3.5 Breathless Stars

 photo 7120f077-cf75-4eb2-a439-5e816109a661_zps42c9c272.jpg

Ree Coleman grew up privileged, with a father who adores her, a little brother she loves, and a distant mother. Two years ago, her life changed. She was abducted. Tortured. Raped. She escaped. She survived. Sometimes, it feels like thats all she is doing. Surviving. She doesn’t really live anymore. She has her dad, her brother, her best friend Remy, but her life is just hollow.

 photo 67ea27d0-59be-43be-8aa4-47498b5719af_zpsc1e17cf5.jpg

She is trying though. Day by day, she lives, tries to breathe, survives. As if her life hasn’t been bad enough, she loses one of the only people in her life who truly get her, love her, tries to understand her. Her father. Her life is turned upside down once again. Going from a life of privilege, to living in a not so ideal neighborhood working two jobs to support her little brother an comatose mother, Ree is struggling.

There is only one positive thing in her life right now. Her neighbor, Logan. Logan is a special guy. He sees something in Ree. He wants to help her, to have her open up to him. He has his issues too, but he is living, breathing and wants her to be able to do the same.
‘When you’re broken, you can see when another person is broken too.’
 photo da043442-a53c-4007-b29b-1ca646961309_zps3b079ae6.jpg
‘You’re not the only one with scars.’

The more time Ree spends with Logan, the more her walls start to come down... little by little. They develop a friendship. Logan causes her to break her rules, and for once, she is okay with that.
Logan Marquez makes me break the most important rules in my life. And I need to confess that I like it.

Logan teaches Ree that it’s okay to be a little broken, that her scars are beautiful because she survived. They made her who she is today.
‘I love each one of your scars. And do you know why? Because they’re a part of you, Ree.’

 photo 4d8705cd-9369-41b0-b78b-bc54f6e487fb_zps52cd7f21.jpg

Eventually, their friendship starts to develop into something more, something deeper. I can’t tell you how much I loved Logan. He was the sweetest guy. He had his own problems, but all he wanted was to be there for Ree, to get her to open up. Ree was such a broken soul, but Logan was able to get her to open up in ways she hadn’t done in years. I loved watching their relationship blossom.
‘I want to fulfill you. I want you inside and out. I want to breathe you. I want to live you. I want to hear your smile, knowing that I made you laugh. I want to be your friend. I want to be the boy you fall in love with. I want to be worth your time and trust. I want everything with you. And most of all- I want to be worth your love.’

 photo 423fbb6b-b6c0-4eaf-b49e-c4a3af1595bd_zps4f1e4561.jpg

‘Thank you for helping me breathe again.’

I don’t want to go too much into the story, but there is A LOT going on... Ree and Logan are connected in ways they never thought possible. There is mystery, suspense, and drama along with this broken love story. The closer they get to each other, the more they find out. Will Logan be the one to save Ree, piece her back together? Or will the secrets she finds connecting them tear her down even further?

This one kept me on the edge of my seat. It was an emotional and beautiful read. I really liked both of the main characters, along with Ree's little brother Sam. The storyline was fast paced and there was never a dull moment.

So, why wasn’t it five stars for me- The dialogue wasn’t always fluid, seemed unnatural at times. Also, the lack of contractions were distracting. A few grammatical errors, and sometimes I felt like there was a little too much going on and that took away from some of the more powerful Ree and Logan moments.

Overall, I did enjoy reading it!

"Hope is a drop of gold, it’s the sun in the darkness, it’s the fresh rain in a drought, it’s the stars on a cloudless summer night, and it’s a whispered promise for something better."

What a truly emotional heartbreaking story!

Not to worry, its not all doom and Gloom.

There is light at the end of the tunnel..

There is Hope...

Firstly I'd like to say well done to this author for writing this story, albeit a bit long however you get sucked into this read.

"In your life, you sometimes reach a point where everything is just too much. Too much pain, too much bad luck, too much injustice. There is no light, no hope in the darkness. And death seems to be the only way out of the darkness."

Ree is a girl that has gone through the most heartbreaking and emotional hurt.

"Scars are the threads that hold me together. I am scar tissue."

She was kidnapped, hurt and raped repeatedly.

"I never knew how sensitive a human soul could be. It was like a piece of glass. Put a little too much pressure on the glass and it breaks into a thousand little pieces. Sometimes you can put it back together, but it will never be the same again. It will be full of flaws and scars."

Now two years later Ree is still living with the demon who possesses her thoughts, the man who has stolen her identity, her life.. and part of her soul.

"there’s no escape from the noise in your head. You can’t run away from yourself."

Trying to move on is not an easy task and just when Ree thinks her life could not get any worse her father kills himself or so she's told, and that they are in major debt and have lost everything.

Finally Ree has reached rock bottom.

"Because I’m disappointed in life. Everything that I believe in is gone … shattered. I don’t know if there is fate or a God. I don’t know if there’s a happy life. I don’t know if there are people who don’t want me hurt. My trust in everything is gone.”

Working and getting two jobs, life has never been harder...

Until she meets Logan. He treats her Normal- like she is not BROKEN

He is her light in the darkness, he is her savior.

"Yes, you are right, I am broken,” I admit. “And I’m waiting for my savior to help put my pieces together.”

What happens when everything you thought about your life is a lie?

