Love, Love, Love, LOOOOOOOOOVE(*sing song voice*) this book!


It is totally different kind of book from the first book in the series, Second Chances, and it keeps you on your toes!!


First of all, Grant. Wow. I wasn't sure I liked him in Second Chances, but here in Second Nature we really got to see him. And boy did we see him!!! Come to momma!


Moving on...


Thalia is a badass woman. She is strong and has endured things that would break a lesser woman. But she feels like something is missing. In fact, there is a part of herself that she doesn't even remember. Is she strong enough to remember...?


This book is racy and sexy and so full of suspense that you actually get your heart pumping reading the pages!


Twists, turns, terror, rage, strength, lust...love?

Yes, this is exactly what I was doing while reading this!

Ok, for those who haven't read it yet, you will be totally lost about this: Winston. I loved Winston!!!! I love this little guy. The scene in the jack shack, (yes, I did write that and it is what you think), I swear I about peed my pants!!


God, I just love this series!! I can't wait until the next book!!! Can I pre-order it before it's finished!!!

Surviving Redemption

Wow, what a breathtaking adventure. Some of the stories I've written were for fun, some were written just for the experience but Surviving Redemption is a story that truly demanded to be written.

Grant haunted me. After writing his debut in Second Chances I couldn't get him out of my mind. I know, some think it's crazy to talk to people in your head. LOL. Maybe it is. I'm okay with that label if it means I get to tell these amazing characters' story.

While I enjoy the steamy parts and the HEA, I will let you know that it is much more than a love story to me. While researching for this book, I found a new passion. The incredible strength of human trafficking survivors astounds me. After reading through book after book, page after page of some of the most heartbreaking, tragic real-life experiences I was literally changed forever.

There is true evil in the world; opportunist who prey on the weak to provide for the desires of the wicked. It was difficult, at times, to portray such an evil in words and still reveal Grant and Thalia's love in a way they deserve. I hope you find their story as engaging and addictive as I have.

Holy crap, what the hell did I just read? Honestly, this book was like a freakin' movie playing out in my head and it was just amazing. I don't know what I was expecting but honest to god, I got so much more than I bargained for but in such a good way. This is NOT your conventional love story, not by a long shot. Yup there was that element but I got drama, a whole lot of action, mystery and bucket loads of suspense (which nearly killed me). For the most part of the book, my insides were doing somersaults and my heart beat so fast it felt like any second, it'd explode out of my chest. This book was edge of your seat reading so buckle up ladies and prepare for one hell of a ride!!!

D.L Roan covered some pretty ugly topics in "Second Nature."They were harrowing and gruesome but unfortunately the reality for some. Sex trafficking is an ongoing problem all over the world and although people assume it only occurs is poorer countries, they couldn't be further from the truth. Thalia Brezlin was a regular American teenager with a bright future ahead of her... until she was kidnapped. Well that was the prologue, fast forward several years to chapter one and the young girl I had initially met was gone and in her place was a "La Femme Nakita" incarnate!!!! Jesus this girl was kick ass, hardcore, feisty and on the surface she feared nothing. She knew how to handle herself and she definitely knew her way around a gun!!!! What the hell had happened to her in those missing years? Straight from the off, I was desperate to know more. This was a woman on a mission for revenge and nothing and no one was going to get in her way!!!! Well, maybe one Grant Kendal given half the chance:

She was the most stubborn, suspicious, obstinate, guarded, powerfully compelling, beautifully resilient piece of work he'd ever seen.

Having been severely beaten and stabbed, Thalia managed to escape and ended up washed ashore barely alive. And who happened to be the sole inhabitant of this island? OK so there were two inhabitants... Winston the hilarious monkey and Grant Kendal, one very hot, bad ass alpha assassin!!! The more I got to know Grant, the more I went weak at the knees because as hard as he was on the outside, there was a softer,caring, protective side to him; a side even he had never seen surface. He was a trained killer... emotions never came into the equation!!! Thalia had gotten under his skin (yay...everyone deserves to be loved don't ya know!!!):

Gone was the dominant, controlling killer who took command of her mind and body to fulfill a mutual sexual need. In his place was a caring, tender lover who was intent of reaching her heart.

What had started of as sexual need, turned to lust, turned to so much more and neither of these characters really knew what to do with these feelings... they were alien... neither having felt anything of the sorts before and I loved it. Their bickering, their snide, sarcastic comments towards one another, the way they drove each other mad with their actions and behaviour just made me want to read even more because I knew that despite all of this, despite the growing attraction, despite that connection, Thalia was still on a mission and that mission consumed her. Love and affection wasa luxury she couldn't afford to have and for Grant... love and affection was a luxury he didn't deserve.

