Nicholas Lamert Luard was a writer and politician.
He was educated at Winchester College and Magdalene College, Cambridge, where he read English and was taught by F.R. Leavis. He met Peter Cook through Footlights. A very short academic career was replaced by club management on the strength of a legacy. He co-founded The Establishment in the early 1960s with Peter Cook.
He then went into writing. He was one of the Lords Gnome of Private Eye.
With Chris Brasher, Nigel Hawkins and Denis Mollison, he founded the John Muir Trust in 1983. Nick served as Chairman from 1991 to 1997.
Luard stood as a candidate for the Referendum Party in the 1997 general election, against Michael Portillo in Enfield Southgate.
Luard married Elisabeth Longmore, the food writer, in 1962.
Carswell, an agent relegated to a backwater station, finds himself in the center of an operation. He follows the rules that he has lived with since World War II, and the hunter becomes the hunted.
Minette, unwilling, is brought into the chase, and becomes a key to the information that Carswell needs.
The two must navigate their way through not only difficult terrain but also emotions. They must rely upon each other to survive.
The beginning is a bit slow and convoluted, and really it's not clear where the author would like to end up. But cleared this hurdle, that is precisely the moment in which appears that great character that is Carswell, things start to get really interesting, and more and more interesting as Carswell the man takes over Carswell the spy. All other characters, including Minette, which also is the centerpiece of the transformation of this old dutiful soldier, are just points on the map that will take him to get rid of the past, his superiors then, that after having driven him in an untenable situation try even to kill him, are shadows, so much so that the author does not take the trouble to make them behave in a consistent manner, yet it even doesn't bothers. Great book, a bit dated, but really nice. I thank Endeavor Press and Netgalley for giving me a free copy in exchange for an honest review.
