About the author

Alan Spade

47 books61 followers
Alan Spade worked for eight years for the press, reviewing video games. In his youth, he acquainted himself with the classic French authors, while immersing himself in the works of H. P. Lovecraft, Isaac Asimov, J. R. R. Tolkien and Stephen King.

That wide range of influences is reflected in his style, simultaneously approachable, visually evocative and imaginative.

Alan likes to say that "a good book is like a good old pair of shoes: you feel at ease inside, comfortable."

The Breath of Aoles is his third book: previously, he wrote a fantasy novel for two years, between 2001 and 2003, but after submitting it to publishers, he decided the story wasn't good enough. He didn't try to publish it anymore. Then he wrote a Science Fiction short stories collection, and then, for six years, The Breath of Aoles.

This is a great volume to keep alongside the Ardalia Trilogy, especially if you're a fan of Epic fantasy, as it gives the history of the races involved. It tells the history of how the major cities came about and how the wars first began which all gives an insight into the way the peoples evolved into the beings that we come to know in the trilogy.

Also included in this volume is an excerpt from the first book, Ardalia: The Breath of Aoles

I was given an e-copy of this book by the author in exchange for an honest review

reading this short history at the end of the trilogy was not very helpful to me, would have rather read this at the start maybe then the amazing scope of ardalia would have made more sense to me!!

While it isn't necessary to the enjoyment of the "Ardalia" series, "A brief history of Ardalia" gives some insight into what brings Pelmen and company to the events in the trilogy.

Whether you choose to read "A brief history of Ardalia" before you read the trilogy, part way through (as I have done), or at the end, I'm sure everyone will gain a better understanding of the world of Ardalia.

Written as a guide for (and by!) the author himself, and never intended for publication, this gives a tantalising glimpse of the author's talent.

I would probably be happy reading Mr. Spade's grocery list - he's that good!

A very interesting background to the Ardalia series. It helps put into perspective many of the happenings in the books. It also helps to answer some of the questions that the reader many have about the peoples of Ardalia and their history. Although set in a less flowery style of writing it is reminiscent of the prelude that David Eddings wrote in each of the Belgeriad books that provided a background to present happenings.

A worthwhile read.
