In the vibrant streets of London, Charlie is struggling to make ends meet. To afford his mother’s care facility, he’s taken on a risky side job that forces him to sell his body. Life is tough, but Charlie remains resilient, finding solace in the camaraderie of his four best friends.
When a chance encounter brings him face-to-face with Sebastian, a wealthy businessman from New York fifteen years his senior, their connection ignites a passion that neither can ignore. After a perfect night together, they are drawn back into each other’s lives, their chemistry undeniable.
But as they navigate their growing feelings, Charlie’s desire for independence clashes with Sebastian’s longing for someone to nurture and care for. Just as they begin to explore their connection, Charlie’s life implodes, and Sebastian's past trauma resurfaces, threatening to tear them apart.
Can they find a way to overcome the dangers from their pasts and embrace the love that’s blossoming between them, or will their tumultuous histories destroy their chance at happiness? Perfect Night is a gripping tale of love, desire, and the high stakes of opening your heart.
For a debut this was great; the vibes reminded me of Lily Morton. The last part was a bit messy with all the things going on and I was almost a bit overwhelmed in the end I enjoyed this one a lot.
♡ age-gap ♡ rich CEO vs struggling ♡ caring vs stubbornly independend ♡ found family ♡ spicy and emotional ♡ all the drama
Fabulous start to the series. Please heed TWs, tho as this series touches a few heavier topics despite it being tender and romantic.
********** Soho Knights Series
Book 1 - Perfect Night - 4.0 stars Book 2 - Dangerous Attraction Book 3 - Stolen Dream Book 4 - Convenient Rivals Book 5 - Broken Promises - 3.5 stars
I'm not reading this series in order, but I don't care because every single book is wonderful. The MCs in this book are Charlie and Sebastian and let me tell you, they were so hot together. They met at a bar and had an amazing one time hook-up, they had the perfect night together (as the title says) and Sebastian fell hard and fast almost instantly. Charlie was also smitten by the older guy but he thought he couldn't have anything with him due to his personal and economic situation. I really enjoyed their love story. Charlie was struggling with money, he had a crappy job at a marketing company and he was used and undervalued by his shitty boss. Since he didn't get paid what he was worth he had to do a side hustle in the way of sex work. That was one of the things Charlie thought that would put Sebastian off once he found out. Sebastian fell in love with Charlie after that one night. He was older than Charlie and that was one of the things he thought the younger guy wouldn't like. He had also suffered in the past at the hands of a young boyfriend who just wanted him for his money. The story was very romantic because despite their reservations about engaging in a relationship, they just couldn't forget about each other. I liked that Charlie just didn't accept Sebastian's money, he valued his independence too much and just wanted to stand on his own. He was a sweet guy and Sebastian just wanted to give him the world. I loved the writing style, this author is great at creating relationships, not only romantic ones but also friendships. It was touching to read about a group of guys that just became each other's brothers because they chose to. There were some emotional moments, a love so strong that couldn't be ignored and some hateful secondary characters. This book had everything I like in a book and I loved it very much.
This is a story that is very enthusiastically written. it had so many points of interest. like a pot with many many ingredients. They could have been less and it would still be good because the writing was good. I enjoyed this, my first book by this author.
Dnf Sorry, but I couldn't get over the writing style. You don't need to be Shakespeare, but the only thing this book consists of is descriptions like „they kissed. It was hot. Then the kissed ended. His ass was muscular. It felt good“ Like??? Where's the passion, the detail, the showing not telling, the emotions, the varied sentence structure?!
Also, I cannot take a book seriously that unirocally contains the line „he was the twinkiest of twinks“.
Maybe the plot is fantastic but I guess I‘ll never know.
~This was my first read by Oliver Takely & I just didn't connect with it. I thought the story had potential but I couldn't connect to the writing style which made me unable to connect with the characters. I also felt like the story bounced around too much to keep track of what was going on which made it hard to want to pay attention.
I did enjoy the duet narration by Devon & Dan and that helped in my decision to finish the book to the end.
