From the moment Andy starts working for Lex, their lives spiral into a chaos of heated arguments and forbidden desires. Soon, they must decide if their budding relationship is worth risking their careers.
When Andrea "Andy" Walker lands her dream job at a tech company, her new colleagues welcome her with open arms. It would be nothing short of perfect if it weren't for her new boss. Obnoxious, curt, and aloof, he seems determined to make her life difficult. He's everything she shouldn't want, and yet Andy soon finds herself helplessly drawn to his striking looks and razor-sharp mind.
Alexander "Lex" Coleman likes having every aspect of his life meticulously planned and organized. That goes flying out the window the moment he meets Andrea, the feisty new programmer who challenges him at every turn. Not only is she far from the compliant employee he expected, she also triggers a plethora of confusing emotions with her sharp tongue, strong mind, and tempting curves.
In between heated arguments, something far more intense grows between them-something they can't quite control. Before they know it, their working relationship gets all tangled up in his high-thread-count sheets. Now, they both face their own dilemma.
Should Andy risk her career, new life, and budding friendships for a sizzling affair with her boss? And should Lex jeopardize the solitary life he always envisioned for himself?

✯✯✯✯4/5 stars✯✯✯✯ ANAAAAA. WHAT WAS THAT ENDINGGGG😭 im gonna keep this short and sweet because im beyond baffled at that cliffhanger at the end; this book was so freaking fun, i loved the vibes. the fmc (Andrea) being a geeky latina just made it so much better for me too because same✨ she was so funny and relatable, and as someone who’s entering the tech career world, i enjoyed the setting and the plot outside of the romance. as for Lex? i love him so much i was literally GNAWING at the iron bars of my enclosure. all i can think about is that ending so, i need the next book immediately 🙂↕️
But how dare you leaving us hanging up like that 🤯 I obviously can’t wait for the next one so take your time but hurry up please ? 🥺
This book was literal perfection from start to finish! Right from the start, I loved Andrea’s character! She’s so relatable and I adored her sense of humor and just her vibe really. I’d love to be friends with her 🩷
Lex was super charming 😮💨 you could feel the tension between these two right after they met but when that forced proximity trope hit 😮💨🔥it was so well done !! Also, their dynamic 🥹 they are sooo made for each other !! I LOVE THEM
This has to be one of the spiciest book I’ve ever read! If you love spice, you’re gonna love the desire variable 🩵 but the plot was also super interesting !
Easiest 5 ⭐️ ever ! This Is my favorite read of the year without a doubt ✨ 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️
Thank you so much Ana & Love notes pr for the Arc 🩷🩵
If you like messy workplace, boss/employee, fwb that is hot, hot, hot, then I’d recommend this one! You’ve also got diverse characters (so there so much excellent representation here), flawed MC’s, lots of pining and it also has a unique workplace setting too! (At least for me and I’m here for this energy)
And oddly enough, it was giving a dash of fifty shades of grey for me too!
I had no idea it was the first book in a duology or series but I need book 2 asap! I need to know what happens next 👀.
Thank you so much to Ana D'Arcy and Love Notes PR for my ARC, I really appreciate it 🥰.
thank you to lovenotespr for this copy! :) || minor spoilers.*
girls, i wanted to like this one so bad. the cover? beautiful. the premise? a little cliche, but im a sucker for cliche. the characters? oh i was ready for some STEAMY romance.
and i did get steamy romance. however, it was pretty much all steam. the plot was promising, and i found myself excited in the first half of the book, but the writing started to fall flat for me. it was very wattpad-esque, and there's nothing wrong with that, but i was looking for a little something more from the quality, a little oomf to separate it from other books similar to it.
i could not see super concise development between these characters. they were always in each other's pants, which okay. sure. he's hot. but seriously, i felt like every other chapter was them on a desk, against the wall, in a bed, in a closet, in the office... it went on and on. & im not saying thats bad! i am saying that it was very lust-driven and not at all what i am looking for romantically developing wise.
also... that cliffhanger? it could've easily been resolved in this book. i get wanting to continue to explore the world and stay with the characters, but this book was 90% smut, 10% plot and... well, yeah, that's all.
i did enjoy the comedic aspect of this book and the characters were fun. i will probably pick up the second book just so i know what happens, but... eh.
thank you Lovenotes PR and Ana D'Arcy for the ARC <3
Darn you Ana D’Arcy for that ending😭✋🏼 how dare you?!
Anyway, The Desire Variable was a nice mix between sweet, spicy, and nerdy. i would even argue it was a bit too spicy at times.
but the tension made up for it! This book is like a love letter to all the nerds out there, who want to make something of themselves. Who find people they share the same interests with, who love the same things, who make the same jokes.
