Am I fake dating my best friend? Hear me out…

So I'm throwing myself a breakup party, a glittery fete where I envision I'll lift a glass and celebrate being free and single again.

What I actually Drink too much champagne and blurt out to my best guy friend that I’d really like to get back on the horse.

But what I truly don’t expect is Carter’s answer – he volunteers as tribute.

With his sinful brown eyes and too-good-to-be-true body it’d be no hardship for me to say yes, though I certainly don’t want him to feel obligated to, um, service me, just because my failed, loveless marriage was a s-e-x desert.

But since the charming and confident pro football star owes five public dates to his dating app sponsor, we make a deal to help each other out.

Pretty soon, our public how to date lessons turn into, ahem, very private ones. And I’m a star student, graduating quickly from flirty banter and lingering looks to toe-curling, sheet-grabbing, mind-blowing hours of physical education.

The problem? Turns out learning to date again feels a lot like the real thing. Can our friendship withstand all these late-night bedroom sessions?

Especially since I’m suddenly longing for my best friend and there’s nothing fake about my feelings…

THIS BOOK WAS SO FREAKING CUTE AND SWOONY AND I LOVED IT!!!! Also, the narrators were perfection SO if you are an audiobook lover I highly recommend!!

What happens when you accidentally flash your best friend your boobs via FaceTime? Well you start fake dating of course 😇

Carter & Rachel have been the best of friends since high school. Both were left in the dust by their exes and are hesitant to get back in the game. But luckily they had each other to lean on during the rough times.

When the situation arises for the two to start a series of dates for a popular dating app, things start to really get heated. And they may or may not begin to see each other in a completely different light

Carter: cinnamon roll in the streets x freaky dirty talked in the sheets!!!!!! And he’s a pro footballer?! Pls HES perfect!! The mirror scene >>>

Rachel is so cute & we love a successful business owner queen!! And she deserves all the love, especially after all the awful shit her ex put her through. Carter may just be the perfect guy for the job!

Dnf %68

Reasons to dnf:
1. The sex scenes and "dirty talk" were so cringe.
2. There's no chemistry
3. They're supposed to be best friends, and what I liked about friends to lovers books is that the most important thing to them is to respect one another and their friendship and not ruin it. Here they jumped to the bed so fast

I was about to give it one last opportunity when they went golfing and he got pissy and offended that she told him he's too competitive. Like a little kid.

Rachel and Carter have been best friends for years but both have past relationships that haven’t gone so well.

Rachel is newly divorced and isn’t so sure about getting back into the dating game any time soon. Carter has a deal with his agent and a company that involves a popular dating app but he is wary about dating strangers through the app as well.

Carter tells Rachel about it and asks if she will help him with this deal and go on fake dates with him since they’re friends and are used to hanging out anyway.

As you can probably guess, one thing leads to the next and both end up feeling like things may not be so fake after all. 🤭

Not to compare, but I feel like if you enjoy Meghan Quinn and how she does both humor and spice, then you’ll likely love this series by Lauren Blakely as well!

I absolutely loved this book and can’t wait to read more books in this series! 📚

5 Star Review Plays Well With Others (How To Date #2) by Lauren Blakely

I could not wait to dive into Plays Well With Others, book two in the latest How To Date series from Lauren Blakely. I was invested in Carter Hendrix and Rachel Dumont’s story from the first chapter and was frustrated when real life got in the way.

I enjoy friends to lovers’ story and it was amusing to watch how their story unfolded. The banter and chemistry between them intense and it was entertaining to watch the push and pull dynamic of their relationship as they moved from friends to lovers.

This book is passionate, funny and romantic with wonderful characters who I adored.