Nothing is what it seems and the truth will set Ree free, not before it hurts her first.

"Life is like the wind, Ree. It can be stormy, rough, cold, and full of rage, but also soft, caring, and warm. As long as you do not hold it, it can be everything. But if you take your life in your hands, you can control it.”

Wow, this book has A LOT of shockers!!
Shit literally happened that I did not expect!

Love can heal you....

"I want you to be happy. I want to hear your heart beating with life. For me.” His lips trail down my neck. “I want to introduce myself to every freckle on your body. I want to fulfill you. I want you inside and out. I want to breathe you. I want to live you. I want to hear your smile, knowing that I made you laugh. I want to be your friend. I want to be the boy you fall in love with. I want to be worth your time and trust. I want everything with you. And most of all—” His lips are close to mine, his breath tickling my skin. His eyes are a storm and sunshine at the same time. “I want to be worth your love.”"

Anyway, this is quite a different story and no doubt worth the 4 stars I've given it...

"Men break hearts. A real man puts the pieces together and would hold your heart like a diamond in his hand.”

3.5 Heartbreaking Stars

...broken, hurt, angry, and sad.

description

We have said it time and time again. Life is unfair cruel and unforgiving. It takes your hopes and crashes them. It beats you down and steals your heartbeat. This is what people make of it.

description

Life is what we make of it. People haunt us only if we let them and no matter the abuse we got to stand back again on our two feet and embrace our future. Life doesn't punish. It rewards the brave, but only if you let it.

description

Ree Coleman once had it all... Family, money, friends and a bright future ahead of her. A crime beyond the cruelest imagining will turn her into a shell of a person, bitter and alone. Scarred and haunted, she is one step away from ending her suffering.

description

A string of tragedies will reveal well hidden secrets and skeletons in the closet. Ree will have to lose it all to learn the truth and win back her life and maybe a chance to heal and earn the love of a lifetime.

"I kiss him. I kiss him like it is my last breath. I kiss him like I have lost and found him. I kiss him desperately, believing that this kiss is our redemption."

description

Oh my God... I feel like this book broke me a little!
Tragedy upon tragedy, sadness, secrets and revelation,s all were thrown upon us and it left me breathless in the end. Poor Ree didn't get a break with the exception of the wonderful Logan Marquez, the boyfriend that is every girl's dream! Seriously I don't know how this girl managed to keep living and breathing after everything that she went through...

A tribute to people that have suffered and manager to overcome the abuse and emerge winners, this novel by Rose J. Bell shows great promise for the future. It broke my heart and it stills in my mind...

3.5 painful, heart breaking and breathless star's

Broken, Hurt, Angry, Sad,

Ree has a warm home, food on her table, good friends, a boyfriend, lots of money, a loving father who loves her very much, and she him, a little brother and a distant mum. Then one day she gets abducted and spends the next 3 months being brutally attacked and raped, now two years later she's lifeless, dead inside, she's alive but not living and she's definitely not breathing. She no longer has her friends or boyfriend, she's alone.

Ree is living by the scars in her soul and the scars that are on her skin.

Ree is also letting her nightmares control her...

"You're mine now. I own you. I control you. Your life is in my hands, and I will mold it how I want it."

 photo scars_zpsa817a8a9.jpg

Enter Logan
 photo loganpic_zps4b9708ca.jpg
Logan is a bad boy and Ree doesn't want anything to do with him, they literally bump into each other and there first introduction was not an enjoyable one for Ree, but as time goes by the more they bump into each other the more they become friends and the more Ree needs Logan to be in her life. Logan is a loner and although is a bad boy he is also sad and has a lot on his plate they both need each other and lean on each other.

"These scars show that you are a survivor, that you are strong. And if people say anything about your scars, don't listen to them. They don't understand; they didn't go through hell. So, please"-do not be ashamed of your scars. You are beautiful and strong, with scars or without."

I loved Logan is was what kept me reading this book, he shined through, through the dark and there is a lot of dark but there are moments with light.

Ree
 photo reepic_zps062a180e.jpg

What can I say Ree is broken she's suffering and although she is having counselling sessions she isn't letting them help. She has to go through a lot to get to the other side, but there is Hope and Logan is that hope.

This story pulled me in I struggled to put it down and what any reader has to understand this story is coming from a 18 year old, so although I did get cross and annoyed which I will explain this author is going places because she enabled me to hurt right along with Ree.

Why 3.5 stars you ask? I found it to be unrealistic, there is a lot going on its continuous and if I was Ree I don't know if I would of got out of bed there were lots of deep breaths coming from me, I was egging Ree to stay strong, come on girl you can do this...
 photo pleasestaystronggif_zps2f897834.gif

My reasons for why it was unrealistic for me:

In the end Love heals, she pulls through and she and Logan fight for there HEA..
 photo fighter_zps66dac2ac.jpg

"Tu eres maravillose, mi Corazon, You're Beautiful, my heart."

This was an enjoyable read I just didn't love it...

3.5 beautifully tortured stars

This was the moment when I wished to die. Since that day, I had stopped breathing

Wow, what an intro right?

[Summary]

Two years ago Ree was kidnapped and tortured for many months. She is severely traumatized and she hasn’t fully recovered nor does she have any desire to face her problems. After Ree’s father unexpected death, her family must relocate to a more affordable place, where she meets Logan, who can’t help but try to heal damaged Ree.