It was slow but i don’t know i think it fits the story perfectly.
The ending sucks tho! be warned! (part 2 is coming pretty soon tho!)
-Grump x sunshine -boss x employee -love triangle of some sort? -TENSIONNN -nerdy guyzz -found family

i've heard this has a cliffhanger and idk how that's going to work out in a contemporary setting but i'm exited to find out!
it also has deaf/hard of hearing and ASL rep!!! as someone who is currently learning Dutch Sign language, it's very fun to see it in written form! you don't see that a lot
This is not a standalone book. It’s also over 400 pages.
What the fu you guys. I can’t believe I just read a rando KU romance that was that long just for a bs ending. I almost dnf’ed several times because of the pacing and the strange pov changes but powered through bc I’m a believer in a good ol’ HEA.
This book had a whole lotta smut(like too much, with zero plot), and zero HEA.
I cannot think of a time I’ve read a book that warrants this page length, a tbc, and is singularly a romance novel(but again literally drowning in smut). Breaking a romance out like that is like the antithesis of the genre 😭
Also, I have zero tolerances for lines like: “As unfeminist as it may sound, she was put on this earth to care for kids…” ain’t NO WAY we shame women for choosing to be mothers. Nope nope nope.
✨ The Desirable Variable is the first book I’ve read by Ana D’Arcy, and from the moment I started, I couldn’t put it down! 📖💫
At first glance, I thought this was going to be your typical rom-com, but as they say, never judge a book by its cover. This was a nerdy, enemies-to-lovers, employer/employee, spicy romance that kept me hooked from page one! 🔥💕
I loved all the dynamics, though I wasn’t a fan of how Andy handled a few things. Still, the characters were fantastic!
🔍 Lex: A complicated character, stuck in his own head with a stiffness that led him to make some questionable decisions. But like Andy, I couldn’t help but fall for him. 🧠 Andy: My spirit animal, a true nerd at heart, and her insecurities resonated with me on so many levels.
At times, I couldn’t help but compare this book to Fifty Shades of Grey—not because Lex is a millionaire genius with incredible stamina 💪😏—but because of how the story evolves, especially towards the end. The final cliffhanger had me on the edge, and now I need book 2 ASAP! 😱📚
Thank you, Love Note PR, for this amazing ARC! The Desirable Variable is out on October 15th, 2024—don’t miss it!
What the hell did I just read?! Oh my days. This was FANTASTIC! I was hooked and the last 15% had my jaw on the floor. I wanted to hit a wall. February cannot come fast enough. I need 3 to 5 business days to recover. Thank you to love notes pr and ana for the chance at an arc.
1.5⭐️ and I’m being generous The book was alright. It was so long just to end in a cliffhanger also the fmc is supposed to be half Mexican and speak Spanish but the Spanish she was speaking was Spain Spanish like “coño” “la madre que te pario” and “me calma tus tetas” among other words/sentences, as a Mexican myself who grew up in Mexico and spends a lot of time there no one uses those words since that’s Spain Spanish not Mexican Spanish theirs a big difference between both. I really tried to enjoy the book but the fact that their was really no progress between the characters they were just f buddies for most of the book and then the last 2% of the book they decided to date but then they broke up, that was just so annoying and a waste of time. The Mexican representation in this book is so horrible and not even done correctly which is truly disappointing.
POSSIBLY THE BEST CONTEMPORARY ROMANCE EVER?! OH MY GOD THAT ENDING. NEED BOOK 2 ASAP.
I was lucky enough to get to read this book before everyone else and I am so fucking glad that I got to do it. The premise of this book was based on inclusitivity. I loved how the author weaved in awareness about invisible disabilities. This book was literally the best. The main characters, Andy and Lex are a match made in heaven. Their chemistry is SIZZLING. Their banter is top notch. And their love... Ufff. Words can't describe just how much I adore them.
Two geeks who hated each other but end up loving each other is one of my fav tropes and Ana has executed it so well. The story follows Andrea 'Andy' Walker, who just joined a new company in Seattle as a developer. On Andy's first day, she realised her colleagues expected a male and her being a female created disbelief among them, but especially to her boss, Alexander 'Lex' Coleman. So when Lex asked to test her again, that marked the start of her being enemies with the boss.
Watching that hate burn and blast into love was everything. The angst and chemistry was fire. I loved every second of it. The found family was amazing. I loved the side characters as much as I did the main characters.
