needs to be read back to back otherwise it will feel like a sudden ending.
Overall, I adored this book, and regardless of my scepticism at the beginning, I grew to love Vaughn. Hope and Vaughn’s dynamic was full of chemistry and sarcasm, tension, but also support, trust and vulnerability. I can’t wait to get my hands on the second book, because I really enjoyed this one. However, Brandon’s book was an absolute masterpiece and whilst I loved this book, it didn’t bring out the level of love I felt for The Payback, so Scarred Souls by Julie Weaver got 4/5 stars.

Lmao, Hope really said “Not today” 😂 Oh, she is sassy and strong. I like her so far. Vaughn is a tortured soul with some heavy past, so I expected him to be almost too grumpy and too broody. I thought the book would be very dark in that sense. But nah, the man is broody, but his interactions with Hope, the witty comebacks and sarcastic remarks not only create an amazing chemistry, but it’s also entertaining.

I absolutely adore when we see a more vulnerable side of the MMCs whilst FMCs support them.
Often MMCs’ vulnerabilities and insecurities are pushed aside or swept under the rug to focus on the FMCs’ vulnerability forcing MMCs into a supporting role. But here both of them showed vulnerability and Vaughn’s was especially touched upon because of its extent. It’s such a heartbreaking but beautiful scene.

Scarred Souls is Book #1 in a new duet that is part of the Team Zulu Series by Julie Weaver and I would suggest reading all the Team Zulu books before diving into this one even though you could read this duet as a complete standalone series. I only suggest reading them all because getting to know these characters and how they all interact with each other makes for a more enjoyable read – at least I think so! That being said, Scarred Souls is a romantic suspense that focuses on Vaughn and Hope and as the title suggests, they are both scarred souls and their stories will break your heart. This was an intensely emotional read but an enjoyable one as well. I don’t like to give too much away in my reviews – I like to impress upon other readers how the book made me feel and what emotions it elicited and this one gave me all the feels and all the emotions. I especially enjoyed the secondary characters as well but I always do when reading Ms. Weaver’s work – she interweaves their stories and the plot flows so easily. Because this is a duet, be prepared for a cliffhanger ending, but believe me, I think it will be more than worth it to wait for the ending of Vaughn and Hope’s story!

I love a good romantic suspense book, and this book delivered in spades! The MMC is growly, grumpy, scarred, and a lot unhinged. The FMC is feisty, sassy, stubborn and a little bit temperamental. Put these two together and they mix like oil and water, but they explode like fire and gasoline!

The storyline is well written, and this suspense is on point. The tension between the two main characters just jumps off the pages. Both of these characters have severe past trauma issues, but they may be exactly what the other needs to overcome them. One thing I really appreciate about this book is that it’s part of a duet and it doesn’t end on a gut clenching cliffhanger. The ending definitely leaves me excited to see what happens in book 2, without the lasting effects of cliff hanger hangover. Overall, I definitely recommend this book if you’re a fan of romantic suspense with a damaged hero and a slightly less damaged heroin.

I loved Shep in The Hit, swooned over Brandon in The Payback and would have gone to the end of the world with Kane in the Heist but Scarred Souls was just *chefs kiss*
I felt for Vaughn through every page and just wanted to hold him close and Hope I could sit with her for hours and marvel in how strong of a woman she is!

I have been obsessed with this series. The author is wonderful with developing these amazing characters. The plot is always great and the banter is so fun! I am so happy to be an ARC reader but sad I have to wait for part two! The banter and plot for Scarred Souls did not disappoint. If you’re wanting to start this then I suggest you just get the whole series. You’ll be sucked in and wanting more and won’t be able to put them down. I finished this book in less than 24 hours! Happy reading!

The fact the day has gone through so much and still fighting is amazing. This book has got to be my favourite this year and I cannot wait for book 2.
Julie Weaver writing is completely memorising, she’s got me in a chokehold.

I adored this book and can’t wait for the 2nd book. Both Hope and Vaughn were made for each other. You could feel the sizzle between them, what a hot pair! I loved the banter between them and how Hope had no fear of Vaughn.
This was a great introduction to the couple and really covered their fears and background well. I loved Sage and Vaughn’s calls I almost felt sorry for him!
This is building up to be an exciting read and I can wait to see what Vaughan wants Hope to do in book 2. Overall a brilliant read and my favourite book in the series so far.

October can’t get here soon enough so that I can finish this amazing story!
Vaughn and Hope are both equally distraught over their past traumas. While Hope has found ways to cope with hers, Vaughn hasn’t been able to do the same. But maybe all he really needs is the right feisty woman to bring him around.
This story is full of sass, possessive behavior, and sexual tension. I can’t wait to see where book two takes them!!

I inhaled this book….it had everything…. Broody alpha…independent leading lady….I just loved how these two characters were so perfectly matched and were able to see through each other’s stuff!! I cannot wait for book two!!

A gripping forced proximity, enemies-to-lovers with the perfect clash of personalities and a whole lot of heat. Vaughn is the ultimate protective grump with wounds that run deep, and Hope has a lot of spark and secrets that make her a fascinating character. Seeing them push each others' buttons while cautiously learn to trust each other was magic. And the plot is gearing up for an incredible part two! Can't wait.