Although there was an element of romance in this book, there was so much more. Right from the word go, there was drama and action and from the first page, I already had questions that needed answering. But the more answers I got, the more questions I had. This book was one tangled web of deceit, lies and of betrayal with so many curve balls thrown in, even the characters were left dumb founded. How the author managed to get so much in without leaving me confused I don't know, but she did it and did it so very well.

As connections between characters were revealed and sub plots came to light, I ended up in a reading frenzy... even the husband had to make his own tea. I couldn't leave this book without getting to the end.... I needed all the pieces of the puzzle, but as each one was revealed, I felt my heart bottom out because none of it was pretty. There were scenes of violence, blood spilled, death and torture, none of which were pleasant to read but were part of the harsh realities of that world. Right up until the last chapter, my stomach was in knots. I had no clue which way this book would go and it drove me nuts!!!! I wanted my HEA god damn it.

D.L did an amazing job with the writing. This is only the second book written in third person that has held me captive from the first to the last page. I lived every every emotion the characters felt and visualized the whole story in my head. Pure brilliance. My only little niggle was towards the end when we got to see characters from the first book in the series. I know this is the second book and can be read as a standalone which is how I read it. I just wanted a little more information about Gabby and her three husbands? What was the deal with that? Each to their own and all but I felt like I missed something somewhere... maybe I did in my reading frenzy and it was right under my nose all along. Who knows? it didn't interfere with the main story though. I guess for those who did read book one, it was probably nice catching up with the characters.

I would definitely recommend "Second Nature" and rated it 4.5 Hearts

OMG...Second Nature is a must read! Author DL Roan does a phenomenal job at drawing you into the story of Human trafficking and survival! It was one emotional ride I didn't want to end! Grant just wanted to be alone, away from his past and death. Then Thalia washes up on his island and the journey begins! Thalia is strong, feisty and a survivor. She is use to taking care of herself and has a hard time handing over control to the sexy, dominant Grant. The chemistry between these to is off the charts. Their journey is full of sexy love scenes, danger, betrayal and secrets! Will Grant and Thalia survive this last mission? You need to read it and find out!

I loved everything about this book! Grant and Thalia, the supporting characters and most of all Winston! Winston is the adorable monkey that Grant befriended on the island and he is a little protective over Thalia also! I am excited for you all to read Second Nature and can't wait to see what DL Roan has in store for us next!

I'm still in book recovery mode after reading Second Nature by DL Roan. Gosh where to start??? DL does an amazing job of drawing me into Grant and Thalia's world. Their world is full of dangerous action, soul crushing betrayal and steamy romance. Second Nature is well written with intriguing characters. DL kept me turning the pages with her story telling and left me hanging onto her every word.

Grant has relocated to a deserted Island to try to find peace. He is a hired killer and has had to make some tough decisions that has left him empty inside. His only friend on the Island is a cheeky monkey named Winston until a beautiful unconscious woman washes on shore.

Thalia has been through Hell and back. Issa was the only father figure she remembers having in her life and now he is dead. Thalia has one thing on her mind and that is to avenge Issa's death. Problem is her world is full of lies. Who can she trust?? Flight or fight seems to be the only options she has until she finds her savior...Grant.

I applaud DL Roan for her bravery for tackling the dark side of Human Trafficking. Human Trafficking is a horrible problem happening right here in the US. Thank you DL for bringing awareness to this modern day form of slavery.

I think I’m still in recovery mode after reading Second Nature by D.L Roan.

The book is completely different from her first book in the series, Second Chance, and that draws you in further because you can’t predict which way she’s going to go with the storyline.

The book is angst filled and I think I spent the majority of the book with my fingers crossed and mutter prayers while I was reading. It affects you on different levels because you know that human trafficking is a very real problem and affects a lot of people all over the world.

I lived this story through D.L Roan’s writing. I felt the emotions. I was on the roller-coaster with them all. IT takes a certain type of writing style to drag you in so deep you don’t know where reality ends and fiction begins. I’ve read lots of books where I was doing just that, reading the words and they’ve been very monotone. Second Nature is far from monotone. It compels you to keep reading it, to keep living it, to keep emerged in it.

The characters that have been created are perfect! Thalia is a kick ass, take no crap, will beat you in your sleep for fun lead heroine.
After everything she has been through her spirit is far from broken. She’s picked herself up and is focused on her sole goal, even if that means she’s headed to her death. As far as she’s concerned it’s worth it. Grant, well we saw a bit of Grant in Second Chance and I didn’t know what to make of him. I fell in love with him in this book and if there is a real life Grant out there somewhere then ��yoouu hoo I’m over here!’ Winston OH MY DAYS was he funny. I loved the scene when Thalia followed Winston into the woods and watched him imitate Grant. I was on the floor laughing.