Their story had me blushing, giggling and kicking my feet. I loved everything and enjoyed every moment I spent reading this book. I genuinely can't get enough of them and can't wait for book 2. Especially after that ending. 🫢🫢
You too will love this book if you love: ✨ STEM romance ✨ Enemies to lovers ✨ Office romance ✨ Forbidden love (Boss x employee) ✨ Secret relationship ✨ Slow burn but make it SPICY ✨"Who did this to you?!"
This book is perfect for the fans of Ali Hazelwood but like reading more spicy books!
Why the fuck is this book so long 💀 I’m DNF-ing at 21%.
By 5%, they’re already lusting after each other Gurl is legit having wet dreams about him 🤡
And to make it worse, in the first chapter, he is already referencing a hookup (not explicit, but we know he’s got a woman on call).
But the worst part? The secondhand embarrassment. Andy kept exposing herself so hard I wanted to crawl under a rock for her 💀💀 It’s like every interaction between them was a train wreck I couldn’t look away from. I was hoping for some witty banter or actual chemistry, but it was just awkward exchanges and cringy moments that made me feel like I was watching a bad sitcom.
At this point, I couldn’t care less if they hook up or ruin their careers. The pacing is off, the tension feels forced, and honestly, life is too short to slog through this kind of chaos. DNF, no regrets.
I'm still reeling from this amazing read. Andy and Lex's story is everything I didn't know I needed. The slow-burn tension between them was chef's kiss. Their banter? Top-notch. Their chemistry? Sizzling hot. I was literally blushing and giggling the whole time. 🥴
I loved how the author tackled the issue of invisible disabilities so seamlessly. It added a layer of depth to Andy's character that I really appreciated. And the found family vibes? Heart eyes emoji. I'm already obsessed with the side characters and can't wait to see more of them.
But let's talk about that ending. Oof. The cliffhanger was brutal, but it's left me desperate for book 2. I need to know what happens next! PLEASE 😭😭.
While there were a few parts that felt a bit drawn out, it didn't take away from the overall enjoyment of the story. This book is a must-read for anyone who loves a good enemies-to-lovers romance with a healthy dose of STEM.
Thank you to Love Notes PR and the author for sending me the ARC of this lovely and amazing book!
•Doesn’t pass the bechdel test: We’re introduced to yet another MC who resembles Superman, of course a nerdy beefy dude (I don’t mind that but… Suspension of belief.) Every interaction revolves around talking about him or some other guy. I don’t like nor care for the Oli plot line.
• Awesome scene were she hold her own when tested by the boss/Lex. • Slighty unrealistic as the men are instantly taken with her and tell her she’s one of them. As if men in tech are ever as welcoming as a whole and not misogynistic and threatened by a young woman like Lex was implying. And the whole company is warm. Again, suspension of belief. Blah. Blah.
• It got tiring and repetitive real fast as a few chapters upon chapters of sex and smut, no character development and honestly I skimmed the sex scenes at all at some point.
• Andrea got on my nerves so much I almost dnf. I don’t like the internal talk, even at the beginning where she straight up put Oli as a love interest knowing she wasn’t interested. The idea of just being friends didn’t even cross her mind until after they went on a date and stuff… Like no. And she keeps talking about goofing off but it’s never shown or very little. Again, I didn’t care for it. They don’t even know each other that well either, come to think of it.
• Didn’t like that she sold her concept to the company for so little money and it’s completely become lost in the « story ».
• Nerd and vagina are mentioned so much: I get it, they’re nerds. Only nerds have interests in ALL the bar activities, yes. Also, vagina and the fact she’s a girl was hammered within the first couple pages and it came off as weird, even though I get it that it’s to drive the point that she’s a woman in a man’s world.
• Twilight mentioned
• Weird way of describing body parts that feel like you’re reading a Historical romance. Very repetitive, too.
3.4⭐️ There is something missing. I liked the romance in the office, the tech, and the grumpy boss/ sunshine employee relationship. I was engrossed in the first half, but I lost interest in the latter part. The interaction between Andy and Alex started to drag and felt repetitive; It might have been better with more character development.
I’m not allowed to pick out random books at the bookstore anymore. I can no longer trust my own split second decisions.
Oof. I tried. I was looking for a book that would make me feel the way The Love Hypothesis makes me feel and… nope. I could count on 1 hand the things I know about the fmc 21% in, and 1 of the things (& the thing mentioned most often) are the sex dreams about her new boss. I skipped ahead and the spice seems good but the consent is a bit dubious during their first time at times. & WHY IS THIS 400+ PAGES?! WHAT ARE THE PAGES FOR?! For my sanity, it’s a DNF.
