To write a novel was a dream of mine since I was a child. Life, my practical nature, and self-doubt got in the way, so it was decades later that an opportunity to write finally presented itself. I honestly didn't think I had what it takes to write a full-length novel, but once I faced the blank screen and my fingers touched the keyboard, everything disappeared except my characters and their surroundings, and suddenly I knew that this was what I was born to do.

Since then, I've written many books and have enjoyed some positive reviews, but sometimes, when I stop to reflect, I'm still amazed that I'm living my dream.

Loved it. It was a great read. What a twisted mystery. I still enjoy the relationship between Daniel Haze and Jason Redmond. The characters are well developed but have grown a little since the first book and I enjoy seeing the growth.

Voices from the Grave

This book was very hard to put down. There were no clues to the murder of the medium, but Daniel and Jason worked their own type of magic to piece together a convoluted crime. The Redmond and Haze mysteries do not fail to hold your interest.

This was probably one of my favorite of the Redmond and haze books. Which is kinda strange since my favorite side-character is murdered. I seriously almost cried. Despite this awful event that will surely affect any future books, (because this person is absolutely fascinating and I was hoping to find them popping up occasionally),I loved the book. Of course, Jason is, as usual, spot on and so detailed that I have to remind myself he isn’t actually the detective. I guess, to me, he’s the Sherlock and Daniel is the Watson. But anyway this book follows, you guess it, a murder. This one, however, will take you to otherworldly areas that really kept me guessing until the end. Angel Flyte was an interesting new face and I loved the presence and role that up she played, though I admit, I was fooled into not liking her even before the reader (or myself) met her. She was an interesting addition and I found myself hoping she would appear again and again in the book. Like a giddy “what will she say next” situation. I’m wondering if she will replace the victim in future cases. 🤞🏻I was happy with the peace that Daniel was able to find because he struggles so much with unanswered questions and despite my earlier “Watson” label, I genuinely like his character and his tenacity, not so much his constant, negativity, but, hey, you can’t have it all. I really want him to find the happiness he struggles with, especially over the last few books. They have been quite dramatic for the ole chap. I tend to get incredibly frustrated by the attitudes towards and by the titled as well as the police, but I must keep reminding myself of the time period and location. And I do love the little nods to future advancements in forensics that pop up from time to time. I wish I could spell out the whole book but as these books tend to follow a case solving formula, per say, even the smallest spoiler could ruin the whole thing. However, I thought it was an excellent read. I am excited for the next in the series.

Murder and messages from beyond the grave

I loved this installment of the historical whodunit series staring Captain Jason Redmond and Inspector Daniel Haze. Like the other books in the series, it had a layered storyline, an intriguing mystery, surprising plot twists, and suspense. I was equally desperate to read it all at once to solve the mystery and also to savor it and make it last. Jason and Daniel are portrayed as real, relatable and complex people who have flaws and scars, but are really just trying to do their best as messy humans. Captain Jason Redmond is an American surgeon who inherited his British grandfather’s estate and title. He is living with his wife and infant daughter in London while he teaches, volunteers at the hospital and performs autopsies for the police. Daniel Haze is a detective inspector for Scotland Yard. He is widowed and lives with his young daughter. Jason and Daniel are good friends and their different approaches often complement each other while solving cases together. They are once again attempting to solve a difficult mystery when Alicia Lysander, a renowned medium and a trusted acquaintance of Jason, is attacked and dies in the cab on the way to Jason’s house. The investigation into the death leads Daniel and Jason to unlikely places, dead ends, plot twists, secrets, and surprising revelations. As always, there are smaller side personal story arcs and social commentary which enrich the main plot line and give the characters greater dimension. I love this series and these characters.

Enjoyable.

The current case hits close to home for Jason and Daniel. Alicia, the medium who had given Jason valuable information that led to the return of Daniel's kidnapped daughter, Charlotte, has been murdered right after holding a seance at a nobleman's house. Now Redmond and Haze have to figure out whether it was a member at the seance, Alicia's lover, or someone who had too much to lose if the medium lived. Or what if she was killed because she "conjured" up the wrong spirit? This was an interesting story because of why the medium was murdered. Daniel, and many others, would like to call Alicia's ability to commune with spirits hogwash, except Daniel knows that it was only through Alicia and the spirits that Charlotte was found and returned to him. Jason was already convinced that Alicia was the real deal. He'd seen her in action and he believed she really could commune with the dead. Now they just had to solve the case before the powerful, rich man they suspect might be a party to Alicia's murder has them thrown off the case and has Daniel drummed out of the police force. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and will be waiting for the next one.

2.5 stars. The basic premise was okay, but the way the mystery was solved stretched the belief a little too thin. Even so, the murderer was fairly obvious early on.

I was disconcerted by the treatment of the rank - one of the characters is mentioned as having two titles - duke and earl. He is constantly referred to as earl, but addressed as 'your grace'. In fact it confused me initially until the two ranks were mentioned at one point. Doesn't the highest rank of a aristocrat always take precedence?

I have mostly enjoyed this series, though some of the books were less interesting than others. In general, I liked the mysteries and the way the picture of the key characters and their relationships have evolved over the time. But I am wondering if the series is losing steam as often happens with long series.