You’re broken, hurt, angry, and sad. Because of that, you don’t see any worth in life

Okay, I got to do it, let’s get the disclaimer out of the way. Breathless deals with severe subject matter… so go into with caution.

[Review]

The beginning hits you with a bam and you are punched in the face. I honestly was shocked, surprised, but it was a good opening, you are hooked and you just wanted to know what happened… even though you are scared shitless.

Scars are the threads that hold me together. I am scar tissue

Since I don’t know who I really am, I often try to be someone else. I was Goth, a nerd, a cheerleader, and now I am a slut. I hope someday I will find the true Ree again.

Breathless does have flashbacks and we all I know I hate that, BUT I liked the flashbacks in Breathless because it helped paint the picture of what happened to Ree while she was kidnapped and oh boy, there’s no sugar coating those parts.

Poor Ree, I just wanted to reach through my tablet and give the girl a hug. I mean, shit just keeps on coming! You really don’t know what was going to happen and when you think things are going to be okay because she meets Logan and their relationship does have tension at first, but you just think… okay, they are going to be okay. Ree is going to be okay, Logan is there, then you are like BAM, punched in the face again!

At times I felt like Ree did over-react to certain situations and you just wanted her to take a chill pill, but I get it, she was tortured, so give the girl a break right? With all that is said and done, if you want a crazy, pull-your-hair-out-read, then this one is for you.

I hear your cry for help, hoodie girl. I want to make you whole again. You have something in you that draws me to you. But now, I realize it’s you. It’s the way you are

I shiver. Strange sensations stir inside me. Hate. Annoyance. Fear. And… attraction.

Men break hearts. A real man puts the pieces together and would hold your heart like a diamond in his hand.

"I am now a living dead girl."

Two years ago nineteen year old Ree Coleman was abducted by a mad man and repeatedly beaten and raped. She endured this terror for three months before she finally escaped his clutches, but she is no longer the same. After her escape, her friends abandoned her, her boyfriend broke up with her, and her family began to treat her differently. She refers to her abductor as Psycho, and they were frequent flashbacks where Ree recounted the horrors she suffered at his hands. Ree simply goes through the motions day by day but she is not truly living life.
"My worst enemy is myself."

description
Even though two years have passed since her suffering, Ree feels lonely and is afraid of relationships, especially relationships with men. She refuses to date or even talk to guys. They do not interest her, and she is afraid that any guy she opens up to will hurt her like Psycho. Ree has developed a set of rules she lives by in order to keep her safe from men.
"Rule number one: Never talk to a man, unless he approaches you.
Rule number two: Keep your distance from men.
Rule number three: Never ever trust a man."

When her dad dies Ree's entire world comes tumbling down as she knows it. She's left with her mother who is cold and distant, and has to take care of her little brother after her mother shuts herself away from them. Ree's father who was thought of as a wealthy hotelier, has left behind a mountain of debts which he has kept secret from his family. Their lavish, extravagant life on the upper east side has to end because they can no longer afford it. Ree moves to the Bronx where she learns how the other side lives, and is disgusted and depressed by her family's new living conditions. Reeling from the stress of her new life, and the death of her father, Ree feels sad, hurt, lonely, desolate and even contemplates suicide.

description
"How quickly my life has changed. I thought that life would be better for me after Psycho, but I was wrong. How could I believe that I deserved a better life? I'm destined to suffer."

From this point on the book gets moving. Ree uncovers numerous revelations and lies her father told in regards to his business and secret dealings. There is so much happening in this book that it would probably take me all day to recount it all, but there are many twists and turns and lots of heartbreak in store for Ree. At one point I wondered how much more can this girl possibly take? She's only nineteen but by the end of the book Ree has suffered enough pain to last her entire life.
"I'm not afraid of death. I'm afraid of life."

description
Along the way Ree meets a boy named Logan Marquez. I liked Logan right away. He was very charming and kind to Ree.
"Men break hearts. A real man puts the pieces together and would hold your heart like a diamond in his hand."

description
When Logan and Ree first bump into each other its a case of dislike at first sight after Logan accidentally spills his coffee on Ree's hoodie. They call each other names, and exchange not so nice words. They run into each other a few more times, and Logan tries his best to break down Ree's walls. There is no instalove or instalust, but instead the author allows Logan and Ree to develop a friendship, being the other's rock to lean on before starting a romantic relationship. Ree helps Logan through a few personal issues in his life, and in turn Logan wants to help her let go of her past and learn to trust again. Ree finds it hard to open up to Logan, not only because of her past, but because of her physical scars from Psycho's violence.

description
"These scars show that you are a survivor, that you are strong. And if people say anything about your scars, don't listen to them. They don't understand; they didn't go through hell."