I do have to warn you. Do not read this book while you are waiting for public transport, the chances are you’ll be that engrossed in the book your bus will just drive right on by!

This author had me hooked from her first book Second Chances. This one did not disappoint! Grant is dark, grouchy and believes he doesn't deserve anything good in his life. Natalia is broken, lost and pissed off. When fate throws these two together it sparks attitude and an attraction that can't be contained! Running from the worst creatures that comb the earth Natalia finds out the hard way how to trust and Grant has love thrown in his perfectly laid out plans of being alone. DL has once again wooed me!

Wow! Another winner from D.L. Roan! A few days ago, a friend recommended a book entitled The Heart of Falcon Ridge by D.L. Roan. I had no experience with Roan's work but after reading the blurb, free sample and several of the reviews, I decided to give it a whirl...and so glad I did! Roan is an incredibly gifted author who excels at creating fictional contemporary yet believable scenarios within intriguing interconnected worlds and populated with complex, relatable, life-like characters who literally explode from the pages, grab your attention, engage your imagination and completely capture your heart. I fell in love with Roan's natural, easy flowing style and suspense filled storylines, so, naturally, I couldn't stop with one book. I raced back to Amazon and purchased Surviving Redemption, the first release in the Survivors' Justice Series. Now, folks, I thought the first book was great but I loved, loved, loved the second. Surviving Redemption is a steamy, well crafted full-length standalone contemporary romantic thriller filled to the brim with heart-stopping danger, heartwrenching drama, spine-tingling suspense, perplexing mystery, agonizing angst, mind-blowing plot twists, heartwarming romance and dreamy sex. The narrative is well written with a multiple third person perspective, which, when done correctly, gives more insight into each character's thoughts. Constantly changing to different points of view can sometimes be exhausting for the reader, however, Roan did an exceptional job and focused primarily on the two protagonists of the story, former government assassin Grant Kendal and beautiful sex trade victim, Thalia Brezlin. The dialogue is well executed and flows smoothly. I must admit, the storyline is creative and quite unique as well as intense, steamy and romantic but without a doubt, my favorite component is the cast of intriguing characters. They are captivating, engaging, endearing and well developed. I was instantly smitten with Grant Kendal when he was first introduced as a secondary character in The Heart of Falcon Ridge. And Thalia was such a worthy heroine. I knew it would take a special woman to capture Grant's heart and Thalia was even better than I had hoped. I was immediately drawn to her character's courage, bravery, determination, and kickbutt persona. She was phenomenal and absolutely perfect for Grant. They blended brilliantly. The interaction between them was so hot it sizzled! It was electrifying! Did I like this book? No, I loved it! Roan didn't just tug at my heartstrings with this one; she literally ripped my heart right out of my chest and left me gasping for my next breath! My emotions ran the entire gambit from excited to sad to angry to disappointed to hopeful to heartbroken and finally to happy. It made me laugh! It made me cry! It made me shake my fists with indignation and outrage! It made me cringe in disbelief and horror! I was totally enthralled! And loved every single minute! I was glued to my ereader with my heart fluttering wildly in my chest, the hours passing as quickly as the pages! It was magnificent! Would I recommend it? You bet, but only for adults since it does contain some steamy,dreamy sex scenes. Will I read this author again? Absolutely! Decisions, decisions...now I have to decide which of Roan's books I want to read next. lol... And finally, was I entertained? Totally! Fabulous entertainment and an awesome read.

Grant Kendal aka 'The Lieutenant' has never felt love nor does he believe he ever will. Truth be told, he doesn't feel much of anything anymore, except the occasional rush of adrenaline when he successfully completes a mission, but even the high from killing one of the world's evil monsters has grown old and stale. He's seen enough evil and carnage to last a lifetime. It's time for him to retire from the game and drop off the grid. He failed his mentor, Daniel Gregory, in solving the case to find his missing daughter who was abducted and sold into the sex trade at only sixteen and that was over ten years ago. At least he was able to repay his old friend by helping Daniel protect another innocent young woman in Grasslands, Montana and free her from the same fate. It was long past time for him to disappear to the welcome solitude of his deserted tropical island, at least for a while...or heck, maybe even forever. There would never be a happy ending in his future. Grant needed very little to survive which is a good thing since his island had very few amenities to offer other than water and a pouting sullen monkey he'd named Winston as his only companion. Sex had never been something he had to have. He'd had his fair share of sex with many women but he'd never actually made love to a woman and no intentions of ever trying. He'd never even felt any real attraction or emotional attachment until a mysterious pale beauty with dark hair and eyes the color of arctic ice washed up on the shore of his island. Unfortunately, she was dead. Oops...not quite, at least not yet but apparently someone definitely wanted her dead. But why does he even care whether she lives or dies? She means nothing to him? Right? But there's something about her that seems to call to him, but what? We'll see! No spoilers from me but trust me when I say, Grant has finally met his match! Oh my! This one will keep you guessing until the very end!