This did not work at all for me. It should have been better. Rachel is back after a terrible divorce from a man who treated her horribly and left her with a lot of baggage. She decides to throw a party for herself as she heads into a newer, better version of her life. There to catch her as she falls into this new life is her bff Carter, a professional football player who has his own dramatic romantic history. One thing leads to another, and the two of them decide to help each other out [insert wink emoji] by creating a series of videos about how to date your best friend. Those date nights (the on camera part) were actually the best part of this book. Unfortunately, I think that Lauren Blakely chose to lean heavily into the physical chemistry between Rachel and Carter, and after five minutes this got boooooring. I wanted to feel more of the deep friendship and mental connection between these two people who had been burned by 'love' in the past and just needed to see what was right in front of their faces. It would have been lovely if it had taken more than five pages for these two to fall right into a level five physical relationship after being just friends for so long. But they just jump head first into shagarama-ville, and there is nowhere for this story to go. We basically get a gazillion moments of 'I don't want to ruin the friendship, and what if he/she doesn't feel the same' angst over and over and over again. Then there is the obligatory 'can I ever trust again' moments thrown in for good measure. I like Erin Mallon (but, here again, I think I've listened to WAY too many of her narrations lately) and Teddy Hamilton as narrators. But they cannot overcome a weak story. This one gets two stars from me. It was okay.

**Audio Review**
Give me all the Sunshine! Plays Well With Others by Lauren Blakely was a light, witty, and SPICY best friends to lovers romance that had me blushing quite a bit (Hello dirty talk!) and stole my heart completely from start to finish! (Swoon!) Rachel and Carter’s journey from fake dating to forever had me falling head over heels in love with this sweet and sexy couple!

Erin Mallon and Teddy Hamilton narrate this audiobook, and both were the perfect pairing to bring Rachel and Carter to life! Erin’s portrayal of Rachel’s somewhat brazen yet vulnerable persona was spot on, and so easy to fall in love with. Teddy conveyed Carter’s charismatic, loyal, and sinfully sexy personality perfectly as he fell first and hard for Rachel. Erin and Teddy will have you fanning yourself with Rachel and Carter’s fiery hot insta- chemistry from the very first boob flash!

Overall, I LOVED this book! If you are a fan of a best friends to lovers romance with a hot hunky pro football player, a free spirited jewelry shop owner looking for a fresh start, sparkly red dresses, dating apps, shower voyeurism, puzzles, fake dating, chocolate shop adventures, kitchen counter STEAM, girlfriend lessons, Halloween costume parties, and a HEA that proves best friends make the best lovers, then you will love Rachel and Carter’s story. I always look forward to more from Lauren Blakely.

If you liked the first book you should enjoy this one!

It’s a cute friends to lovers. I’m not a huge fan of the whole ‘dating coach’ type of thing but this was still pretty fun. Carter really is pretty great and I don’t know how Rachel was able to marry a different person while knowing him… but at least she figured it out in the end.
I’m pretty excited for Elodie’s book next!

REVIEW ON MY BLOG
https://www.emilythebooknerd.com/2023...

I am so blessed to be on Lauren Blakely's review team. I get access to all of her books prior to them coming out for honest reviews in exchange. Lauren is one of my favorite authors and there's nothing she has written that I will not read. I have loved every book by her that I have read so far. All of her books that I have read are just sooooo good. Plays Well With Others is no exception. I absolutely adored this book and her latest release!

I had such a good time reading this book. There were many times while reading this book that I was smiling or blushing while reading. This book has the best spicey scenes written to date by Lauren. I don't want to give anything away but the shower scene she wrote is one of the best I have ever read when it comes to steamy hot scenes.

I loved these main characters and the ADHD representation. This is an amazing friend to lover's book. Friends to lovers is one of my favorite book tropes and this one did not disappoint. I normally do not like sport romances but this one I enjoyed probably because there weren't as much sports in the actual book/story. This book had fake dating as well which left for an intriguing read that kept me entirely entertained.

This book was so hot and that spatula spanking scene had me on my toes and kept me all kinds of blushing. Lauren, you write amazing romances in all the best ways. The tension was nothing short of perfection. Carter is a new favorite book boyfriend you will absolutely love!

I had the bestest of best times reading this story! #truth I laughed from the moment I started reading, and no joke, did not stop till the end. Sometimes it was LOL and sometimes it was just smiling but I felt good the entire time! #readinggoals

Friends to more is one of my favorite tropes in romance because it comes with a built-in history between the two MCs. The author doesn’t have to take time on the page building a friendship as well as a romance which leaves more room in the story for the build of the romance and the more you build that aspect, the more likely the reader is to believe and root for the inevitable HEA. It’s also one of my favorite tropes to read by LB because she does it so well! She did not skimp on her talents with this story!

This was a fun-filled, low-angst, highly emotional in the best kind of way, carefree, sexy story everyone should take a few hours to enjoy!