This book is an absolute 5+⭐️ for me 🥹👏🏼!!! Ana D’Arcy did it once again. The way she writes is so effortless and engaging that it will make you not want to put the book down. 📖
Andy and Lex’s story was so FRUSTRATINGLY good. I just wanted more and more of them and ahhh OLIVER 🙂↕️!!! I did not want to like his character but he’s so easy to like. And all the bros being so welcoming to Andy? It absolutely warmed my heart 🥹.
If you’re into STEM romances, enemies-to-lovers, coding, boss and employee reads then you will LOVE and DEVOUR this read.
Also, a major shout-out to how Ana D’Arcy beautifully integrated ASL (American Sign Language) into the whole story. It added such depth to the characters and I was intrigued the whole time.
And that cliffhanger?! I was screaming 😫! I need book 2 NOW!
This Story really doesn’t need to be a three part series. The nicknames are trash (but honestly there is hardly a book with good nicknames) and it was very strange that she referred to here v*lv* as intimacy.
Very bingeable and nerdy but I HATED that ending it just was unnecessary. There’s also too much smut for my liking and I didn’t really like how Andrea changed her personality talking with Kate? Their conversations sounded fake compared to the rest of Andrea’s interaction idk
4.5⭐ 4.5 🌶️ Tropes/Themes: snarky banter, hate to love, workplace romance, secret relationship, opposites attract, hard of hearing/deaf rep, forced proximity, just one night, forbidden romance, fuck it, he falls first, boss/employee, grumpy sunshine, stem romance Dual POV 1st Person
Man, where do I start? Even at just three chapters all I could say is wow, I can tell I'm clearly going to love this book and what a satisfying read EVEN with the cliffhanger! Whyyyyyyy did I wait so long to read this, especially since I have my own sexy computer nerd at home?!
Top notch snark 😏, sizzling chemistry ⚗️, and oh so steamy 🥵 🔥just like Up The Ladder. I tend to rate spice lower, but this was a SOLID 4.5 🌶️🫦 .
Lex is just the most delicious jackass on the entire West Coast. He's a nerdy, grumpy, computer genius asshole who melts for Ana and I love him. Andy is a smart, nerdy, badass Latina who I found to be super relatable.
Something I loved: the way Lex kept talking about her pretty [X]. Like, "her pretty head" or "her pretty skirt". Idk what it is about the use of the word "pretty" there but it stuck out to me and I really enjoyed it.
Something I disliked: I try not to get too hung up on words for body parts during sexy times, but I really don't like the use of "my intimacy" when talking about her lady parts
As for the story itself, well, it was amazing 🤷♀️. I loved the dynamic between Andy and her co-workers, and how they are working on an app for people who are deaf/hard of hearing. Some of it was predictable, but I think that's to be expected. Honestly I was so caught up in the story, I read this in about 2 days. And even though it's almost 550 pages I never felt like it was dragging.
HOWEVER.... even though I knew that this was going to be a cliffhanger I still wanted to throw my Kindle across the room when I finished this book 😩 I almost wish I would've waited until after the second book releases to read this so I didn't have to wait.
I really thought I was going to love this book at first. The humor? On point. The setting? Loved it. The chemistry between Andy and Alex? So good—until it wasn’t.
The first half had me hooked. I loved Andy as a character; she’s feisty, smart, and just unapologetically herself in a male-dominated field. The tension between her and Alex was solid in the beginning, and I was ready to be invested. But then… things started feeling repetitive. The dynamic shifted into something more toxic, and I wasn’t sure how I felt about it.
Then there’s the length. I don’t mind a long book if it needs to be long, but this? It dragged. By the second half, it felt like the same scenes on repeat, and by the time I reached the end, I was just… underwhelmed. After all that, the story still wasn’t really over? Yeah, not for me.
That being said, I do think the writing itself was good, and I get why people love this book. It just didn’t completely work for me, and I wanted more from the characters, especially Alex.
As a first read of 2025 I was disappointed. I wanted a cute nerdy romance with some spice but it was 90% spice and the plot felt like an afterthought. Absolutely hated the ending as well, it made me dislike both characters. Even with the cliffhanger I won't be reading the second one.
‘He went from Kal-El to Clark Kent real fast, and I can’t decide which version I prefer. The sporty, confident hunk or the nerdy, brainy one?’