I was lucky enough to get pulled into the world of the Second Nature Passionistas, and I do believe after finishing Second Nature last night, that I’m just going to have to stay there. I’ve been struggling with the right word to describe this book. I mean it’s sexy, smart, action packed, and provides a moral. Up until meeting DL Roan, I never really heard or gave a thought to Human Trafficking. Now, I am amazed by the facts that I’m seeing out there on this horrendous tragedy of the human circumstance.

In Second Chances, Book 1 in the When Seconds Count series, we are introduced to several of the characters in Second Nature and we learn about the horrible men out there that have stolen lives and the families that are struggling with their losses. Second Nature begins with Grant (from Second Chances) hiding out on his own island with a monkey named Winston. I now understand why so many of the Passionistas were so gaga over Winston. I mean who doesn’t love a funny monkey? He added just that right amount of something extra to the story in my opinion. Thalia begins the story being tortured, escaping, and washing up half dead on Grant’s island… from here we see a complicated progression of a relationship between two scarred individuals, as they fight to come to terms with themselves, each other, and their pasts.

DL Roan does an amazing job of creating some believable characters in a situation that keeps you both on the edge of your seat and jumping up and down with anticipation. The description of some of the scenes made me feel like I was in a suspense movie with my hands over my face as I peak through my fingers. Wanting to see what happens, but being shocked by what was being shown.

A huge thank you to DL Roan for taking me on this roller coaster trip. I can’t wait for your next book and highly recommend this author and series to anyone who likes Suspense with their Romance.

Second Nature took me completely by surprise!!

What I liked: I thought the synopsis sounded very interesting and as it was a free Kindle deal, I thought why not? Then I realized it was part of a series and you know me, I HAVE to start with the first book. I'm anal that way. Little did I realize that the two books would be so very different. Some of the same characters sure, but the whole premise of the stories are light years apart.

The characters in Second Nature are strong, resilient and smart. I was in awe of the portrayal of Thalia. She had been through some pretty terrible things in her life but thankfully she didn't have the memory of all of them. She is determined to obtain her revenge, even if it costs her life and she never veers from that goal no matter what happens around her or to her.

Grant is just completely bad ass. And he appeared in the previous book in this series, Second Chances, which I would have missed if I hadn't gone back and bought it. He's an assassin trying to drop out of all the craziness he was involved in. The first scene with Grant almost had me laughing out loud. Trying to live on a deserted island with only a crazy monkey for company was a brilliant inclusion in character development.

The interaction between Thalia, Grant, and Winston (the monkey) is fabulously written. Well, actually the whole story is a roller coaster ride. This is not your typical romance. Ms Roan's plotting of Second Nature is spot on. There is barely time to take a breath or go to the bathroom. I couldn't put it down.

The storyline is heartbreaking but I've seen more and more books about human trafficking and realize it's more common than everyday people realize. Imagine all the victims being able to get their revenge!! That would be justice!! I felt like I was actually a part of this story with all the emotion it made me feel.

What I didn't like: You read it and tell me what you think. I just loved it!!

I was really looking forward to this one as I enjoyed the first book in the series so much. I was a little disappointed though. I felt the story lacked something and sadly I can't figure out what it was. On the surface it had everything I like in a book, exotic location, hot MC with military training, super hot sex... but for some reason it just didn't come together for me.

HOT HOT HOT! Fantastic book. Lots of love mixed with action! Some very good issues not usually discussed are written about in this book which makes you stop and think about abuse and what we can do to stop it. However this book is plain awesome! Steamy love scenes..who doesn't like that? Great story and would recommend this to everyone (over 18). WOW!

Human trafficking is a fast growing problem I was aware of before even hearing that's what this book was about. Again this story gripped me from beginning to end. Through all the ups & down. The hell Thalia & Grant went through they survived.
They fought & got through it.
The story is deep & meaningful & grips your heart, you feel Thalia's pain. Also her Dads pain after loosing her years ago!

I read this book while in a plane on my way to Europe. I was excited to read it as I heard so much about it.
Ok now let me just say, I really hate flying. Like HATE… but 3 hours into my transatlantic schlepp and I was so engrossed in this book that I wouldn't have dreamed of being anywhere else.

I kept looking around wishing I could talk to someone about what I was going through, what Grant & Thalia were growing through, but the people around me may as well have existed in a another dimension. It was just me and my book, and the snoring man behind me or the incessant whining of my children could not pull me from my reverie.

