Love Bites #1

A Wolf's Duty

Rate this book
It isn’t everyday that a werewolf finds their mate but after two hundred years of waiting Tobias is more than willing to overlook Alexandria’s humanity and bring her into a world she never knew existed.

Eager to escape her father’s brutal fists, Alex lets her instant connection to Tobias overcome her natural reserve but she quickly finds his world is no less dangerous than the one she left behind.

As secrets come to light revealing how extraordinarily different Alex truly is, will their love survive or will his duty and her differences keep them apart?

Excerpt:
“Not now,” she muttered to herself, eyes still trained on the wolf in case it began to move again. “Come on legs work for God’s sake! I need to get out of here before wolfie over there decides he’s hungry or the crazy psycho wakes up and tries to kill me again.”

Leaning against the wall and holding it for support, Alex managed to make it to her feet, closing her eyes as she sighed in relief. 'Life isn’t bad enough with Fred as a father, I have to make my university explode with foliage, be attacked by a raving lunatic and saved by a wolf. I’ve had enough excitement for a lifetime, I’m done, I’m getting out of here and then –'

Her line of thought was cut short as she opened her eyes to find the body of her saviour wolf transforming into something else.

Seconds passed before a man stood in place of the wolf and an inane thought floated through her mind in the face of his transformation. He’s wearing clothes; I would have thought he’d be naked. She blushed at the thought. The man smiled as he began to approach her and all thought fled as her eyes rolled back and her mind went blissfully blank, the stresses of the day apparently having taken their toll.

It all began with a simple book and it's been so long now that I can't even remember what it was called, but all it took was one story and I was hooked to reading. One book after another, until my eyes hurt and my wrists ached from turning pages. My poor wrist didn't get any respite when I decided to pick up a pen and paper and begin writing stories of my own. After completing my first book, A Wolf's Duty, I was well and truly hooked. The love of crafting a tale, of creating a world filled with heroes and heroines that you could love and grow with was truly embedded in me.

I live in London and as any city dweller will tell you, a fast paced life does not make it easy to find time to write but seeing so much of the world around you does give you inspiration to create characters that are truly human, people that you want to read about because you've fallen in love with them.

I love fantasy and all things paranormal and my stories reflect this, bringing elements of the extraordinary into the lives of my characters. When I write, the sky truly is the limit because in a world crafted by my imagination anything is possible. Isn't that the creed of all romance? If it isn't well it's certainly something I aspire to...even if there are some rather unexpected obstacles in the way but that's just another joy of writing.

Werewolves. I love werewolves. I was so excited for this.

And then....

Well ....

Song Choice: "Face Down" by Red Jumpsuit Apparatus, "I and Love and You" by The Avett Brothers

First Thoughts: Soooo....like I didn't hate this book, I had a few things (okay maybe more than a few) that I just couldn't get over, and it really pulled me out of the whole reading experience and make me either yell at the characters, the book, or even scratch my head and go...huh? But see I wanted to love it, I really did, but ughhh I just couldn't bring myself to. I really did like the action in this book and I was happy to see that I really, really was :)

Thoughts on Plot: so this book started off kinda awesome, and I was really excited about it, but about probably 15 maybe 20% into the book things started to um go downhill a bit.. alot... sort of. For me at least. I mean Tobias seems to want to do what is best for Alex, but I felt like he didn't take in consideration her feelings, at all. Which seemed to really contradict the idea of the true mates in this book. With wolves that is to be expected, true mates I mean. I just had a hard time with it because it felt like half wanting to go with the grain, and do the natural wolf-true-mates thing, easy fall in love sort of ness, but the main girl (who apparently just decides things about herself) is slower to it, but not. I felt like this book was fighting between wanting to do the norm, to doing the unnatural, which is for werewolves mates to actually FALL in love with each other, so that we can see it. After awhile for me, it felt like it just dropped off and stopped trying, and just accepted the wolf-true-mateness. Again this could be completely all me. So that was a problem for me, because I just didn't believe in their relationship as much as i feel like I should have...I think i would have been perfectly alright with just making them insta-love with each other because at least I had something to believe in. Anyways moving on from that, the tone seemed really proper and almost stiff at times which again made it a little uncomfortable to read? I am not sure.... So getting over that-ness, I liked the action that was presented in this book, the multiple use of different villains and what nots, it was interested and kept the book going. Oh the sexy scenes too? To me they felt really forced, and the first one felt REALLY out of place...and I was wondering what the hell it was doing so early in the book when the characters were in the middle of playing tug-a-war with their feelings (well Alex was at least).....