This was a ok book for me. I love the rich poor aspect but beyond that, it felt lacking in a way. The I love yous came way to early. Didn’t really feel it. Also it’s a me thing so if you are down with it don’t let it knock anything from this but I’m not a fan of my smexy working MCs still working while actively smexying with other MC. Especially when it’s not being forced (ie there are many people who want to help) and there were no discussions about protection. Like a said it’s a me thing. I think my real well poo for this book was the sister. It seemed totally out of character for her reaction, on top of the turnabout a few mins later and all was forgiven. I like my Mc’s to be a lot more protective for the ones they say they love even up against blood fam.
For future me: Dual POV Mc does continue smexy with clients while with other MC Diversity is ehh
Two souls thought to be broken found love in each other. I read Hunter and Deacon's story first and wondered about this particular couple. Sebastian and Charlie are a great couple, though they both struggle to see their worth. They both have great support systems, though Bex is actually the worst. Charlie has an amazing found family and I can't wait to read more about his "brothers" and their lives outside of each other. Sebastian also has true friends who have their own dark past and in need of love.
Charlie is a rising star being stifled by his horrible boss who continues to steal his work for major clients. After a very frustrating day, he decides to go out and runs into the older and very handsome Sebastian who is in London for work. This seems like a perfect match on paper. Both men are not looking for a relationship and they have other things to focus on but it's the weekend so time to let loose before it is Monday again. They head back to Sebastian's hotel room and the chemistry is explosive. Despite all his reservations Charlie gives his most open self to Sebastian after he witnesses his care and compassion first hand. But Charlie is only allowed one night, this successful older man couldn't want more than that, right?
Sebastian is sprung. He's been burned before but Charlie called to his very soul. Their bedroom connection is spot on but Charlie is funny and smart and he wants to learn more but no chance with no exchange of information. Trying to hedge his bet on, he goes back to where they met and runs into Charlie's friend from last night, and puts the ball in his court.
Things begin to fall into place as Sebastian's company is getting Charlie's and specifically Charlie's social media plan. His bus is forced to include him and Sebastian is there and things are magnetic. Sebastian takes a chance and Charlie is willing to meet him halfway. This is also when we realize how protective Bex can be and while sweet it borders on crazy.
Sebastian and Charlie continue to work toward building a true relationship but some bumps and literal bruises along the way. They work hard to communicate regarding their past and their hopes for the future.
I very much enjoyed this author and this series so far.
This was such a super sweet little mm romance. It’s always hit or miss for me when it comes to insta-love romances and I can usually tell within the first few chapters if I’m gonna like it or not. But I really fell in love with Charlie right from the start. Charlie’s just the sweetest guy trying to do whatever he can to support himself and his mother, even if that means putting up with a horrible boss. Right from the start though you can tell how much his friends truly care for him. Really Charlie and Sebastian’s story kinda remind me of Pretty Woman, if Julia Roberts was a guy.
Sebastian has sworn off relationships after one went really wrong, but he still enjoys a night of fun to let off steam. While in London for work he happens to run into Charlie, they hit it off right from the start and both give into the temptation of each other and together they have one perfect night. Charlie is more open with Sebastian than he’s ever been with anyone. He only has one night so why not be his authentic self, and someone like Sebastian couldn’t want anything more from him anyway. Sebastian is a CEO, how could he ever accept Charlie, a poor boy who has a less than savoury side job. However it would seem one night wasn’t enough for either of them.
Both Charlie and Sebastian are dealing with emotional damage, they’re stubborn, but also very smart when it comes to their jobs. I’m new to both narrators Devon Ryder & Dan Calley and think they did a great job. They were perfectly cast for Charlie and Sebastian brining these characters to life. This was actually my first m/m romance written by a man. I’ve always read m/m written by woman but I’m super glad I opened up my horizon and ventured out. I’ll definitely be reading/listening to more from Oliver.