‘Second chances’ takes us on a journey into the murky world of abduction and human trafficking. From the very first page of this action packed, riveting book I was catapulted into its nucleus.

The story centres on Thalia Brezlin. She is tough, like John Claude Van damme tough, sharp as a tack, beautiful and just… BAD-ASS. She is also strongly driven by vengeance, she is resolute on avenging the death of her uncle, the man who raised her, protected her and taught her kill with precision. She is obsessed with seeking out his murderers and delivering her own brand of justice no matter the cost.

Her plans are thwarted when she finds herself washed up on a remote beach and into the life of one VERY sexy, dangerous wall of a man - Grant Kendal. He is a man with a past, a man who is trying to live a life of solitude, until he finds Thalia. She is barely clinging to life when he finds her on the shore of the secluded island he calls home, and as much as he tries, he cannot shake his curiosity about this beautiful stranger. Against his better judgment feels compelled to help and protect her and what follows is an explosive turn of events that will completely blindside you as secrets are uncovered and truths are revealed.

I LOVED this book so much, I ATE. IT. UP. I read it word for word-no skimming. D.L Roan is a master wordsmith and she had me wrapped around her little finger for the entire journey. Grant Kendal is HOT HOT HOT- Ms Roan can write the hell out of an Alpha and the steam between Thalia & Grant is positively thigh clenching!

The plot is multilayered and completely unpredictable and she flawlessly balances what is a very serious and edgy tale with the right amount of humour; I laughed out loud and fell in love with Wilson ( just wait and see). This is without a doubt HOS mandatory reading! 'Second Nature' is sheer quality and I give it 5 Golden, span dangly stars all day long! I will dutifully read anything this author writes. My entire weekend was consumed by both D.L. Roan’s stories I have to say that I am very surprised that I haven’t heard of this series sooner because they are simply amazing. In my opinion, it isn’t necessary to read both books but would be ideal if you ever given the chance.

Both deal with the serious issue of human trafficking and one thing that I found most admirable about this author was how she was able to present these two stories in such contrasting settings. Book One: Second Chances was set out in the Montana country while Book Two was set all over the world mostly Africa and India. How those two separate world’s were described felt so authentic I looked twice to see if both stories were written by the same person. The characters mostly remained the same and I am in total awe how the author was able to make all of it work.

We first meet our hero Grant Kendal in Second Chances. At first I was confused what his exact job description was but it all came clear in this book. Let’s just say he had some exceptional skills. It was mostly because of guilt and the thought of disappointing his mentor that caused him to retire after his last assignment. He just wanted to lay low on his tiny island with his ornery monkey.

When an injured woman washes up on his island without question he takes it upon himself to care for her. Immediately he knew that she was in some serious trouble and instead of going on with his life and enjoying his early retirement he decides to help and protect her instead. Thalia is this very resourceful and intelligent woman out to seek revenge against someone who ended the only person that she’s ever loved. However there is so much more to her story that she doesn’t even know. All these years she has compartmentalized these issues that would have caused anyone to break. She was lead to believe that her life was always safe and happy but not everything is as it may seem. When she was finally confronted with the truth she recovers rapidly. Her strength and tenacity is just astounding.

Grant took to Thalia immediately. The sexual tension between these Grant and Thalia was well played out. When they finally got to that point I thought their fervor was mind blowing. I loved how well they fit together and I’m not just talking physically. Each of their histories and their backgrounds brought them so close together I thought they complimented each other very well.

There was so many complex elements in this story and yet the delivery was exemplary all throughout. The depth of every feeling and emotion between the characters was noteworthy as well. Bottom line is, I think that this book was outstanding and I would have to say that after reading this story, anything written by D. L. Roan will be on my insta-buy list.

Second Nature by D.L. Roan was a pretty intense read. I have to say it hit a little close to home. Having two young daughters of my own it was an eye opening read for me. The issue of human trafficking is very real issue today. I applaud the author for addressing this in her book so tastefully. Not only did the story draw me in it captured my emotions immediately. Now I didn't read the first book and was a little lost in the beginning with the characters. I did catch on about twenty percent in. That is where the story really got good for me. From that point I didn't put the book down.



In the very beginning we meet Natalie. Her car breaks down a man offers to help her. Before she knows it she is being taken and thrown into a car. Natalie has obviously been kidnapped and is the next victim of a human trafficking ring. Then we meet Thalia who is being tortured and escapes but ends up in the cold ocean. She washes ashore where Grant has been taking solace. He pretty much rescues her and does his best to patch her up. He sees the condition she's in and can't help but wonder what is going on with her. He is intrigued and he can't help but be intrigued by her beautiful grey eyes. She is being hunted down by some really bad people. Grant knows a thing or two about these kind of people. All he wants to do is get Thalia to safety and make sure she gets the medical attention she desperately needs. Being thrown into a unusual and dangerous union they have become attracted to one another. One thing leads to another and they end up seeking comfort in one another. They have no idea the others secrets and betrayals. It also seems that whatever they started will not easily be finished.