Characters:

Alex: Um...okay. Part of me liked her. Really liked her, she was survivor, but she didn't see herself in that light, she was modest for the most part which was awesome. But she was walking contradiction. She didn't want to see Tobias as a murderer but she had some very murderess decisions herself. She was shocked by some people's actions which seemed odd as she did the same exact thing, essentially. I feel like we were always getting half of her and not all of her, I was waiting for her real personality to explode out...if that makes sense, for the most part I liked her, but she had very <= WTF moments? But thank god in the beginning she acted almost like a normal reasonable person, but there were a few moments in the beginning of the book that again she just decided these things upon herself. It almost felt like the author wanted to add that Alex had repressed memories, that would appear later making the reader go...ohh okay that is why she accepted it so easily...but that never happened and when it sort of did i didn't believe/trust it much?

Tobias: Ummm.....I felt instead of a 300+ year old Prince, he felt more like a toddler who didn't want people taking away his toy sometimes...Its weird like he is waayyyyy too protective, to the point its not sexy, its annoying and almost debilitating. Also I get he is a guy...I get he is a male, wolf in a human body, with a man as well, so lots and lots of wanting of the sex, but seriously i felt like that is all he wanted from her sometimes....and um WTF?! for their first time together, like together, together....? it was her first time, he knew that, but he just went ...okay calming down... So while he wasn't my favorite main man, he is not the worst i have read. He did have redeeming qualities

The Council: Is the council filled with the stupidest people they could possibly find? Also the least wolf-ish like males in the universe? Seriously I thought they were unnecessary and all of them were beyond stupid. I don't even understand why the King had kept them...They are all horrible people, I can't express how much I hate them, and they weren't even the villains they were supposed to be the good guys?

The ending: It was good. Tied up nicely.

I honestly am not sure if I will be continuing on with the series.

Ok so this is your typical I meet you for the first time your my mate book. That's fine I don't mind these kinds of books. But this goes a bit beyond nothing seems the phase Alex. She finds out she a witch ok, she's mated to a supernatural being she thought didn't really exist ok. Someone's trying to kill me ok. A power hungry werewolf wants to challenge me bring it on. Alex just doesnt have correct responses to these situations.

I've been craving a werewolf book for a while. They always heave the perfect Alpha male lead. It's also interesting to see how each author goes about doing the whole inner wolf thing. Jennifer Alli did a pretty amazing job doing the man wolf interaction and that was probably my favorite part. Hearing Tobias talk to his wolf was hilarious. This guys wolf had a sense of humor, and I was always looking forward to the next time his wolf decided to come about.
Alexandra or Xandria as Tobias liked to call her was a sweet heroine. She was a little too naive for her own good but she wanted to help people and wanted Tobias to always be able to see reason. Her life was pretty miserable, in the beginning of the book I just wanted to reach out and give the girl a hug. She had to put up with being severely abused by Fred, her life at the university wasn't much better. She was actually pretty positive for a girl dealing with that much stress. She didn't mope around.
Tobias... I love this guy so much he gets his own paragraph. Heck, it's a good thing I didn't write the entire review about him. He was a werewolf and a king at that, and a king werewolf who waited 200 years for his mate. Basically that makes him protective cubed. But I liked that side of him. He wanted to kill anyone who harmed his mate. His love for her was adorable and I love that he always put her first. Also he was hot and his dialogue had me swooning. So yeah this guy won me over and he'll win you over too. Oh and his scenes with Xandria? To die for they were so hot!!!
The plot was a little slow, but think it allowed their relationship to develop better. There were a few things I didn't get like why did Xandria's mom stay with Fred? Especially if she had all that money? She could have easily left him and lived a happy life with Xandria. There were a few small plot holes but nothing terrible or really even annoying.