In the heart of bustling London, Charlie juggles the demands of his marketing career, the financial burden of his mother's care, and the secret life he leads to make ends meet. His world is a precarious balance of resilience and vulnerability, driven by love and necessity. When Jason, his trusted confidant, encourages him to take a break, Charlie doesn’t expect to meet someone like Sebastian. The successful businessman from New York is everything Charlie isn’t, financially secure, confident, and seemingly unburdened by the world's weight. Their one perfect night together is a revelation, sparking a connection that challenges both men to confront their fears and desires. As they move between the vibrant energy of London and the dynamic pulse of New York City, they must navigate the complexities of their pasts and the realities of their present. For Charlie and Sebastian, the journey to a happily-ever-after is fraught with personal battles and emotional hurdles. Yet, through their struggles, they discover that love, though imperfect, can be the most powerful force of all, capable of healing wounds and bridging the chasm between their worlds. The audio production of Perfect Night is a testament to the exceptional talents of Devon Ryder and Dan Calley. Ryder’s portrayal of Charlie is marked by depth and nuance, making the character both compelling and relatable to listeners. His ability to infuse subtle emotions into Charlie’s voice adds a layer of realism that draws the audience in. On the other hand, Calley’s performance as Sebastian is nothing short of captivating. He effortlessly embodies Sebastian's brooding charisma and alpha dominance, adding warmth and charm that elevate the story. Together, these voice actors weave a rich tapestry of sound and emotion, breathing vibrant life into the audiobook and ensuring an immersive experience for listeners.
Perfect Night (Soho Knights 1) By Oliver Takely Published by the author 2024 Five stars
A straightforward m/m romance, presented by a gay author as representing the lives of gay men. I found that rather touching. So many m/m novels are women’s fantasies about us, and yet I have always, personally felt that same sort of connection with this literary genre.
Takely is a nice writer, presenting his characters strongly, but somehow avoiding some of the irritating tropes that crop up in romances. Sebastian Steele and Charlie Davidson are very different people—a young billionaire CEO of a company created by him and his twin sister, versus a low-level corporate worker from a London council house struggling to achieve a modest dream. They both have emotional damage (the theme of domestic abuse is central), and they’re both stubborn. But they’re not idiots, and they think. They don’t allow their gut instincts to ruin things needlessly. One of the nicest aspects of the story’s unfolding is that the two men gradually balance out, their differences becoming less important than their similarities.
Takely also surrounds his main characters with interesting people who love them. Sebastian has his sister, Rebecca; and Charlie has his four “brothers,” his found family from university days. These are so important in the development of the plot.
This is also a classic m/m story in that there’s a lot of sex in it—not always what my heart looks for these days. But Takely handles this rather joyously—a sign that neither man has been so damaged that he cannot embrace that part of him that is essential to who he is.
It’s a wonderful story, and prepares us for the coming books in the series with high anticipation.
This book is the first in a series set in London by debut author Oliver Takely.
Charlie is a young professional in marketing who is really good at what he does, but woefully underappreciated, undervalued, and definitely underpaid by his boss. He grew up poor as the son of a single mum who is now in the later stages of MS and requires assisted living in order to preserve a modicum of independence, which Charlie wants for her to have. In order to keep her there, Charlie has to do s*x work as a side hustle, a secret her keeps from pretty much everyone but one of his friends (Jason). After an especially rough day at work, Jason talks Charlie into going for a night of dancing and drinks. It is here that he makes a life changing encounter when he bumps into Sebastian, an older, successful businessman from the States. As the title says, they have one perfect night together, but will that be it? They take a number of bumpy paths - both in London and in NYC - on their way to an HEA and it is a process! Both MCs have their fair share of trauma and issues that they must overcome in order to make it together.
I'd say this is a medium angst story filled with a wonderful found family, some mean/awful side characters, a couple of broken boys who help make each other whole, and some good smut. I'd probably like to see a bit more in terms of "showing" rather than telling, but the writing itself is solid overall. I look forward to reading about how some of the other members of the found family get their HEAs. I definitely continue reading this series.
Thanks to GRR for this ARC - I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Charlie works for a jerk and hates it, but to keep his mother in a facility he needed it. But the legitimate job wasn’t his only way of making money, he had a side hustle that brought in the rest. On one of his off days his friend convinced him to go out where he ran into Sebastian—literally. There was some spark between them immediately.
Sebastian was recovering from a bad relationship that left him damaged. His friends and sister felt like it was time for him to find someone at least to have a good time and get a little relief. With that encouragement he went out where Charlie ran into him.
The spent an amazing night together and Sebastian wanted more, there was a spark he wanted to explore. The universe seemed to want them together but even with that there is a lot that needs to be figured out before they can find a happily ever after.