This was an intensely well written book. I wanted so much to see this book end happily for Thalia and Grant. I felt that if anyone ever deserved one it certainly was them. I think that is why I was so engrossed in the story. I was rooting for them. My heart was very invested in this book. This was a fast paced story so strong attention is a must. Their is also a bit of a mystery that is uncovered. It will keep you guessing, and also keep you hooked.

This is a must read for anyone that hasn't been introduced to the true nature of the issue of human trafficking. This is unlike any book I have ever read. I will definitely be reading more from this author.

Author D.L Roan has outdone herself again in this book. She brings in romance, action, and also a very special message that many people turn and decide to believe is still happening “Human Trafficking”. In this one you read about Thalia and Grant. I will have to say that even though you first read about Grant in her first book Second Chances, this one can definitely be a stand alone if you decided to read it by itself. They are definitely different and have their own story line, so with this being said the author definitely has the ability to show she is very talented and can change up. I love this about authors, it keeps me wanting to read more and following them. My words to the author after I read this was “OMG when is the next book”. Also, you can not forget our Winston!!! He is this cute and adorable.. Well you will have to read what he is but he brings humor into the book. Love him.

Thalia has been through a lot of unfortunate incidents in her life but due to the human mind has managed to block it out (definitely a known fact that this can happen to us). However, from what she is able to obtain she decides to fight back and decides to seek revenge on those that have done her and the ones she loved wrong. I always love a strong women character because in real life I don’t think all women are helpless and should be able to defend themselves.

Grant has decided to take an early retirement but faith apparently has other plans for him. Go figure right, lol, everytime you plan on doing something it never works the way you want to. He ends up meeting Thalia in a very unique way (you must read this because the author has shown a soft side to Grant compared to what he is known to, and it is said that a women can bring a softer side out lol). However, after she starts to open up he puts two and two together and starts to realize that his so called happiness may be in the terrible danger as soon as they find out and clarify on what Thalia has blocked out.

When I say that the author has managed to bring you into her spiderweb of words, I mean it. I was entrapped in this book and wanted nothing to do but keep reading it. She has done her research on current affairs in this book so she is knowledgeable on the unfortunate parts of human trafficking which others should be made aware of. I loved this book and highly recommend this book to you as a reader!

Stop what you’re doing, because D.L. Roan is going to ruin you for any other action erotic suspense thriller. Second Nature is action packed from start to finish. From the opening scene in a dank, dark ship hold to the conclusion in a ramshackle hut the excitement, suspense and tension run full tilt.

Hell hath no fury than Thalia Brezlin. She is on a mission of revenge and nothing is stopping her from her objective. Grant Kendall, is a like a Ken doll/Jason Bourne hybrid come to life. The former operative has hung up his HK and is looking forward to rest and relaxation, that is until a beaten, stabbed, and barely breathing Thalia washes up on his beach. Thalia is no damsel in distress heroine and Grant is no one note caveman hero. And once they get on the same page all bets are off because it’s a wild ride across Africa and Asia.

Human trafficking is the backdrop of Second Nature and its seedy underbelly makes for an intense and grotesque tale of abuse and brutality. Yet, the story never delves into an unseemly, gratuitous violence. It is a heady, serious subject that I am glad to see come to light and I appreciate that it doesn’t shy away from the bloodshed and ferocity.

The pace only slows so that Thalia and Grant can connect, but the steamy, sensual scenes soon have your ticker going full speed again. I loved that both characters were on the same playing field one and one was not weaker than the other. I also found the story of two loners coming together towards a common goal convincing and compelling.

The mystery climax is a tad coincidental and incredible, but if this is how Roan writes her thrillers I’ll take it because the writing is on point. I did get a sense of what was going to happen but I was so amped up on the story I couldn’t but it down due to the barrage of adrenaline, anxiety and awe.

My only regret is that I didn’t find this author and series earlier. I have not yet read Second Chances, (an error I will soon rectify), but it did not diminish or lessen my enjoyment of Second Nature. So if you love adrenaline fueled, gritty and fast paced thrillers, run don’t walk to grab your copy!

Author D.L. Roan embarks us on a journey of the reality of human trafficking and through her characters she is able to share the story of Thalia, a captured human slave, fighting the unimaginable in a dark place were many victims of the slave trade die by their captors.