Ree doesn't believe she is beautiful, or worthy of Logan's affection, or anyone's love especially after she discovers the truth about her birth. Logan's life is tied to Ree's in a devastating way, and when the truth is revealed it has the potential to shatter their tenuous relationship. Ree's quest to uncover the truth about her father's death and her search to reveal the secrets of the past puts her in danger, and once again brings her face to face her with her biggest fear: Psycho

description
Some aspects of the book were a little overdramatic and not so believable but I did enjoy this. I relished the element of suspense as each piece to the puzzle of Ree's life and the truth was uncovered. I found myself trying to figure out what would happen next, and the characters were likable. Ree did come across as melodramatic once in a while, but I was able to overlook this based on the fact that this girl had her entire life uprooted and has been beaten down constantly by life. Also, there were a few editing and grammatical issues.
"In your life, you sometimes reach a point where everything is just too much. Too much pain, too much bad luck, too much injustice. There is no light, no hope in the darkness."

If you enjoy thrilling, dramatic new adult fiction books this is for you. Overall, I enjoyed this and would read this author's work again.
"I have found love in the darkest moment of my life, when I didn't expect it, and I know that true love is when two people find each other when they aren't even looking for it."

**** 2-2.5 stars ****

So, this book was a little disappointing for me. I know there are many people that really liked it and I understand why. I liked it but not enough to rate it 3 stars. I will get into why, but first let me mention the good things about this book.

The story revolves around Ree Coleman, a young woman who at 17 years of age, was abducted and held for 3 months with a sadistic madman. She was violated horribly and suffered tremendously. Although she managed to escape, her life would forever be changed.

Ree is now 19 and still suffering mentally from her experiences at the hands of her abductor whom she refers to as psycho. He blackens her life in many ways and she feels lost and out of control though tries to show otherwise to those around her.

Living robotically, she meets Logan Marquez and slowly they become friends. She doesn't trust men and follows certain rules that prevent her from getting close to one. However, throughout this early but unexplainable connection to Logan, Ree's father dies suddenly and leaves the family broke and in peril. Ree, her brother Sam and her mother are uprooted from the upper east side to a shady neighborhood in the Bronx.

She is delegated the bread winner and must work two jobs to keep her family afloat. Throughout this her relationship with Logan changes and blossoms and she finds herself breaking rules for him and allowing him into her life and heart.

But things only go from bad to worse for Ree and she suffers through much more horrible events and circumstances before things start to brighten up. There is a lot that happens to Ree and her family. But at the same time Logan faces much change as well as Ree's BF Remy.

One of the good things about this book is the fast paced plot. There is basically no filler and there is always something going on. I was never bored but I did figure out the connections early on.

I guess the things that bothered me outweighed that fact and I never ended up getting past them.

I found the plot extremely far-fetched and over-sensationalized. Things were just too coincidental and somehow perfectly lined up into each other. I know this is fiction but it should also be somewhat plausible.

I also found the writing too simplistic. Things and actions were overly described as well, almost like descriptive video and sometimes that becomes tedious when reading.

My other issue revolves around inconsistency. Things that were unusual were sometimes not explained or not not noted by a character. For example, Ree would at first, see Logan around everywhere she went and never questioned why he was where he was. I thought she'd be suspicious especially considering her past but she never thought anything.

Events happened that almost came out of nowhere. People would show up or appear and Ree would never question it nor would it be explained later therefore bringing pieces of a puzzle together.

So unfortunately I couldn't love this book but want to mention that despite these misgivings, the story was still interesting and fast-paced. It was suspenseful enough to keep the reader engaged and anticipatory.
And although I had some issues with this book I also aknowledge that it is someone's work. The author put hard work into it and put it out there for everybody to read. That's brave and admirable therefore although I had my own opinions I respect the author and her efforts.

Regardless, there are many that loved this so as always, don't be deterred by a less then stellar review. It's best to read something for yourself and form your own opinions, That's the beauty of reading.

"Life is like the wind, Ree. It can be stormy, rough, cold, and full of rage, but also soft, caring, and warm. As long as you do not hold it, it can be everything. But if you take your life in your hands, you can control it."

Two years ago Ree was kidnapped. She spend only 3 months with her kidnapper, but her whole life changed. Now she struggles with awful memories and terrible dreams every day, that reminds her of Psycho.

After very sudden death of her father, Ree's life changes even more. She is forced to move and work in two jobs just to take care of herself and her family. Though her fathers death makes Ree question everything. While seeking answers Ree gets herself more unanswered questions and more trouble...

"It hurts me in my heart. I cry and cry, but the pain doesn't go away. I don't cry, but the pain is still in my heart. I yell and I hit, but the pain still doesn't disappear."

description

I was really excited to start reading this book, because the blurb sounded amazing! Dark and emotional - just my cup of tea. However the book did not meet my expectations. Yes, there were some dark and disturbing moments, but my expectations for the book were different.

Anyway, the reason I did not enjoy this book as much as I would like to is that I could not connect to the heroine, Ree. I get that she has suffered, and I get that it is hard for her to move on, but she was repeating every day how ugly she is, and how she is the the "living dead girl" and it was just depressing, not inspiring. Also I felt like in the book there was a lot of telling, but not showing. I liked that story was fast paced and something was always happening, but at the times it just seemed a bit too much . And well, its safe to say that Ree has the worst luck of all, she got !!!!!There were a lot of times that I had to push myself to pick up the book and read further, which is not a good thing.

"Everything seems like a bad nightmare from which I want to wake up. But I know it's the reality."

description

Despite the fact that I couldn't connect to Ree, I really liked Logan. He seemed like a great guy, because while he was struggling with his own problems he also helped Ree deal with hers. He was really insightful, and I was highlighting a lot. Though, nobody should call 21-year-old guy/man - 'rude boy', that pet name made me cringe every time I read it.