OPINION: This book was a great read, giving you a great feel for the MCs and who they are. The age gap isn’t addressed as much as the financial differences, but you are aware that it is there. They get together fairly early in the story, and we navigate through the ups and downs of their relationship, including telling some secrets and making peace with demons. There is an amazing friend group that I hope to learn more about. There is some depth to the story and we go through all of it with them. I enjoyed the book very much and recommend it.
This was my first book by Oliver Takely, but it won’t be the last 😃
Charlie is having a rough go of it. Work isn’t going well and his mom’s in an expensive care facility. And he’s also got a fair bit of pride that makes it nearly impossible for him to ask for or even to accept help. On top of all of that he’s got an abusive boss trying to kill his self-esteem.
Sebastian is a lonely billionaire CEO in London for work. He’s got a strong desire to find someone to care for. But he’s had two bad relationships that make him wary about starting another.
When these two meet, they have a strong attraction. Over the course of a long night they make a quick and deep connection. But Sebastian is leaving for New York and Charlie feels like they are too different anyway, so there’s no point hoping for more than one Perfect Night.
But then they meet again, and between not being able to deny their attraction and connection and having conflicting needs (Charlie needs to be independent and Sebastian needs to take care of someone), they struggle to find a way to be together. And then there are the people in their lives who complicate things.
I thought this was really well done because the romance might be fast, and they might have a lot of issues, but it still feels real and compelling. The dialogue is well done, character growth is grounded, the ally characters are vibrant and complex making me interested in their stories, and Charlie and Sebastian are both characters I loved and wanted to see happy.
So not a fan of the writing style. I know we're still in the intro but the first 10% just read like an extended expo dump where the author just told us their whole spiel.
Instead of telling us that Charlie was having trouble paying for his mom's care, why not have him take the phone call and show the problem via conversation? Instead of telling us that one of Charlie's johns was an asshole, why not show us a scene of it?
And not everything needs to be immediately laid out of it wasn't going to be relevant soon. Who the heck cares about all of Charlie's friends and how they met? Going into each and everyone of their backstories instead of just giving a summary or even a small hint for later was just awkward. Similarly, reading about Sebastian's history with his ex, Henry, was also boring amd unnecessary. Could've come out at some moment of weakness or in a conversation with Charlie or whatever.
Also didn't like how often the author used "twink" and "bear" to refer to people. In addition to the fact that "twink" was used in semi-dismissive contexts, only referring to people by their body types just made the characters feel judgy and less likable. One or twice, sure. Everytime though? Blegh.
Oliver Takely is a new to me Author, and this is his first book.
Honestly, I thought it was a solid read. The story flowed well, the character development was strong, and I enjoyed the descriptive writing style. I would definitely seek out more from this author.
Sebastian and Charlie are an interesting couple. They both have fairly heavy issues they are trying to deal with. There is some past trauma in there. As their relationship develops, they are not always on the same page, there’s some push back from Charlie. Ultimately, they find a way to make things work and in settles in nicely.
There are some great side characters, including some very well written villains, I felt the hate towards them deeply.
On the whole, this was an easy, enjoyable read with some twists and turns. I will be looking forward to more from the ‘Soho Knights’ series.
Read if you enjoy Age gap Insta love Found Family
Possible TWs Domestic Abuse of MC (discussed, not shown) Acts of violence (not between MCs) Financial hardship S work to afford care
Way too sexy! Charlie is in a position in which he's overqualified, underappreciated and underpaid. He needs the job to pay the bills for his Mother's care. He has a side hustle of which he's ashamed which supplements paying his Mom's expenses. He meets Sebastian and has the best night of his life. His low esteem makes him think he's undeserving of a relationship with Seb. Sebastian, carries the weight of a traumatic past while still longing not to be single and to belong to his person. Charlie, carries his baggage while stoically not taking charity and maintaining his independence. Watching these two, brought out all my feelings to help, advise, push and pull while laughing at the dance these two do around each other. Charlie's "brothers" are amazing fun and funny and Charlie and Seb's awkward tip toe dance is hilariously sad. Good story, excellent found family. Good supporting characters. Great cover art! You can't help rooting for everyone and hope everyone get what they deserve. Well done! I received an ARC and am voluntarily leaving a review.
