Assignment: Eternity is a novel written by prolific Star Trek author Greg Cox, who has contributed extensively to the franchise. He has written stories set in The Original Series, Voyager, The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, and the era of the Eugenics Wars featuring Khan Noonien Singh. This novel is particularly notable because it is Cox’s first story fully set during the timeline of The Original Series, and you can already see how he begins planting the seeds for future books involving Gary Seven, Roberta Lincoln, and of course Isis, the large sentient feline who serves as Seven’s companion.
The novel opens in 2293, where Romulan Commander Dellas of the Tal Shiar witnesses the failed assassination attempt on the Federation President during the Khitomer Conference—and then successfully assassinates Captain Spock herself. This shocking divergence in the timeline triggers the main plot.
We then jump back to 1969, just after Gary Seven, Isis, and Roberta Lincoln have ensured the success of the Apollo 11 mission. A sudden disruption in the timeline alerts them to a serious problem, and they transport themselves to 2269, landing aboard the USS Enterprise at the apparent branching point.
In Stardate 6021.4, the Enterprise is en route to assist a colonized world threatened by an environmental disaster, when the crew intercepts Gary Seven’s transporter signal. Seven insists that Captain Kirk help him with a critical mission inside Romulan space, though he refuses to reveal the details. When Kirk declines, Seven destabilizes the ship’s warp engines and creates a wormhole, pulling the Enterprise deep into the Empire. Soon they are pursued by Commander Motak aboard the Gladiator.
The Enterprise hides within the energy field of a seemingly uninhabited star system—one that contains a cloaked planet. Fearing a hidden Romulan base and an enormous technological leap, Kirk beams down with Sulu and Chekov. Seven breaks out of the brig and joins them, revealing that another Supervisor, 146 (Septos), has been captured by the Romulans. Their plan: use advanced technology to alter the timeline.
On the planet, the landing party encounters Osiris, Septos’s massive sentient feline partner. Together, and with a diversion by Sulu and Chekov, they infiltrate the captured base. Meanwhile in orbit, Roberta Lincoln briefly seizes control of the Enterprise using her advanced tech until Spock conducts a mind-meld, learning of his own future assassination. The ship flees the Gladiator, disables it creatively using Roberta’s device, and returns to rescue the team.
Tragically, Dellas arrives just in time to kill both Septos and Osiris. She stuns Kirk and Seven, then uses the transporter to travel forward to 2293 to finish what she began: the assassination of Spock. Seven initiates the base’s autodestruct and follows her, while Kirk stays behind to delay Romulan reinforcements. The Enterprise retrieves everyone seconds before the explosion thanks to Isis’s reconfigured transporter.
In the aftermath, Spock performs a mind-meld with Dellas and her technologist to erase all knowledge of the captured advanced technology. Seven once again manipulates the ship’s warp engines, sending the Enterprise several days into the past—just enough time for them to complete their original mission on Duwamish. With the timeline restored, Seven, Roberta, and Isis return to 20th-century Earth.
Overall Impression
Assignment: Eternity is a fast-paced, time-travel-heavy adventure that blends classic TOS energy with Greg Cox’s signature ability to connect eras, characters, and future storylines. Fans of “Assignment: Earth” and the Gary Seven mythology will especially enjoy how Cox expands the characters while setting up arcs he later develops in other novels.
