While Emily Taylor deals with the dysfunctional Sanderson family at school, seemingly unconnected characters play out their own troubled journeys into the past.
Doro searches for her lost childhood. Alain Reneaux delves into the reasons behind his violent nightmares. The town's new lawyer, Jacob Finch, suffers from guilt about the heartbreaking death of his wife. And two lonely little girls suffer neglect and tragedy.
As Emily untangles the complexities of the Sanderson children’s lives, the collision of past into future causes an inferno of insanity and death, which ultimately proves how essential family and friendship are to happiness and endurance.

Catherine's books are gritty, yet portray gorgeous surroundings; they deal with sensitive social issues, but always include love and hope. They're not thrillers, but rather literary mysteries with loads of character and setting. And justice always prevails.
Legacy is a complex tale of tragedy and love that shows how past events can influence future ones. Catherine Astolfo tells the story eloquently as she interlinks the lives of ordinary people who have experienced extraordinary events, only to discover they have a lot more in common than they knew. The characters are so interesting and realistic that I could easily see and hear them. The settings are equally rich and detailed and created vivid pictures in my mind. Intrinsic to any good mystery, the pace of the story steadily increases and reaches a suspenseful and satisfying conclusion. This book is definitely one to add to your to-read list. Looking forward to the next installment in the series!
FIVE STARS This was an intriguing/tragic novel that was eloquently told through the eyes of four main people whose lives ultimately intertwine and connect through an incident from the past. I was enchanted and haunted by the setting, so vivid and rich. The descriptive narration produced deep feeling characters who were easy to relate to in their strength and weaknesses--their determination to discover and accept the past was inspiring. As the mystery unfolds, I found it hard to stop reading as I became emotionally invested in their lives and where they might end up. I will be looking forward to the next book and will read other works from this author.
Legacy is the kind of book I love to read. Several individuals are introduced to us at the beginning of the novel whose lives intersect apparently randomly. But the plot weaves a strange tale of past horrors that have caught up to the present. Both heart warming and haunting, Astolfo's book is a notable entry in the mystery field.
2.75 stars. Legacy by Catherine Astolfo was very disappointing. It is book 3 in a mystery series I had been really enjoying until now. It started off with a whole series of chapters from different viewpoints, many from completely new characters - far too many - I couldn't keep them straight and found it very annoying, even when the strands started coming together. I usually like that kind of winding together of different story lines, but I think there were just too many here. I also didn't like the main character's voice as much as in the prior books - it had an almost nostalgic tone, in keeping I guess with having moved forward many years from book 2 to a point just before her retirement, but the prior tone was more vibrant and interesting. But the mystery was pretty good, so I knocked my rating back up by a bit.
This book kept me up past my bedtime. Legacy has a host of characters that keep you on the edge of your seat. The excitement builds as we jump from one character’s perspective to another. The mystery unfolds slowly in the lives of seemingly ordinary people, but the plot never gets dull because the characters are so interesting and well developed. The author incites your sympathy while challenging your mind to unravel the mystery. Most importantly, the outcome isn’t predictable, but is quite satisfying.
Scary story emerges as the tale unfolds, the mysteries unfold. Love and fear intertwine in a small town that unknowingly has an overzealous church in their midst.