The prologue begins with a young girl being kidnap and then fast forwards to find Thalia Brezlin struggling for freedom from her captor. Thalia was able to escape by jumping in the sea, but not without a few stab wounds and beatings. She has floated ashore on an island where she meets ex-assassin, Grant Kendal.

Grant was living on a deserted island with Winston, a monkey, after a much need break from his dangerous profession as an assassin. I really don’t know what to say about this book except I love, love, loved it from beginning to end. I just couldn’t put it down. I fell in love with Grant and Thalia, they were literally meant for each other. Their banter back and forth and the way they challenge each other just awesome.



She was the most stubborn, suspicious, obstinate, guarded, powerfully compelling, beautifully resilient piece of work he’d ever seen.

Thalia has literally been through hell and back she is out for revenge and she will get it at any cost no one and I mean no one will stop. Not even sex on a stick, stubborn Grant.

Never in his life had he been so consumed by a women. The need to feel her, to taste her on his lips and wrap himself in her scent.

Grant has always felt a bit of emptiness, he has retired to an island trying to find peace and solace. One day everything changes when a beautiful women washes ashore on his island.

It had just the right amount of everything, sex, love, hotness, drama, tragedy, hope; the list can go on and on. You will definitely want to make this your next book to read.

Gone was the dominant, controlling killer who took command of her mind and body to fulfill a mutual sexual need. In his place was a caring, tender lover who was intent of reaching her heart.

After reading Second Chances I wasn’t sure where I wanted this one to go.. I mean, I HAD my wants and what ifs, but I had no idea that D.L. Roan was going to go that deep!! WHOA!! I was so engrossed while reading this story that I found myself sitting outside my kids’ preschool in the parking lot reading what I THOUGHT was just going to be a few minutes…. Which ultimately turned into the entire 3 hours they are IN the school and only stopped because I have a “go get the kids alarm” on my phone… lol
Grant and Thalia’s entire world is just so amazing... Dangerous, suspenseful, and such a great story!! D.L. Roan is such a brave and wonderful woman for tackling the wild world of Human Trafficking the way she did… You can tell she really feels strongly about this and did her research!! OH OH OH WINSTON!!! HAHAHA That monkey is hilarious!! Grant moved to a deserted island and Winston was his only friend until the driftwood wasn’t the only thing washed up on the beach one day… All in all, this story is full of a lot of emotions and there IS a lot going on all at once… BUT it is well WELL worth the ride!!

Second Nature, WOW!!!
I so love this book. From the start to the end I was so hooked up with it!
The concept and the story flow of the story are wonderful.
About the story, I so loved it. The concept of the story is unique in a sense that it may not have an icing on top on start but as the story went, it will really hooked you up and you will definitely learn something out with it. The way the author made the story interesting, you can easily feel the emotions rolling off in each scene.

The characters; Grant, even he has this tough-guy persona he is also a kind and caring person.
I love how he reacts with Thalia and the way he protected her to the ones that want her dead is bone-chilling and romantic at the same time. Thalia, a girl who never trust anybody except Issa (a man who protected and cared for her as if she was his daughter). And the last but not the least, my favorite character of all time, WINSTON!! I so love this little guy, he brought smiles in the book with his caveman style attitude towards Thalia. You will definitely love this guy!!
Back to the story, when things get out of hand, Thalia learned to trust and also loved Grant. But with all the unexpected revelation and the following events will the two have the ending they wanted? Hell, I so loved it how Grant and Thaila will deal with this events.
On how the story ended, it’s so good. I’m not disappointed on how it went and for me it’s just right. DL Roan did a wonderful job in making this book a wonderful and fantastic read!!

This was an excellent story of twists, turns, suspense and romance. I read this story without reading any of the reviews first, only the description, and for the first time, I'm so glad I did. I absolutely loved it!! I had no idea what would happen next and it kept me on the edge of my seat the entire time trying to anticipate what was coming. I'm usually not one to enjoy blind reading because I become so attached to the characters and worry about what's about to happen. However with Second Nature, I'm glad I had no idea about the events that would occur so I could guess as I read and discover everything on my own.

I fell in love with Grant from the moment we're introduced to him. On top of being deadly and sexy, the man is protective, smart and has a monkey named Winston that you'll adore. Thalia is an extremely strong and likeable female lead. I genuinely cared for her and wanted her happy as much as I did Grant. The immediate chemistry between she and Grant was undeniable. I knew it was only a matter of time before Grant gave in and give in he does. WOW! Ladies, we all need a Grant of our very own.

There are some dark components to this story. Thalia was kidnapped and forced into the sex trade business, but she doesn't remember so we're not provided much details other than snippets of nightmares. There is one bad scene that might be uncomfortable for some people, but I've read much worse. And it's nothing that should keep you from reading this great book.