"Men break hearts. A real man puts the pieces together and would hold your heart like a diamond in his hand."

description

Also, another thing that I liked about the book and what kept me reading was the "big secret", I liked that I had to put the little clues together and figure out what the secret is. All the unexpected twists and revelations were the main reason why I kept reading. And I am happy to say that I figure the secret out before author revealed it, though I didn't predict a lot of things between.

Lastly, I was a bit disappointed in the story, but I hope that others will find the book more enjoyable than I did.

Thanks to author for providing me with the ARC.

Ree, oh my poor shattered, torn to bits, broken beyond repair, can't catch a break Ree. I wanted to jump in this story and hold you, love you, comfort you. You broke my heart multiple times. You never caught a break. I mean u have a right to want to bitch slap fate. The bitch has it coming. Just when I thought you were headed toward your happy ever after BAM shit goes down and I screaming, yelling throwing my iPad across the room.

Logan, I heart you big time. The things you said, the comfort you give, the way you are is just swoonworthy. I'm in awe of you. You could have chosen the path of destruction but you didn't you decided to rise above and be man. You are amazing.

Don’t let your past define your future.

Wow. Just…wow. I cannot believe that this author is only eighteen years old. First off, I have to say a big THANK YOU to Ms. Bell for offering me a copy of her book to read and review. I was hesitant at first, but in the end, I’m so thrilled I gave it chance. This story is far from typical. It will tear you up, beat you senseless, spit you out and leave you for dead. But no matter how dire things got, you couldn’t help but continue on; you had to find out where it’ll all end. Is there a happy ending? Can there be happy ending? After all the horrid events in her life, can Ree escape the never-ending nightmare?

Scars are the threads that hold me together. I am scar tissue.

Ree has been through hell. At seventeen years old, she was kidnapped, tortured and raped. She escaped her nightmare, only to be thrust into a whole new other one. Two years later, she is still hallow inside; she is and never will be the same person she was pre-abduction. Those three months she spent with the man she calls Psycho have reshaped her life, and not in a positive way.

Her trust in men: destroyed.
Her ability to trust: practically nil.
Her relationship with her father & family: strained.
Her life as a whole: empty.

Ree is not an easy character to like, but you can’t help but feel empathetic towards her. I do not pity her, not even a little. I admire her courage and her strength. I’m going to warn you, your emotions will be put through the wringer. And just when you think there might be a spark of happiness coming her way, she gets thrown underneath a bus some more. However heartbroken I was, I kept going because underneath all the shit she goes through, a spark of hope was there. And his name is Logan.

“Men breaks hearts. A real man puts the pieces together and would hold your heart like a diamond in his hand.”

Logan is elite and has earned himself a spot on my ultimate book boyfriend shelf. He is a real man. Only a man like Logan would have the patience to take on someone as damaged as Ree. But then again, his life isn’t all peaches and cream either. He’s lived a tough life, but no matter the curveballs mother nature has dealt him, he still has the ability to see the beauty in being alive. This is what he presents to Ree and this is what eventually breaks through to her.

“I know that you have been disappointed, but shit and bad things happen, Ree. That’s undeniable. But you don’t live for the bad moments. You shouldn’t let them keep you down. You live and breathe for moments that are beautiful and make you happy. You should live for those moments, Ree.”

I really enjoyed this book. It was such an emotional and tough read, but it was so worth my time. The story is not straightforward and is not an easy read. It’s one beat down after another. So many twists, turns and new developments always on the horizon. I never knew which way was up. My head and heart were always in a state of panic, but in the overall scheme of things, I wouldn’t change a single thing about this story. If you decide to try this out, just remember to bring your patience. It’ll be worth the ride.

This was one of the most amazing books I have ever read. For such a young author she has knocked this out of the ball park. The characters of Ree and Logan were developed so well, I couldn't turn the pages fast enough. I found myself holding my breath as I read because of the intensity to the story. There were twists and turns and kept the story going and the heart break was heavy as I watched Ree trying to overcome her past and find the pieces to her future.

Logan was a man who had his own skeletons and baggage but he was the one who taught Ree how to trust and love again. He took the pieces of her fragmented life and helped her put it back together. This was a story of human strength and courage. Rose let us readers see the evil and ugly that this world has to offer, but she also gave us a clear example of what determination and love can overcome.

I continued to be amazed as the next piece of Ree's life was exposed and she was confronted with another lie that she had been told growing up. Her hero was exposed as a monster who destroyed lives, her family who was suppose to love her didn't and put her in danger, strangers who didn't know her constructed a new family for her and offered help. Friends who had been there for life became family in more ways than one. Relationships were formed not knowing that their paths had crossed years ago and not always in best ways. Can Ree and Logan survive this once all the secrets were out?

I highly recommend this book. The author amazed me, I was in awe of her ability at such a young age. I promise if she keeps writing she will be a best seller before long.

Very impressed, actually extremely impressed by this author...Rose J. Bell. The whole time I read this book, I kept saying to myself WOW, this author is only 18 years old!

Without giving anything away, the description gives you what you need to know what this book is about. I will tell you this book was action packed. It is dark, sad, and heartbreaking. But, you will also read about survival, forgiveness, happiness, and true love. What this main character goes through is unimaginable, especially at such a young age. You will root for her and hope at the end she can conquer all and be happy.