First in series (Soho Knights). Billionaire. Age gap. One night stand. Found family. Dual POV.
Visiting CEO Sebastian doesn’t plan on having a one night stand in London, and certainly doesn’t expect the connection he has with Charlie. When their paths cross again Sebastian wants to pursue something but Charlie has a lot of reservations given his job, side hustle, and poor finances.
This was an entertaining start for a series that right away gives depth to the main characters as well as their surrounding family and friends. Charlie is admirable for his independence, loyalty to friends, and unwillingness to compromise. Both men have difficult pasts which made me anxious for them to finally get to the point where they are fully committed to be with each other given their quick feelings for each other. I enjoyed this story, and even though the obstacles they faced were angsty, whenever Charlie and Sebastian were together I rooted for their HEA. Looking forward to the rest of Charlie’s friends to find their HEA’s.
This book has a lot of promise, but the execution needs more work—starting with a healthy dose of showing rather than telling. (Both are needed in any novel, but the balance has to be right.) Lines like "He found dancing to be freeing as it took him out of his head" and "Charlie was in trouble as he was already feeling a lot of things for Sebastian and everything he did just increased the intensity of his emotions" are just plain... flat. Combine that with unlikely behavior/characterization and far too many plot conveniences, and this felt like a rough draft. This author clearly has potential, but (in my opinion) this book isn't ready for publication.
Oh, and this is minor, but it made me laugh: A US attorney is never going to say a person accused of a crime has "form." They may have "priors" or "a history of violence" or even "a rap sheet," but "form" doesn't work in that context on this side of the Atlantic.
My thanks to Gay Romance Reviews for an advance copy of this book.
Sharing stick, gay Moses, come whore, Jason's bitch-slap!
Steamy! Very steamy! Despite the 15 years difference in ages, Charlie and Sebastian go at it like rabbits -- often!
Oliver Takely's first MM romance book smashes it! Charlie and Sebastian are a lovely and darling couple. They are the MCs featured in Mr. Takely's Book 1 of the "Soho Knights" series. It promises to be an awesome series.
Charlie's roommates all grew up in difficult situations, too. The five of them met and have been roommates since uni. They each have their unique quirks, but the spitfire and quirkiest of the bunch is Jason. Hilarious! But all are loveable and fiercely loyal.
The storyline is enchanting, clever, and well sussed out. It's easy to read this marvelous book in a day. The imagery and scenery are grandly illustrated.
It's immensely enjoyable and satisfying. I can't wait for the next book! An easy recommendation!
This book was excellent overall, but had a few flaws. First of all, the lovescenes were 🔥🔥🔥! I love it when a book starts with a hot scene, because I am then really rooting for the MCs to get together so I can experience it again! Some of the writing is a little strange. For example-- Bex, Sebastian's sister, is hateful to Charlie right away, assuming he's a gold digger, without even meeting him. She then does an about face almost as quickly. Then, there are just some interesting sentences, but they don't really get in the way if my enjoyment of the story. It may just be that the author is British? Overall, this book reads like a movie which I truly enjoy. The ups and downs of the characters really lend themselves to a food series, one that I look forward to reading more about. Those is a standalone, and I am sure the rest will be as well. This is also the author's first M/M romance, which is surprising, since the story was so entertaining.
Younger Charlie is fiercely independent, working two jobs to pay for his beloved mother's care. Older Sebastian is obscenely rich and completely head over heels for Charlie. A lot of metaphorical head-butting over money ensues. I loved their meeting and how taken with each other they were from the beginning. They didn't make it easy for themselves and they weren't helped by other people causing real trouble too, but they made it to their HEA in a satisfying epilogue. My favourite thing about the book was the friend group. Charlie and his four university friends were so good together and all their interactions felt very real. There was real warmth and love between them all, and their shared home was brilliant. It was obvious they all had pasts that weren't great but no secrets were spilled here. They'll all be getting their own books, I assume, and I'm really looking forward to finding out about them and the men who deserve them.