Generally, I am not a fan of werewolf novels. Most of the time, werewolves have been villains in other stories. It seems that they started gaining some popularity as romantic lead-ins after the "Twilight" series came out. As I am not a fan, my view point never really changed and I admit that I tended to avoid many werewolf stories. Those I did read (or in the case of movies: watch), were mingled with their lifetime struggle with vampires; ie. Underworld, Van Helsing, etc.

"A Wolf's Duty" may have me re-thinking that thought process. Instead of your typical werewolf story, Tobias and the other wolves in the story are not a clan of wolves infected by lycanthropy, cursed to live their lives based on the faces of the moon. These wolves are more like shapeshifters, which was an intriguing concept alone. Add into the mix a realistic heirarchy amongst the clans, or packs, my interest was definitely piqued.

I enjoyed Alli's telling of Tobias' journey to find his true mate, which leads him to Alex. What I liked most about Alex, as a character, was that she wasn't too strong, nor was she too focused on what could be perceived as her many shortcomings in comparison to Tobias. There's a good balance between the romance and acceptance of who they are and their relationship to one another. There are not many erotic scenes between them, but those that are there are very hot.

If you are looking for a good paranormal romance, you'll enjoy "A Wolf's Duty" and I recommend it. When I began reading it, I devoured 3/4 of the book in a short period of time. This is only book one in a trilogy and I look forward to moving onto the next story in the series.

I have mixed feelings about this book. In some ways it was really good. The author was very creative when she fashioned all the rules the wolves live by. She was at least unique and I liked how the wolf living inside the Tobias would get into arguments with him. I thought that part was really amusing. I also liked Alex's gift. She is a Witch that can hear and control plants. I couldn't figure out however why Alex's mother stayed with her abusive husband especially when she had a fortune at her disposal that she willed to her daughter when she hit 21. Why didn't she just use the money and take Alex away from the abuse? I suppose other things I didn't like are outside of the authors control. The font size kept changing. It would go from really small to large and that got annoying. I also think someone needs to go through and edit the authors work better for her. There were a lot of instances where the wrong but similar word was used. It reminds me of how MS Word programs will offer spelling suggestions or your phone will autocorrect something you are texting. Those kinds of things got annoying and distracted me from the story. I plan to try and find other things this author has written. Her ideas were so unique and I think she has a lot of potential.

How is this book simultaneously a work of art and an absolute dumpster fire?

Jennifer T. Alli casually dropped the hardest werewolf lore in the most unedited book and dipped. I love these books and always have (this is about my 5th time reading it since I was 12). They desperately needed to be edited and toned down a bit, but they slap so hard.

The biggest issue in this book (other than the wild mood swings of characters) is the amount of villains. Why did everyone in the entire world want to abuse and or kill Alex? Literally everyone.

Tobias, man of my heart, is perfection. Xandria is badass. Love.

I hate giving this such a low score because this story has POTENTIAL. But even aside from the typos and the spelling errors and the formatting issues definitely reads like a first draft. There are places where the story backtracks and events feel really out of order and the villain is too obvious from the moment he steps on to the page and then it's tied up in the last couple of chapters and everyone's like "Wow, that was so terrible of him to do such a thing, none of us could have predicted that he would do that."

The lore needs more build up, and the palace court intrigue was very flimsy.

Great story but the reasons I didn't give this book 5 stars were:
-It has a few mistakes throughout, that sometimes get confusing;
-The amount of times that Alex says the word Tobias (He knows his own name no need to be repeating it every 5 seconds) ;
-And the fact that Alex is so chill about everything that happens to her (werewolves exist: okay, I'm a witch: okay, we're mates: okay, you're kidnapping me: as long as you get me my mother's photo, okay).

Overall, good first book and I'm excited to start the next one and see what happens with Sebastian.

An addictive werewolf romance series for adults. It offers great escapism. I highly recommend for fans of Jennifer L. Armentrout / Jamie McGuire / Nalini Singh, but please be aware that there is a few steamy scenes in these so definitely not for young adults.

I haven't read anything by this author before and it didn't disappoint. There were a few editing issues which meant having to re-read sentences here and there to make sense of them but I'm glad I persevered. I would have given it 4 stars if it wasn't for those issues.

