A deeply researched account of Wittgenstein's time in Galicia during World War I (August 1914-end of 1917). It combines his geographical movements and military experiences, his reading and literary interests, and his philosophical and spiritual thoughts into a rich tapestry. Every page or so I found myself following up ideas or references, so it took me a while to finish it. Well-worth the read. (Note: I was disappointed by the large number of typos and other infelicities of language, as well as some errors of page references. The author is not a native English speaker, which might account for some of this, but the publisher surely had the responsibility to catch most of the problems. It seemed like no one did a proof-reading. But I hope this does not detract from readers' appreciation of the substance of the book.)