This friends to lovers romance has a cute, quirky factor that made it a fun, feel good read.
Rachel and Carter are the kind of friends who finish each other’s sentences and share the same humor. They click like puzzle pieces.
I loved their banter, their sarcasm and their entertaining interactions so much.
There’s never a dull moment. Feelings start to change after an accidental FaceTime answer, attraction starts to become impossible to ignore. There are a few accidental incidents that bring things to a hot boiling point for both friends. It’s very entertaining and extremely hot.
When things turn to friends with benefits (with an end date) it gets really spicy hot. Their chemistry is scorching and their sexual experimentation’s are a naughty dream.
Carter is a sweet, cinnamon roll type, but in the bedroom, kitchen, living room…. He’s a take charge man with a deliciously filthy mouth.
Obviously feelings were bound to get involved, they are lifelong best friends all.
Both characters are really likable, their friendship is #goals. I loved them together. They are both slightly quirky and they appreciate it in each other.
It’s an extremely low drama, low angst romance that made me laugh, smile and feel like decent people are out there and sometimes they get their happily ever after.

This book is soo cute 🥰 I absolutely love a friends to lover book and this just hit all the right feels, and the spice!!! I was disappointed!

Carter is so manly, he’s athletic, he’s big he’s strong, he’s a kind, he’s romantic and did I mention he is Big (if you know what I mean 😉) he is a perfect gentlemen with a bit of a dirty mouth.

He is always the prefect guy for our girl Rachel, she’s out of a horrible relationship and who else than her best friend to help build up her trust again.

The story is good, it’s cute, the characters are well written although I feel in love more with the MMC than the FMC I’m not sure what and why but I wanted more from the FMC, I could put my finger on it and still can’t but it didn’t spoil the book for me!

Loved it would recommend!

This is Rachel and Carter's story, they have been best friends since forever. They've both been through heartbreak, but when Rachel expresses her desire to date again, Carter surprises her by offering to be her fake date. Can you believe it? Their chemistry is through the roof, and things quickly get steamy. What starts as a fake dating arrangement turns into some seriously hot moments. I mean, sparks are flying left and right! I adored their friendship turning into romance. Their banter is hilarious, and Carter is an absolute dreamboat—a pro football player with a heart of gold. Rachel is a total queen, building her own business after a terrible marriage. This book is funny, passionate, and incredibly romantic. It's a friends-to-lovers story that will make your heart melt. Trust me, you don't want to miss it! Grab a copy ASAP!

Prepare to be swept away by the breathtakingly beautiful tale of friendship evolving into an all-encompassing love in this remarkable audio book. The serendipity of their connection, whether by a twist of fate or a deliberate act, is tinged with an undeniable magic that will leave you captivated.

While initially questioning the necessity of their fabricated romance, born out of sponsor obligations, I soon realized that it was merely a veil for the profound emotions simmering beneath the surface. What began as a contractual arrangement soon blossomed into an authentic and deeply meaningful bond. Their journey of feigned affection gradually transformed into something genuine and heartfelt, drawing them closer with each passing moment.

The narrators poured their souls into their performances, skillfully evoking a kaleidoscope of emotions that enveloped my heart. Their voices became vessels through which the characters' joys, fears, and vulnerabilities were channeled, leaving an indelible imprint on my soul. With every word, they wove an intricate tapestry of sentiments that made the story come alive in the most mesmerizing way.

Through their impeccable delivery, the narrators breathed life into the characters, allowing their love to bloom with an authenticity that resonated deeply. Their chemistry, both on and off the pages, was palpable, and it lent an extra layer of richness to the narrative. It was as though the narrators themselves had experienced the tumultuous journey of the protagonists, infusing their performances with a raw and genuine passion.

Watching the protagonists embrace their second chance at love was a true privilege. Their hearts melded together in a dance of vulnerability, trust, and unwavering support. The walls they had built around themselves crumbled, giving way to a profound connection that defied all odds. The growth of their love was a delicate and intricate process, delicately woven with genuine moments of tenderness, laughter, and shared dreams.

This audio book is a rare gem that will leave an indelible mark on your soul, reminding you that love, in all its forms, has the power to heal, transform, and ignite the most profound connections imaginable. It is a testament to the resilience of the human heart and the beauty that can be found in unexpected places. Prepare to be enchanted, enthralled, and ultimately moved by this extraordinary tale of love's transformative power.