I promise you will not be disappointed reading this book...I think anyone who reads this book will be extremely impressed with Rose and her writing. I can see her just getting better and better with each book she writes.

Thanks for giving me the opportunity
to read the ARC.

Thank you to Rose Bell for the ARC and opportunity to review her new book. I felt there was a beautiful story in this book ...I'd have given this story 5 stars ..only there were a few distracting things that took away from story. I will let each reader make their own decisions. I believe in a few years this author will blow us away because I truly do see a great talent that needs cultivating.

3 stars!

Pros

Strong characters
Engaging drama

Cons

A little over the top with how many obstacles that were involved. Took away from the love connection.
Grammatical errors were distracting.

Still a very entertaining read.

At A Glance
I enjoyed Breathless a lot in the beginning, but as it went on, I found a lot of stuff unrealistic and melodramatic.

The Good
I was drawn in right away by Breathless. Ree's story is simply heartbreaking. This girl cannot catch a break. She was kidnapped and tortured for months. Now trying to get over her horrible experience, her father unexpectedly dies and she, her mother, and her little brother are forced to live in a crappy apartment with Ree as the sole financial supporter. And things get even worse for her from there. Yup, you heard right, things actually get WORSE for her.

No one can read this book and not want to cry for Ree. She had a great life until the day Psycho kidnapped her. From then on, nothing goes right. She goes through what all of us fear. She has almost no support system. I just couldn't imagine how this girl got up every day and actually lived her life. But she did, and I truly admired her for her strength. But Logan was the one who really kept Ree together. I think, for Ree, Logan was the thing missing in her life without her even knowing it.

Logan is a loner. He has his own demons and a past he rather forget. He's a great guy though. He's tough but also gentle. He has a heart made out of gold. Logan befriends Ree even with all her baggage and attitude. He sees a girl who needs a friend. But I don't think he ever expected Ree to help him right back. They were there for each other when no one else was.

I really liked the array of side characters. Some where horribly fantastic and others were so sweet and understanding. I also liked the suspense and slow building of mystery. Some stuff I figured out and some stuff left me shocked. I'm happy I read this one.

The Bad
The dialogue wasn't always fluid and it seemed unnatural at times. The grammatical errors where abundant enough to really annoy me.

What bothered me the most was how melodramatic this story was. All the horrible stuff that keeps happening to Ree was TOO MUCH. I felt like I was watching a soap opera. The drama was never-ending. And a lot of what happened was unrealistic. The ending most of all. This is a spoiler: Everyone grilled into Ree that calling the cops and getting certain bad guys arrested wouldn't make a difference, and how it would actually make things worse because others would come and kill her for "snitching." But that's pretty much how everything was resolved in the end. It made no sense.

The Snuggly
Logan and Ree were a cute couple. I liked how both of them had problems to overcome and attitudes to get checked. They were not perfect, and they let each other be who they were.

Be prepared for rape and abuse scenes. Recommended for a new adult audience and up.

Final Thoughts
Breathless was far from perfect. I wish it stayed the consistent awesomeness of the beginning, but I do think it's worth the read. Logan and Ree's friendship alone makes this book worth a gander. Recommended.

Quotes
"When you’re broken, you can see when another person is broken too."

"I love each one of your scars. And do you know why? Because they’re a part of you, Ree."

"I want to fulfill you. I want you inside and out. I want to breathe you. I want to live you. I want to hear your smile, knowing that I made you laugh. I want to be your friend. I want to be the boy you fall in love with. I want to be worth your time and trust. I want everything with you. And most of all- I want to be worth your love."

"How quickly my life has changed. I thought that life would be better for me after Psycho, but I was wrong. How could I believe that I deserved a better life? I'm destined to suffer."

"Men break hearts. A real man puts the pieces together and would hold your heart like a diamond in his hand."

I received an e-copy of this book from the author in exchange for a honest review.

I was approached by the lovely Rose J. Bell about reading and reviewing her new book, Breathless, via e-mail and at first I was a worried I wasn't going to have the time to give it the time it deserved because I had recently gotten a TON of books for review from NetGalley. But I decided to take a chance and give it a gander anyway. I was intrigued by the emotional subject matter that seemed to encompass the story of Ree and her traumatic life. I was curious to see how she dealt with such hard situations.

Ree's world was destroyed when she was abducted one day when she just happened to receive a flat tire. She was held, tortured, and raped repeatedly by her kidnapper for three months when she was seventeen-years-old. She escaped somehow and attempted to continue on with her life despite the numerous scars all over her body and in her heart from her experience.

The only person she even remotely trusted is her father who took her abduction and torment the hardest, second to Ree herself. When her father commits suicide Ree struggles to understand why he left her when she needed him the most. Her father's secrets start to unravel Ree's world and she finds herself stuck in a dilapidated apartment in the Bronx with an emotionally shattered mother and a confused and lonely nine-year-old younger brother. It is only after meeting Logan that Ree starts to wonder if she is able to recover from her past and her changing present. Logan has secrets of his own, but can Ree see past them in an attempt to finally trust the male sex once more?

