Beth Farrar has been writing stories since her parents handed her a library card with which she always took out the allowed five books per week. From that moment on, her imagination was sparked. Encouragement from English teachers set her on a serious path of learning the craft.
From TV scripts to full length movies (none of which came to screen but were for pleasure and practice), she developed her writing skills by exploring various mediums. Filling notebooks with ideas, sketching characters and locations, and inventing sticky situations for the heroes and heroines to survive, is Beth's happy place (besides walking in cemeteries, but that's another story).
For fifteen years Beth wrote a monthly column, Living Country, in her local English language newspaper, Main Street, sharing interesting observations of living and raising her three sons in the country with her husband.
Having always loved genealogy, Beth melded two of her passions together and created the Ellie McLellan Genealogy Mystery series.
Beth's three sons now live in Montreal but she and her husband still live in their log cabin on a lake north of Montreal. They love the quiet and the bird song (sometimes way too early in the morning!). They’re not particularly fond of power outages in the deep winter months, the shoveling, or the mosquitoes in summer. But the rest = priceless!

And being a Canadian author, please forgive the extra "l"s and wayward "u"s you may find in my work. Please don't report them, it's just the way we spell words here in the great north, eh!
This book starts with Quinn and Ellie flying to Scotland to meet his family. Then on to meet Ellie's family threw her cousin Kay . Kay brings the family together to met Ellie. Over all this was a nice book about finding family . Making connections with people you most likely never would have met. Not so much about genealogy. But a nice Crozy Book.
I love how Beth Farrar has made these characters come alive. I feel like I know them. I would love being apart of Heritage i really have learned a-lot about searching my own family tree and writing my story from reading this series. Thank you Beth
I have just finished reading, non-stop, the first seven books of the “Ellie McLellan Genealogy Mystery series, written by Beth Farrar. I look forward to reading the remaining 3 books in this series, pausing only to write this review. These stories combine two of my reading preferences – the first being mysteries that include recurring appearances of the main characters throughout the series. My second preference has to do with my interest in genealogy. I have worked at my own family genealogy for some 35+ years and found many of the genealogy tips and hints included in the stories interesting and useful. Ms. Farrar has a writing style that keeps your interest, and at the end of each story leaves you looking forward to the next. She has been added to my list of favorite (and “must read”) authors.
This series has grown on me since the first book and I can not imagine not being engaged with these special characters, ever again! This book however, with its focus on Ellie for once, was the cherry on the sundae.
FAMILY TIES by Beth Farrar is a beautifully woven tale of discovery, connection, and mystery that captured my heart from the very first page. Ellie McLellan’s journey to Scotland is not just a physical trip but an emotional and transformative adventure that will resonate deeply with readers.
The genealogy theme added a fascinating layer, bringing family history and personal stories to life in such a compelling way. The cozy family reunion and the warmth of newfound relatives were beautifully contrasted with the twists and revelations that kept me eagerly turning the pages.
Beth Farrar has a remarkable talent for crafting vivid settings, relatable characters, and heartfelt moments. Ellie’s courage and vulnerability, paired with a captivating family mystery, make this book an absolute gem.
If you love stories about family, self-discovery, and unraveling the past, FAMILY TIES is a must-read. I can’t wait to see what Beth Farrar writes next!
Love the descriptions of places overseas; castles, cemeteries, gardens, family reunion, etc. Read all of it today! Love the continued storyline with many extra characters!
This one was fantastic. I loved meeting Quinn's Family and Gillian, while I missed Ellie's mature friends it was so fun to meet new people and the little mysteries she helped solve.
Ellie and Quinn go to Scotland to meet Quinn's family and to England to see where her mother grew up and to meet some of her mother's family and to help solve some family mysteries.