🎶 Before you, I'd only dated self indulgent takers. Who took all of their problem out on me. But you carry my groceries and now I'm always laughing. And I love you, because you have given me no choice but to 🎶

Rachel Dumont’s (h) fresh start backfires when she flashes her best friend, and now she is scared things will be awkward between them. Fortunately, she has time between her breakup party and interacting with him to ease the tension. The problem is that now she’s noticing him in a way she didn’t before and doesn’t know how to act around him. Carter Hendrix (H) needs a favor, requiring fake-dating Rachel to fulfill his sponsorship contract. Now, they can ease the tension together and see if what they have is real or because of moments they shared in the moment.

─── ・ 。゚☆: THOUGHTS*.☽ .*:☆゚. ───

“Boobs. Boobs. Boobs. Rachel’s boobs. My best friend’s boobs”

“Not that I want to forget the flashing. But I have to forget the flashing.”

It started off promising, but there needed to be more consistency in the relationship. They had no interest in each other before seeing each other less clothed; she accidentally flashed him and caught a glimpse of his chest. Suddenly, they're seeing each other in a different light. However, when Carter saw Rachel's ex-husband near the end, he claimed to have been interested for a while and should have stopped the wedding five years ago. However, he was with other women and never said he had feelings for Rachel, nor did it seem like it was something he considered before being flashed. Nothing would have sparked without these events, almost like a butterfly effect. If Rachel never flashes him, they don't get together. I barely believed they were best friends; it didn't feel natural at times with how they were around each other.

“I don’t think I’m afraid of being alone. But I found I really enjoyed monogamy,” he says, his voice as stripped bare as his admission of this character flaw. “I suppose my Achilles’ heel is I like dating one person. I like being with one person. I really like having a girlfriend.” He laughs lightly, a self-deprecating sound as he weaves in another strand of my hair. “And I love sex. On the reg.”

With Carter proclaiming that he prefers to be in a relationship, I wonder if this is what was happening here. I was bothered that he felt he needed to cancel his sponsorship meeting because he was letting Rachel down. She was visibly upset when he withdrew, which is understandable because of her history with her ex-husband, but she should have understood where Carter was coming from. He explained how his ADHD worked, and while forgetting for him was common, he tried his best to be there for her. There should have been a sympathetic lens from Rachel; Carter was putting his all to be the best boyfriend he could. However, it felt like he was trying so hard because of her previous experiences and felt the pressure of perfecting a relationship. Rachel wanted to be a good girlfriend, too, because she didn't quite understand the man or her ex-husband but showed acts of service around Carter.

“I know it sounds crazy, but I just want to know…” she stops and takes a steadying breath, “…how a man is supposed to treat a woman when they go out. So when I said, ‘girlfriend lessons,’ I was going to ask if you could take me on those four additional dates you owe Date Night, as friends, and just kind of show me how a man treats a woman.”

The concept of the fake dates for his contact was interesting. It's not something I've read about in the world of fake dating, and the execution of the dates was thoughtful. However, the dialogue between Carter and Rachel does not send out best friends who are in love energy. I didn't feel like they had known each other for ages. They knew small things about each other, but there were occasions when he felt like he couldn't tell Rachel what he thought about football because he feared being a lousy boyfriend. When it started to jeopardize the comfort of their friendship because of the relationship, I no longer loved it. Despite their fake dating, he should have felt like he could tell her anything. If he was having a bad day, he should be able to express that to a partner and a friend. Instead, he kept it in and felt like he had to shield a part of himself. I wouldn't say I liked the feeling of Carter minimizing his thoughts because he worried about Rachel's reaction. It tells me their friendship isn't as strong as they thought if he feared her reaction. I want to be transparent, but it's something to consider. I want the closeness and ease of a relationship between the MMC and FMC where they trust each other wholeheartedly and feel free of burdens around each other; this needs to be improved.

🎶 You took the time to memorize me. My fears, my hopes and dreams. I just like hanging out with you. All the time 🎶

“I’ve been falling for you since we first met in high school. I’ve been falling a little harder every day, but I didn’t know it till our first date at the chocolate shop. But once I knew, let me tell you, I knew. I don’t want to be just your friend anymore. I came down here to ask you if you’ll go out with me on a real date.”