Alexandria/Alex/Xandria is something of a loner who suffers brutally at the hands of her alcoholic father. She's 20 years old and as well as being at university, she also works part time and hopes to save enough to eventually flee after she finishes her degree. Saving isn't easy though as her father Fred takes virtually all of her money for his alcohol. Not only does her father beat her at home, but she also has a nemesis at university named Emily who takes great joy in picking fights with her as well.

Tobias is a werewolf who has waited over 200 years to meet his mate. He first becomes aware of her when her cries for help wake him from his sleep. Unknown to him at the time, his mate is thousands of miles away in England and he starts on an epic journey to find her. Fast forward 4 years and he has finally located her and is surprised to discover she is human. Her humanity is not a problem for him but he quickly realises that he cannot just introduce himself to her as her mate simply because she doesn't know that werewolves exist so he sets about ensuring that he accidentally on purpose bumps into her.

After they meet, Alex is reticent about forging ahead with a friendship with Tobias and against her better judgment, she agrees to a date. She's knows it would be bad news for her if her father should find out but she can't seem to help herself. After she goes on a day time date with him, Tobias gives her a bracelet which catches the eye of Emily and she decides she wants it for herself. After an altercation in the corridor, something happens which terrifies Emily and leads Alex to run straight home. Once there, she is grabbed from behind and has a knife held to her throat by someone who says that he wants her powers..... powers that until that day, she didn't know she had. Whilst struggling to think of a way to get out of her current situation, a wild animal enters her house and saves her from the knifeman. The only problem with that scenario is that her rescuer is a wolf who before her very eyes, morphs into a man!

Tobias, it turns out, is not only her saviour but also her kidnapper! When he learns what has happened to her, he whisks her away to his home which happens to be in the US and if that wasn't enough of a shock, she learns that he is royalty and soon to be King now that he has found her. It should be a happy ever after but as we've only got about a quarter of the way into the book, there's far more to come. Not only does Alex face a challenge to her position as mate to Prince Tobias but her past also catches up to her in her new home. And as if that is not enough excitement, she is kidnapped from her home again, right under the nose of Tobias which doesn't go down well.

A thoroughly entertaining book and I'm hoping that the editing issues are not as prominent in the next book.

Ahahaaha well this was certainly interesting.

and soo cute!
on that note, let me just add these and get them out of the way :P

Now, as to the book. Well i obviously liked it, this kind of different from other werewolf novels. Especially concerning Wolfie :P and his very prominent role. Usually the wolves are like a conscience for the lack of a better word. They seem to only appear when they have particularly strong feelings about something or if its something relating to their mate. But here, Wolfie seems to ab completely separate entity except for the mind-meld.
.
.
.
.
.
Look at me, you'd think i was complaining. Im NOT. Loved the idea. Loved Wolfie. Werewolf world could use a change ;)

I'm gonna skip my gushing over Tobias, his relationship with Alex and all that, cause honestly I could write pages and quite frankly that would leave me without readers :(

So im gonna get straight to the part i didn't like. You will be happy to know, this unhappiness occurred in the first quarter of the story and not really after that. Usually id skip this part cause beginning rarely ever sit right with a new reader but i just have to express my disbelief over how accepting Alex was of everything.
Then there were bits and pieces here and there. Issues with the editing tend to get annoying since they break the flow.

But forgetting all that, I had a real fun time reading this. Wish i had my own wolf

4+ stars

Book 1 of the 'Love Bites' series (GR or the author really needs to get these numbered!)

Kept my interest and had plenty of action with probably a perfect amount of smex that didn't detract from the story, but fit in appropriately.

Couldn't give it 5 stars because of the editing mistakes... not the worst I have seen, but distracting enough to cause half a star.

There was also a little something about the 'time flow' of the story, where you would have the feeling that more time would have gone by, but then it is said it is only a day, or a week... No one eats dinner in this book, either, which it seems would be an event in a Royal household. Little things like this were worth a half point to me, especially since this was a long book and there was plenty of room for that sort of thing. As far as I could tell, Alexandria never ate anything but a few breakfasts and a lot of peaches!

Because the author is British, there are some terms that will confuse Americans, but not all that many that it should make you stop reading the story.

Even with all of that, Jennifer T. Alli is quite a good writer.

I would still recommend this book to anyone that likes werewolf series.

Book 2 is 'A Wolf's Oath' and Book 3 is 'A Wolf's Pride' (I think... no one has numbered them).