I totally loved this book from a new MM author. I engaged with the main characters from the beginning, enjoying how they met and their chemistry together, investing in the trials their relationship went through as they tried to make their two different worlds combine. The secondary characters, Charlie’s “brothers” and Sebastian’s sister and good friends, added so much to the story, and you could just feel the love and support they had for each other, which bled over into care and support for the other’s friends, too. They got their happy ending, along with some satisfying “payback” for some deserving people along the way. A very enjoyable read from an author I will definitely watch for in the future. Looking forward to Langdon’s book next, then hopefully one for Jason, Gregory and Paolo down the line.
I received an advance copy of this book and this is my voluntary review.
A debut novel by Oliver Takely is a solid start. I enjoyed the premise. Opposites attract, age gap, wealth disparity romance between Sebastian and Charlie.
After a night of passion, their lives are destined to collide, which is perfect because they can’t seem forget about each other.
It’s not an easy-going romance. They both have some serious issues that they need to work through to make it to a happy ending. It gives it a bit of a gritty feel.
It was a little slow, for me, at times, but all in all I enjoyed the writing and the character development and will definitely check out book two.
I just finished reading the first book by Oliver Takely, and it was amazing—deserves a 5-star rating. I read his second book, "Dangerous Attraction," first, and it was so good that I had to go back and read the first one, titled "Perfect Night."
Oliver, your writing is fantastic! Your stories have everything I love, so please keep them coming. The relationship between Charlie and Sebastian is beautifully portrayed, and even with a 15-year age difference, their chemistry is electric!
The plot is smart and engaging, and I could easily picture everything as I read. Charlie’s flatmates each have their own interesting stories, and I’m excited to learn more about them. There’s a great mix of humour, a sense of family among friends, passion, and strong character development. This series is shaping up to be something special!
In his debut MM book Oliver Takely gives us a great glimpse of London while taking us through the journey that poor, younger Charlie and rich older Sebastian go through together. I love when an author writes in this atmospheric type of thing that makes the story seem so much more real and Takely manages to do it without making the rookie mistake of adding in every interesting thing they can think of or found while doing research. The main focus is on the two main characters, but there is a marvelous group of found family that Charlie lives with and I’m hopeful that they will be the focus of future volumes. I enjoyed this book and look forward to reading more in this series.
I loved Charlie and Sebastian. Charlie is working on the side to get money to pay for his mother's assisted living and the author definitely hit on an excellent and very realistic source of financial pressure there. One night Sebastian and Charlie meet but that one night turns out not to be enough for either of them. Turns out that a sizzling connection and the desire for a relationship isn't all it takes, however. These two have to overcome a power/financial disparity and the strains that can bring, bad relationship experiences in the past, a desire for independence versus the desire to protect which must walk a fine line to not become controlling. Initially these two lack the communication skills to navigate all these obstacles but they aren't willing to give up.
DNF (for now) 38%. As written, Charlie’s utter lack of self worth is incredibly annoying. I’ve read other books where similar levels of self doubt worked. But not here. That is on top of sentences like “Unlike most fickle gays, they hadn’t lost interest.” ???? What the ever loving 🤬. I keep trying to think of a way that sentence even makes sense. It’s not working. The context is consistently having brunch on Sundays. Are they saying most gays are fickle? Most gays are fickle about brunch? These gays are fickle in general, but they're not fickle about brunch? Gays are fickle about brunch but heteros are not fickle (about brunch or at all)? My brain hurts.
This book has a lot of positive reviews, so maybe I’ll try it again someday.
Story - ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ Spice - 🌶🌶🌶 Narration - ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Perfect Night is book #1 in the Soho Knights series. This is my first listen from the author and I thoroughly enjoyed Charlie and Sebastian's story. Sebastian is a uber-wealthy CEO, Charlie is a marketing genius and part-time escort. One year after the 'perfect night' ONS, they are brought together again, never forgetting THAT night. Both have issues from their past that keep them from finding happiness. I can't say enough about the writing: it's real, humorous, emotional, and the steam is steaming!! I'm really looking forward to the rest of this series!
The dual narration is so dang good. Devon Ryder and Dan Calley (new to me) were perfectly cast as the young Charlie and mature Sebastian. Loved the passion and emotion they brought to this story. 5/5 stars!!