Whew, what a ride! this was the latest installment (so far!) in this amazing series! I've been hooked from the beginning, and this book didn't disappoint. One of the things I appreciate most about this series is Irina Shapiro's commitment to character development. Even the smallest roles have contributed to the overall story arc, and each character, big or small, has shown growth throughout the series. It's a testament to Shapiro's skill as a writer.

The mystery was just as compelling. While I did manage to guess the killer fairly early on, that didn't diminish my enjoyment one bit. The intricate plot twists and smaller cliffhangers kept me on the edge of my seat, and I was constantly second-guessing myself. Shapiro masterfully wove together the clues, creating a suspenseful and engaging read. The journey to the reveal was just as thrilling as the reveal itself.

I'm eagerly awaiting the next book in this series!

Book 15 in the Redmond and Haze series

I had the audiobook read by Alex Lee who has a good range of voices for the characters adding interest to the storytelling.

I love the Tate and Bell Victorian mystery series so decided to try this mystery series set in the same era as it’s included in the audible plus catalogue. It’s well into the series, it was the inclusion of a medium which drew my attention, the Victorian’s were quite obsessed with spiritualism.

Here we have a police constable and an American who is an Army Captain and surgeon who are investigating the de@th of notorious psychic Alicia. There’s also a personal connection between Daniel and Alicia.

This series is the author’s entry into the world of the mystery genre.
It didn’t grab me the same as the Bell and Tate series as I love their interaction and love interest. There are many similarities, the era, the writing style so I think if you like the one series you’ll enjoy the other.

The lengths of love!
We have a respected medium on her way to Jason’s after conducting a seance she literally dies at his residence!
There are secrets that Alicia Lysander has secrets she took to her grave! Can another medium divulge those secrets beyond the grave!?
Will a killer go free because of their status and title! This story has several roads all finally leading to 1 conclusion!
There is happy mixed with sad and a very surprising response from Daniel who scoffed all things supernatural! Daniel actually listens and takes advice from one!? Impossible and implausible results to an investigation that draws several players in! Suspects that appear guilty but are innocent! There is treachery and innocents involved who will never see the light of day! Jealousy is cruel as the grave!
A rollercoaster ride that you won’t soon forget or be able to put down! Bravo

Great as always and thought provoking as well.
Great characters, setting and plots. Daniel and Jason are desperately seeking who murdered their fried Alicia, a renowned medium as she returns home after a starling seance. Moe suspects with supposed alibis, take a great deal of patience to unwind. Plus, Superindentent Ransome wants a quick save to spare Scotland Yard and his job embarrassment from the papers. Enjoy the search for a murderer or murderers while Daniel and Jason's personal stories supply great back stories and clues to future books. Highly recommend!

I have just finished reading book 15 of Redmond and Haze amazing read each book gave more insight to the characters and the life they led can’t wait for June 2nd to get book 16 could have read the prelude of the book but it is going to be hard enough waiting for it without knowing where the book is going. If anyone enjoys reading a series of books then this is a must read the storyline and being based in the 1800s is very interesting and worth reading we don’t know how lucky we are.

Just finished Redmond and Haze nr 15 and loved it, it will be hard to wait until June for nr 16. I do like how with every book we get to know a bit more about those two men and their caracters and to see how their friendship grows. Irina Shapiro is one of my favorite authors and I really like how some her series are linked together like f.ex. Redmond and Haze are linked to "Echoes from the past". Next on my list is "The Passage" I am sure it will be a treat.

Excellent!

Great series and this story is extremely good! Lots of misinformation and members of the aristocracy who confuse the situation. Rank does have its privileges in this time period and all the suspicious parties belong to this set! Lies, misdirection, lack of cooperation hinder the investigation, until the very end!

Excellent Historical Detective Fiction

4.5 Star - Irina Shapiro is a very solid detective suspense writer. Her plot-line has been consistently solid and believable. The best is that she didn’t have to use sex in her novels unlike some other writers. Her researches were very solid. Read it and enjoy it.

a fast paced, well-written mystery!

Another engrossing read in the Redmond & Haze mysteries! I’ve really enjoyed this series of books, and find it hard to put down once begun. Irina builds such descriptive passages that it’s easy to imagine the scenes which there heightens the strength of the story. Can’t wait for the next book!

I love this series of books. Each book gets you more and more involved with the characters and they lives. I can't wait to read the next book in this series and find out if Daniel finally has the love he desires and Jason will be there to see his friend married. Thank you for a great set of Victorian mysteries.

I like how easy to read this series is - its not epic literature, but its fun. I can quickly hop into it, solve what I can, and still feel satisfied with the ending. This one got me a little, I knew who to suspect but there was a small twist at the end of the perpetrator which I didnt see. Will continue the series as long as they continue to be written.

3.5 Stars for this 15th book of a series I have continued to read. It is faithful to the theme and developed characters over the span of 15 books but I grimaced more than once during the reading. I just might give it a pass when the 16th rolls out.

Was bummed about the victim of this book- was hoping they’d be in future books…

Still over the Inspector being a judgmental jerk.

I was excited to learn about some real historical info in this book regarding religious people that I didn’t know about…

Another good one

The dead have a way of getting justice. I loved the intervention of mediums to help solve the murder. Even the ton can't escape their bad behavior with Jason and Daniel working a case.