I am reading Book 2 next.

Great start to what I see as a trilogy of books. The overall plot and characters were great and there were very good secondary characters also. The plot and overall story had just great potential, but it fell flat sometimes, which is the reason for the four stars. There were parts that were extremely long winded and I ended up skimming over some and not missing much. I was also a bit surprised that Alexandria took being a witch and the werewolves at such face value never questioning it, never pausing to think really is this actually real? A small freakout factor would have been okay. One last thing that I didn't much care for was the constant use of "dearest". There are some other synonyms that could have been used. It just also seemed very old fashioned, but then again we are talking about a 316 year old werewolf. Overall the story was good and I will be reading the next two A Wolf's Oath and A Wolf's Pride and I am looking forward to seeing how they turn out.

Tobias that man is all for Alex he is really possessive, "she's hurt. Someone had the audacity to harm what's mine," he snarled, ripping the remains of the shredded sheets from himself and standing." And he would literally kill anyone who insulted her, "what?" he roared, his voice echoing through the large room. "She's my mate; I've nothing to be ashamed of. And I'll kill anyone that tries to make her feel that way. I'll bring her, mother, just not yet." Alex is a curious one and well Tobias's body is one of her many fascinations, "it's softer than I would have thought, for something so hard," she commented while trying to wrap her hand around him. Her failure brought a frown to her brow. "I'm not sure, seeing as I've got nothing to compare it to, but are they all this big?" Tobias is one to ravish his woman, "no more talking dearest, the full moon isn't a night for talking. It's a night for other, more pleasurable activities."

I won this book through a Blog Hop that the author participated in.

When I began reading it, I thought I was going to be reading a Young Adult novel. Once I got a few chapters in, I realized I was wrong. Oops! Though there are only a few scenes of intimacy, this book is most definitely not for a Young Adult audience. However, if you enjoy Adult Romance, it was very tastefully written. The story itself flowed smoothly and kept my interest. In so many stories, the couple immediately falls in love. I really liked how Alex didn't let herself fall blindly in love with Tobias. She made him work for it a little.

A waste of good money. I bought all four in the series and I can't recommend them to anyone, certainly not anyone who loves good stores with plots and characters, let alone grammar and punctuation. I'm an extremely fast reader and usually can't wait to keep picking up a book, but, my feet dragged every time. The writing is juvenile, told how a young girl might imagine adults to be. Who calls anyone "Dearest" in these times? As an avid reader of paranormal, I suspend my beliefs every time I open one because I don't really believe they exist, but these tell me to suspend it in human terms as well. Ill-conceived, poorly-written and full of holes a mile wide. Pass this whole series by; I only made it past the second one before deleting all four. The other two aren't worth the time to open them.

A very fun and lighthearted werewolf romance and I couldn't put it down! I fell in love with the world of the werewolves that Jennifer T. Alli created. There were a lot of rules to the supernatural society, but at the same time the characters weren't too brooding and moody as werewolves are often written. On the contrary, Alli's characters are positive, fun and ready to battle every problem that arises. I loved Tobias's inner dialogues with his wolf. The realtionship between Tobias and Alex was also very well written. Alex is softhearted, but not panicky or judgmental or fear-ridden as often happens with heroines in all romances. There was also plenty of action besides the romantic relationship so I liked the pacing. All in all, a really enjoyable read.

Another really enjoyable story my Jennifer Alli. Because I am reading these out of order, I felt like this was a wolfie family reunion of sorts. I have no clear favorite from the two books (A Wolf's Duty and A Wolf's Pride) in the series I have read, which is great! I am going to move onto the second book in the series A Wolf's Oath.

I enjoyed this book as much as the second, I accidentally read them backwards, my only issue was there were a few grammatical errors and/or typos that got to me a bit. I purchased my copy through kindle, so I am not sure if it is a kindle thing, or an issue through all sources of this book. Overall good book, the errors didn't overshadow the story

The idea of the Prince waiting for "The One" for 200 yrs was pretty romantic, but the story was a bit slow paced (dragged a bit). Oh and his pet name for her " dearest" gave me the heebbie geebies. I get that he's ancient but come on, there are so many other things to call a gal where you're not made to feel like a mummy.