I thoroughly enjoyed this story and would recommend for readers over the age of 18.

Second Nature by D.L. Roan was an awesome book. It’s been a long time since I've read such a great erotic suspense. The book had such a developed, well throughout plot, with twists and turns, fully fleshed out characters, an alpha male to die for, and a heroine who was strong, hard and feminine all at the same time. There was action, violence, revenge, darkness and cruelty of human trafficking, wild animals, white sandy beaches, romance and really hot sex. Oh did I forget to mention a very satisfying HEA.

This is the second book I’ve read from D.L. Roan, and both have been 5 star reads for me. I was so engaged and pleased with this story; the plot was strong and carried the book from the first page to the last. The chemistry between Grant and Thalia, was believable, not rushed, and developed like a smoldering fire into an inferno of want, need and desire for two people who had no room in their lives for love. Our H/h were shown as real people, sure they made mistakes, had trust issues, experienced moments of sadness, insecurity and betrayal, but that just made them more lifelike, and allowed the reader to share in their experiences and growth.

There is so much I could say about the book, but I think the reader really needs to experience it for themselves. I really hope the Ms. Roan is already writing the next book, because I’m sure looking forward to reading it. It will be fun to see if I've guessed correctly on who the H/h will be too.

Why in the world did I put off reading these books (both Second Chances & Second Nature) for so long? The story is gripping and in parts painful to read. I was completely unprepared for the terror I felt in the world of human trafficking. In fact, I actually made it a point to look this up and sadly it is a real thing that is still a major problem today! I was shocked.

Grant is a bad ass who, quite frankly, frightened me at first and then awed me. I felt his anger and rage and passion and pain and I couldn't stop thinking about how amazing he truly was. A alpha with a dark side and a huge heart, even if he does try to hide it. Grant is hiding when Thalia makes a rather dramatic appearance on his island. She washes up to shore in bad shape and Grant immediately starts to care for her.

Thalia is brave. So much braver than I would be in that situation. And when she meets Grant you can feel the desire from them both. It takes time and lots of patience, but we see what love is really capable of doing. It can even heal the deepest hurts.

Needless to say I loved these stories! I am not on the DL Roan bandwagon and I am never coming off!

I give this book 4.5 lipsticks! It was that amazing!

Even though this book dealt with the subject human trafficking, I really enjoyed book. Doan does an outstanding job developing the characters of Grant and Thalia. I absolutely loved Grant Kendall! Not only is he one tuff SOB, he is the ultimate alpha male! Thalia wasn’t a little timid fragile woman by any means; she could definitely hold her own. I really felt that the combination of these two characters’ personalities lead to intense chemistry and HOTT sex. Grant’s personality really began to develop as the story progressed and he seemed to become more human than just a trained killer; I felt this was one of the reason’s I began to fall in love with him.
As I mentioned previously, this book does focus around human trafficking but I thought that the author presented this theme in a tasteful way and it truly was eye-opening as well as informational. As the story neared the end, I thought it might be possible for readers to look forward to a spin-off involving two of the FBI operatives (hint, hint D.L. Roan). Anyway, I would definitely recommend this book for anyone looking for a hot read.

Second Nature is a book that delves into some very horrifying and sad themes including human trafficking, torture and corruption with in the government. Thalia, the main character is strong, stubborn and a real fighter, she has been through some of the most terrifying situations but always refuses to let it defeat her. Grant the love interest of the story is a man with a past he is trying to leave behind, but when Thalia comes into his life that becomes extremely hard, as she is apart of the world that he wants to forget. The attraction between the two characters was almost immediate and as the story continues their bond only gets stronger, but the secrets that bring them together could also be what tears them apart. Even though it doesn't take long for the two characters to fall in love, the emotions and memories of both Thalia and Grant are described so well that you see how broken both characters are and how much they needed each other to be able to move forward in their lives. With lots of twist and turns this book kept me reading wanting to know what would happen to both the characters and whether or not they would find what they were looking for. 4/5 <3 s

This fast paced and action packed story had me on the edge of my seat from the very beginning. The characters were real and engaging and the story was told so vividly that I could easily picture the scene at any given moment.

Grant and Thalia are perfect for each other. They are both lethal and have damaged pasts. They both are also passionate, intense, and have a will of pure steel. I really liked Thalia and despite everything that has happened before the story and during the story, she still manages to stay strong and fight. Grant puts his best skills to the test in this story but he also learns how to open up and be human. There were also some seriously steamy scenes in this book that had me fanning myself several times.

D.L. Roan does not disappoint with well written characters that make you love or hate them and an excellent story line that had me riveted from beginning to end. This high stakes, intense, and sometimes emotionally draining is a must read. Excellent story and a 5 out of 5 stars!