It’s not very often that after I read a book, I need to sit back and collect my thoughts before writing a review. However, The Desire Variable is one such book. Ana D’Arcy put me through the wringer, emotionally and physically(I’m hoping I have abs now; that’s how much I laughed reading this book), and I was there for it. Reading about Andrea ‘Andy’ and Alexander ‘Lex’ and the supporting cast was akin to walking into an old bar where everyone welcomes you back and you feel at home. Ana also did a fantastic job interweaving differently-abled people into the story and focusing on being inclusive to the deaf community, with deaf characters signing consistently through the story and with the app Andy designed to make life more accessible for people like her brother.
“And now you tell me I make you jealous for the first time in your life, that you can’t get enough of me, and you ask of me things that are meaningful and important. How am I supposed to not get attached when you’re like this?”
Ana wrote an FMC that was brilliant with her coding, making a name for herself in her chosen field, supporting her friends and family, and representing STEM women and women of Latine descent. I loved Andy’s character, and she was written multi-dimensionally. Each decision, each reaction, and each conversation she had was real and tangible to me. Ana skillfully curated supporting characters that built our main characters up and added so much depth to the story I wasn’t ready for it to end. And that’s not even touching the romance of the story. Lex, in all his grumpy, ‘leave me alone,’ ‘just let me work’ glory had me right in my feels. Despite appearing to be a jerk with no redeeming qualities, Lex was…everything. He is far from perfect, but his numerous faults give him space to grow and mature in the story.
“I’m not used to the things you trigger in me. I’ve never been the jealous type, but when I see you with Oliver and how easy things are between the two of you, it makes me irrationally mad.”
Lex was the kind of MMC that grew on me slowly, seeping through the cracks and turning into a character who would forever have a spot on my book boyfriend bookshelf. His uncharacteristic, feral possessiveness and absolute control he had when around Andy was attractive, and I couldn’t get enough. It was easy to tell that he genuinely cares for Andy despite his misgivings about himself and his relationships. I loved watching how Andy’s love started to mold him into a more authentic version of himself. The explosive, secretive romance between Lex and Andy was explosive and hot, the holding back and bickering leading up to spicy, open-door romance scenes that perfectly outweighed the tension when they were in the same room and at the ends of their respective ropes. This book was well written and planned, and while I’m not usually a fan of a cliffhanger, the cliffhanger at the end of the book was perfectly placed. Thank you, Ana, for possibly my favorite book this year.
I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
tysm to LoveNotes PR and Ana D'Arcy for giving me the chance to review this ARC
4⭐
okay so THIS (*motions to the entire book*), is not what i was expecting, AT ALL like everything about this book was a welcome surprise
loved reading about the chemistry and the omg 🥵🥵passion between hulkette and kal-el🥹💗ugh your honor, they're too cute but also the smut was intense, like alot (don't judge a book by its cover ig🫡🫠)
BUT
like any other review it wouldn't be honest if i didn't describe why i docked that one star and definitely cause of the cliffhanger ending (i actually hate those so much im willing to not read a series until 2-3 years later when all the books are out)
but also despite loving andrea as a FMC she's just too messy like she would NOT give oli a proper answer and just strung him along which resulted in the shit storm that was the last few chapters; is just not right of her because she played a major part in it too😩😔
all in all, i liked the first three quarters of this but then the last bit - sheesh😔
In an alternate, evil universe, this is the version of the Love Hypothesis. Anyone who wants to read what this booked promised to deliver should just go straight to Ali Hazelwood. This book SUCKED. The academics didn’t feel very intelligent at all (outside of the scenes where they were like “omg look at me code I’m so good”). I like smut, but the pacing on this was stupid and the chemistry seemed so forced. You would have to pay me like $500 (I’m really poor rn) to read the next one. This took me like a month to finish because it was so so so so bad. Gonna go read some Ali to heal my brain now and forget that this ever happened.
I really honestly enjoyed this book a lot, it was super spicy and loved the ASL inclusion.
But I cannot get over the non ironic inclusion of - the FMC wearing a bazinga sweatshirt - her using the term ‘bomb p*ssy’ - her repeatedly using the term ‘Slex’ aka sex with lex (the mmc)
I love nerdy stuff as much as anyone else but pls, pls no 😭
I also feel SO bad for Oli, man was that book rough to him
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
What is it about big, mysterious, NERDY MEN that drives me insane?? I liked Lex so much (and 80% of that was just for his brain), and Andrea was so fucking lovely I just need more of her. now.
The book could have done with a little less spice, for my taste, but it was very sweet regardless.
workplace romance? oh I love it!! if you are a nerd , you are going to love this one a lot! as a nerd we are in our own cocoon of what ifs? but what if the other person likes you? what if they are a nerd as well? the competition 😂 I loved the grumpiness and the spice 🫣 Although the book was a bit slow but the ending was something that made my jaw drop 😳 never expected it!