I found that the book had a firm grip on me emotionally. When I watched Ree breakdown and fight for her sanity, or even her very life, I was swallowing tears. I could understand how the things she experienced during her abduction would make her fearful and cautious about people, and men most of all. I felt like I was Ree and I was LIVING her life. That was a particularly enjoyable situation when it came to her interactions with Logan, of course :)

This book has a LOT of instances of suicide, attempted suicide, or suicidal thoughts throughout it's pages. When I was 50% of the way through the book, six different people have encountered suicidal situations. It seemed a little excessive. I know that suicide happens a lot in this world, but that often?

Another drawback was the fact that every character was connected in some way. It would be a bit more understandable if the story took place in a small town, but this is taking place in New York. That is a rather LARGE area for every character to have some connection to the other in some random and odd way.

I liked Breathless alright. There were parts I enjoyed and others that I struggled with. The only thing I can recommend to those that choose to read it, be prepared to have you heart shattered left and right by the twists and turns of Ree's life.

Breathless is a heart-stopping tale of recovery and strength. It toes the line of tough topics and shows that the beauty of life is worth living for and all you need to do is breathe.

Two years ago, my old life ended. The old Ree was dead, gone forever. I buried her with my wishes, hopes, and dreams. I left her behind a wall of pain and torture.
I'm now a living dead girl.

Wow!! This was such a heavy read. There is no easing into this story. From the very first page you are right there in the intensity of it all.

When Ree Coleman was seventeen years old, her life as she knew it was ripped apart and she had to call on every bit of strength that she had to get through everything that she was subjected to. Now two years later Ree is barely making through each day when her world is ripped apart again with the death of her father. If that wasn't enough to deal with, Ree, her mother and her younger brother are informed that the beautiful house and all their money is gone so they are forced to move to the Bronx. A chance encounter with a determined Logan will bring something to her life that she never expected to ever experience.

I never knew how sensitive a human soul could be. It was like a piece of glass. Put a little too much pressure on the glass and it breaks into a thousand little pieces. Sometimes you can put it back together, but it will never be the same again. It will be full of flaws and scars.

Ree has so much strength. She doesn't see it or believe in it but I kept thinking how does this girl keep getting back up. She was knocked down so many times. Blow after blow was levelled at her. When you think that she couldn't possibly be subjected to anything else, then bam!! Another blow was thrown her way.

The kiss... this kiss feels so good. Addictive. It feels right and wanted. It feels like swimming in molasses, tasting sugar and chocolate, being wrapped with silk, being dipped in gold.

Logan's love and concern was clear right from the start. The chemistry between the two of them was so strong. Ree was so reluctant to trust her feelings. And after everything she had been through it was completely understandable, but Logan was not easily pushed aside.

The bad guy of this story was creepy, disturbing and cringe worthy to the very maximum. He had my skin crawling. He was sick and twisted and seemed to take such delight in the horrible things that he did. I don't think I've ever encountered a character who had quite his brand of evil before.

One of the things which stood out to me and I would have liked to have seen play out a bit differently was that these characters were all very intricately entwined. Everybody Ree knows or meets seems to have some connection to everyone in her life. There were times when I questioned the believability of it. But other than that Breathless was a solid, enjoyable debut.

3.75/5 Stars.

"You can be broken inside, but you can still be a strong person. Appearance doesn't have anything to do with the soul. You should know that, Ree."

Coming into reading this I knew that there was going to be some heavy themes. The only thing is, is while I understood the female protagonist's plight and struggles, I had a hard time connecting with her on a deeper level.

Ree feels "broken" due to a horrific three month kidnapping experience that's shattered her faith in people (particularly men). She lives her life day to day still feeling the after effects of the trauma she had endured and is unwilling to let anyone in.

One day, her dad goes on a business trip and is later found dead. Police rule that it was a suicide while Ree knows that it was an act of foul play.

With her dad dead, Ree and her family lose everything and have to move from their rich Upper East Side of New York to the slums of the Bronx.

Only, with Ree's kidnapper still at large, a mysterious love interest named Logan now in the mix, and explosive secrets turning up, what will become of Ree?

.....

MY REVIEW:

The precipice of "Breathless" is good but the story line kind of lagged for me and the pace was too slow for my taste. I'm the type of reader that needs constant action or revelations to keep me interested and "Breathless" isn't that type of read. It's more so an emotional journey for Ree and therefore it took time to manifold.

Also, so like I said in the beginning, connecting to Ree was probably the hardest part for me. While I get why she is the way she is I still couldn't stand her self-pity and redundant statements claiming that she was "broken." Seriously, if I were in your shoes and went through the same ordeals I would definitely feel the same way but I wouldn't keep telling myself and others constantly that I'm "broken" constantly. It's very annoying and made me want to throw something at her. After all, some unfortunate people also go through the same ordeal only to not escape or survive. Be happy you're alive and well.

As for the admission on identity of the kidnapper, or "Psycho," as Ree liked to call him was just shocking. I was so not expecting that. Is it so terrible that I mostly paid attention to the back flashes of Ree's kidnapping with Psycho the most appealing parts of the book? Gosh, I feel so wrong and demented for admitting that! lol.

That said, I'm sure that you other readers will find this book pulling at your heartstrings but for me it just wasn't for me.

Thanks so much to Rose J. Bell for allowing me to read the ARC of "Breathless"! It was not a bad read but I guess I needed something more to hold my attention.