The pacing was off to me. She came to town for a new start, and while she was ready to start dating, the timeline of falling in love with Carter felt quick. I understand that she's known him for years, but they've never explored their feelings, and it's hard to believe that they adjusted to the concept of dating so quickly when it was foreign to them. Not to be harsh, but who made Carter the expert on how to treat women when he had a poor record of pleasing them? He knew what he was doing and expressed interest in making an effort, but it didn't feel natural at times. The book itself was long, and still, little happened. I didn't connect to Rachel and Carter and wasn't rooting for their relationship. I was expecting to love this as a best friends-to-lovers book, but I was not intrigued by the friendship, and it's because they weren't in each other's life for some time, so the closeness of the friendship was not there.

¸♡ OVERALL ♡¸.•

The book could have been better with past chapters of their friendship because I didn’t believe they were best friends. It felt awkward between them at various times, and they lacked comfort around each other. It was a decent read, but it didn’t particularly meet the marks for my favorite reads.

Rachel is back in San Francisco putting her life back together after her marriage ended in betrayal. She doesn’t trust and is hesitant to start dating again.

Carter missed his chance with Rachel when they were in college. He hasn’t had much luck in his own dating life, and finds himself in a contract to film dates without a girlfriend to take on those dates.

What started as a way for Rachel to get used to dating again and Carter to fulfill his contract turned into real feelings that both tried to hide. The dates were clever, creative, and complemented both Carter and Rachel’s interests. There was plenty of humor and hilarious situations that the characters find themselves in.

These two had a great base friendship that made for fun reading. At the base of each date and interaction was their solid friendship, which also made them each question the depth of their feelings quickly.

This was a fun, sweet, sexy read. I loved the last quarter or so of this story especially. I loved the ways they worked through the challenges they were facing as well as their relationship challenges.

Trope: Best Friends to Lovers
HEA: Yes
Steam Level: 4/4

Trigger Warnings: Cheating (not w/ H&h), Alcohol, Anxiety

Carter & Rachel
Blakley mentions that Carter is one of her favorite Hero's she's written. I can 100% see why. My goodness! 🔥🥵. Blakely does not fail with the steamy scenes. And I'm here for it!
Carter was a fantastic hero, very dreamy but also very realistic. He has ADHD, and I think she did a fantastic job at conveying the daily struggle. It isn't something that is made up, and it's more than just losing focus or talking a lot. She mentions she did a tremendous amount of research as well. Which I respect.
Poor Rachel. She really got the short stick when it comes to husbands. I'm glad Carter helped her see what it's like to be with a real man, that loves his woman.
Another fantastic read from Blakely. Full of laughs (always check your caller ID), swoons and steamy moments.

...when he looks at you like that, he may be up to something...

Yay! I'm so happy this book was good! lol Lately I struggle with the author's books. The recent releases haven't always worked for me as well as some of her older novels. However, this one seemed like it was written by the Lauren Blakely I enjoy!

Here we have best friends Carter and Rachel. Rachel is divorced from a cheating a-hole and Carter has ended a relationship with his piece of work fiance. Needless to say, they both are struggling with relationships, but still believe love is attainable. Carter, a football player, has a partnership with a dating app and he encourages Rachel to help him go on dates and video them for the audience. Through this experience, they begin to see their relationship differently and become more than friends.

I loved both Carter and Rachel as characters. I enjoyed their friendship and how they changed their dynamic from friends to lovers to deep commitment to each other. This book was fun and light-hearted, but also tackled some tough topics like infidelity. Also, the sexy times in this book were very well-done and were presented in a way that allowed a reader to truly feel that connection that the two characters were having.

This was classic from this author and I'm so very happy that this book worked for me. I'm hoping the next books are just as good! Keep more like this one coming!

Friends to lovers romance? Yes please!!

Absolutely loved Carter and Rachel! The chemistry was off the charts and the banter was on fire.

The friendship these two have is goal worthy, but when opportunity knocks they realize feelings run deeper than they realize.
Loved how Carter is a sweet and thoughtful guy everyone loves and behind closed doors the bossy dirty mouth guy comes out.
Rachel is building her business and decides it’s time to date again. Carter talks her into “fake dating”.

Plays Well With Other’s is the perfect beach read! Loved it!