ARC given to me by author for an honest review.

Due to heavy subject matter, graphic scenes and sexual content this book is intended for mature readers.

Boy or boy this warning ain't kidding. Mature readers for sure. Heavy subject matter, completely, heavy and dark. Not in a bad way though. This book is so deep and dark and heavy, WOW! I had no clue how dark it was when I started reading it, but I was hooked from page one. This is serious content, but what an amazing, heartfelt, tragic, happy story.

Two years ago Ree Colemans life changed, and I'm not going to tell you what happened to her, you need to read the book. But its heavy. This girl is so damn tough, she inspires me to be just as strong. What happened to Ree would kill many many people. I loved reading about how she found strength, or whatever she calls it, to live, and move on. Her dad and little brother Sam I think had a lot to do with that. Every chapter in this book was so moving to me, I cried every chapter. The depth this book has is amazing. Real life issues and real life solutions.

As soon as we meet Logan, I love him instantly. There are very few guys in the world like Logan. I hope to one day meet my Logan. Like Ree, he is also damaged and broken. With that, that's where Ree learns to trust again. It isn't an easy road, but the journey they take together is so real, and believable.

There really aren't adequate words to describe how much I loved this story. I could read it over and over again, and still feel all the emotional moments the same as the first time. Ree's story is tragic and heart breaking but inspiring. This story is so real that I felt like I was Ree. Everything that happened to her, I was there with her in the book. Not that this has happened to be in life, but you get so sucked in, its all you can feel. I was always thinking about this book when I wasn't reading about it. I LOVED THIS BOOK!! This book is by far my most favorite book I have read!!!

Wow... Breathless was a very emotional novel with very damaged characters. For such a young author, Rose did an amazing job building her characters and the angst in the story. I loved Ree & Logan. I wanted life to be better for them but every time I expected something to FINALLY go their way, another lie would be exposed or some other horrible memory would come up.

Ree was so much stronger than she felt. She lived through, what felt like to me, the worst experience ever possible. Reliving her memories HURT to read. I would nearly crumble in on myself when she would flash back to her time when she was held captive, raped and beaten.

Watching Logan try to help pick her back up and teach her how to live again was beautiful. I enjoyed watching Ree come out of her shell because of Logan.

The mystery keeps you on your toes. I kept thinking I might know what was going on but as soon as I was hit with the truth, I felt...well, I don't really know. I don't want to give out to much information but the story unfolding took me by surprise.

Overall, Breathless had a great plot but nearly painful to read because of how you're affected while seeing things & experiencing things through Ree's eyes.

I hurt, teared up, cringed, gasped, and nearly broke down FOR her while reading through this one. Breathless - perfect title.

Although I enjoyed the story in this odd, self-torture sort of way, I wasn't bouncing up and down. I feel like there are others out there that will love this story more than I did. The writing, at times, need a little polishing and fine tuning. A few moments were a tad awkward.

ARC provided by Rose J. Bell for honest review.

I rated this a 3.5 Star Review,

This is a story about a young girl, Ree, who has been through so much in the past 2-1/2 years. She shows her strength as she struggles through her circumstances, and as she meets Logan and breaks down all her rules and falls in love. There are a lot of tender moments between "hoodie girl" and "rude boy" that you will love. I do have to warn you there are some explicit scenes as she remembers her 3 months in captivity with "psycho" - so if you have issues with that, please be aware.

I rounded down on the 3.5 Star Review mainly because of the grammatical errors, which I could understand because the author is from Germany. I also felt like there was almost an unbelievable amount of drama happening to Ree, which didn't give time to develop more of the other charachters in the book. Even with these issues for me, I'm glad to have had the opportunity to read this book and I think this author will just improve as she writes more.

Breathless was a good read. There was a lot going on and the romance was steamy. This book had a lot of mystery/suspense and dealt with some dark materials. At the beginning of the story, we meet a very broken Ree Coleman. She had been kidnapped and abused, managed to escape her captor, and is on the edge of sanity two years later. Just when she seems to be making progress, shit hit the fan, and in a very big way. Ree finds herself and her family in a slummy apartment, with two jobs, and caring for her family. And somehow that still isn't rock bottom. Though a new neighbor, Logan is helping her pull it together, slowly gaining her trust. But his past is just as dark, and his secrets could break them for good.

Bell's writing was good, I found myself easily lost in the words and in Ree's life. It was definitely an emotional read, yet was perfectly balanced with humor. I found the plot at times had too much going on, it seemed that the story started going soap opera-ish toward the end. Overall, it was a good, short, emotionally charged, dark read.

I'm not often left speechless. This book literally left me with my jaw hanging and speechless on more than a few occasions.

Let me start off by saying if you can't handle really hard topics, this book isn't for you, It is riddled with them (abductions, rape, murder, suicide, etc). However, if you can then you won't be disappointed. There was suspense, romance, revenge, and more plot twists than a maze. I found myself needing to keep reading to find out if this poor, broken girl could really survive so much heartbreak and ugliness. And I needed to know if Logan, this magical boy who showed up and could see right into Ree's soul, would heal her or break her like everyone else in her life.

Breathless was hard to read at times, but was well worth it. To witness such courage and determination in a person who has had very little good in life was truly inspiring.
